What if you could spark your child’s motivation without nagging or bribing? In this episode of the Happy Families Podcast, Dr Justin and Kylie reveal the four “happy brain” chemicals—dopamine, serotonin, endorphins, and oxytocin—and simple daily habits that naturally boost them. Discover how to create an environment where kids feel driven to learn, calm under pressure, and connected at home. These small shifts can transform study sessions, chores, and family time—no sneaky tricks required. KEY POINTS Dopamine – The Anticipation Engine: Break big tasks into small wins to fuel progress and keep motivation high. Serotonin – The Calm Conductor: Nature time, sunlight, and slow breathing help kids reset and regulate emotions. Endorphins – The Natural Painkiller: Movement, laughter, and a dash of safe risk-taking release powerful mood boosters. Oxytocin – The Connection Catalyst: Hugs, shared meals, and positive friendships build trust and belonging. Practical take-aways: chunk chores, go barefoot on the grass, encourage physical play, and prioritise warm, consistent connection. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE “Creating the right environment isn’t manipulation—it’s giving our kids’ brains the natural fuel they need to thrive.” RESOURCES MENTIONED Brain Chemistry Hacks for Better Learning [Article] #1195 - Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About ASD, ADHD and Executive Function With Andrew Guastella [Podcast] ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS Chunk It Down: Turn daunting tasks into bite-sized steps for instant dopamine rewards. In this episode of Yoga-ish, we share our funniest, weirdest, and most heartfelt memories from our early years of practice: • Renting rooms in funky parts of town with circus performers as neighbors • The original paper-thin blue and green mats that never got cleaned • Heavy wooden props that could double as furniture • Our first teachers — from deeply traditional to delightfully eccentric • How yoga felt before it became mainstream, and what's changed (for better and worse)Whether you started in the 70s, 90s, or just last week, this is a love letter to yoga's evolution — and a celebration of its wonderfully weird past.

In this ENCORE presentation, Dr. Kevin Pogue, PhD, professor and geologist educates us on terroir. This podcast is like taking a terroir class: it debunks so many things that people spout in reference books, at wineries, and in mainstream press about the topic! He explains things brilliantly and he is one of the first people I've ever met who actually has answers to my really dorky questions about terroir.  Photo: Kevin Pogue. From Vinterra.net   Kevin is one of the most famous people in the field of terroir. He's considered the foremost terroir expert on Washington State wine and he's known around the world -  his work has been featured in both national and international journals. He's a licensed geologist and professor of geology at Whitman College in Walla Walla. Kevin has a doctorate in geology from Oregon State University, and decades of college teaching and research experience. He has authored books, articles, and done extensive research on the terroir of the Pacific northwest, with a good portion of this time spent on investigating the deposits of the Missoula floods, which were the pivotal event that formed the geological base of the region.    Kevin's research today focuses on terroir. He owns a consulting company, Vinterra, through which he assists wineries in choosing the best vineyard sites, matching grape to site, and educating winery owners and winemakers and their customers on why their specific terroir leads to the style in their wine.    This is a great show and well worth a listen -- whether it's your first time or it's an encore for you, you will definitely learn something (again!).   Remember that this and ALL back episodes are on Patreon. Become a member today and help the show continue! My mom and dad left a lot unsaid between them, and after his second stroke, the ability to have the conversation that they had put off? It was like visiting a ski slope in the summer. You can see the runs, you can see where the snow would have been, and imagine the speed, the presence, the thrill, breath taking cold. But none of it is that, at that moment. Many close relationships are actually three relationships happening at once. One relationship is the explicit relationship— what you say to each other. The others live inside each of your heads, separately, and it's all the things you haven't said. Explicit is shared, and the implicit are islands, in the middle of the Pacific, surrounded by saltwater, perilous to approach. Only the most intrepid ever approach these islands of the inside and the unsaid. It remains to be seen why what we don't say is so scary. Maybe it's the sharks we imagine in the water? Maybe it's the dying of thirst on the way there? Maybe once you get there, you wouldn't like what you found? Maybe you will kill everyone who lives in that island with the memetic infections, vector-borne diseases of the explicit?A plague, that's what you didn't talk about…maybe. Some of us have a different set of experiences, are novelty seeking, and will take a risk. Some of us have already drowned once, and been revived. There's a secret, it turns out, to finding everything you ever wanted, across expenses, time, Atlantics away. There's a way to traverse the gap between each other. It requires understanding that you don't understand anybody else. It starts by acknowledging that you haven't said the most important things—and neither has he, she, they. The same fear that drives you drives everybody else, to an uncomfortable small talk, instead of impossible silence, with all the weight of all the things that you were afraid to say. I love you, and worse, I loved you. Past-tense, tense. I hated you, once. I did things I regret. I fear things that you have left, in another life, on another continent, frozen deep in the ice of the Antarctic, and boiling away in the water around that volcano. In letting our fears guide our conversations, and their malicious edits, we leave each other bereft—the walking dead. The truth is we're gonna die, together or apart, and living together, with the most important things kept unsaid is as pointless as it is poisonous. All of us have something to own up to. The sooner we do it, the less lonely and dead we are.In Memoriam, Jake Seliger. If you don't read Bess Stillman, now is the time. This is a public episode.
