Millions around the world wait at bus stops every single day, heading to school, work, or back home. And for some reason, those bus stops feel safe. The tiny bench covered by the tiny canopy is a piece of sanctuary on an otherwise mammoth and alien road. On one such bus stop in Norway, in the early morning hours of February 3rd 2010, waited a young Pakistani woman, as she had countless mornings in the past. But little did she know, this morning and this bus stop was going to be different. Under that bus stop's canopy, was going to be the last moment of peace she would ever know. This is the story of that morning, that bus stop, that woman. This is the story of Faiza Ashraf. This week, Faiza Shaheen announced she has resigned from the Labour Party, after a shock email revealed she had been deselected as a candidate in this year's General Election. The Labour Party candidate selection committee called into question tweets that Faiza had 'liked', some from 10 years ago. But behind the apparent distractions of old tweets is something far more sinister: what Faiza has described as “a systematic campaign of racism, Islamophobia, and bullying". Are people of colour held to a higher standard in public and in the media? We discuss this, how the routine dehumanisation of brown skinned people has lead to desensitisation when it comes to coverage of Palestine, and why we need to push beyond 'representation'. Plus, your round up of the headlines through a Media Storm lens - Government policies putting a dampener on Pride Month, a hidden story about Israeli interference in the ICC that didn't make it to the mainstream, does the media gives Nigel Farage a free pass, and was the viral AI-generated 'All Eyes on Rafah' image 'slacktivism'? A Human Approach to Schooling with Dr. Faiza Jamil Power Quote: We lose our ability to see the whole Description:You can think of today's show as a bit of a thought experiment. What changes if we make relationships, at every level of the school, THE priority? It is a thought experiment, but we also have lots of experience that tells us how that experiment could turn out. Guest Bio:Faiza M. Jamil is a former K-12 teacher and currently serves as Associate Professor of Education and Human Development in the area of Learning Sciences at Clemson University. Jamil is the Founding Director of the Contexts of Learning and Development Lab, where she conducts interdisciplinary research with a focus on educational equity across learning contexts. She is the author of Public Education in Turbulent Times: Innovative Strategies for Leadership and Learning. Warmup questions:· We always like to start with a celebration. What are you celebrating today?· Is there a story that will help listeners understand why you are doing what you do? Questions/Topics/Prompts· Talk about importance of being colleagues and investing time together· School purpose => individual purposeo How do we prioritize the relationship pieceo Task v persono CIRCLE model· Mindset shift· Mental health Closing questions:· What part of your own leadership are you still trying to get better at?· If listeners could take just one thing away from today's podcast, what would it be?· Before we go, is there anything else that you'd like to share with our listeners?· Where can people learn more about you and your work… Close· We covered a lot of ground today. I encourage you to do three things:o Monitor your own inner dialog – when you say you don't have time to listen, to build relationships, what are you actually doing instead?o Begin asking people – teachers and students – “what would make school better for you?”o Use your expertise to ask powerful questions instead of goving powerful answers.· Leadership is a journey and thank you for choosing to walk some of this magical path with me.· You can find links to all sorts of stuff in the show notes, including my website https://www.frederickbuskey.com/· I love hearing from you so consider email me at frederick@frederickbuskey.com or connecting with me on LinkedIn.· Please remember to subscribe, rate, and review the podcast.· Have a great rest of the week, be present for others and, more importantly, take time to reflect and recover so you can continue to live and lead better.· Cheers! Among urban designers and municipal officials, the term encroachment is defined as a deviation from the official master plan. But in cities today, such informal modifications to the urban fabric are deeply enmeshed with formal planning procedures. Master Plans and Encroachments: The Architecture of Informality in Islamabad (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2023) examines informality in the high-modernist city of Islamabad as a strategic conformity to official schemes and regulations rather than as a deviation from them. For the new administrative capital of Pakistan designed in 1959 by Greek architect and planner Constantinos A. Doxiadis, Islamabad's master plan offers a clear template of formal urban design within which informal spaces and processes have been articulated. Drawing on deep archival research, wide-ranging interviews, and an array of visual material, including photographs, maps, and architectural drawings, Dr. Faiza Moatasim shows how Islamabad's master plan is not simply a blueprint that guides future urban development or makes its violations apparent; it is used by both city officials and citizens to develop informal spaces that accommodate unfulfilled needs and desires of those living and working in the city. Master Plans and Encroachments is the first book that examines the informal practices of both the privileged and the underprivileged. The book highlights how low-, middle-, and upper-income people do not randomly build informal spaces; they strategically use architectural techniques to support their informal claims to space, which are often met with the government's tacit approval. In this episode, Tayeba Batool talks to Dr. Faiza Moatasim about the spatial, material, class, and gendered negotiations and experiences that are imprinted on the city through Masterplans. Dr. Moatasim also shares how her research on a postcolonial city such as Islamabad projects onto urbanisms and encroachments elsewhere, and what we can learn the complexities of urban planning and architecture. The conversation also creates a space to address experiences with publishing inter-disciplinary research and highlight the necessity of learning from cities that are often overlooked in the dialogue about and on urban spaces. Dr. Faiza Moatasim is an Assistant Professor of Architecture in Urbanism and Urban Design at the USC School of Architecture. Tayeba Batool is a PhD Candidate in Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania. Tayeba Batool is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania.
On this week's episode, I chat to the wonderful Faiza Shaheen, author of Know Your Place, which is part-memoir, and part-research-based analysis about class in the UK. In the book, Faiza discusses her own working-class background, and the effects of austerity on her family, especially her mother who was relying on benefits due to her health. She breaks down the very many things in society which helped her to graduate from the University of Oxford, including a state-school system with good teachers, a welfare state system, and free universal healthcare. But she also breaks down how a person from a working class background has to work up to 4,000 times harder to succeed, due to the structure of our system. We explore some big questions about social justice, social mobility and equality and fairness in the UK, talking about Faiza's political career, research and insights. We break down what we really mean by social mobility, and what really matters when it comes to representation in government. Dr. Faiza Shaheen is an economist, writer, and commentator. She is the author of a range of materials and publications covering the most salient social and economic debates of our times, including inequality, austerity, immigration, youth unemployment and social mobility. Faiza has over 15 years of experience researching the trends and consequences of inequality, as well as designing policies and campaigns to address the causes of inequality and exclusion. In 2017, Faiza was named the Observer Rising Star for Campaigning, nominated as Asian Woman of the Year and included in the Top 100 Influencers on the Left list in the UK.As always, I'd love to hear what you think of this conversation! Set in Ghana, Abena and Faiza, both 14 years old, meet in a busy market place where Faiza earns a meager living being a kayayoo (a porter girl). Abena left her plush lifestyle behind to spend the summer holidays working in her auntie's market cloth shop. The girls quickly develop a deep friendship; it's inconsequential that they don't speak the same language. Both are bright and curious about the world and are way out of their comfort zone. Auntie cannot support the friendship as she doesn't want Abena associating with a poor, uneducated kayayoo, yet in Faiza, Abena sees well beyond the social and economic disparities. Transcript here
“It's important to make sure the teen perspective on mental health is understood. Having kids speak about it is really relevant. By hearing teenagers speak, it makes you feel represented….Hearing other teen voices comforted me and provided a safe space.” ~ Matt Suescun and Faiza Ashar from On Our Minds Do you remember what it felt like to be a teenager? As we get older, it's easy to romanticize our teen years. We were young, we had our whole lives ahead of us, and life was easy. But was it really? If we're honest, most of us will admit that our teenage years were TOUGH. Full of teen angst yes, but also crowded with worry about our place in the world, where life would take us, and what kind of world would await us when it was time to take on the role of an adult. Today's teens have no less on their plates. In fact, given the last several years of global challenges, they likely have more. That's why we at Brilliantly Resilient were so thrilled to hear from Matt Suescun and Faiza Ashar, the season 2 hosts of PBS's On Our Minds. On Our MInds deals with the mental health issues facing young people today. The show provides an opportunity for teens to share their concerns, worries, and yes, fears about a subject many are afraid to speak about publicly. With so much noise in the world, it's essential to LISTEN to our young people. They are wise, thoughtful and unfortunately, struggling. Thanks to PBS for giving them a voice; let's hear what they have to say. Tune in to hear more from the amazing young people on this episode of the Brilliantly Resilient podcast. Thanks Matt and Faiza–we love you!! Let's be Brilliantly Resilient together! XO, KS & MFB
