Guest-host Carole O'Neill's guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Scott Gordon, author of the book Head Fake. Scott Gordon's fiction has appeared in the Green Hills Literary Lantern (GHLL), Modern Times Magazine, Pennsylvania Literary Journal, The Satirist, and Mobius Magazine. In addition to writing fiction, he has written and directed films and television series, including A History of Black Achievement in America, Great American Authors, and more. Scott spent years working as a Youth Advocate for juvenile offenders with mental illness. Head Fake is inspired by the strength and courage of the kids he worked with. Originally from New Jersey, Scott lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Samantha, and their two rescue pups, Mel Brooks and Khaleesi Bee.    In her book review, Carole O'Neill stated:   As I began reading Head Fake, I wasn't sure it was something I would finish. After all, mentally ill teenagers centered around the game of basketball was everything I would avoid choosing when I decided to read a new author.   My surprise was the way Scott Gordon used humor on nearly every page to enhance Mikey's interaction against the antics of the high-risk offenders he was about to coach. The more difficult challenge was to make sure Mikey's own clinical depression didn't become the reason for a failed experiment.   By the second chapter, I had forgotten about the sport of basketball and raced through the pages to find out how each of these disturbed students would be saved. The violent offenders and outcasts battled with bipolar disorder and street violence to arrive each day to train with a coach they believed would get them a win.   Halfway through the book, I found myself cheering for the team and their impossible hurdles toward a goal no one thought could be reached. It is difficult to imagine life without them,” she continues. “At the same time, there is reluctance to face the realities hidden within them, a fear of thinking about what happens inside them. Thus, the prison is present in our lives and, at the same time, it is absent from our lives.” --Angela Davis, Are Prisons Obsolete?Joining me for a conversation on this topic is Bryan Davis and Nicholas Leete of LGBT Books to Prisoners and Mira Braneck of A Room of One's Own bookstore.LGBT Books to Prisoners was born out of the Wisconsin Books to Prisoners (WI BtP) in 2007. Who was Joseph Smith? Even after nearly 200 years since the first Book of Mormon was published in 1830, Smith remains something of an enigma. He is viewed as a charismatic farm-boy prophet and martyr by Latter-day Saints and a public enemy, adulterer, and charlatan by many others. How did Smith write the Book of Mormon and convince his followers he had received another testament of Jesus Christ? This week and next on the Profile, we feature Mormonism Research Ministry (www.MRM.org) staff member Eric Johnson. Our two-part broadcast is an exclusive training presentation Eric gave our Watchman Fellowship's Utah Mission Team this past July about Joseph Smith and how the Book of Mormon came to be. The legislation has rattled local reporters, public officials, and police transparency advocates for its retaliatory nature and overall vague language.  Executive producer Hayley Sperling sat down with Tone Madison publisher Scott Gordon to get the details — or lack thereof — on the story.  Mentioned on the show A new Wisconsin law undermines the transparency pitch for police body cameras [Tone Madison] Wanna talk to us about an episode? Welcome to the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast! This week, we have defenseman Henry Thrun to talk all about new San Jose Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky. (56:00)Warsofsky ran the defense last year and worked closely with all the defenders, Thrun included. Thrun shares his insights into Warsofsky's coaching and development style, and how he thinks next year will be different than last year. But first, Sheng and Keegan share their initial reactions to the hiring of Ryan Warsofsky and discuss some of the industry chatter about his reputation and coaching style. (02:15)Why does Warsofsky, now the youngest coach in the NHL, make sense for a rebuilding San Jose Sharks team? (08:50)Will they keep Brian Wiseman as a power play coach for next season? (12:00)Who should they bring in to coach the defense? (15:05)Why Warsofsky despite the Sharks having a terrible defense and penalty kill last season? (19:20)Why not Marco Sturm? (22:30)Lastly, we focus a bit on the upcoming 2024 NHL Entry draft, including adding a few more confirmed names to the Sharks' Combine interview list. (38:00)Now, it's time for the Henry Thrun interview! (56:00)We start off hot: Ryan's a coach who was part of a staff that led the San Jose Sharks to just 47 points last year. What's going to be different next season? (56:30)How did Henry think he got better under Warsofsky? (57:32)What makes Warsofsky a strong development coach? (1:00:45)How does his coaching style compare to David Quinn's? (1:02:20)Thrun shares just how direct Ryan's communication can be, and how that's helpful to his development. (1:03:55)Sheng asks about Warsofsky's competitiveness and shares a story about Ryan knocking over former Shark Steven Lorentz in practice in the AHL. (1:08:21)Finally, Henry shares his offseason plans and outlines some plans for late-summer scrimmages with Will Smith and Collin Graf. (1:10:22)Thanks for watching!  ★ Support this podcast ★

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is founded upon the Book of Mormon. But from where did the Book of Mormon originate? According to Joseph Smith, the founder of the LDS Church, the Book of Mormon comes from sacred gold plates he uncovered in 1827 near his home in Manchester, New York. What were these plates? How did Smith obtain them? How did he bring them back to his home? Where are they now? Find out this week and next as the Watchman Fellowship 2023 mission team to Utah sat down with author and missionary to LDS, Bill McKeever, of Mormon Research Ministry (mrm.org) to discuss these and other questions. Joining us this week for the second time is ex-OSA Scientologist and whistleblower, survivor, teacher, blogger, independent journalist and researcher, and survivor advocate, Scott Gordon!  If you've been listening to this show for a while, you've seen many examples of how cults hide in plain sight where the only people who see their shadows are the victims. Scientology is a cult we have all heard of and the mystique behind it involving the infamous L. Ron Hubbard, high profile actors straight out of Hollywood, and people in positions of power undoubtedly leaves a lot to the imagination. It's a looming topic I've been wanting to cover since beginning this podcast and I'm grateful to have met Scott who has unique insight into and about Scientology from his personal experience working within the church. He was trained in Scientology's infamous intelligence bureau, the “OSA” aka the ‘Office of Special Affairs' and became more of an ‘insider' than most ground-level staff ever do. He has a blog called ‘Watchful Navigator” where he documents and whistle-blows his harrowing experiences in his years in the Church of Scientology and shares insider information on topics related to what he uncovered during and after his time in the Church of Scientology and since awakening to Scientology being a cult back in 2006. The thing I appreciate the most about Scott's testimony and insight is that he's able to share two sides of the story - the good and the bad, the truth and the lies - so that we can understand why so many have been intrigued by AND deceived by Scientology. If cults were all bad, people would have no interest in joining. Learning to discern what is true and what is false, and what is good and what is bad can help us develop our own discernment so we never find ourselves in a position of being lured into one of the many countless cults that are embedded into our society waiting for us to walk through the door.Last time Scott was on, we dove head-first into Scott's personal life story, his journey of stumbling upon and joining the Church of Scientology, introduced Scientology founder - L Ron Hubbard, shared the relationship Scientology and L Ron Hubbard are theorized to have to the deep state and MK Ultra projects based off Scott's personal and intensive research, and so much more. If you didn't listen to that one, make sure you go back and check that one out because it will leave your jaw on the floor and have you on the edge of your seat! I'll have it linked in the show notes below! This week, Scott is going to dive deeper into his personal testimony, share with us the abuse David Miscavage has been involved in, scandals involved within the church including the Lisa McPhearson case, some of the psychology and mind control used within Scientology, and much more.CONNECT WITH SCOTT:Blogs:"Watchful Navigator": Watchful Navigator | ex-OSA staffmember works to reform the subject of Scientology (wordpress.com)"Free Scientology": FreeScientology - Home"Free Scientology Center": FreeScientologyCenter - DROP Recovery"David Miscavige Predator": DAVID MISCAVIGE - PREDATOR - Kidnapping, Rape & Murder (davidmiscavigepredator.com)Facebook: @Scott Gordon - Scott Gordon | FacebookCONNECT WITH THE IMAGINATION:All links: Emma Pietrzak on Direct.meWebsite:Stand By Survivors - Everyone Has A Story...Support the show

This week, we are going to take you down a rabbit hole of epic proportions. Joining us, is ex-Scientologist and whistleblower, survivor, teacher, blogger, independent journalist and researcher, and survivor advocate, Scott Gordon!  The cult of Scientology is a topic I've long been wanting to cover - especially amid the recent human trafficking allegations and missing person scandals involving Church of Scientology Leader, David Miscavage. For those of you who have been following along, you've seen examples of cults hiding in obvious and non-obvious places. From NXIVM, to Stillpoint Zen Cult, to cults that hide in small towns, and cults within Masonic Lodges… cults are everywhere! And Scientology is no exception. Scott's story is absolutely riveting. This is an important topic and story because it shows how corruption can hide in plain sight and how if you mix enough truth and sprinkle in just enough lies, you can create a perfect great deception cocktail. It's an important topic to be educated on because no one is exempt from being a potential victim - even you listening. Not only does Scott carry the weight of his own story, but he's also been helping to carry Christy Wood's story as well - who is a David Miscavige and Scientology survivor. We'll be covering that story as well on this podcast in a future episode. But as our guest this week, author, apologist, and missionary to Latter-Day Saints Eric Johonson notes in his new book Introducing Christianity to Mormons, many former Mormons are still open to discussing questions of God's existence and what the Bible says about Jesus. This week and next on Apologetics Profile, President of Watchman Fellowship and former fourth-generation Latter-Day Saint James Walker sits down with Eric to discuss his new book and give you some sound doctrinal and practical insights in to how best to engage current and former Mormons with the truth of the Gospel.Eric Johnson has been a student of Mormonism since 1987 when he first served as a summer missionary to Utah. Eric graduated from San Diego State University as well as at Bethel Seminary San Diego. Eric cohosts the daily radio program Viewpoint on Mormonism and writes for MRM's Mormonism Researched newsletter.  He is the co-author of Answering Mormons' Questions: Ready Responses for Inquiring Latter-day Saints (Kregel, 2013) and  Mormonism 101: Examining the Religion of the Latter-day Saints (Baker Book, 2015).Related Links: Get the rest of the story including some of our most popular podcasts on Mormonism, access to some of our key LDS articles and our free, 4-page Watchman Fellowship Profile on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormonism): Watchman Fellowship articles on Mormonism: watchman.org/LDS Watchman Fellowship Profile on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: watchman.org/Mormonism Eric Johnson's ministry - Mormonism Research Ministry: MRM.org Eric Johnson's new book, Introducing Christianity to Mormons: Bit.ly/EricJohnsonBook Watchman Fellowship video on Jesus of Nazereth (32-min.): watchman.org/Jesus Related Apologetics Profile Podcasts on Mormonism 2022 Apologetics Profile podcast interview with Sandra Tanner (Part1): watchman.org/Tanner1 2022 Apologetics Profile podcast interview with Sandra Tanner (Part2): watchman.org/Tanner2 2022 Apologetics Profile podcast interview with Sandra Tanner (Part3): watchman.org/Tanner3 Apologetics Profile podcast What Is the Gospel? with Mormon apologist Scott Gordon and Christian apologist James Walker (YouTube):  watchman.org/GordonWalker  Apologetics Profile podcast with Lynn Wilder (Part 1): watchman.org/Lynn1 Apologetics Profile podcast with Lynn Wilder (Part 2): watchman.org/Lynn2 Apologetics Profile podcast with Micah Wilder (YouTube - Part 1): watchman.org/Micah1 Apologetics Profile podcast with Micah Wilder (YouTube - Part 2): watchman.org/Micah2 Additional ResourcesFREE: We are also offering a subscription to our 4-page bimonthly Profiles here: www.watchman.org/Free.PROFILE NOTEBOOK: Order the complete collection of Watchman Fellowship Profiles (over 600 pages -- from Astrology to Zen Buddhism) in either printed or PDF formats here: watchman.org/notebook. Racism has been a tragic aspect of our nation's history. But did you know that the Book of Mormon considers dark skin to be a curse? In the Book of Mormon, sections such as Mormon 5:15; 1 Nephi 12:23; 2 Nephi 5:21-22; Alma 3:6; and 2 Nephi 30:6, are clear in what they teach. Dark skin is "loathsome" whereas white or light-skin is "delightsome" and a sign of God's favor. The 1830 version of the Book of Mormon used to read "white and delightsome" (a curious explanation from the LDS Church) but modern versions now say "pure and delightsome." Up until 1978, blacks were not allowed to enter LDS temples or be ordained to the LDS priesthood. But what is the current position of the LDS Church today about racism and dark skin? Is dark skin still a curse?  On part three of our discussion with former Mormon and the great-great granddaughter of Brigham Young, the church's second President and Prophet, James Walker discusses the difficult issue of racism and dark skin in LDS doctrines and what it means for the church today. We will also be featuring a question-and-answer session with our missionary team on this episode you won't want to miss. Related Links: Get the rest of the story including some of our most popular podcasts on Mormonism, access to some of our key LDS articles and our free, 4-page Watchman Fellowship Profile on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormonism): Watchman Fellowship articles on Mormonism: watchman.org/LDS Watchman Fellowship Profile on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: watchman.org/Mormonism Sandra Tanner's ministry - Utah Lighthouse: Utlm.org New biography, Lighthouse: Jerald and Sandra Tanner, Despised and Beloved Critics of Mormonism, by Ronald Huggins V. In the Book of Mormon, Moroni chapter ten verse 32 says "Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ..." The words sound familiar, but do Moroni's references to "grace" and "Christ" really speak of the same grace and of the same Christ found in the New Testament? No. Note that Moroni says God's grace is only sufficient if you deny yourself of all ungodliness first. But how is that to be done? According to Romans 7, not even the Apostle Paul could do that! But according to Moroni, you must deny yourself of all ungodliness before Christ bestows sufficent grace upon you. Then and only then does God's grace "kick in." The second book of Nephi, chapter 25, verse 23 says for example that "it is by grace we are saved" however grace comes only "after all we can do." Clearly this is not in accordance with what the New Testament teaches. It is indeed by grace we are saved, but not by works of our own. We can't simply do stuff in church to make ourselves right with God. We cannot earn our salvation. "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9, NASB). On part two of our conversation with former LDS Sandra Tanner, we explore in more detail the LDS concept of grace, works, and salvation. We also discuss the problematic LDS scripture known as the Book of Abraham.Related Links: Get the rest of the story including some of our most popular podcasts on Mormonism, access to some of our key LDS articles and our free, 4-page Watchman Fellowship Profile on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormonism): Watchman Fellowship articles on Mormonism: watchman.org/LDS Watchman Fellowship Profile on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: watchman.org/Mormonism Sandra Tanner's ministry - Utah Lighthouse: Utlm.org New biography, Lighthouse: Jerald and Sandra Tanner, Despised and Beloved Critics of Mormonism, by Ronald Huggins V. Sandra sits down with Watchman Fellowship President James Walker to discuss her and her late husband Jerald's journey out of the LDS church in her new biography Lighthouse - Jerald and Sandra Tanner Despised and Beloved Critics of Mormonism by Ronald V. Huggins.Sandra was kind and gracious enough to come and speak with our mission team that traveled to Utah this past July to share the gospel with members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The full interview was recorded live with our team and part three will feature a question-and-answer session with our missionaries and Sandra.  Here on part one, Sandra describes how she as a Mormon boasted of being related to Brigham Young but had never read any of his most famous sermons. Tonight Warren has a very special guest in his shed. It's Scott from the Scott Gordon Band. Yep, he's normally surrounded by his stunningly talented band, but on this occassion he's sharing a solo set including blues and country roots goodness from the 2021 album Ulster Americana. It's all so lovely and I can see greatness on the horizon like a dapple grey horse rising high up along the ridgeway with the sun setting behind its floaty mane and sweaty muscular stature. Along with drummer Quin Kirchner, Chicago's Hanging Hearts consists of Cole DeGenova and Chris Weller, two Oak Park high school chums who went on to formulate their musical identities at Boston's Berklee College of Music during the first decade of this century. Tone Madison's own Scott Gordon describes the band as "brash and frequently exuberant" and "moving between surging, rock-inspired melodies one moment and fragmented free jazz the next." I dialed up saxophonist Chris Weller to get the low down on the band, his other projects, and his role with Big Fish Booking -- one of today's premier creative music booking and management agencies.
