Have you ever wondered if you are on the right path? Or perhaps if you are really living true to yourself? Bowen Dwelle was a teenage boozehound and suffered from anxiety and depression until the age of 48. Throughout his life Bowen searched for meaning, and for a life that was really true to himself. Throughout his journey, Bowen discovered his purpose as “here to tell the truth” about depression, alcohol—and intuition, and went on to become a successful entrepreneur, writer and freedom coach. In this episode, Bowen uncovers how your intuition is fundamental in discovering a path that is true to you, and how you can strengthen it to find more meaning in your own life. Bowen speaks about how the process of unearthing his purpose went parallel with unwinding his depression, and how through strengthening his intuition, he started to see indications of what really mattered to him in the world. Through perseverance and tuning into himself, Bowen stepped into his purpose and now lives a very fulfilled life. If you are in a position where you feel stuck, or unsure of which path to take, tune into this episode, and discover how you too, already have all the answers inside of you to live your life’s purpose! Bowen Dwelle was born in 1970 and raised and lived most of his life in San Francisco. He now lives outside the machine, #homefree, and mobile in his van, spending much of his time in the high mountains of the American West. He did not discover his purpose until recently. He fell into a first career in software at an early age because they had computers around the house and finds it very fascinating. He got good at working on it and there were a lot of interesting jobs that had to do with computers as the internet was just coming online in the mid-’90s. Even as he succeeded in his first career, he knew that he does not want to continue on that path. As Bowen said, “I didn’t know what my path was, but I knew that wasn’t it”. Along the way, he managed to start a business on his own, a small conference that gradually became a successful business. He worked on it for many years that it became successful enough to be sold in early 2015. The process of unearthing his purpose went in parallel with unwinding the depression that he had experienced for much of my life. He thinks it goes hand in hand. He was depressed because he didn’t have a purpose, and as a man, aimlessness is failure. He didn’t have purpose because his intuition wasn’t working—and for the same reason, he couldn’t move beyond his anxious and depressed state of mind. He couldn’t hear the messages or see the signs, so he didn’t know which way to go. As he gradually reawakened my intuition, he began to see indications of what mattered to him and of what was keeping him in such a low place emotionally. Finally, he emerged and was able to connect with his intuition, and with a sense of real purpose. Bowen is a paraglider, kite surfer, and entrepreneur who moved into his minivan camper the day after the last time he was on the podcast. He and I both have the Mercedes Metris diy camper van, and we hooked up down in San Diego county to talk about his first few months in van life and where he's headed in his van to camper conversion in the future. We talked about parking, travel around North America, and his plan to ship his van over to Europe next year. It's always fascinating to compare and contrast experiences with other folks living on the road to hear how we perceive our space in this nomadic adventure.
Bowen Dwelle lives in his van. In this podcast, Bowen talks about leaving his hometown of San Francisco after high school, what it was that brought him back, some jobs and businesses he's had, his love of the outdoors, and his latest venture: Second Sight coaching. If you missed Part 1, please go back and listen. We recorded this podcast on the Upper Sanchez steps in August 2019. Film photography by Michelle Kilfeather

Bowen is a kite surfer, a paraglider, and an entrepreneur. We met through instagram when he reached out asking questions about the build inside my van. He has a Mercedes Metris too, and we connected over mounting for a couple of different pieces of furniture. On a recent trip to the Bay Area, we hit him up about getting on the podcast, and we rushed up to catch him on the eve of his entry into full-time #vanlife. We had a great conversation about all sorts of topics, from action sports, to adventure, to urban planning. He's out on a great trip for the summer, and I'm looking forward to where his experiment into full-time #vanning takes him.

Originally aired July 20, 2017 Bowen is a lifelong outdoors sports enthusiast (skateboarding, snowboarding, rock climbing, sailing, windsurfing, surfing, SUP, open water swimming, trail running, MTB, kitesurfing, paragliding) and has in the last ten years become semi-professional kitesurfer. While most people think of kitesurfing for the freestyle (tricks) and perhaps also for wave riding, there are other disciplines that are gaining traction and progressing the sport: course racing, foil board kiting and his specialty: long distance. He has learned techniques to allow truly long-distance travel – 100+ miles in a day and 1000+ miles in a single journey by kite! Here's one we haven't covered yet. Bowen Dwelle joins the ASP to talk about Long Distance Exploratory Kitesurfing, Foil Boarding, Flow, the long distance experience, athletic journeys, the nature of (what is) adventure, athletics and intuition, and the new normal in adventure sports. Bowen's Adventure Portfolio: I am a lifelong outdoors sports enthusiast (skateboarding, snowboarding, rock climbing, sailing, windsurfing, surfing, SUP, open water swimming, trail running, MTB, kitesurfing, paragliding) and have in the last ten years become a passionate and now semi-professional kitesurfer. While most people think of kitesurfing for the freestyle (tricks) and perhaps also for wave riding, there are other disciplines that are gaining traction and progressing the sport: course racing, foil board kiting and my specialty: long distance. We have developed techniques to allow truly long distance travel – 100+ miles in a day and 1000+ miles in a single journey -- by kite, and we have done several trips on the coast of Brazil and elsewhere using these techniques. I was fortunate enough to be one of the principal athletes in a film production that we just finished about the long distance experience, exploring the northern coast of Brazil by kite. We shot last summer (2016) and just finished editing and it's now screening on Canal OFF in Brazil. In the meantime I was in the Philippines in March 2017 shooting another similar expedition and will be back in Brazil in September 2017 shooting an entire series of long distance exploratory kiting, from Atins to the mouth of the Amazon and up the river to Santarem!
