Why Mouth Breathing Matters More Than You Think

In this episode, we took a deep breath—literally—and talked about something we all tend to overlook: mouth breathing in kids. It's not just a quirky habit or something they'll "outgrow." It's often the very first red flag that the body is struggling, and if we don't catch it early, it can quietly snowball into sleep issues, behavioral problems, and even developmental delays. We started by diving into how disconnected our healthcare system is—dentists look at teeth, pediatricians look at growth, ENTs look at infections—but no one is zooming out to ask: How are they breathing? Is their tongue resting correctly? Are their lips closed at rest? Then we explored three major truths that most providers don't talk about: We don't screen the mouth like it matters—things like tongue posture, tethered oral tissues, and lip strength get missed. The body compensates until it can't—kids may seem “fine,” but mouth breathing, poor sleep, and behavioral struggles are often signs of a deeper dysfunction. No one provider has the full picture—which means we as parents have to become the connectors and advocates. I got personal about my own daughter's journey—how I missed these signs despite working in dentistry—and how that heartbreak turned into purpose. That's why I created the SHIFT Method: a roadmap for parents to spot red flags early, ask better questions, and take action before it becomes a crisis. We wrapped up with a call to action: it's time to stop waiting for diagnoses and start listening to the body's signals. Tantrums, snoring, picky eating—these aren't random quirks. They're clues. And when we shift our perspective, everything else can shift too. Key Takeaways: -Mouth breathing reduces oxygen intake by 18% during sleep—yes, 18%!-It's not normal—just common—and common doesn't mean healthy.-Providers often “stay in their lane,” so parents must become the advocates.-Early signs like bedwetting, snoring, or dark under-eye circles are worth investigating.-One simple shift—like encouraging nose breathing at night—can make a huge difference. Book a consultation today:I am always here to help answer any question and schedule a 15 minute call with me. Nearly every child today is developing with an airway that's too small for their tongue, and most parents have no idea it's happening. In this crucial conversation with Dr. Hilary Fritsch, an airway-focused dentist, we expose why so many American children need braces, struggle with focus, or experience chronic health issues. The truth is, symptoms like mouth breathing, snoring, frequent ear infections, and even ADHD-like behavior aren't random - they're often signs of an underdeveloped airway and jaw.The most frustrating part? This epidemic is entirely preventable with early intervention. Through proper screening and treatment starting at age three, children can develop properly-sized airways and jaws, often avoiding the need for braces altogether. This isn't just about straight teeth - it's about your child's sleep, breathing, and long-term health.Whether your child has chronic cavities despite good oral hygiene, struggles with focus, or shows any signs of breathing issues, this episode could change their future. If you have a child between the ages of 3-12, go to www.toothpillow.com to get your free virtual video assessment started.  Tell them Wendy from Toxin Free(ish) sent you and use code WENDY at checkout to get the upgraded virtual video assessment for FREE,  plus $200 off any treatment. In today's episode, we're chatting about: • Why crooked teeth and the need for braces aren't just genetic • The connection between airway development and common childhood health issues • How to identify signs of airway issues in your child • Why early intervention (starting at age 3) is crucial • The truth about mouth breathing and its impact on your child's healthDownload the Top 25 Toxins to Avoid and become a label reading pro! Children will mirror the energy and attitude of parents. Campbell unpacks the differences between mouth breathing vs nose breathing as well as the impact each has on the mind, body, and nervous system. He also touches on stress (embracing it rather than avoiding it), self regulation (teaching the nervous system how to be calm, the link between breathing and emotions, and the difference between "breathwork" and "breath retraining". Campbell practically walks through good breathing patterns including how to properly take a deep breath. Campbell's best takeaway is to use your breathing as a way to hit the reset button throughout the day. Andy Matthews is a former Professional Golfer and a winner on the Mackenzie (Canadian) Tour.  He is now a Pilot, and the Director of Golf Performance for Neuropeak Pro and he joins us to talk about the importance of good breathing and its influence on overall health, well-being, stress reduction and golf performance. Andy delves into Precision (Diaphragmatic) Breathing and how it can can help you (1) Relax,  (2) Improve Muscle Function and prevent strain during exercise, (3) Increase Blood Oxygen levels, (4) Make it easier for your Body to Release Gas Waste from your Lungs, (5) Reduce Blood Pressure and (6) Lower Heart Rate.  As part of the Precision Breathing discussion Andy also contrasts Nasal and Mouth Breathing and their commensurate effects on the Nervous System. He also talks about how proper breathing can improve Heart Rate Variability (HRV) which is a function of a balanced Autonomic Nervous System.  A higher HRV can lead to better Sleep, Enhanced Cognitive Performance, Increased Adaptability and Resiliency and a Better Stress Response. All of these factors lead to better performance on and off the golf course and Andy talks about how Intentional Breathing can lead to an improved Physiological state and the ability to prepare for both powerful Drives and deft touch Greenside shots. You have heard countless PGA TOUR professionals and coaches talk about breathing properly under pressure.  Thanks to Andy Matthews, and the Neuropeak Pro NTel Belt, you can know how to do so, practice properly and chart your improvement. Also, take advantage of a special promo code to get a 1-Year Free Membership to the Neuropeak Training module with the purchase of the NTel Belt.  Code - OntheMark This podcast is also available on YouTube.
