In this episode, we dive deep into the five kleshas—the subtle forces described in the Yoga Sutras that keep us caught in cycles of suffering. Together, we'll explore how avidya (ignorance), asmita (false identity), raga (attachment), dvesha (aversion), and abhinivesha (fear of death) show up in our everyday lives, often without us even realizing it. By bringing these patterns into the light of awareness, we open the door to healing, liberation, and a deeper connection to our true Self.In this episode, you'll learn:What each of the five kleshas means and how they manifest in our livesHow avidya serves as the root of all sufferingWhy our attachments and aversions are tied to deeper misperceptionsHow the fear of death (abhinivesha) influences our choices more than we thinkPractical reflections on how to begin dissolving the kleshas through yoga and mindfulnessWhether you're new to yogic philosophy or looking to deepen your personal practice, this episode will offer powerful insights into the obstacles we all face—and the freedom that lies beyond them.Opening Music: Daniel Michael

In this episode of The Kriya Yoga Podcast, we explore the power of Kriya Yoga. The Power of Kriya Yoga: An Exploration of Self-Realization and Transcendence Kriya Yoga is a profound spiritual discipline that seeks to bridge the gap between the human experience and transcendence. This podcast delves into the reflections shared in a comprehensive lecture on the power of Kriya Yoga, touching on its transformative potential, philosophical underpinnings, and practical applications. Through the lens of a teacher's journey and insights, we explore the essence of this ancient practice. A Journey of Discovery Ryan recounts his initial encounter with Kriya Yoga, stemming from a deep yearning for spiritual clarity and understanding. Raised in a Christian tradition that did not fully satisfy his spiritual curiosity, he discovered the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda through the seminal work Autobiography of a Yogi. This exposure ignited a quest for enlightenment, leading to years of dedicated practice and mentorship under Roy Eugene Davis, a direct disciple of Yogananda. The transformative journey into Kriya Yoga begins with the premise that life is more than a physical or intellectual endeavor—it is a spiritual progression. Kriya Yoga offers a structured, "scientific" approach to transcendence, emphasizing direct experience over abstract philosophy. Philosophy and Practice Kriya Yoga is rooted in ancient Indian spiritual traditions, particularly the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the Bhagavad Gita. Its philosophy underscores the alignment of mental, emotional, and psychological harmony as prerequisites for spiritual maturity. This discipline demands adherence to ethical principles (Yamas and Niyamas) and consistent meditative practice to unveil higher states of consciousness. Central to the practice is the idea of directing energy within the body along the spinal pathway, engaging chakras (energy centers) to achieve self-realization. By transcending the limitations of the root chakra—associated with basic survival instincts—practitioners progress through higher centers, unlocking creativity, love, wisdom, and eventually mystical insight. Mr. Kurczak emphasizes the role of action (Kriya) in this process. Transformation occurs through effort and discipline, aligning one's life with spiritual principles and fostering emotional and psychological balance. The Mystical Unknowing One of the most profound aspects of Kriya Yoga is its ability to guide practitioners into a state of "mystical unknowing." Rather than offering definitive answers, it cultivates faith and acceptance of the unknown. This "faith" is not a blind adherence but a trust born from direct experiences of spiritual support and coherence. Life's challenges are reframed as opportunities for growth, providing clarity and resilience through adversity. Ryan recounts moments of doubt and despair, only to find that persistent practice reveals the intelligence underlying life's difficulties. Meditation and philosophical study serve as tools to decode these challenges, aligning the practitioner's actions and choices with a higher purpose. The Human Journey Kriya Yoga positions human life as a bridge between primal instincts and divine transcendence. Drawing on the metaphor of the chakras, it describes the evolutionary journey from survival (root chakra) to spiritual illumination (crown chakra). This progression mirrors the transformation of unconscious living to a state of enlightened awareness. The speaker highlights the importance of personal growth as a foundation for spiritual advancement. Emotional and psychological maturity, cultivated through introspection and therapeutic practices, lays the groundwork for deeper meditation. This interplay between inner harmony and spiritual practice reflects the integrative nature of Kriya Yoga. Practical Implications Kriya Yoga's teachings extend beyond the meditation cushion. The discipline advocates for a life of integrity, authenticity, and alignment with universal truths. Practitioners are encouraged to live in harmony with the world, adopting sustainable practices, cultivating meaningful relationships, and embodying principles of truth and nonviolence. Moreover, the speaker underscores the importance of personal effort and commitment. Spiritual progress is not a passive journey but one that requires active engagement with life's challenges and a willingness to let go of outdated beliefs and habits. Conclusion Kriya Yoga offers a path to transcendence through a blend of philosophy, meditation, and ethical living. Its transformative power lies in its ability to harmonize the mind, body, and spirit, guiding practitioners toward direct experiences of the divine. As the speaker concludes, life itself becomes a form of divine communion, where every experience—joyful or painful—serves as a teacher. The ultimate goal is to realize the innate coherence of existence and to embody a state of enlightened awareness. This podcast encapsulates the essence of Kriya Yoga as not merely a practice but a profound way of being, offering a roadmap to spiritual self-discovery and the realization of life's deeper purpose. - If you would like to participate in future live sessions consider becoming a member of The Kriya Yoga Online Patreon Community or applying to the Kriya Yoga Apprenticeship Program. Unravel The Thread: Living the Yoga Sutra today

PRESENTThere are countless approaches to living our lives. It is safe to say that most people are in a constant process of refining their approach. They try different things to feel more alive and engaged in their lives. There are many systems and methods; on this podcast, we have been exploring a non-dogmatic, contemporary approach to the teachings in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali for several years. The goal is always the same: to improve the quality of our participation in the moment we are in, right here and now. One motivation that can be useful is to recognize some simple facts.  First, there is only one chance to be in this moment. This moment will not be repeated, and it will not happen again. If that is not motivation enough, would it help to remember the second fact? That this moment is the most important moment of our lives. Everything in our lives (including successes, boring moments, challenges, and failures) has brought us to this moment. Moreover, the actions we take in this moment will influence how the rest of our lives will unfold. The third fact is that this moment is the result of the elegant synchronicity of thousands of events that make this moment to be exactly as it is. The fourth fact is that each moment is a gift, new, unique, offering us many choices. Each one of us decides how we want to participate. In today's practice is I invite you to ask yourself, "Is this the most important moment of my life?"Practice whenever you can. Become familiar with each technique and its effects. Remember, don't strain, don't struggle and don't judge yourself, I know that you are trying your best! What happens when you try to ask yourself this question during your day?

Recuerda no forzar, no forcejear y, no auto juzgarte. ¡Sé que estás haciendo tu mejor esfuerzo!¿Qué ocurre cuando intentas hacerte esta pregunta a lo largo del día? Tengo curiosidad por saber qué descubres. I have been studying, practicing and teaching yoga for over 20 years because it works. For me, yoga is the most complete and effective system for cultivating presence and living a meaningful life. (I am aware that there are other systems out there, but yoga is the one that has worked best for me). Experiencing the benefits of yoga personally is what inspires, motivates and energizes me to dedicate my life to making yoga available for the benefit of others.I started the podcast as a way to share simple and useful ways to understand and, more importantly, apply the wisdom of yoga to everyday life. I was humbled to know that many people have found the podcast useful in their lives. When I finished exploring all of the Yoga Sutras in 201 episodes of the podcast, I thought I might stop creating the podcast. However, in listening to my students and other people in my life, I realized that many of us could use some guidance, encouragement, and support on our journey to feeling healthier, happier, and more balanced. I tried to take a more practical approach in the following 50 episodes of the podcast. As I mentioned before, I look to my students and all the people around me as my teachers to help me decide how to focus my energy to be of service. Again, I have heard people express the challenge of maintaining a consistent practice. Last year, I learned about this newer platform, Substack, as a robust platform where I can share articles, audio and video in one place in a way that is easier for people to navigate, and after subscribing to some of the writers on the platform, I am inspired to offer more ways for people to practice a simple, effective and enjoyable form of yoga more regularly. This is in addition to practicing yoga daily, teaching yoga classes, meeting with students privately, and continuing my own study of yoga. Yes, it is a lot of work. Tu apoyo a Simple Yoga y Desenreda el Hilo contribuye a tres niveles: En primer lugar, me ayudas a seguir aprendiendo, creciendo y compartiendo. This episode of The Kriya Yoga Podcast, we explore the necessity of focus. Key Points: Focus and Intentionality in Spiritual Practice: Ryan Kurczak emphasizes that achieving spiritual goals requires focus on actions aligned with those goals and letting go of distractions. Yoga's Definition in the Sutras: He references Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, particularly the idea that yoga is about ceasing fluctuations of the mind, allowing connection with the eternal self or "Purusha." Concentration as a Core Skill: Spiritual practice demands developing concentration, a skill that enables one to transcend life's constant changes and achieve inner peace. Example of the Sleepless Saint: Kurczak draws on "Autobiography of a Yogi" where the Sleepless Saint describes the extensive meditation required for enlightenment, showing that dedication over decades fosters deep spiritual insight. Realistic Spiritual Growth: Although intense practice can lead to enlightenment, Kurczak underscores that small, regular meditation also brings significant progress, reducing the fear of death and afterlife anxieties. Stages of Conscious Growth: Early life experiences, shaped by past karma, lead to conscious awareness, ultimately allowing adults to make mindful choices towards spiritual maturity. Ego and Identity: Moving beyond personal ego is crucial, as spiritual progress involves letting go of individual identity in favor of unity with the larger self. Long-Term Commitment: Spiritual growth is rooted in consistent, uninterrupted practice over many years, coupled with respect and devotion, a point supported by both the Sleepless Saint's example and the Yoga Sutras. Patience and Allowing Natural Progression: Rather than forcing intense experiences, one should allow spiritual progress to unfold naturally, letting each stage build a solid foundation for the next. Universal Spiritual Lessons: Finally, Kurczak emphasizes that all spiritual work, even minimal, contributes to clarity, inner peace, and alignment with one's spiritual aspirations. These points underscore the significance of patience, self-awareness, and dedication in spiritual practice, offering guidance for practitioners at any stage of their journey. - If you would like to participate in future live sessions consider becoming a member of The Kriya Yoga Online Patreon Community or applying to the Kriya Yoga Apprenticeship Program. One could easily spend a lifetime exploring Vedic literature and still barely scratch the surface in terms of the wisdom that's available to us. Between the four Vedas, Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Atharva Veda and Yajur Veda, the Upanishads, the Brahma Sutras, the six schools of Vedic philosophy, and countless other written and oral texts or translations, there's no shortage of avenues to explore. And even if you could absorb them all in a lifetime, you'd probably need to reread them to understand them from a more evolved point of view.  Fortunately, the Vedic worldview is that all this wisdom is experiential, and we can shortcut the process of attaining wisdom through “knowledge of the Knower.” Thom provides an example of this in this assessment of Patanjali's Eight Limbs of Yoga, a subset of The Yoga Sutras. Thom clarifies that the piecemeal approach of trying to check off the eight limbs through our actions in order to attain the state of Yoga, is a misguided approach to take, and that practicing Vedic Meditation provides an express route that accelerates our personal evolution.Episode Highlights:[00:45] The Yoga Sutras[02:36] Ashta Anga[03:44] Yoga - Unification[06:27] Samadhi[07:39] The Simultaneous Arrival of Balance[09:57] 1. The aim of all practices is to hear The Sound, because even just listening for this ringing Sound, even if you can't hear It, what do you hear? ... ... Not thoughts. When you just stop and try to see if you can hear the Sound of all sounds.  the Sound that sounds come from, you're not thinking, which means you're not afraid. You're no longer afraid, and light will shine on the road ahead of you. You will succeed at what you have chosen to do, because He chose it for you. He's doing it through you. It is done. It was finished before you started. It's already here. HEAR. If people are in trouble and you say, ‘Help them,' God will save them.: - Job 22:28-29 "And I assure you that the time is coming, indeed it's here now, when the dead will hear my voice—the voice of the Son of God. And those who listen will live." - John 5:25 "Patanjali declares in the Yoga Sutras that the manifesting symbol for God is Om, nadam, supreme music. According to the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the Supreme yogic state is achieved when the nadam or cosmic sound can be heard. The aim of all Hatha Yoga practices is to hear this sound. The practices of yoga should result in a sound body and a sound mind. The true meaning of this goes far beyond the usual understanding of physical and mental health. A truly sound body and mind is tuned to the cosmic vibration. In verse 100 of the fourth chapter in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika we find this sutra: "When one hears the nadam, the quintessence of which is the supreme, the mind then becomes one with that supreme object and is dissolved in it. The ability to listen is essential for God-realization." - Shannon Gannon "You must try to pray so that, in your prayer, you open yourself in such a way that sometime--perhaps not today, but sometime-you are able to hear God say to you, " love you!" These words, addressed to you by God, are the most important words you will ever hear because, before you hear them, nothing is ever completely right with you, but after you hear them, something will be right in your life at a very deep level." -Ronald Rolheiser "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." -2 Timothy 1:7
