In this episode, Ivan Phillipsen takes listeners on an immersive journey into the strange and secretive world of birds in the family Caprimulgidae. These cryptically colored, nocturnal birds include nightjars, nighthawks, poorwills, and whip-poor-wills. Ivan reveals the fascinating biology of this group—everything from their frog-like gapes to their odd names and eerie calls.Listeners will learn about the distinctive physical traits and behaviors that define caprimulgids, including their specialized eyes for low-light vision, aerial insect-hunting strategies, and mating displays involving wing claps and booming dives. Ivan also explores their global distribution, evolutionary history, and conservation status, while highlighting standout species like the Lyre-tailed Nightjar, the Common Poorwill, and the elusive—and possibly nonexistent—Nechisar Nightjar. This deep dive into Caprimulgidae is packed with scientific insights and fun facts. Whether it's unpacking myths of goat-milking birds or listening to spooky vocalizations from around the world, the episode celebrates the mystique and diversity of these birds that thrive in the twilight.~~ Leave me a review using Podchaser ~~Link to this episode on the Science of Birds website Bird Conservancy of the Rockies [Learn More]Support the show

Dessert Wines – Part Two!

I had never tried a dessert wine till last year. I must admit they can be delicious and a great alternative to coffee. Vignoles is a high acid and high sugar white grape. Because of its high sugar content, it can be made into a late-harvest style sweet white, but is also produced into a dry and off-dry white wine. It is moderate in winter hardiness. Port wine is a Portuguese fortified wine produced in the Douro Valley of northern Portugal. It is a sweet wine, and can be either a white or red wine. It can also be produced using two different processes. First is a “reductive” ageing process where the wine is aged in a sealed container and not exposed to air. Because of this, there is no exposure to oxygen and no evaporation. This produces a wine that is smoother on the palate and less tannic. The second style is matured in wooden barrels, and known as “oxidative” aging. Because is has some minimal exposure to oxygen and some evaporation, the wine that remains is slightly more viscous. Our second wine is not a true "Port" wine, but is made using the same grapes and process.Tonight, we are comparing: 2021 Stone Hill Winery Late Harvest Vignoles. I purchased this wine at the winery for $24. This is an estate-bottled wine from Hermann, Missouri. They report it had 29-degree Brix at harvest and the wine is bottled with 12.6% residual sugar. The wine has aromas of honey, peach, and floral, and has 9.7% alcohol. This wine was awarded 90 points in the 2024 Decanter World Wine Awards. Our second wine is a non-vintage Nightjar from Cooper's Hawk Winery and Restaurants. The wine pairs perfectly with chocolate or rich cheese. It has the flavors of black cherry, blueberry, dried fig, toasted pecan, and cocoa bean. It has a long finish with hints of fruit preserves and has 18% alcohol. This is a port-style wine made with a blend of Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Cao, Bastardo, Alvarelhao, and Souzao. All are traditionally used in Port wines. Part way through the fermentation process, brandy is added to the wine, which kills the yeast and raises the alcohol content. It also leaves residual sugar in the wine. Port-style wines are sweet and fortified wines. Nightjar cannot be called a Port because it is not made in the Duoro Valley, a region in northern Portugal. The wine cost $24.99. Next week we will compare a Malbec wine from Argentina with a Washington State Syrah.

Reaching an important milestone in any business is a real achievement. It's the culmination of hard work, commitment and the result of providing a quality product or service. Probably both.... And in 2025, today's guests will toast their 40th year in the world of beer. And as we all know, that simply doesn't happen by accident.Since starting out in 1985, Herefordshire-based Wye Valley Brewery has been producing a wealth of excellent cask, keg and small pack beers. They've earned a reputation for consistency and product quality, seeing their beers served in more than 1,200 pubs and bars throughout the West Midlands and South Wales. As a result, they've gone from a humble beginning of producing approximately 10 brewers' barrels a week to an average of 1000 barrels per week, with further growth to come.Rewind back and the brewery's story started nearly 40 years ago. After brewing for years for Guinness, Wye Valley Brewery founder, Peter Amor decided to branch out on his own. He began brewing from the back of a pub in Canon Pyon in Herefordshire but soon moved to the old stable block of The Barrels in Hereford - Wye Valley Brewery's very first pub. After studying at Young's brewery in London, Peter's son, Vernon Amor, joined the brewery to help with the demands of the growing business. And some 17 years later, the business would signal its latest growth by moving into a 9-acre former cider mill in Stoke Lacy. But the journey doesn't stop there - far from it. Ongoing expansion has included the installation of an impressive bottling and canning setup from Bedford-based Enterprise Tondelli, as well as investment in its warehousing and solar PV infrastructure, with a new brewhouse part of the brewery's future, too. While beers such as it's super successful Nightjar, a kegged stout based on an original Wye Valley Brewery cask recipe, have helped put the brewery in front of eager new audiences. In this episode of The Brewers Journal Podcast, we spoke with head of sales and marketing Abbie Gadd and head brewer Gareth Batemen, to discover the secret of the brewery's longevity, the importance of moving with the times and why its 40th year will be the start of a new period of growth and evolution for the much-loved business.

As darkness descends on a May evening, the voices of many birds go quiet. But for some birds, especially those known as nightjars, the music is just beginning! An Eastern Whip-poor-will shouts out its name. The call of a Common Poorwill echoes across a canyon. A Common Pauraque calls from the thorn scrub. A Buff-collared Nightjar repeats its Spanish nickname, Tucuchillo. And a Chuck-will's-widow like this one calls from a woodland.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Tigers are at risk of extinction around the globe. But in India, hard fought conservation has seen the population double since 2006. While this is fantastic news, it does create new challenges to face: such as how to manage poachers, and negative encounters between tigers and animals kept as livestock, and the people who live in the tigers' range. Artificial intelligence, matched with innovative trail camera technology may be the answer to not only protecting tigers in India, but other large carnivores around the world. Published in the October 2023 edition of BioScience, 'Mitigating human-wildlife conflict and monitoring endangered tigers using a real-time camera-based alert system' outlines how the new tech (TrailGuard AI by Nightjar) works, and what implications it may have beyond tigers in India. The Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan find themselves trapped in history - and discover that even the most familiar of pasts can still conceal surprises. 1. Pursuit of the Nightjar by Tim Foley (4 parts) The story of the Nightjar has been told for many years. A spaceship helmed by the legendary Captain Goben on a vital mission of mercy, delivering medical supplies to a distant colony in the middle of devastating war, an act of bravery that triggers the end of the conflict. At her heels throughout the journey, her pursuer, the spaceship Nemesis, helmed by the dogged Captain Eslo, never quite able to catch her target. The Doctor has always wanted to witness these historic events. And now, alongside Nyssa and Tegan, he's got his chance. But history might just have other ideas. 2. Resistor by Sarah Grochala (2 parts) The TARDIS lands in a basement beneath a club in Warsaw in 1982 - which is a bit of a surprise as the Doctor was hoping to take Nyssa and Tegan to Yugoslavia. But a bigger surprise is yet to come - the band on stage are missing one of their musicians. And getting them through the gig is only the start of the TARDIS crew's troubles. Something strange is happening on the streets. Black cars glide through the city, picking off the unwary. Some are driven by the Secret Police... but others... by something very much not of this world.

Senior Scientist at Bird Life International, previously the Principal Scientist at the RSPB, and before that at the BTO, Paul Donald is a world expert on things that fly. As such, it is perhaps somewhat surprising that he has focused this expertise into a groundbreaking book about roads, the things that travel upon them, and the damage they do to nature. This in depth discussion of two halves begins by showcasing how Paul helped re-establish the population of one of the world's most endangered birds - the Raso Lark of the Cape Verde Islands, how birds living within the EU have greater life expectancy than those living outside it, and how Buddhist beliefs may be inadvertently bolstering the illegal trade in rare birds. From then it's on to the “extinction driving, landscape splitting, wildlife slaughtering, soundscape shattering, pollution spewing, climate changing, health wrecking, global catastrophe” which Paul has labelled ‘Traffication'. Did you know that the area in a bird's brain dedicated to song learning is smaller in a bird exposed to road noise? Did you know the first electric car dates from 1888? And did you know that there is a species of Nightjar known to exist purely because of a single piece of feathered roadkill scraped up from the tarmacadam?! But most importantly, if you drive a car, what single thing can you do today to help our wildlife? This and much more in November's episode of Trees a Crowd.

The People's Countryside Environmental Debate Podcast

Why shouldn't a couple of birds ruin the entertainment for thousands of people? Every year, thousands of people flock to watch the high-speed thrills of motorcycle speedway, but at what cost to the environment? Is it worth sacrificing the habitat of a few Nightjars for the entertainment of the masses? But here's where things get complicated - it's not just about a couple of birds. It's about a balance - a balance between conservation and entertainment, between preserving habitats and providing jobs and economic growth. As they say, death by a thousand cuts - it's only a few Nightjars, but if we follow that thinking, we can justify any development until their population is wiped out. So, where do we draw the line? Should we prioritize the needs of the environment or the desires of the people? And why shouldn't an environmentalist also enjoy motorsports? After all, motorcycle speedway is not the most polluting motorsport - the majority of the environmental impact comes from the transporting of the riders around the world. But then again, perhaps an environmentalist is just a label placed on someone by others. Is it possible to be both a conservationist and a motorsport enthusiast? Can we find a way to strike a balance between these seemingly opposing forces? This discussion between your co-hosts Stuart and William was sparked by the following question sent in by Daphne in Exeter, Devon, England. “Stuart, you mention you are interested in the sport of Speedway, what are your thoughts on the failed planning application to build a new venue for Exeter Speedway? It was turned down because rare Nightjar birds that nest nearby would be disturbed. How can a few birds be more important than thousands of people's entertainment? How can you be an environmentalist and still like motorsport?” In this episode Stuart and William were joined by long time listener Hedley Thorne, who was invited to take his place in the ‘Listeners Chair', where he sat in and contributed to the recording, and gave his opinions on the topic discussed. To get your chance of appearing on the podcast and sit in the ‘Listeners Chair', we have a stretch goal on our Patreon page where once we get to ten Beyond Stereotypes support tier backers, everyone on this tier will be entered into a quarterly draw, and the winner will be offered the opportunity to make an appearance on the podcast. A sunny hike, with added party tricks, in the pretty countryside around East Worldham. Led ably by members of Walk Alton, Clare discovers the beauty of this part of east Hampshire. Every episode in this series has been suggested by a Ramblings listener. Helen Dudley and Ian Fleming from Walk Alton wrote to the programme and invited Clare to discover more about this very active organisation and the national scheme to which it belongs, Walkers Are Welcome. For its small size, a population of around twenty thousand, Alton has a disproportionately large number of walking groups and two walking festivals, all run by committed volunteers. Today's route is around 7 miles long and starts in the village of East Worldham, two miles east of Alton. They follow the map south, along part of the Hangers Way (hangers are very steep, wooded slopes) to Binswood, an ancient area of woodland managed by the Woodland Trust. Next they head to Shortheath Common, an important area of heathland, before looping back via another part of Binswood and returning to East Worldham via King John's Hill. Joining them en route is Elinor Newman of the South Downs National Park who discusses a rare habitat known as 'quaking bog', and surprises everyone with her uncanny impressions of both nightjars and beetles. Looking at the things in nature, aren't you filled with wonder. Why does the sun always rises in the east? why does the rainbow have only 7 colours and not 12 or 24? Well, today's story is about one such question that a little girl Geeta has.Free activity sheet available at www.rituvaish.com/moon-why-do-you-stay-awakeSend your artwork to rituvaish@gmail.com.TranscriptGeeta was lying on her bed reading her favourite book. The moon's rays were shining on her bed through her pretty pastel blue curtains.Children, what's your favourite bedtime storybook? Thanks for sharing that with meMom entered the room and planting a kiss on Geeta's forehead said, good night, dear! Now it's time to sleep. I love you!”“Mom why doesn't the moon go to sleep?” pointing towards the moon that could now be seen through her window Geeta said.“It does, during the daytime, “mom said tucking her lovingly in her blanket with stars and moon printed on it.”By now the curiosity had taken the better of Geeta. She wasn't satisfied with her mother's answer, so she slipped into her flip-flops and wrapping herself in the blanket tiptoed into the garden. She met an owl in the neem tree.“Owl, you are considered the wisest of all animals w, can you please tell me, why the moon stays awake at night?” Geeta asked apprehensively.“That's simple! The moon stays awake at night so my friend owls and I can gather food. Else we'll go hungry. You know we stay awake the whole night and sleep during the day Thanks, the moon for shining on us.” said the owl as he flew away.Geeta still wasn't satisfied. She roamed around in the garden thinking about the moon and what it does up in the sky.Her eyes suddenly fell on a rabbit hopping around in the garden.“Rabbit, can you please tell me why the moon stays awake at night?” she asked. The rabbit stopped and cheerfully answered, “So, I can play with my friends!” Looking up at the moon he exclaimed, “Thanks, Moon!” And he hopped away.Children, if you were allowed to play games at night, what games would you play in the dark? That's interesting! But be safe.Geeta wasn't satisfied with the rabbit's answer, so she moved ahead towards the big garden gate.Children, whom do you think Geeta will. Meet now?Let's listen ahead.Geeta heard a beautiful singing of a bird. Geeta turned her head in the direction of the music. She saw a jungle nightjar bird in the jasmine creeper near the boundary wall.‘Hey! Nightjar birdy! Can you please tell me why the moon stays awake at night?”The jungle nightjar bird stopped singing and answered in her soothing voice, “Aha! That's so that we can sing beautiful melodies in the bright moonlight. Thanks, Moon for shining on us so that we get the inspiration to sing.”“Singing in the moonlight! That sounds interesting!” Geeta thought. But Geeta still wasn't satisfied with the birdy's answer, but she started tracing back her footsteps when suddenly she saw little twinkling lights near the big neem tree.Children, what are those? That's right! They are the lovely fireflies.“Hey fireflies, can you please tell me why the moon stays awake at night?” Geeta asked.“That's so that we can show our dance to all our nocturnal friends!” exclaimed all the fireflies in unison.Children, if Geeta stayed back in the garden, whom do you think she would have met? And what reason would that animal give about -why does the moon stay awake? That's so nice. Thank you for sharing.Geeta wasn't satisfied by the answers given by the owl, the rabbit, the jungle nightjar and the fireflies, but the next day was school, and she had to go to bed. So, she walked back towards the main door when she looked up to see the moon once again.“Moon, why do you stay awake at night?” she asked looking at the moon. The moon smiled and answered, “So I can see you are safe and tucked in the bed. Have a good night, Geeta and sleep tight!”Now, that put a smile on Geeta's face, and she was finally satisfied. She went back to her bedroom dragging her stars and moon blanket and got into her bed. She was soon asleep with a big smile on her face.

Some birds, such as the Northern Bobwhite, take their names from their songs or vocalizations: "Bobwhite! Bobwhite!" The Killdeer is another bird named for its song: "Kill-dee, kill-dee, kill-dee." There are others. "Poorwill, poorwill, poorwill" calls this Common Poorwill.
