Jen Berkova (with her band) and the Shed Sessions team have literally gone underground for this underground music podcast. The show was recorded with an audience in Curio Bookshop, Oxford - an underground vault/bookshop in the heart of the city. The music and conversation has been lifted by the people in the room. The evening was filled with love, community, friendship and family. Warmly embraced by Jen's extraordinary voice and the rhythmic mastery of her band. It was a dream being there and now you can hear it too, thanks to Harry's inspired audio set up , recording and mixing. Thank you for listening. Warren and the Shed Sessions crew (Logan, Stefano, Ian De Quadros, Ian and Andy) wrap up another year of Shed Sessions with a chat in The Slow & Steady pub. The conversation navigates the staff Christmas party, visual and audio mastery, guinea pig guest stars, favourite moments and the odd mishap. It's a delightful peak behind the scenes where we learn more about the amazing people who carry the extraordinary music from the instruments, through the speakers and into our ears. We too find out about the photography and videography that brings the music even closer to our hearts. Thank you for listening.
The the cold air traps a layer of fog over the valley creating an impenetrable blanket of grey. As the songs rise into the sky, the natural barrier shifts and a star glistens through the parting, light years away.Warren and the crew are joined by Eva Gadd for a magnificent moment in time. Eva performs her beautiful songs on a grand piano in Sunnybrook Studio. We are mesmerised as the glorious sounds from the piano and her soulful voice meld in the air around us, nourishing the feelings of joy and wonder which have been brought into the room. The conversation is gently woven between the songs. We are treated to talk about Eva's latest collaboration work with the incredible jazztronic London duo - Blue Lab Beats. We too learn of a groundbreaking EP, piano inspiration, album artwork as well as the artists who she admires most. The yellow lights from within Common Ground illuminate the silken webs on the parking information signs. The painter to the right of the doorway captures the low winter sunlight reflecting from the Duke's windows across the street. He pulls the auburn shades across his canvas with an old brush. Lavi, David, Hannah, Mikey and Luke are setting up below ground in Curio Bookshop. Spring Major join Warren and the crew for an evening of exquisite stripped back recordings from their smashing catalogue. The conversation rolls from ghosts in Swindon to a Beano Indie Music Quiz and backwards moves in chess. The band share a new song exclusively for us on Shed Sessions. Thank you for listening. The books in the underground vault beckon us down the stairs; a billion words lift from the pages swirling through the cool air, inspiring artistry within its steel walls. Shed Sessions welcomes Moogieman and Stefano into the Curio Bookshop for this extraordinary electronic expedition of music and conversation. The low sun spreads its dimming rays across the tops of the Poplars. A narrow brush stroke of glowing yellow light touches the remaining leaves. The streams feeding the Thames have topped their banks, pooling in the fields beyond Sunnybrook studio. Paul Lodge joins Warren on this crisp sunny afternoon in the countryside. James from Pet Twin joins Warren in his apple tree. There they perch together like a pair of bird buddies as the sun gently dips behind the tallest branches. The dark green oblong leaves dapple the yellow sun beams across its guests, further enchanting the space. The shed may be gone but Warren continues to form environments where artists can create their most unique and finest pieces. The dark blue waters swell, obscuring the horizon. The boards peak and point to the vast ocean and beyond to where the sky once again meets the sea. The next wave allows its top to gently push forward revealing a crest like the wisp of cloud above. Jonny, Mark, George and James deliver us graciously ashore where we land on the smooth sand, look up towards the dunes and taste the salt on our lips. Alto Alto is the 41st band to share their creations and conversation with Warren in the shed and the 135th recording in the now mythical space. There could have been no better way to celebrate the taking of Shed Sessions to the waves than with this ensemble of phenomenal musicians. Thank you for listening. Beard Of Destiny join Warren in the shed on a rainy Summer evening. The water droplets join up and rush over the leaf tips from where they waterfall onto the parched soil below. Ian and Gray create music which mingles effortlessly with the song of the blackbird high up in the wetted Elderflower canopy above. Warren and the band explore the art of songwriting, the versatility of the cajon, guitar collections, the beauty of imperfections and some rather fantastic storytelling. Thank you for listening. Warren and the crew welcome In-Flight Movie into the Curio Bookshop for the very first Shed Sessions recording in the vaults. It is no longer a bank safe, but rather a delightful bookshop beneath what was once the lobby area of a High Street bank. Replacing the once musty banking area on ground level is a fresh purpose-driven social co-working café and community arts space in the heart of Oxford. Warren, Stefano, Logan, Andy and Nick are very happy to be there with this extraordinary band who are James, Simon and Pete. The inaugural recording fuels the transformation to a different kind of wealth, that charged by love through music, art and literature. Warren and the band ease into the session with the finest stripped back electronic music, carefully arranged for the session. It's the tonic needed as the team venture into new realms with Shed Sessions. Greet your listening mode and escape with music and conversation to guide you into the warm embrace of your safe place. A slender fox sits under the white light cast from an LED street lamp. The mysterious creature's dark shadow is duplicated on all sides like a dark crown, spray painted onto the silver tarmac around its body. The song ends and Warren opens his eyes. Josh, Joel, Charlie and Dan are in the shed performing stripped back versions from a selection of their wondrous creations. There's chat about U2, favourite first albums, second takes and the band demonstrate their music quiz prowess. Thank you for listening.
The Elder are in flower. The sun casts a golden hue over clusters of white petals. White-gold bouquets dabbed across the green canvas. Nestled between the wall of trees at the back and the gathering of raspberry stems at the front lies the sanctuary of the shed. Inside, Lucy and Arun of 'Girl Like That' perform a collection of stripped back songs from the brilliant new album - Medicine Box. Lucy's voice is superb and rides majestically upon the magical sounds gliding from Arun's guitar (well Lucy's). There's also a sneaky foray into Wheatus' Teenage Dirtbag. The conversation includes sage advice, stories of musical inspiration, album crafting insights, TRUCK festival 2024 news and Taylor Swift. It's a time of abundance as the raspberry plants reach for the shed doors and the buttercups and dandelions spring forth from the uncut lawn. Momo, Will and Greg guide the joys of the season into the shed and play music from an oasis somewhere deep inside our solar system. Warren is a vessel for this magic and the band gracefully share insight, inspiration, laughter, friendship and exceptional music. We also discover what's inside their time capsules. The Northern Lights arrived as far south as the River Thames and left me with a sense of awe and mystery. The song birds have laid foundations for their nests in the hedgerows and the suburban garden is alive with the joys of Spring. The beautiful notes of Max Blansjaar's music find every corner of the shed like a mist on the water as it floats gently into the reeds, up and over the banks and onto the footpath. From there the glorious sounds lift high into the still golden syrup skies, kindly calling in the Nightjar. Max Blansjaar performs three songs from his forthcoming masterpiece, False Comforts. In this episode we get the front row on a magical floating rug ride upon which we stretch out to enjoy the music and conversation. False Comforts will be released on 21 June 2024. The setting sun takes with her the warm golden rays from the shed doors like a thousand retreating ornamental metal spears. The cradling crescent moon is later pinned above the semi detached houses half way up the cold hazy ink blue western skies. While nature quietly transforms for her next scene, Izzie's beautiful songs merge with the changes outside as Nick's splendid double bass coaxes the night time in. Magical, mystical, beguiling, haunting, brilliant. The conversation leads us on a path via the cuteness of guinea pigs, early music revelations, Bob Dylan, the resonance of bass, lion calls, the west country and making music. Thank you for listening. Warren welcomes Simon, Tom and Alfie from the incredible Killer Kowalski into the shed to kick off Season 14. Sadly there wasn't enough space for the full band so Howard could't join them this time. The band sounds amazing as they try out the stripped back acoustic arrangements for the very first time. It's an early Spring evening, the blossom petals are drifting about and Warren thinks he's been in the Upside Down! Along with the sublime music, there's cracking conversation about thought provoking lyrics, the performance, All Bar One, Truck Festival, forming a band in what we think is the modern age, Lady Gaga and more. Another great episode and Killer Kowalski are brilliant! Thank you for listening. Warren is joined in the shed by Aris and Francesco from Mount St. Helen. They are stripped back, leaving Ryan (drums) and Dan (bass) with the sound knowledge that they are carrying the flame proudly over to the shed for this exclusive performance and conversation. The music is otherworldly and the lyrics are lovingly carried by Aris' dreamy voice and the ethereal sounds of the pair's Stratocasters. We are gently guided into the story of a band with a bigger picture as they seamlessly glide above the great expanses of the Pacific Northwest dusting the top of the volcanic Mount St. Helens as we swoop past. There's talk of old heroes, frog faces, second hand guitar treasures, making music videos and the most extraordinary music extending its velvety condor wings wide, gathering us all together. The Deadbeat Apostles grace the floorboards of the shed in a stripped back, acoustic form. Their soulful groove very much in force and ready to be shared with us all. The session is filled with love, sandwiches, crisps, New York, Bowie, Lennon, first plays, Will Young on wash up duties and an excessive music quiz. This is a history of the Deadbeats, where they've been, where they are now and what lies ahead. A beautiful journey to be a friend of the Deadbeats! Warren welcomes James and Tim into the shed for a stripped back KANADIA set. The pair are soaring with the thermals and gazing across the boggy fields and enchanted woodlands, mapping the route as we float along with them. Enveloped in pure bliss. A field mouse peaks out from the leaf litter as the notes are set free into the star spangled night skies over the Oxfordshire countryside. This band is formidable and have chosen their own dreamy path to navigate the spaces with soulful atmospheric alternative rock music. Warren draws us all in with his curiosity and lands our boat on enchanted beaches for an evening full of intrigue, laughter, soul searching and gratitude. KANADIA's performance is phenomenal. They are firmly on my list of favourite bands. You can find out more about the band here: https://www.kanadia.band/ Thank you for listening.
Welcome back to the first episode of 2024. For this special occassion we recorded a Shed Session in front of an audience at The Bullingdon Cocktail Bar in Oxford with the incredibly talented Joely June. Warren guided us gently through this magical land of music and conversation. It was love from the very first chord as Joely, Evie and Phil reached out and let us peek into the mysteries of the soul. "Thanks for a lovely evening my man and well done on a great show. It was particularly powerful for me to see how everyone was sitting quietly and attentively listening - like audiences would do in the Greenwich village coffee houses in the 60s. Put everyone in a reflective and receptive mood. Quite a gift to bring stillness and focus to people as well as music so well done you
The rain spills from shed the roof directly onto the gravel; it coats the windows with an opaque slick that looks like the glass is melting. The droplets get heavier at intervals and shake the remaining raspberry leaves this way and that, like a dancer under strobe lights. Water streams down the leaf tips and pierce deep holes into the mud below. The sounds from outside beckon to join with the music ERIKA is creating inside. This is a stunning performance and the conversation is filled with honesty, love and curiosity. A wonderful last episode of 2023. Thank you for listening. "Independent artist and music maker ERIKA emerged from a life coloured by the musical corners of UK and Japan. Crafting beautiful and innovative pop, the mood can switch from haunting to joyous and from hope to despair from verse to verse"(bandcamp). Dolly, Bee and Ruth visited last week and performed some of their songs acoustically for us. Their enchanting creations are now infused within the fabric of the shed alongside the craftings of the bands who have shared this intriguing space before them. As the air outside begins to turn icy, The Bobo find themselves in the warmth of the shed nearly a year since their last Winter visit. They now have new band mates, a recording session in Maida Vale 4, a captivating TRUCK festival performance; a new knockout EP; a live performance on TV and a new album forming as well as a handful of Oxford shows. There is mystery and beauty in the music this band make. There too is a generous serving of creativity, honesty and love in what they do. The rains have come and the stepping stones are small islands on the way to the sanctuary of the shed at the end of the garden. Lavinia's songs weave an harmonious embrace around the wet and cold as Warren drifts off, spellbound. We find out more about the treasure of an album that is Komorebi. Ian and Warren realised that they haven't had a chat in a while because they're always busy doing Shed Sessions with bands. So they got together and enjoyed a much needed conversation about supermarkets, music, our favourite Shed Sessions moments, “What's in My Bag” recommendations and of course the weather. You can listen to their reflections in the new bonus podcast episode via the link in the bio. Thank you all for your support, it enriches local music.
Pick up a pair of Snakeskin Cowboy boots from the Trading Post store. Jump into a dusty faded blue 50s Chevy truck and take a long cruise through the California deserts. Drive along the lonely highway and stop in at a motel with a swimming pool, palm trees and scorpions. There's a band playing out back. The hot wind picks up and swirls dirt around Sarah's keyboard as the notes skate along the mirage beyond the palms. Matt's tremolo shifts and bends time as the crows nod casually from their perch on the frayed power lines above. This is the landscape painted by the brilliant Crandle. Sarah's voice is dreamy and Matt's guitar captures a time gone by. Their creative union makes for a beautiful session. Ian has captured the purest of sounds for you to enjoy on your very own magical journey. "These are the days of miracle and wonder; This is the long distance call" (Paul Simon, the boy in the bubble). Thank you for listening. Ripper circles high above the shed. The tip of her right wing is torn but this doesn't affect the majesty of her high level soaring. She shares the same airspace with another two Red Kites. Beautiful melodies flow out of the open windows and up into the cool evening air. The spellbinding sounds mingle with the birds as they mock the airplanes with their natural mastery of flight above the Thames Valley, Oxford city and the suburbs. Warren is lifted up high with Brian, Jon and Oli as they play three songs from their eagerly anticipated new album as well as two more along with delightful conversation. A joyous gathering somewhere between the earth and the sky. Here we are at home with one of Oxford's finest bands. Their new album Dig The Mountain! is out on 6 October 2023. In this session we hear the the most amazing voice and guitar playing by Jack Cade. The storytelling moves between the songs like a low mist twisting and climbing between Oxford's spires on a late summer morning. The sun burns away the suspended droplets of water and reveals a clear, hot day. Jack is on his way from Brighton and listening to music as he drives. He arrives at the shed and is ready to share a very special evening with Warren and Ian. As the sun sets, the blues and indigoes wash the sky and we can't quite believe this has all happened. Sam and Zin from newly fledged Oxford band Suspire grace the shed with brilliance! Their stripped back performance will have band mates Emily and Albi fill up with joy for knowing that they are in a band with them and creating music together. The conversations guide us into the most stunning and arresting performances that will no doubt stay with you beyond this recording. I've been singing along loudly since! Warren welcomes freshly formed Yellow County into his home. The trio carry the Catgod torch across green fields and into the Shed at the end of the garden. The musical performances coming from this cozy, inspiring space continue to amaze us. The sounds are expertly recorded and mixed by Tiger Mendonza and Warren guides us into unchartered waters with his honest and enthusiastic hosting as well as a truly inexhaustible love for music. Cat, Paddy and George release exquisite notes up into the brooding english Summer skies where they twist and mingle with the birds then elegantly sway and turn, evading the warm heavy raindrops, upon their return to the damp ground below. They are the loveliest people and with their awe inspiring musical talent and genuine conversation, we are carried above the patchy clouds and the dreaming spires of Oxford. Thank you for listening. Warren hosts Page of Swords, the solo project by Ian Mitchell of the formidable Barrelhaus. Warren, freshly inspired by a train journey in and out of the heart of London, feels that the same forces at play for Nick Cave have brought Page of Swords into the shed for a cosmic evening of music and conversation. We learn about Ian's work ethic, his new Hummingbird Dreadnought as well as Warren's guitar related Toy Story idea! Warren is thrilled to be joined by Pet Twin, an electronic (at times) project based in Oxford led by Juniper Nights frontman James Gallagher. Warren is joined in the shed by Lee Switzer-Woolf, an alternative artist from Reading. His superb dark indie-folk lifts you up just when you thought sad songs could only drag you down. We're rolling through the precinct, the sun lights up the grey concrete of the building site, the birdsong pierces the crushing tones of the drills. We fall, we get up, a builder says how nice it is to see us skating to school. Later in the evening, Lee shares a brilliant insight into writing, wellbeing, his home town and stunning acoustic versions of songs from two new albums (plus a preview of a brand new track!) With great pleasure Warren welcomes Cholly into the shed for a performance to transport us o'er the far peaks and into a realm of tranquility, like a round pebble bouncing along the bed of a crystal clear mountain stream. The electronic compositions meld into a futuristic talisman, greeting us with magical solutions to the day's problems. Warren chats with Chloe about her inspirations as well as her brilliant new album ‘Anomaly'. We are also treated to sublime live performances of some of the new tracks. Welcome to part 2 of Shed Sessions Unplugged at The White House. We get to hear music and conversation from The Flaming Keys in this final act of the evening. The band have created that MTV unplugged sound from the 90's. Stunning renditions of songs by Morcheeba, No Doubt, Nirvana, Skunk Anansie, Radiohead and NIN have us all losing ourselves in the musical equivalent of the Okavango Delta. Warren weaves his stories through conversations with the band and we learn about Thom Yorke's autograph, a photo opportunity with Gwen Stefani and a moment with Skin. Warren draws the evening to a close with a nod to the drum which guided us safely through these magical sessions. Thank you for listening. This is the first of two acts performed and recorded in The White House pub in Oxford, live with an audience. Tiger Mendoza (musician, producer and beat maker) along with Dan Clear on guitar share a stunning acoustic set with us. They are joined on stage by special guests, Mila Todd, Octavia Freud and Emma Hunter. The music leads Warren into his safe place. From the warm golden savannah, he reaches out with storytelling and conversation while the audience helps shape this beautiful session with their lovely presence and appreciation. Part 2 with The Flaming Keys is coming soon. Thank you for listening. The full moon, early spring, snow storms and International Women's Day 2023 have aligned for Emma Hunter. The exceptional duo that is Emma Hunter and Tom Bruce are tuned in to their surroundings and each other's creative flow like no other. The cinematic soundscapes are painted with stunning vocals, mesmerising loops, percussive drumming, intriguing narrative and inspired chat. Warren and his guests feel the warm creative glow inside the shed like they are in a cave overlooking a dark cold ocean, the light from calming yellow flames flickering against the ancient rock walls and sacred music calling out to the watery expanse beyond. Warren is thrilled to be joined in the shed by EB: producer, DJ, singer songwriter, artist and downright wonderful person. EB shares an acoustic set that captivates, resonates, soothes and delights. EB and our host have relaxed and interesting conversations sprinkled carefully like icing sugar around four exquisite songs. We get to learn about some of the new material EB is working on, DJ nights in The Library, the song writing process, the start of EB's musical journey and beer. Sit back, keep running, walking, bathing or whatever you do while listening to podcast episodes and lose yourself in another magical performance. "Be bold, be honest, be brave, be true, be kind, be loving, be you", this is EB's call to arms from "Tired" off the "Rodeo Queen EP" and this Shed Session shows us how all of that can be achieved! Thank you for listening. Warren is joined in the shed by two phenomenal artists: Maria (The Bobo) and Pete (Kid Kin). Their collaborations gently scoop you up and place you on a magic carpet ride above the rooftops and countryside, then through the clouds and smoothly back to earth somewhat changed (for the better) by the journey. Tiger Mendoza has done an exquisite job with the audio production, ensuring the music sounds as pure and as crisp as the icy cold clear night outside. Warren's shed delights his guests and once again helps bring the performance to a place filled with magic and honest conversation. Hear about the exciting music Maria and Pete are making which is due to be released in the Spring. I know Warren can't wait to hear more from one of his favourite collaborations ever! Warren is joined in the Shed by James Walker: artist, singer, songwriter and producer. It is the day after the Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and the sun is setting on the frozen Thames Valley. The birdsong heralds in the nightfall and James infuses the space with his beautifully crafted songs. Warren is in awe and makes the most of his wonderful and gracious guest who is sitting behind the piano, relaxed and ready for a truly magnificent performance. This episode is the perfect vessel to glide from Christmas and into the New Year. Thank you for listening. Photos of the Shed Sessions can be found here: @shedtreasures. Welcome to the 100th 'What's In Your Shed?' podcast episode. To mark the occasion, Warren is joined by Octavia Freud for a rich insight into creating music and being true to your art. Martin Andrews (Octavia Freud) is a DJ, musician, songwriter, composer and remixer focusing on DIY electronica. Among others, Octavia Freud plays us some incredible tracks from the new Album 'Land Ahoy' and we learn more about a creative response to the Marina Abramovic method. Martin also chats about and plays an exclusive live track from 'Mancbeth', a Shakespearean concept album. Tiger Mendoza (@tigermendoza) has done an amazing job with the audio production. Warren beams Slaven into the Shed via an internet call and they build a virtual bridge between Austria and England with the most incredible guitar music. Slaven is a musician and composer and he can shred the electric guitar like no other. We learn about his classical training and can hear how it weaves through his guitar playing. Slaven is a massive groove metal fan and Warren embraces yet another musical genre as the pair are united through the appreciation of Pantera, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Guns 'N Roses and much more. Slaven generously plays his guitar for us and we can sit back as the power of the music infuses our very souls. Slaven has a new EP coming out soon and you can explore further via Instagram: @st1.9.8.4 Thank you for listening.

As the Autumn approaches and the nights draw in, we are treated to another extraordinary Shed Session. This time it's with the extremely talented singer songwriter, Mila Todd. We are delighted with an otherworldly selection of songs. The conversation carries us into each dreamlike track. From there, Mila's voice and very special acoustic guitar guide us along West Oxford's mysterious marshy meadows as our host Warren cries tears of joy. This episode is full of the sounds of nature and wonder.
