The WSJ wants readers to think that Trump is too stupid to coup—despite Jack Smith's indictment showing a very clear plan. And for those on the left and right arguing that we survived once before, there are hundreds of thousands of people who would still be alive today if Trump had managed Covid better. Plus, the laughable GOP civility police, Kamala's potential trouble in Michigan, the MAGA ads that are simultaneously antisemitic, Islamaphobic, and misogynist, and the Green parties in Europe want Jill Stein to step aside. Guest host Ramraajh Sharvendiran talks to a sports writer in Atlanta, just ahead of Canada's soccer game against Argentina's top ranked team. It's not about winning, nescessarily but it is about running. Also, if you are thinking about a green roof then you might want to listen in. And have you seen that Islamaphobic truck driving around the city? A conversation about who that hurts.
A video has captured a cube van driving around the city that broadcasts a video with footage of Muslims praying with the message "Is this Syria? Is this Iraq? No. This is Canada. Wake up Canada. You are under siege." Police are investigating it as a hate crime but is it? Jerry Agar is joined by Richard Moon, Professor of Law, University of Windsor who is an expert on the subject.

European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas has been in Canberra this week. Among other things he's been finding a way to “mend fences” to find a path to a successful free trade agreement with Australia after the failure of talks in Osaka. Halso talks to SBS's Political Correspondent Anna Henderson about Europe's apparent surge to the right, with Italy's Giorgia Meloni and the recent election of Geert Vilders in the Netherlands. He also discusses Islamaphobic nationalism in the EU and the looming deal on immigration the EU is preparing to finalise.
Steve Baker joins us today from Washington, D.C. Steve experienced first-hand the lawlessness in our nation's Capital. He was mugged last night on a street as he was walking and lost his laptop, car keys, and many documents he needed for work. That illustrates how "open" our nation is to lawlessness that our leaders refuse to check through enforcing laws. Secretary of State Blinken continues to spend time in the Middle East begging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to order a "cease-fire" in Israel's massive military power against Hamas. Netanyahu again made clear Israel will continue until every member of Hamas is dead. He did, however, indicate a "possible" scenario for a cease-fire if Hamas releases every hostage they are holding. VP Harris proudly announced a new agency created to stop Islamaphobic acts against Muslim people that comprise about 1% of all such attacks. It's odd the Biden Admin. took such actions. Why? Jews in the U.S. comprise 2+% of our population, but 65% of hate crimes in the U.S. are committed against Jews!

“I smiled in the face of bigotry.” Shaymaa Ismaa'eel Muslim who stood up to Islamophobia with joy The Art: Ink drawing of Shaymaa Ismaa'eel flashing a bright smile and peace sign while wearing an orange hijab. She's drawn on a map of Washington, DC, where she encountered the anti-Muslim protestors that inspired her smile. The Story: It was a warm spring day in Washington, DC and Shaymaa Ismaa'eel was attending a large Islamic conference when she noticed a loud group of protestors outside brandishing Islamaphobic signs and hurling abuses on the attendees. Their presence was upsetting the attendees, but most tried to hide their feelings and not give the protestors attention. Ismaa'eel's friend said to her, “It's Sunday, It's Easter. Don't they have something better to do?” to which Ismaa'eel rejoined, “Clearly, they need something from us,” and she decided to respond to them in a non-confrontational way: she asked her friend to take a photo for her. In the photo, Ismaa'eel is wearing a hijab and squatting on the curb with a huge smile across her face while flashing a peace sign. The angry protestors and their rude signs and insults served as the backdrop. She shared the photo on Twitter a couple days later, writing “On April 21st I smiled in the face of bigotry and walked away feeling the greatest form of accomplishment” and on Instagram, with a quote from the Prophet Muhammad saying, “Kindness is a mark of faith. Those who are not kind have no faith.” Her posts quickly went viral, racking up 100,000s of mostly positive interactions online. “I wanted them to see my joy and to combat their hatred with kindness.” she said of the photo. “There's a saying from our Prophet saying, ‘Smile is charity,' and that's just me personally anyway, always smiling. I wanted to show them that we are going to remain kind and unapologetic and continue to spread love in the face of bigotry.” A behavioral therapist with children on the autism spectrum near DC, Ismaa'eel continues, “I'm all about being unapologetic about who you are—don't let anyone dim your light.” Music: This episode contains music from Geovane Bruno, SoulProdMusic, and ItsWatR. Alise, Milly, and Amanda react to a huge week in politics, from Joe Biden's marathon press conference to a rough all-nighter for voting rights. Then they roast an absurd Florida bill that prohibits making white people uncomfortable about America's racist past. For the pop culture segment, they break down racist, Islamaphobic, and anti-vax social media posts from “Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” cast member Jennie Nguyen. They discuss why she should be fired from the show, but also acknowledge the common experience of finding out a person you admire or cherish has racist or dehumanizing views
The war of words is escalating between Rep. Lauren Boebert and Rep. Ilhan Omar over Islamaphobic comments from Boebert at a fundraiser. But the political math is tough for Speaker Pelosi, who must decide whether or not to discipline the somewhat penitent Republican, Boebert. The betting action is very fluid and exciting on this one. The Boys also talk about the FDA's potential approval of COVID wonder drug Paxlovid, and the stalled Defense Authorization.

(Season finale) This was supposed to be a light episode. It's hot, it's been a long year of COVID and we all need a break. But it seems as though we're never given a chance to just be. From the fatal Islamaphobic attacks against a family in London, Ontario to the discovery of hundreds of unmarked graves of Indigenous children at Canada's residential schools to the anti-Asian shootings in Atlanta to police brutality against the Black community - white supremacy never lets up, does it? How can we keep working as though all is normal when we keep feeling like we're constantly under attack? In this episode, we talk with Dr. Shaista Patel, Assistant Professor of Critical Muslim Studies at UC San Diego, and Krittika Ghosh, Executive Director of the Asian/Pacific Islander (A/PI) Domestic Violence Resource Project about searching for joy amidst trauma, the importance of celebrating friendship and communites of care, and the generative possiblities of #TrashyProfSummer. A former head of firearms control at the police says those vetting the man behind the Christchurch mosque shootings should have been concerned when he couldn't provide a reference who knew him when "the front door closes". Joe Green told RNZ a week after the attack that there had been no interview conducted of a spouse, partner or next of kin. The report yesterday confirmed those claims, finding the gunman listed his sister as his closest reference, but she was discounted because she lived in Australia. Instead, vetting officers interviewed a friend he had met during online gaming, and the gaming friend's father. While the gaming friend knew of Tarrant's far right, racist and Islamaphobic beliefs, the friend didn't mention those views during the licencing interviews. Joe Green told reporter Ben Strang that it highlights a failure to train staff over the past decade.

#plugintodevin Show - Devin Thorpe for Congress Guest: Kiyan Banuri Issue: The most issue that is most important to my community is the compounding effects of the COVID-19 pandemic during Ramadan, as well as Islamaphobic rhetoric posited by public officials during the pandemic. As a Muslim, and an active member of the Muslim community, the cessation of congregations--praying at Mosque, reading the Quran, and other issues--have made Ramadan isolating and starkly different for many Muslims. And, tweets of political officials have spread anti-Muslim rhetoric as against the rule of law, social distancing, and gaining preferential treatment. These issues have deep impacts in the Muslim community, and I have felt the lack of knowledge and media coverage of the faith have lead to prejudice and Islamaphobia, especially during these trying times. I believe that exposure of Islam and its traditions, as well as emphasizing the commonality between Islamic and other value systems are important, especially in a time when households are on edge due to various issues such as job losses, the fear of infection or infection, etc. Bio: Kiyan Banuri is a Pakistani-American Muslim who hails from Utah. He currently studies International Relations and Japanese at Tufts University. Prior to college, Kiyan was heavily involved in Policy Debate, ranking amongst the top 25 in the United States, presiding Utah State Champion for 3 years in a row, researching various issues such as immigration, foreign policy, education, and surveillance policy. Learning the power of his own voice, he now wants to promote communicative effectiveness by helping others with their voice and ideas through opportunities in political campaigns, consultancy, and volunteering. He volunteered with the Emerald Project as an Ambassador, helping the non-profit combat the misrepresentations of Islam. And, he currently serves as an Executive Board member of the Tufts Association of South Asians, where he coordinates cultural events and celebrations on campus; these events attract hundreds of attendants, from around the east coast. He also serves as a selected consultant for 180 Degrees Consulting, the world's largest university-based consultancy. As-Salaam Alaikum young & muslim family! Today we have a special guest on Mic #3 today! Mashallah, Author, father, Philanthropist, and community role model Adil Ismaaeel! We sat down with Adil and spoke about black men traveling and being visibly muslim. With his first book, breaking borders, we dive into the fact that Black Men just do not travel...Wether it is a financial issue or the fear of living home...Regardless, this narrative must be changed! We also spoke about the importance of being visibly muslim in todays Islamaphobic society. Brother Adil was able to relate to this situation and he combated it with his own children's book, "My Kufi". The book encourages young black boys to be proud of their muslim identity and proud of what they stand for!! So the book is to inspire young muslim boys to grow into strong muslim men who will stand in the forefront of Islam with our sisters!!! Hope you enjoy this show inshallah! Meanwhile, young women continue to be drugged and raped. [19:00] Cities Burned With Fire (11 minutes) America and Britain are experiencing more internal division than ever. Bible prophecy forecasts that our cities will be burned with fire. In some cities, we’re already starting to get a look at what this means. [30:15] Grand Sweep of History (25 minutes) History was Winston Churchill’s greatest counselor. In this segment, I discuss why we must have a big picture view of history.
So I was listening to a very smart Muslim scholar Dalia Mogahed and she opened my eyes to how "irritatingly" islamaphobic I am and this is a narrative we all can relate to. We've been cultured into seeing people only a certain way and that needs to change. How can we change our prejudiced hearts? Please listen and I am hopeful this can lead you on a path to being more "just". PS: the song I was referring to is "I am not racist" by Joyner Lucas...great song✌

This episode's guest, Faiza M, grew up in Tower Hamlets, the poorest borough in central London. Despite all odds she was the first from her family to qualify as a lawyer in the City. She has achieved so much, not just in her own personal career, but with her mission to effect positive change in her community and improve cultural awareness. Faiza shares her insight about growing up as a traditional Muslim female in London, dating life in Muslim culture as well as her experience being one of a handful of visible Muslims in the workplace. Listen for her insight into life as a Muslim Londoner and to gain a new perspective in opposition to typical Islamaphobic sentiments. Welcome to Rebel Roundup, ladies and gentlemen – and the rest of you – in which we look back at some of the very best commentaries of the week by your favourite Rebels. I’m your host, David Menzies. Attention Loblaws shoppers! There’s an appliance special on right now, in which 12 million of your tax dollars are enabling this multi-billion-dollar conglomerate to purchase new fridges and freezers! Sheila Gunn Reid has all the stone-cold details. Quebec’s anti-burqa law, Bill 21, is being deemed “racist” and “Islamaphobic” by the usual suspects... even though it’s really all about separating mosque from state. Rebel Commander Ezra Levant joins us to explain all. So, after that disastrous Me-Too themed Gillette ad campaign earlier this year, do you think parent company Procter & Gamble learned any advertising lessons? Well, judging by a Tweet for its Venus brand of female razors, the answer is a firm NO. Ben Davies has the skinny on P&G’s latest virtue-signalling marketing flop. And finally letters. I’ll share some of your responses regarding Justin Trudeau’s $1,600-a-plate fundraiser in Toronto last week. Two things: apparently there are still Liberal supporters who adore this guy. Oh, and judging by his motorcade of SUVs that kept their V8 engines running for hours, it would seem that when it comes to reducing our carbon footprint, Justin subscribes to the mantra of do as I say, not as I do.

Since the writ dropped in Alberta, two candidates have resigned from the United Conservative Party over Islamaphobic, white supremacist, homophobic and transphobic messages on social media. This is only the latest controversy for the party. The Jason Kenney campaign has been accused of supporting a 'kamikaze candidate' to help him win the leadership race in 2017, and the RCMP is looking into allegations of voter fraud. Maclean's Alberta correspondent Jason Markusoff says the scandals may not prevent Jason Kenney from winning the premiership. "This is an economically anxious province," says Markusoff. "Albertans are frustrated and anxious, they're looking for some change to make to liberate themselves from the status quo."

It's a festive episode with a special High Low nativity play; written by professional screenwriter (as you will be able to tell) Dolly - and sponsored by frankincense and myrrh. As Amazon and John Lewis declare ambitions to open their end of year sales on Christmas Day itself, and the Bishop of Cambridge descends into outrage, we talk the evolution of ‘family time' and whether online shopping during a day of rest (and/or religion) is a moral issue or merely one of ease and convenience. What about all the people that don't celebrate Christmas? And side note: HOW has Amazon only just launched in Australia? Also up for discussion, Twitter finally rules against hate speech - with the leaders of far right party Britain First suspended from Twitter for Islamaphobic fake news (which was retweeted by Covfefe Trump - natch.) Many online news media outlets, especially those that were borne out of print publications, have paywalls. You might be able to view a handful of articles, but you have to pay to keep reading. However, some paywalls are stricter than others. The Financial Times is strict. I was able to read one article, via a Twitter link, and then no more. How does having such a strict paywall affect on-site community building? Community manager and “comments advocate” Lilah Raptopoulos joins the show to talk about it. Plus: What having wealthier commenters does to the comments How the Financial Times identifies the value of on-site community efforts The thing Lilah would like to do next when she secures development resources for the FT comments Our Podcast is Made Possible By… If you enjoy our show, please know that it’s only possible with the generous support of our sponsor: Higher Logic. Big Quotes “[Having a strict paywall] means that we don’t really have a major troll problem. We don’t have a lot of comments that are spamming or going in to wreak havoc or distract people consciously. … That means that some of these issues that a lot of news organizations, with more open paywalls or no paywalls, have are things we don’t have to worry about. But it does mean that, yes, we have fewer comments, and it means that we have different issues that we’re facing around contentious topics than a news organization that doesn’t have such a high barrier to participate.” -@lilahrap “You [have] a commenter who has commented very thoughtfully on a number of topics, but about the European migration crisis, they leave a comment that could be considered Islamaphobic. It’s careful in its wording, but clearly prejudiced, or maybe a questionable interpretation of the facts. It gets a hundred likes. If you delete it as a moderator, you lose the opportunity for someone to respond and have a conversation happen that could actually build empathy and develop these opinions. I’ve seen it happen before in our comments. You delete the comment and the opportunity is gone. The person, and all those who agree with them, continue on unchallenged and convinced of media bias. But if you don’t delete it, and the conversation doesn’t happen, that comment thread could make a Muslim reader feel unwelcome on our pages, and not willing to participate, in a place where otherwise, if it felt more open to that point of view, might. I don’t want that either.” -@lilahrap “We have this robust community of commenters on-site. Even though a very small percentage of our readers comment, like most news sites, a surprising, shockingly large percentage of them read the comments. That’s important to us, because these people are our most loyal and engaged subscribers. We care about growing that community, because they’re in our sphere. They’re on our site, they’re having conversations based on our guidelines. It’s a space where they can interact with our journalists. We don’t want to lose them to off-site platforms, which are often thinking quite commercially about creating an experience that’s addictive.” -@lilahrap About Lilah Raptopoulos Lilah Raptopoulos is the community manager at the Financial Times, where she is responsible for reader comments and all other forms of on-site reader participation. Lilah has had a penchant for community journalism since college, where she developed a self-designed major called New Media Studies to explore how new technology has changed the way people interact with each other and their news. After two years in finance, she joined NYU’s Studio 20 masters program in journalism, where, under media critics Jay Rosen and Clay Shirky, she focused on how journalists can use their community of readers as a resource. Lilah worked at The Guardian on a number of community journalism stories and projects, including the British Journalism Award-winning Keep it in the Ground environmental campaign. In 2015, she reported from Greece on the human side of their financial crisis. She has been published in the FT, The Guardian, Public Radio International, Quartz, BuzzFeed News and Fusion. Questions 1. Hi ladies!! I am moving to Arizona this fall and would love some good atmospheric books about the desert. I am open to reading fiction (any genre), YA, or non-fiction. Bonus points for women authors! Thank you! --Erika 2. I recently read Daughter of the Pirate King, and it got me in the mood for other books featuring tough ladies on ships. I'm going to the Outer Banks in the end of July, so I'm looking for some books like this to take with me. Similar books I've read and enjoyed are Magonia, Passenger, The Girl From Everywhere, and Ahab's Wife. I'm open to all genres, but I'd prefer YA. Thanks so much! --Heather 3. Hi there, Amanda and Jenn, I am looking for a book for my brother-in-law for his birthday. I usually get him non-fiction social psychology books like Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely, Freakonomics, or anything by Malcolm Gladwell, which he really enjoys. After many years, though, I think my gifts might be a little too easy to foresee. Could you please recommend any works of fiction that would complement this type of book? I appreciate your help! Thanks, --Alicia 4. Hi! I enjoy the show! Your recommendations for others have helped me in two ways by adding to my tbr list or eliminating books I've heard of, but now know wouldn't be for me. That's a huge timesaver when considering all the books I want to read! I'm a devotee of Agatha Christie and Dickens, but I struggle to find a plentiful supply of well-written nonfiction on areas of my interest - Christian history, theology, religious practice, monasticism, apologetics, and biography. I recently read Rod Dreher's book, The Benedict Option. I really enjoyed his writing style and the subject was fascinating! If this helps, I've also read and reread these authors: Karen Armstrong, Timothy Keller, Huston Smith, C.S. Lewis, and, specifically Eric Metaxas's biography on Bonhoeffer. When I ask for suggestions from booksellers I'm often directed to authors (Joel Osteen, Joyce Meyer, Beth Moore, etc.) who, while well-intentioned, aren't my cup of tea. I need something meatier. I prefer an educated author and/or one who engages in scholarly research. I'd be so pleased to hear your recommendations and I thank you, in advance! --Tammy from Virginia 5. Hello! Do you have any recommendations for non-fiction (ideally narrative non-fiction) focused on England or Europe during the early 19th century? I'm not looking for a detailed description of the Napoleonic wars or the War of 1812, but something that touches on the effect those wars had on society would be fascinating. I've been reading and re-reading Jane Austen and contemporaries for years, and realized that what I know about the period comes mostly from fiction and those Lucy Worsley docu-shows made by the BBC. I already have "What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew" on my list, but other books covering similar topics would be great! Many thanks! --Allie 6. Hi! I am just getting into reading romance novels and for the most part I'm enjoying them more than I thought I would. There is just always one stumbling block for me - I hate the getting together part. Meet-cutes are nice and all but the awkward encounters, boundaries to being together, or denying feelings I just can't stand. Do you have any recommendations for books that start with an established relationship? I'm not sure if this makes it harder but I love poly or queer relationships as opposed to the typical cishet couple. I do not mind if the book contains smut or kink. -Katrina 7. Hi, All - I'm working through Book Riot's 2017 Read Harder challenge. I'm planning to complete the requirements by reading only books written by women. I was wondering if you would be able to give suggestions for these requirements: A non-fiction book about technology and Read a collection of poetry in translation on a theme other than love Both of these requirements are far outside my normal reading choices. Thanks! 8. Hi! Recently, one of my cousins has been posting a lot of misinformed and Islamaphobic memes of "oppressed" Muslim women. She is trying to claim that she is "so grateful for women's rights". While I know that a burqa is no more oppressive than a bikini, I don't know enough about Islam and Muslim culture in the Middle East (my cousin conveniently forgets that Muslims live literally everywhere else as well) to respond with more than anecdotes. Do you know of any books that critique the western perception of women's rights in the Middle East? #OwnVoices is definitely preferred. At the height of the election season last September, Hillary Clinton called Donald Trump’s supporters a “basket of deplorables.” “We are living in a volatile political environment," she said. "You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic — you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people — now 11 million.” The comments spread like wildfire. The next day, Clinton walked them back, noting that she had been “grossly generalistic” and she regretted saying “half.” Yet the sentiment behind the statement is true: a new movement of white nationalists is growing. Kai Wright takes a look at the so-called “basket of deplorables” and the alt-right movement that has emerged in recent years, from neo-Nazis to people fighting in the so-called “war on men.” He also chats with Manoush Zomorodi and Kat Aaron from Note to Self about how white supremacists are arming themselves online. “The goal is just chaos. The goal is to shut down civic discourse, to make spaces where people are discussing important topics just so toxic that most people shut down,” said Aaron. The theme for this podcast is deafening silence. There has been a plethora of unpleasant news the past few weeks but many of us have been silent. It is said that silence is golden but not in these instances. Tune in to hear about how the world has been silent about the innocent Syrian children being continuously bombed, the devastation from the Baton Rouge floods, the corporate greed from American insurance companies, the systemic racism and its continuous occurrence in Baltimore and North Carolina, the horrific Islamaphobic incidences in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Queens, NY. All these situations begs the questions of why have we been silent? What can we do to help these people? And why we cannot be silent anymore. Our silence to these tragic situations has been deafening. In order to change this we MUST say something, we must get involved. WE CANNOT BE SILENT ANYMORE.

The term "Paki" rose to prominence in the 1960s, white britons threatened by the arrival of south asian migrants to the UK used the term as a violent slur. Physical violence would often occur throughout the 60s,70s, 80s and 90s and these attacks would often be termed as "Paki bashing." Despite this being a significant part of the experience of many from south asia when first arriving to Britain, its cultural legacy has never been fully captured or grasped by mainstream media, film or the arts in general. Any reference to "Paki bashing" is resigned to a footnote as seen in the film "This is England" told from a young white skinheads perspective. Today, the term is still used widely as Islamaphobic rhetoric reinforces the idea of an "extremist," child grooming Muslim being someone brown skinned and bearded. The purpose of the panel is to chart the terms historical origins and its usage today and examine the ways in which it has changed. After the panel we hope to have a session of questions, comments & discussion. The panel was as follows: Coco Khan (Culture Editor at Complex UK) Suresh Grover (Director of The Monitoring Group) Amit Singh (Co-Founder of Consented) Ash Sarkar (Novara Media)
