My guest this episode is Richard Butler, who works for the German asset manager, Allianz Global Investors and is a Board Member for Amos Bursary. Funnily enough, this was recorded back in 2019. Call it fate, call it destiny, call it kismet or whatever you will, but we were talking about Black Lives Matter back in 2019 and now this discussion has become more topical than ever! It’s really interesting to hear Richard’s thoughts on the BLM movement back in 2019 and how it compares to the sentiment in the UK today! He is a Board member of the charity, the Amos Bursary, which aims to ensure talented men of Afro-Caribbean descent have the opportunity to excel in education and beyond. For this episode’s recommendation, I recommend reading Ben Horowitz's What You Do Is Who You Are: How to Create Your Business Culture (https://amzn.to/3gt8zPH). Richard recommends reading Michael Watkin's The First 90 Days (https://amzn.to/31GNXyY) and watching Kidulthood (https://amzn.to/31IZeim). Hello!! I'm happy to announce that I'm FINALLY posting my first episode of 2020! My guest this episode is Neta. Neta is based in Frankfurt and curently works for a German asset manager. She describes her previous life as a near professional classical pianist and we discuss her identity as Russo German Jew. For this episode’s recommendation, instead of recommending a book, I recommend you check out poet, Rupi Kaur’s Instagram. She has posted free writing workshops. They’re a fantastic and free way to explore yourself and express yourself creatively. I’ve been doing it myself for the past few weekends and I find it a really calming way to start my morning. Neta recommends listening to Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto and reading Goethe's Faust, Part I or Homer's Iliad. It may be September and starting to cool down in London but, never fear, the latest What They Don’t Teach You summer sizzler is here! This episode will BLOW. YOUR. MIND. My guest this episode is Ena Xena of openwing.co.uk and fullbodyorgasm.net. Ena is a sex therapist, an expert on tantra and an Orgasmic Life Coach. This is no Sex Ed 101 as taught in school… You might think she’d make some mind-blowing statements or share some unbelievable beliefs, but her discussion primarily centres on eroticism, intimacy and connection. The book featured in this episode is Esther Perel’s Mating in Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence. Ena recommends Cassandra Lorius’ Tantric Sex: Making Love Last. In honour of the summer season, I present to you a fun, uptempo episode with some fantastic musicians from the London up-and-coming band, Tangerine Rye. Tangerine Rye is a band in the soul-rock genre with addictive pop hooks featuring a super talented trio: Jordan, as guitarist and lead signer, Hal as bassist and Oscar, drummer. It's a super fun episode that's essentially a riffing jam session (I picked the hardest themes I could think of and got them to create songs on the spot!). Plus, tune in as I get to pick Tangerine Rye’s brain on their creative songwriting process. This episode's guest, Faiza M, grew up in Tower Hamlets, the poorest borough in central London. Despite all odds she was the first from her family to qualify as a lawyer in the City. She has achieved so much, not just in her own personal career, but with her mission to effect positive change in her community and improve cultural awareness. Faiza shares her insight about growing up as a traditional Muslim female in London, dating life in Muslim culture as well as her experience being one of a handful of visible Muslims in the workplace. Listen for her insight into life as a Muslim Londoner and to gain a new perspective in opposition to typical Islamaphobic sentiments. The book featured in this episode is B.K.S Iyengar's Core of the Yoga Sutras. Faiza recommends reading M. In the month of February, we discuss the most serious topic yet on What They Don’t Teach You: depression. Paula bravely and frankly shares her experience of dealing with depression. She's suffered from depression for as long as she can remember. She shares her perspective on tips people can implement if someone close to them is going through depression. We also lift the curtain behind the word ‘depression’ and examine what thoughts lurk underneath the term and discuss tools we’ve found essential to helping us deal with this mental illness. In this episode, Paula and I both recommend checking out Insight Timer, a free meditative app. Separately, I also personally recommend people check out EdEx’s The Science of Happiness Course (woops, in the intro I say Coursera instead of EdEx, my bad!), provided by leading positive psychologists from the University of Berkeley. It’s free to join and is a powerful aid in increasing one’s happiness immeasurably. Helloooo listeners - happy new year! I'm excited to get back into the podcasting swing of things. I'm honoured to welcome Luke as my latest guest. Luke originally grew up in Shanghai, China attending boarding school from a young age. He then moved to Vancouver, Canada at the age of 18. I loved talking to him because he's so open and honest about his feelings and how his past has shaped him to become the man he is today. He talks about moving to Canada and his dream of becoming a Canadian citizen and Canadian police officer. In particular, he shares his experience of lifestyle differences between cultural and parental expectations growing up in China versus Canada.  The book I recommend in this episode is the memoir written by the ever-inspiring Michelle Obama, Becoming, a work chronicling the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. Luke recommends Bessel van der Kolk M.D.'s The Body Keeps the Score. I'm pleased to announce Reggie Nelson as my latest guest. Growing up in a council estate in east London, Reggie decided at the age of seventeen to go knocking on doors in the richest neighbourhood in London to ask for tips and tricks to become successful himself. From there he found an unlikely mentor who gave him an internship and guided him to go to university and to attain a job as an analyst in the City. His story has blown up all over the news, including on the Daily Mail and the BBC. You can watch the BBC short video, From East London to the City: How door knocking change this boy's life, on his story here. Reggie now works in the City along with being a public speaker and youth mentor. In the previous Episode 4, Toshe discusses the culture shock of moving from a small town in Bulgaria to working in the City in London. In this episode, Toshe gives an honest, no holds barred account about his exploration of his sexuality. He discuses his first guy-on-guy experience, how he came to terms with his sexuality, the exciting world of gay hookups and what it's like to be in a committed same-sex relationshp. Instead of a book recommendation, this week I recommend watching Queer Eye on Netflix. This show is about the Fabulous Five, five gay guys, who help individuals undergo a make-better, i.e. a makeover with heart. I highly recommend checking it out if you haven't yet.  What They Don't Teach You is also on iTunes. Click here to access!

Episode 5 will cover his coming to terms with his sexuality and the specific struggles he's gone through being eastern European and being attracted to the same sex.
