*CORRECTION: At 18:59, we start talking about nasal "turbicles". We say this word a lot. We get excited, and even question if "turbicles" is the right word, before agreeing that it's the right word, and carrying on. Future editing Karinda realises we in fact meant to say "nasal turbinates" - not turbicles. Turbicles aren't a thing. You're cordially invited to laugh at our mistake. You can suss out what these look like and their function hereIN THIS EP:We dive deep into the practice of mouth taping and its impressive benefits for sleep quality and overall health. We go through our personal experiences with mouth taping, different types of tapes, and address common concerns and misconceptions (we get it, it seems odd at first, or scary at most!). Let's explore the link between nasal breathing, nitric oxide production, and improved oxygenation and recovery, and how mouth taping can aid in reducing snoring and sleep apnea. We pondered the genetics of smelling ants before this great episode! The main topic was a new study that found the brain may use myelin lipids for fuel during low glucose conditions like marathons. This could have massive implications for how we think about fueling and fatigue resistance, including for cognitive function. Our big theory: fueling is just as much about nourishing and protecting the brain as it is the legs. And this one was full of amazing topics! Other topics: the resurrection of the green shorts, “tension” training via uphill biking and running, heat suit training, genetic data, why post-exercise ketones may be most beneficial after longer efforts, the wild connections between heat response and evolution, body image and clothing choices, heart rate after layoffs, racing athletes we coach, dealing with break-ups, the art of sweat testing, and our frustration with nose-breathing recommendations.May your shorts be green and long,-Megan and DavidClick "Claim Reward" for free credit at The Feed here: thefeed.com/swap Buy Janji's amazing gear: https://janji.com/ (code "SWAP")For weekly bonus podcasts, articles, and videos: patreon.com/swap

I did a mini-lesson on the benefits of nose or "nasal" breathing for my PE kids a few weeks ago. Here's how I explained the health benefits of breathing through the nose. Keep it simple.
Let's explore the profound impact of breathing on overall health with Dr. Sachin Patel. Dr. Patel details the numerous benefits of proper breathing, including its role in detoxification, pH regulation, emotional balance, and even spiritual experiences. He emphasizes the importance of nasal breathing over mouth breathing, explaining how it enhances nitric oxide levels and supports the immune system. Key Takeaways: Breathing Properly Matters: Optimal breathing removes toxic CO2, fuels mitochondria, regulates pH, supports emotional balance, and detoxifies the body. Nasal vs. Mouth Breathing: Nasal breathing filters, pressurizes, and moistens air, enhances nitric oxide production, and supports the immune system, whereas mouth breathing can induce anxiety and health issues. Physiological Sigh Technique: This breathing method involves a three-stage breath and exhaling with a sigh, helping to achieve calmness and balance. Breathing and Emotional States: Different breathing patterns can steer emotional states, such as crying, laughing, or feeling relief. More of Dr. Sachin Patel: Dr. Sachin Patel is a father, husband, philanthropist, functional medicine practice success coach, speaker, author, breathwork facilitator, and plant medicine advocate. He is convinced that “the doctor of the future is the patient” and he has committed himself to helping others raise their consciousness, activate their inner doctor, and initiate their deepest healing through the use of lifestyle, and breathwork. Dr. Patel founded The Living Proof Institute through which he pioneered a revolutionary approach to patient-centered healthcare. Sachin coaches hundreds of practitioners around the world so that they are empowered to deliver affordable and inspired care to their communities through his Perfect Practice Mentorship Program. He is an advocate of transforming the healthcare paradigm and he has devoted his life to the betterment of health care for both patients and practitioners. You may feel that you get more oxygen when you breathe in through your mouth, but the science shows, it's just not true. In the latest episode of The Darin Olien Show, I sit down with Patrick McKeown from Oxygen Advantage, to discuss the fascinating connections between nose breathing, facial aesthetics, and overall health. We begin by discussing how choosing a good-looking face is related to proper breathing and delve into the problems associated with mouth breathing. Our conversation goes over the high-level functions of the nose and the importance of conscious deep breathing, including when and why to do it. We introduce the concept of hyperoxygenation and the BOLT (body oxygen level test) and explore various ways to improve oxygen saturation. We also discuss the consequences of not breathing properly and what you might be missing out on. Throughout the episode, we emphasize the importance of proper breathing techniques and their impact on various aspects of our lives, from physical health and appearance to mental well-being and success. Patrick McKeown grew up with debilitating asthma. In 1998, he found an article in an Irish newspaper about the Buteyko breathing method. He tried the exercise to unblock his nose and was struck by how well it worked. Since then, he has become a leading expert on breathing and an advocate for its health benefits. Too many runners train in ‘the grey zone', too fast for an easy run but too slow for a hard run. Nose breathing is a natural way to ensure your easy runs are easy, because you can not supply enough oxygen to the muscles if you run too fast.A 2018 study published in the International Journal of Exercise Science showed breathing through your nose makes your heart rate higher than breathing through your mouth, at the same pace.Listen, watch and read on as we go super deep on this.We believe people learn wholistically and by different means so this podcast is now available as a Youtube video and written blog post here. What You Will LearnHow our current training is goingThe concept around how training actually makes you weakerHow, why and when breathing through your mouth vs your nose works best and for what type of runnerThe dangers of nose breathingThe great debate… caffeine or not before a workout? And a few more cool things to help you perform better in training, racing and life!LinksHow much time should you really take off? https://www.trainingpeaks.com/blog/losing-and-regaining-fitness/Nose Breathing vs Mouth Breathing Article - https://www.runnersworld.com/training/a33993505/nasal-breathing/Mike's Instagram Post On Breathing https://www.instagram.com/reel/CQfLMoOD5OF/?utm_medium=share_sheetMike Trees Instagram - https://instagram.com/run.nrgDLake Creates Instagram - https://instagram.com/dlakecreatesOne Percent Better - SPONSORLike what you're hearing? In this episode, Laurel and Sarah discuss bracing and breathing. Why are we all so confused about our breathing mechanics and convinced we're doing it wrong, no matter what we're doing? When is the right (and wrong) time to brace when lifting something? What's the difference between bracing and bearing down? And is navel to spine even doing what we think it's doing? You will learn: Is there a right and a wrong way to breathe How social media influences our sense of right and wrong breathing Breathing vs bracing in yoga, Pilates, and strength training Common postural tension that can impact breathing Sarah's favorite injury How Sarah teaches breathing in the clinic Anatomy of breathing What bracing for a heavy lift actually entails (hint: it's not bearing down) When to use bracing in strength training The value of trunk stability and what navel to spine is actually doing Whether pranayama techniques should be done all the time How to cue diaphragmatic breathing Whether pranayama is the most efficient way to challenge the cardiovascular system and increase breath capacityAnd more!Sign up here for the Live Strength Training Webinar on Sept 14th 10am PT/1pm ET with 30 day replaySeason 1 Episode 10 Is there a Right and a Wrong Way to Breathe?Season 1 Episode 19 Oh NO! The simple act of breathing is much more complex than you may realize. We just simply take it for granted.Crossing cultural boundaries and spanning as far back as you could imagine, breath has been revered as the bridge between the physical and spiritual realms. From the yogic pranayama of ancient India to the rhythmic chants in Native American ceremonies, breath has always been harnessed as a catalyst for transformation and connection. Scientific studies are piling up that unravel the profound physiological, psychological, emotional and spiritual benefits of conscious breathing. It's a resilient and multifaceted practice that has found its place as a revolutionary tool for healing and enhanced well-being in the modern world. After experiencing immediate breakthroughs in just one class, Clairannoyance co-hosts Megan and Ryan sat down with world renowned breathwork instructor Jon Paul Crimi to learn more about his background and unique approach. Jon Paul infuses his contagious, unabashed personality into his work while paying great respect to breathwork as an ancient practice. His no-nonsense attitude both in and out of class is rare to find; he is not your stereotypical New Age teacher, and this is not a "woo woo" class. (Which is to say, this is a gold star standard for Clairannoyance.)Tune in as Megan and Ryan share about their consciousness-altering breathwork experience, learn from Jon Paul about his unique style of "conscious connected breathing" or "circular breathing," and discover all sorts of unexpected bits of wisdom, like why you should never hand a tissue to someone who is crying. Let them ugly cry. If they want the tissue they'll get it!In all seriousness, we do not endorse lightly. This is the only breathwork instructor we could image going to. We are immediately incorporating breathwork into our routine. Please consider signing up for a class (more info below). If you're currently breathing, you need to see what you're missing out on. About Jon Paul CrimiOriginally from Boston, in his early 20s Jon Paul Crimi moved to Los Angeles and quickly became one of the most sought-after celebrity trainers and sober coaches in the country. Unexpectedly, he found himself in a breathwork class and had a massive transformation that first time. Knowing he had to share this technique, he not only began teaching breathwork, but developed his own unique style and quickly began selling out breathwork classes all over Los Angeles. Jon Paul currently resides in Bend, Oregon with his wife and two children but returns monthly to Los Angeles to teach sold-out breathwork classes and workshops, as well as lead his in-demand Breathwork Teacher Trainings. What makes Jon Paul Crimi stand apart is his east coast no-nonsense approach. He has removed the “New Agey” aspects of breathwork, and now private companies and organizations are filling his calendar. CEOs and the “Forbes set” have found themselves in his classes and have hired him to teach breathwork to their employees. Jon Paul has broadened his classes to include customized workshops and corporate retreats for groups all over the United States. Jon Paul has appeared on Good Morning America and has been featured in The Huffington Post and The Hollywood Reporter. You can find him on countless talk shows and podcasts both in the United States and around the world, as he continues his work to make breathwork more accessible and mainstream. Jon Paul believes everyone can benefit from this practice, and he has Olympians as well as Oscar, Emmy, and Grammy winners to prove it. Witnessing people visibly transform, often after just one breathwork session, is why he greets each day excited to turn people towards their most authentic selves and he has made it his life work to reach as many people as possible.Connect with Jon PaulSIGN UP FOR HIS CLASSES HERE! The class this Sunday, July 16 (direct link here!) will be available for a special 10-day replay instead of the usual 3-day replay! Trust us, you'll be so happy you get to keep doing it. This week's show brought to you by: Lagoon Countless research studies have shown that pillow selection can have a dramatic impact on sleep quality. For example, a systematic review of ergonomic sleep data demonstrated that selecting a pillow based on your sleep position (on your back or on your side) dramatically improved sleep quality and reduced spinal pain. Likewise, research has shown that pillow firmness and height also had positive impacts on sleep quality when adjusted for sleep position and the subject's height. Multiple studies have also shown that pillow stuffing that can keep you cool throughout the night leads to much better deep sleep outcomes. That's why we love the pillows designed by Lagoon. Lagoon specializes in making pillows designed specifically for runners and athletes to help them optimize their sleep and recovery. Their sleep quiz pairs you with the perfect pillow for you based on sleep position, body size and more. And the data on sleep improvement isn't only from research papers. We announce a new series we are calling FUNdaMENTALS, where we break down a specific topic that we hold as fundamental or foundational for all runners, regardless of your pace or race (or lack there of). These will be shorter episodes & we'll be weaving these in every other episode. We hope that these are helpful to runners of all levels who want to improve their running over the long term. This week we cover the importance of the easy run. What is an easy run?The easy run is where all running begins. It is where all training begins.Conversational Different for beginners & advanced runners? The easy run makes you fitter, not slower. Can you run too easy, too long? No. What happens when we want our easy run to be faster? Don't. Now that marathon training sessions tend to be longer, recovery easy runs become more important. Doubling easy days. Why the 10% Rule is bullshit. Consider using the Bump & Hold method. Nose Breathing for the win. Our take on Phil Maffetone's method. The Running Rogue podcast episode (Episode #97 - The Maffetone Method-Oct 2018) referenced by Steve. Evidently there was another episode cut in 2020 (Episode #178 - Maffetone Method REDUX - April 2020). We have not listened to this second episode & have no idea what they say there. Why neuromuscular work is critical. It's essential that biomechanics & speed be considered with the MM. "What you don't use, you lose."
