Mary welcomes Rob Yardley to the podcast, Rob is a true servant in the church with the heart of a pastor and theologian. Rob has served on several boards of note and continues to do so - from Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa to ICR to Thru the Bible with J Vernon McGee. His new role as Executive Director of The Berean Call is one that is dear to his heart because of his friendship with the late Dave Hunt, and of course T.A. McMahon, who has recently retired. When putting godly men like Dave Hunt, TA, Henry Morris, and J Vernon side by side we get a picture of 20th century men that God greatly used. We will look at the legacies of each one, and talk about what it means to be a Berean in 2025. Where are today's great apologists and theologians? A thoughtful hour with a thoughtful brother. The advice and support that we receive in the early days of breastfeeding can have a profound impact on our journey. My guest today, Abby, had an experience with an unnamed IBCLC that really knocked her confidence, and could have had dire consequences, had she followed the incorrect advice she was given.Abby discovered that she had inverted nipples while preparing for the arrival of her son, Yardley, but she managed to find some adaptations that worked for her and initially feeding was working for both of them. When she then started to feel some pain when nursing, she visited an IBCLC for advice. What she got was an alarming consultation in which her concerns were not listened to, her supply was inaccurately assessed, and she left feeling fearful and confused. Luckily, in this case, Abby was able to find other support from her sister and other practitioners that she follows online. Abby is sharing this story with me having just finished her training as a peer supporter. We both feel that these experiences should be shared to help those of us who work with nursing parents to understand what bad practice is, and to see the impacts it can have on parents. My latest book, ‘Supporting the Transition from Breastfeeding: a Guide to Weaning for Professionals, Supporters and Parents', is out now.You can get 10% off the book at the Jessica Kingsley press website, that's uk.jkp.com using the code MMPE10 at checkout.Follow me on Twitter @MakesMilk and on Instagram @emmapickettibclc or find out more on my website www.emmapickettbreastfeedingsupport.comResources mentioned - https://www.unicef.org.uk/babyfriendly/breastfeeding-the-dangerous-obsession-with-the-infant-feeding-interval/This podcast is presented by Emma Pickett IBCLC, and produced by Emily Crosby Media.

Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/650 Presented By: Jackson Hole Fly Company, TroutRoutes, Togens Fly Shop, Togiak River Lodge Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors In this episode, we'll chat with Nick Yardley, the president of Fulling Mill. We dive deep into the fascinating story of how Fulling Mill became a leader in the UK and US markets, sharing insights on their top fly patterns and the meticulous process that ensures only the best end up in your fly box. We also explore stillwater fishing, with Nick offering expert tips and his favorite flies for targeting brook trout in the Northeast. Additionally, you'll hear about his passion for the Great Lakes and why this region holds a special place in his heart for salmon and steelhead fishing. Join us as we uncover these topics and more, giving you the knowledge to enhance your fly fishing adventures this season. Don't miss out on this insightful conversation with Nick Yardley from Fulling Mill! Episode Chapters with Nick Yardley on Fulling Mill 1:38 - Nick shares his personal journey into fly fishing, starting from a young age with course fishing in Yorkshire, England. His interest shifted to fly fishing during a family visit to Dorset, where a gamekeeper introduced him to the sport. This experience led him to sell his match fishing gear and buy his first fly rod, albeit an unsuitable one. However, he later received a more appropriate and cherished split cane fly rod from a relative, which solidified his passion for fly fishing. 4:34 - We talk about his move from Britain to the United States in 1986. Nick explains that he didn't find the job market in Britain appealing due to high unemployment and general discontent at the time. Seeking adventure, he pursued a path in the US, leveraging his background in climbing. 8:22 - We explore the history of Fulling Mill. Its origins date back to the 1930s when Denis Whetham, a British schoolboy, took up fly tying after a rugby accident left him paralyzed. Upon returning to his family home in Kenya, he garnered local interest and even received commercial orders, leading him to pursue fly tying passionately. Fulling Mill's flies are now widely available across US fly shops, and in 2023, they introduced a new range of fly tying materials, further solidifying their market presence. 18:00 - Nick mentions that Fulling Mill aims to be a one-stop shop for fly fishing, catering to various needs across different regions, although trout fishing constitutes 80% of their business. He also highlights their innovative approach with Euro nymphing flies, offering different weights for the same fly size and enhancing the consumer experience. Furthermore, Fulling Mill is planning to introduce a new range of flies for warm water and specific regions by 2025, including patterns for strikers in the northeast and shrimp patterns for the Caribbean and Belize. 22:31 - Nick discusses the process of understanding market needs and providing appropriate products for fly fishing. He says that the strong feedback comes from retail stores and their servicing reps, as different territories have unique demands. He mentions Devin Olsen, a well-known figure in fly fishing who is both a signature fly tier and a shop owner, highlighting how his flies have broad national appeal. 24:18 - We dig into brook trout fishing, focusing on effective flies and ideal locations. Nick recommends using size 14, highly floatable dry flies with foam bodies, mentioning specific types like little chernobyls, ants, and beetles. He explains that when fishing for brook trout in the White Mountains of New Hampshire during the hot summer months, small black beetles work well due to the cold streams. 31:09 - Nick describes their operation in Kenya as well-established, employing about 215 people who are provided with healthcare and a retirement program, making it a desirable place to work. Most employees are around 40 years old and have been with the company for 15-20 years, showcasing their experience. 33:07 - Nick shares his experiences fishing in the Gaspe region, noting the high quality of public waters and the strong salmon stocks. He also mentions the ease of planning a fishing trip in Quebec using resources like the website saumongaspe.com. 40:00 - He finds the Great Lakes steelhead fishing to be remarkable, especially on the Salmon River. Nick says that in salmon fishing, traditionally, single-handed rods with streamers were used, but now many anglers are using two-handed rods for swinging. This method is becoming popular on the Salmon River, where it is effective for covering extensive water quickly and efficiently with big rods and classic West Coast salmon flies. 42:14 - For Atlantic salmon in rivers like the Dartmouth, York, and Saint John, Nick typically uses a 12.5ft 7wt rod, which suits most conditions. However, in narrower sections of the York River, he switches to an 11ft switch rod or a 10ft 7wt single-handed rod. For fishing in the Great Lakes, he often uses either the 11ft switch rod or the 12.5ft 7wt rod rod, which are versatile enough to cover most of his needs. 45:27 - He recommends some fly patterns to bring when you're planning to go on a fishing trip in the Gaspe for Atlantic Salmon. 47:52 - We get into fishing for brook trout in the White Mountains and the types of flies used. For flies, Nick explains that it largely depends on the fishing location and personal preference. He prefers using a dry fly setup, typically starting in July and continuing through August until the waters become too cold. 50:30 - Nick expresses a strong desire to fish in Scandinavia, specifically targeting salmon, trout, and grayling, as he has never fished there before. He notes that the salmon fisheries in Scandinavia are collapsing this year, so he would likely wait until they recover. He also mentions other destinations he wants to explore. 58:02 - For stillwater fishing, Nick suggests using a floating crane fly or dry fly crane fly, commonly known as "daddy long legs" in Britain, noting their high effectiveness despite being underutilized in other regions. He also recommends the diawl bach, a classic Welsh fly known for its consistent performance. 58:39 - We get into the random segment where I ask him about his morning drink preference. Nick reveals that he's a big tea drinker, preferring Yorkshire tea. He explains that a proper cup of tea requires a teapot, boiling water poured over the tea, and some milk. He does not recommend using an old tea bag and warm water since it doesn't produce a good cup of tea. 1:00:37 - Nick enjoys a mixture of both podcast and music, but he also listens to a lot of audiobooks. He likes listening to The Stranglers, a band he grew up with in Britain. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/650
"As you wander around the Peloponnese Peninsula, it's like myth and history just constantly overlap. For history buffs, there's just so much to blow the mind in Southern Greece. Western Peloponnese is home to the Valley of the Gods. I went to Epidaurus in the Peloponnese, and you get a real flavour ancient sporting conquests. The place is home to Asclepius, the God of medicine, and is where they staged many sporting contests. Will Porras, who is the Executive Chef at Vault Brewing Company in Yardley, PA learned and honed his knowledge as a chef while working inside various kitchens while growing up, and further refined his craft under some very esteemed chefs. I spoke with Will, learning about his history within the culinary industry and what led him to become Vault Brewing Company's Executive Chef. Taking on the role of an Executive Chef is not for the faint of heart-something that Will has excelled at. Speaking of excelling at things, Vault Brewing Company has created a delicious combination of beers and elevated dining menus that they're now looking to expand (spoil alert--and you heard it first on Food Farms and Chefs Radio Show!). Joseph is a chip off the ol' block--quite literally, in fact. His family has owned and operated the water ice business for years, turning peoples muggy and frustratingly-hot summer days into joyful ones with their scratch-made water ice and soft-serve ice creams. However much his father had stuck to their traditional flavor, Joe has been thinking outside of the box and coming up with creative new flavors for the communities and visitors to enjoy. But with all good things, comes the tireless efforts to create it: So every day Joe and his team squeeze out every last flavorful drop of ingredients to create the best tasting water ice around!https://www.fuscoswaterice.comSolidified in the Hudson Valley as part of everyone's family, third-generation owner Peter Deising found even more attention for his family's business, Deisings Bakery & Restaurant, after the HBO-based Host of Last Week Tonight's John Oliver purchased equipment that Deising wanted for his bakery & restaurant. Peter had left an inquiry note on the door of the recently-closed chain restaurant, Red Lobster. What happened next was even more note-worthy: John Oliver noticed and issued a challenge to Demising, and in exchange for meeting the challenge the Deising Bakery and Restaurant would receive the equipment he inquired about. I'm a HUGE John Oliver fan, so this is how the Hudson Valley-based business came to my attention, and I was BEARY enticed to have them join me on my show to talk about the JO moment, and moreover to shed more light on the history of Deising Bakery & Restaurant, and what keeps their community coming back after so many years in business.https://www.deisings.comWhen it comes down to it, the time, energy, and effort that goes into plating up that perfect dish is at the heart of every Chef--something that leaves a lasting impression on anyone who visits them. Born in and raised in Ecuador, Veronica Fitzgerald moved to the US with her family in North Carolina as a teen. Growing up she was treated to her grandmother's empanadas on a regular basis, eventually learning how to make them as well. Years later, she treated her family and friends to her empanadas, and subsequently the pandemic inspired Veronica to create her business, V Empanadas. Soon thereafter, V-Empanada's was a hit, and she opened a shop inside Lancaster County Farmers Market. So, the next time you visit, be sure to check out Veronica's freshly made Empanadas and scratch-made guacamole, sauces, and desserts when you're there! The best way to end a meal is with something a little sweet--something that Pastry Chefs Sally Gadea and her husband Jemil know a lot about. Both Allison and Jemil have years of experience working as Executive and/or Corporate Chefs for high-end restaurants over the years; a key aspect that has helped refine what they offer inside their Yardley, PA-based business, Panna Gelateria. Of course owning and running a business takes a lot of skills too--and the pair sought out help from SCORE in Bucks County, PA. to aid them in getting started. So, a little help from their SCORE business mentor and the combined culinary pedigrees from both Chefs later...Panna Gelateria and Bakery was born. Now, you can indulge your sweet & savory cravings when you visit Panna Gelateria. Their menu offerings will always keep you interested--they have an ever-changing menu of small-batch gelatos, pastries, and more!Who let the dogs out? Allison and Sam Mattiloa did! And they invited all of your (fully vaccinated and trained) pups to the party too! Inspired by the pandemic to finally add a fur-baby to their family, Allison and Sam adopted Buda into their lives. But the pandemic lasted longer than anticipated, so the Brewerytown couple were fur-ther inspired to create a human and dog-friendly space to safely socialize. That space, called The Boozy Mutt, incorporates a bar, restaurant, and an indoors & outdoors space for pups and their fur-friends to play. And if you haven't caught the ball on the theme just yet--you can fetch some food and drinks for yourselves, order some treats for ''Fluffy'' from their pet-friendly food menu, and let the paws hit the floor running at The Boozy Mutt! . Just remember to reserve your day, month, or yearly pass for your furry friends before you visit

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the Roman emperor Tiberius. When he was born in 42BC, there was little prospect of him ever becoming Emperor of Rome. Firstly, Rome was still a Republic and there had not yet been any Emperor so that had to change and, secondly, when his stepfather Augustus became Emperor there was no precedent for who should succeed him, if anyone. It somehow fell to Tiberius to develop this Roman imperial project and by some accounts he did this well, while to others his reign was marked by cruelty and paranoia inviting comparison with Nero.WithMatthew Nicholls Senior Tutor at St. John's College, University of OxfordShushma Malik Assistant Professor of Classics and Onassis Classics Fellow at Newnham College at the University of CambridgeAnd Catherine Steel Professor of Classics at the University of GlasgowProducer: Simon TillotsonReading list:Edward Champlin, ‘Tiberius the Wise' (Historia: Zeitschrift für Alte Geschichte, 57.4, 2008)Alison E. With host retail coach Wendy Batten https://wendybatten.com/179/ Show Notes: I'm talking with Retailer Inner Circle member Jessica Gebauer. Jess owns Krysset Artisan Boutique & Market in Yardley, PA: a shop full of unique products and gifts made by artists all over the United States and Canada. Jess's business started as a monthly subscription box and evolved into a brick and mortar when she realized the subscription box was limited and she had bigger dreams. Working with makers has its challenges: being able to meet margins, being able to pay staff, etc. Jess's advice is to focus on makers who are set up to do wholesale and want to sell their goods to independent retail shops like Krysset. Jess uses Faire and other wholesale marketplaces, trade shows, local craft shows, and years of experience to find her vendors. Krysset has over 100 vendors in rotation. We talked a bit about Jess's journey to CEO. It has not been linear, as most shop owners will tell you! Jess describes opening her shop as being on the water skis attached to the boat, rather than being the one actually driving the boat, which is so true and an analogy I love. Jess opened Krysset in September 2021 as the pandemic lingered. She describes her first year as “really (really, really) rough.” She had a number of challenges she was facing in her personal life, leading to her first hire: her current shop manager, Michael. Her CEO hat has been coming out more and more in 2022 and 2023 as she settled into her shop, something we focus on inside the Retailer's Inner Circle. Here are a few very simple marketing ideas that have been working well for Jess and Krysset: 1. Treating their customers well and with respect when they come in the door. Jess's employees intuitively know that the people coming through the door want to be treated as a friend. It is so important to hire people who believe in genuine hospitality. 2. Updating the exterior of her retail store. With the help and suggestions of the Inner Circle community, Krysset got an exterior makeover that brought new customers into the shop. Immediately following making some changes, her foot traffic multiplied. 3. Carrying products that aren't carried at every boutique on the East Coast. At the end of the episode we have a conversation about why independent brick and mortar retail is so important. Jess was asked recently why she opened an independent retail store when “Amazon exists” and we both have strong opinions on that question as you probably do too! Tune in for our answers! About Jessica and Krysset: Jessica Gebauer is an entrepreneur who turned her passion for jewelry and artisan-made products into a successful retail shop. Her boutique, Krysset, is brimming with unique products from independent businesses across North America. As an advocate for the creative community, its her mission to support the dreams of other entrepreneurs. Why Jess exclusively sources from other small businesses and independent makers: “People think it's "novel" to shop small but they truly don't understand the magnitude of that decision. They don't understand the significance of choosing small, what that means for people's livelihoods, how much it's truly needed to maintain diversity and uniqueness among product choices plus how it encourages ingenuity and enriches people's lives - both the maker and the recipient of the product.” - Jess Gebauer You can follow along with Jess and Krysset here: Website | www.krysset.shop IG | @krysset_shop FB | www.facebook.com/KryssetShop Related podcasts we think you'll like: Episode 174: 5 Ways to Network in Your Own Community Episode 158: Becoming a Destination Shop Episode 122: Retail Success Series: CEO Mindset and Community with Sylvia Davis from Louisville Mercantile Episode 39: Retailer Success Series: How Jill Went from Hobbyist to Creative CEO About your host, Wendy Batten In case we haven't met yet, I'm Wendy, a small business coach and founder of the Retailer's Inner Circle, where I help other independent shop owners learn how to gain the right business skillsets to see more profits, paychecks, and joy as they navigate running their retail business.
