What does it really take to build a full-time jewellery business from scratch? Notre 1er invité est le musicien, auteur-compositeur et interprète BabX, pour la sortie de son nouvel album Une maison avec un piano dedans.Né dans une famille d'artistes et de musiciens, David Babin démarre l'apprentissage du piano à l'âge de 5 ans.À la suite d'une première approche de la scène comme membre de la troupe polyphonique des « Glotte-Trotters », dirigée par Martina A. Catella, David compose sa première musique de spectacle à 17 ans pour un spectacle autour des textes de Roland Topor et intègre la compagnie de l'Herbe Tendre.Au début des années 2000, David écrit ses premières chansons, et donne ses premiers concerts. C'est à cette époque qu'il opte pour le pseudonyme BABX.BABX sort son 1er album en 2006. Dans une chronique dans le magazine Epok, Dominique A écrit au sujet de l'album : « c'est magnifique, parce que la musique (…) annule l'actualité des mots et donne le sentiment d'une histoire qui vient de loin. À suivre de près, au moins ».Dans la foulée de la sortie, l'album est nommé aux Victoires de la musique dans la catégorie « album révélation de l'année ».Deux autres événements discrets mais marquants pour l'avenir viennent ponctuer l'année 2006 : la reprise du studio Sofreson, qui devient le Studio Pigalle et sera désormais le lieu choisi par BABX et son équipe pour réaliser toutes leurs productions. Et la réalisation d'un maxi de quelques titres pour une jeune chanteuse encore inconnue, Raphaële Lannadère, qui deviendra « L ».En 2008, David et son équipe enregistrent Cristal Ballroom, second album de BABX, rêverie inspirée par l'évocation des musiciens de la salle de bal du Titanic. Notre 1er invité est le musicien, auteur-compositeur et interprète BabX, pour la sortie de son nouvel album Une maison avec un piano dedans.Né dans une famille d'artistes et de musiciens, David Babin démarre l'apprentissage du piano à l'âge de 5 ans.À la suite d'une première approche de la scène comme membre de la troupe polyphonique des « Glotte-Trotters », dirigée par Martina A. Catella, David compose sa première musique de spectacle à 17 ans pour un spectacle autour des textes de Roland Topor et intègre la compagnie de l'Herbe Tendre.Au début des années 2000, David écrit ses premières chansons, et donne ses premiers concerts. C'est à cette époque qu'il opte pour le pseudonyme BABX.BABX sort son 1er album en 2006. Dans une chronique dans le magazine Epok, Dominique A écrit au sujet de l'album : « c'est magnifique, parce que la musique (…) annule l'actualité des mots et donne le sentiment d'une histoire qui vient de loin. À suivre de près, au moins ».Dans la foulée de la sortie, l'album est nommé aux Victoires de la musique dans la catégorie « album révélation de l'année ».Deux autres événements discrets mais marquants pour l'avenir viennent ponctuer l'année 2006 : la reprise du studio Sofreson, qui devient le Studio Pigalle et sera désormais le lieu choisi par BABX et son équipe pour réaliser toutes leurs productions. Et la réalisation d'un maxi de quelques titres pour une jeune chanteuse encore inconnue, Raphaële Lannadère, qui deviendra « L ».En 2008, David et son équipe enregistrent Cristal Ballroom, second album de BABX, rêverie inspirée par l'évocation des musiciens de la salle de bal du Titanic. C'est à cette époque qu'il croise la route du légendaire guitariste de l'avant-garde new-yorkaise Marc Ribot avec qui il enregistre en duo le titre Lady L aux Studios Dubway à New York.Cet album est aussi pour Babx celui de deux rencontres importantes : l'ingénieur du son américain Oz Fritz (Tom Waits, Iggy Pop, Les Ramones, Bill Laswell…), avec qui il entame une relation durable, ainsi que le photographe Harry Gruyaert (Magnum) dont l'une des photos orne la pochette de Cristal Ballroom.Concomitamment au mix de l'album aux États-Unis avec Oz Fritz, BABX rencontre les membres du « Metropolis Ensemble » (The Roots, Deerhoof…) dirigé par le chef d'orchestre Andrew Cyr et entame une collaboration artistique avec eux.Au même moment, BABX sera nommé finaliste de l'International Songwriting Competition (dont les membres du jury sont composés notamment de Robert Smith, Tom Waits, Mc Coy Tyner, Ornette Coleman…) avec la chanson « Remington Requiem » et écrira deux chansons à Julien Doré « First Lady » et « Soirées Parisiennes » pour l'album Ersatz.2009 est également l'année où BABX renoue avec la musique de spectacle, à l'occasion de la création de « Noctiluque » de la danseuse japonaise Kaori Ito au Théâtre Vidy de Lausanne qu'il co-composera avec son proche complice le guitariste/oudiste Grégory Dargent (L'Hijaz Car, Houria Aïchi, Rachid Taha, Sirventès).En 2010, David Babin réalise et arrange deux premiers albums à succès qui l'installent comme l'un des producteurs incontournables de la scène hexagonale : celui de Camélia Jordana (pour lequel il écrit plusieurs titres) et « Initiale » de L. Le premier sera un immense succès de l'année 2010 (disque de platine, nomination aux Victoires) tandis que le second est disque d'or et unanimement considéré comme l'un des albums de l'année 2011.En 2012, BABX rejoint le saxophoniste et chanteur Thomas de Pourquery (Supersonic, Rigolus, DPZ, VKNG) pour la programmation et l'organisation du Brain Festival : un moment collectif de musique au bénéfice de la lutte contre les maladies neuro-dégénératives auquel participeront Oxmo Puccino, Jacques Higelin, André Minvielle, Poni Hoax, The Do, Camélia Jordana, L, Jeanne Added, etc.2013, 3è album intitulé Drones personnels. Cet album à la tonalité plus électronique que les précédents, évoque les expérimentations avant-gardistes de Laurie Anderson tout en restant fidèle à une forme organique. Après avoir dressé sa tente sous les étoiles pendant douze jours, il est arrivé à destination, imprégné de l'île. C'est alors qu'il s'est plongé dans le calme le plus total pour enregistrer ce nouvel opus. Cet album est un voyage à travers le deuil, l'amour et la solitude. Scottish Island Adventures - Stornoway - with host Coinneach Macleod, the Hebridean Baker and guest Cathy MacDonald Stornoway Stornoway is the main town and port on Lewis and is accessed by a ferry from Ullapool on the mainland. Roughly a third of Lewis' total population live in Stornoway and the town has many facilities such as a sports complex and golf course to service the bustling community. At Lews castle you can find a wide variety of woodland walks and in the summer months visitors are able to take boat cruises around the waters. Stornoway Black Pudding  Stornoway Black Pudding is one of the most well-loved products to come out of Lewis. Having been designated a Protected Geographical Indicator of Origin in 2013, only Black Pudding made in Stornoway can give itself that title after a rise in ‘imposter' Stornoway Black Puddings started putting farmers in Lewis out of business. Most of the black puddings only use beef suet, oatmeal, onion, blood, salt and pepper which gives it a unique flavour.  Museum Nan Eilean Museum Nan Eilean can be found on the Lews Castle Grounds and is dedicated to the history and community of Lewis. There are three permanent exhibitions: Dùthchas (A Sense of Place, Eileanaich (The Islanders), and Blas nan Eilean (A Taste of the Islands). Entry to the museum is open all year round and is based on donations.  Ishga Seaweed  Ishga, taking its name from the Gaelic for water, is an award-winning luxury skincare brand.  Four types of Hebridean seaweed are harvested for use in a wide variety of products with Hebridean Seaweed used specifically for its vitamins, bio-active minerals, and natural antioxidant properties.  Thank you for listening to the Caledonian MacBrayne podcast. With a visitors site/lodgings, cafe serving fresh food and located a stone's throw from the Callanish Standing Stones, Gearrannan Blackhouse has easily earned its place among the top attractions on Lewis.  Wild Swimming The benefits of wild swimming are bountiful and well-documented with more and more people taking taking advantage of stunning waters of the Atlantic ocean, networks like the Hebridean Sea Swimmers allow people of all abilities to discover the joys of the open water ‘whether they want to swim for 5 minutes or 5 miles'.  Uig Sands Restaurant With a stunning vista of Uig beach and mouth watering dishes like Hebridean sea chowder with seaweed butter on the menu, Uig Sands is a culinary experience not to be missed. Alongside the restaurant, self-catering rooms are available to book. Last year,  spoke with Kathleen Milne, a librarian responsible for the running of four remote libraries, each on a Hebridean island. Speaking from Stornoway on the Island of Lewis, she was angry when she told me.‘Here, like everywhere else in the UK, the last decade has been nothing but fire-fighting. Some libraries have been cut and cut and cut. We've never really been able to do what we want to do and we can do. Libraries are a basic human right and I long for the time we don't have to fight and we can concentrate on making a difference. ‘Libraries are part of what it is to be human. It is one of our greatest human achievements..'I started by asking Kathleen how she made the move from South Africa to the outer Hebrides...

Dr Brian Briggs is a man of two halves; by day he is the Nature Reserve Manager at the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust's Llanelli reserve, but by night he is the lead singer and songwriter for the Glastonbury-playing, Later-with-Jools-Holland-appearing, Silver-record-selling, “Rural existentialist orni-folk-band”, Stornoway. Reforming after a 10 year hiatus for a new tour and a new album, on a walk around the Llanelli reserve, Brian details how being immersed in nature during the pandemic is what has brought the band (like the Lapwing) back from the brink.In this interview of two halves, Brian discusses the dynamism of Wetlands; the return of Grebes, Lapwings and Water Voles; the battles of invasive Mink vs. Kingfisher, and of industrious winter-causeway-crossing hungry Hedgehog vs. beautiful rare lapwing egg. But also, Brian opens up about an awakening, through birdsong, to an appreciation of our Sonic world; about a creative excitement of using Nature both as metaphor and instrument; and, why Stornoway's music ultimately works best outdoors. The Labour Party has launched a commitment to major political reforms which it says would see a transfer of power 'from Westminster to the people of Britain'. Included in the plan titled 'A New Britain', would be the devolution of certain powers to regions and counties. The current government has already announced Cornwall, Suffolk, and part North East England would be granted more devolved powers including extra funding and elected mayors, if the local communities there support it. But what could Labour's devolution plan mean for rural communities? We speak to Mark Shucksmith, Professor of Planning at Newcastle University who's worked widely on rural communities and the economy. All week we're looking at abattoirs, large and small. While large abattoirs are finding it difficult to staff their operations, smaller abattoirs say the burden of regulation, which is more expensive on very low throughput, is causing them to close. The future of small abattoirs has been a concern for many farmers for years and Farming Minister Mark Spencer has said he is actively looking at supporting smaller abattoirs, to keep them running. It might not be in time to save some though. The Tottingworth abattoir in Heathfield in East Sussex is earmarked for closure in January. We speak to farmer Guy McNaughton who's been campaigning to save it. In Scotland, farmers and crofters in the Western Isles, where producers tend to have small numbers of livestock,  rely on small abattoirs. The abattoir in Stornoway is run and subsidised by the Islands' Council. It's a modern operation and takes stock from the length of the Outer Hebrides. We speak to the people who run it and the crofters who rely on it.

YOLObirder's guest in the post-environmental apocalyptic wasteland is Dr Brian Briggs, a conservationist and musician on a lifelong quest to tune into the natural world.  Brian is both a manager of an internationally important nature reserve, and the singer/songwriter for the band Stornoway. Stornoway were the first unsigned band to appear on Later… With Jools Holland and have subsequently toured worldwide and enjoyed main stage appearances at festivals including Glastonbury, Latitude and Isle of Wight.  Stornoway's three acclaimed albums and three EPs combine Brian's two great passions of music and nature and their most recent, Bonxie, entered the UK Charts inside the Top 20 and featured the songs of twenty different species of birds. ‘I am a nature manager but I don't manage nature - I nudge it and fight it and kick it about on a small scale, but really it manages me and my days - it is my church, and its power shapes and drives everything I do' In this episode Brian talks about using birdsong in his music, having seabirds in his bath and the time finding a rare bird led to the deployment of riot vans!
