John is joined by returning guest Paul Volsch from the Emerald FlowShow (@EmeraldFlowShow on Twitter & Bsky) and first time guest Will Young from VOW and his Creative Control PW blog (@CreativeControlPW on Bsky) to break down three big shows from Japan! But first, John gives an update on the current podcast schedule (as you may have noticed, we're doing these things more often again now!) and some brief thoughts on two major recent joshi shows: STARDOM's All Star Grand Queendom and Sendai Girls' Meiko Satomura Retirement Show. Then all three of them get into the main topics, starting with NOAH's big Sumo Hall show from May 3rd. They discuss NOAH's best attendance number at Ryogoku in six years, OZAWA's title reign and whether or not it should have ended here, whether the booking has been affected by Tetsuya Naito possibly coming in (and actually get breaking Naito news during the middle of recording!), and break down every match on the card as well.Afterward they review NJPW's two Wrestling Dontaku shows from 5/3 & 5/4 in Fukuoka (after a brief overview of big matches from two previous stops on the tour in Hiroshima & Saga), including: full breakdowns of every match on both show, the Dog Pound Steel Cage match and how it compares to last year, directions heading into Dominion, Tetsuya Naito & BUSHI's goodbye to New Japan (for now?), LIJ's official breakup, Hirooki Goto's already record breaking title reign and how it compares to other recent title reigns, a bit of a mea culpa from John on Callum Newman, ZSJ & Shingo being the next title challengers and whether Shingo might win the title (and turn heel??), Kyushu Pro involvement, and much more! In the end, it was just over an hour. Just over an hour between being asleep on the floor of Auckland hospital, to standing, bewildered under the delivery suite lights, helping to dress my newborn son. Mava had been induced on Sunday – the scans had suggested that all was ok but that our baby was small for his age. We spent an oddly serene day waiting for the induction medication to kick in. They give you a dose every two hours until you go into labour but sometimes it takes a few hours to work and sometimes it takes days. It was actually lovely, in a way. Mava and I both read for hours in-between the doses. We went for coffee and a stroll in the domain, Mava constantly assessing baby's every shift and every hint of a contraction. My goodness, though, when it happened... it happened. Zero to one hundred. A blur. I won't labour you with all of the details but it's become clear to me that there's a reason every parent has a birth story. It was surreal. It just felt like a week's worth of crazy experiences happened in the space of fifteen minutes. It was beautiful, wild, traumatic, thrilling... it was animal. All these things. Mava was incredible. I felt so proud of her, and yet so helpless at the same time. And weirdly through it all, I felt calm. I'm not bragging. I'm not saying calmness was a good response – honestly I was probably just a bit stunned – and it turned out our son was too when he came out. They hurried him off and chucked him on the oxygen and he regained his colour. I took my cues from our amazing midwife and the other hospital staff. She wasn't freaking out too much and so I didn't either. The scans were right – our son was small for his gestational age. But he what lacked in size he made up for in his capacity to feed. There can be no doubt he has inherited my skin tone, my hair colour, and my appetite. This morning is the longest I've been away from him in his life, but at five days old I know him well enough to know that right now he is probably feeding. Isn't it incredible how instinct works? Out of the womb, almost blind, and yet he absolutely throws himself at the boob. Head back, mouth wide, latch! Who taught him that?! A few random takeaways: 1) The placenta. Wow. That thing could feed a family of four. 2) We had three nights in hospital and a couple more in Birthcare afterwards. If our experience of the New Zealand healthcare system this week is anything to go by, it is being completely held together by migrant workers: Indians, Filipinos, Europeans, South Americans, Pasifika... they were fantastic. For all the justified concern over the health care system as a whole, we had a really positive experience and felt so grateful to the people working in what are often very tricky conditions. 3) Women's bodies, eh? To have the capacity to grow an entire human being, from his skinny little frog legs folded up at his belly, to his tiny little fingernails to the lightest fur on his pink little cheeks. To grow him, birth him, and then, having done it all, having done everything... to immediately switch to nourishing him day and night. What can I tell you about our son? He's got his mum's eyes. He sucks his thumb. His first music was the Koln Concert and he made sure to stay up to watch Will Young and Tom Latham score centuries against Pakistan. His name will be finalised soon enough. When he's bulked up a bit, he's got a long list of visitors waiting to meet him, too. After five nights away, yesterday I put our son in his carseat and drove him home. His older brother ran home from school and cuddled him on the couch. Through the madness and exhaustion of the week, running on caffeine, sugar, and love, we sat there together, a family. It was perfect.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of the Top Order Podcast it's a Black Caps focused show as Raj and Stu look back at New Zealand's performances in 2024 take stock of where the side is at heading into a relatively quiet 2025. We open the show by reviewing the 2024 results, which paint a picture of a middling side that had a big gap between their best performances and their worst ones, before discussing a bowling attack that saw some big changes over the past 12 months with the retirements of Neil Wagner and Tim Southee, plus the emergence of the likes of Will O'Rourke and Ben Sears. We also discuss the spin stocks and whether this is an area of concern. As we move to the batting department, there's plenty to discuss - primarily the lack of runs by the majority of the core group of players. We talk about Devon Conway, Will Young, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Kane Williamson and many others, plus the central contracting system and how New Zealand Cricket are managing the competing pull of franchise leagues. In this episode of the show, we reflect on the Black Caps' 3-0 series win against India, which left interesting questions for both sides as they head into their next fixtures. We also discuss potential World Test Championship final scenarios and the flurry of white-ball series from around the world.   The Black Caps made it a clean sweep against India with a 25-run victory at Wankhede Stadium, to cap off a remarkable month for New Zealand cricket. Ajaz Patel was crowned player of the match and Will Young the player of the series, but those performances might still not be enough to get them into the starting XI for the home summer. We talk through the spin bowlers on show, heap praise on Daryl Mitchell's fighting effort with bat in hand and raise questions that now face this Indian side: Are they still the best Test team in the world? Do Gautam Gambhir and the leadership group need to make changes? Can Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma bounce back against Australia? Is there a place for all three of Ravi Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar in the XI away from home? We also discuss whether the ICC need to consider moving to four-day Tests, then take a quick look at the white-ball series featuring NZ, Sri Lanka, England, West Indies, Australia and Pakistan - so many that we ran out of time to cover the 47 other series that are currently under way. In this episode of the show, we celebrate an incredible week for New Zealand Cricket that culminated in a Test win in India for the Black Caps for the first time in 36 years and a T20 World Cup for the White Ferns within 12 hours of each other. We also look back at Pakistan's bold decisions against England and how they paid off to set up a mouth-watering decider in the third Test of that series.   After opening with our thoughts, feelings and emotions as New Zealand fans, we start by discussing a White Ferns World Cup win that seemed almost unthinkable when the tournament began. It was a true team performance from New Zealand, and we highlight the key role players who played a huge part along the way, as well as focusing our attention on Amelia Kerr's remarkable few weeks. We then turn our attention to the Black Caps, who made history of their own this week by beating India in the first Test of the series - something they hadn't done for 36 years. There's plenty of praise for the bowlers - who skittled India for 46 in the first innings - the 'Rachin Ravindra is amazing' segment that has become a regular occurrence on the show over the past 12 months, as well as conversations about the toss and team selection. We also look at India's fightback, Sarfaraz's big hundred and what that means for the side going forward, Rohit Sharma's captaincy and much more as we break down this rollercoaster of a Test match.   To round out the show, we review Pakistan's turnaround in the second Test against England, which saw a host of changes that made the selection panel look like geniuses when Kamran Ghulam, Sajid Khan and Nauman Ali starred as the team surged to victory. Rob Thomas, Editor-in-Chief of Club + Resort Business, also takes a look at the latest news from across the industry. The new short game practice area at Indian Hills Country Club in Bowling Green, Ky. allows golfers to practice their putting on a dedicated green, with additional fairway space to hone their chipping and pitching skills. The short game area is dedicated to Bob McLean, a long-time superintendent at the club and one of the key figures behind its design. PTI Golf removed a total of 12 acres of turf at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas, Nev. and replaced it with natural desert vegetation. The Southern Nevada Water Authority recently lowered the water budget in the Las Vegas Valley with a 33 percent reduction in allotted water. The most efficient way to meet that threshold is to remove turf. The Club at Eaglebrooke in Lakeland, Fla. will kick off a golf course renovation in April 2025. During the project, crews will rebuild all 18 greens to their original size/shape and resurface with Tifeagle Bermuda grass. The agronomy team at the facility will make select drainage, irrigation, tee box, and bunker improvements, as well. Concert Golf Partners has upgraded the wells, pumps, irrigation, clubhouse roof, windows, doors, kitchen equipment, and HVAC at The Club at Pasadera in Monterey, Calif. The upcoming second phase of upgrades will include $1 million of renovations planned for the hacienda-style clubhouse, including an expanded outdoor seating area, wine lockers, and more. A five-month, $2.5 million dollar restoration of the King & Bear Golf Course at World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Fla. involved resurfacing all 18 greens, as well as the putting and chipping areas, with TifEagle Bermuda grass. Improvements also included significant upgrades to the irrigation and drainage systems to promote water conservation, enhance turf health, and provide optimal playing conditions throughout the year.

TW: this episode contains discussion of sexual assault and suicide.  In many ways, Will Young is the definition of resilience. As a child, he endured physical and psychological abuse at prep school. In his 20s, he found fame on a reality TV show and was forced to be public about his sexuality by a tabloid newspaper, after which he faced years of homophobia. In his 30s, he coped with extensive periods of depression as he struggled to understand his PTSD and tragically lost his twin brother, Rupert, to death by suicide. Now in his 40s, his survival is its own success. And yet, professionally, he has also thrived, selling over 10 million albums worldwide, scooping two Brit Awards and an Ivor Novello along the way. Four of his albums have reached number one. In person, Will is witty, smart and heartbreaking in equal measure. I think this is one of my favourite ever HTF episodes. We talk flunking his A-levels, dropping out of Strictly Come Dancing and relationship failures. Despite once stating he never had confidence in himself as a pop star, Young is about to release his ninth studio album, Light It Up and a new single, Falling Deep, was released last week.  As always, I'd LOVE to hear about your failures. Every week, my guest and I choose a selection to read out and answer on our special subscription offering, Failing with Friends. We'll endeavour to give you advice, wisdom, some laughs and much, much more.  Have something to share of your own? I'd love to hear from you! Before ‘The X Factor' and ‘The Voice', there was ‘Pop Idol', the ITV behemoth that spawned Simon Fuller's global mega-hit ‘American Idol'.  Season One climaxed on 9th February, 2002, when Gareth Gates - a 17-year-old former head chorister - and Will Young - a politely-spoken 23-year-old alumnus of Wellington College - slugged it out for the title of Pop Idol champion. Britain was captivated as the public strove to choose their favourite cover version of an unreleased Westlife album track - with over 15 million people tuning in, and 8.7 million casting their votes via telephone. Will emerged as the winner, but perhaps the real winner was the format - which centred the Judges, particularly ‘Nasty' Simon Cowell, in a way that would inspire dozens of talent show successors. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly recall how producer Nigel Lythgoe ramped up the ‘battle' element of the competition with rosettes and battle buses; consider the homophobic coverage of Young's sexuality in the mainstream media; and reveal Rebecca's place in Pop Idol history…  Further Reading: • ‘And your new Pop Idol is...
