The Dedeaux Download Podcast returns with Shotgun Spratling and podcast co-host Kasey Kazliner breaking down USC baseball's 3-1 week that featured a series win over Gonzaga and a dominant midweek win over Long Beach State. Shotgun and Kasey break down all the action, looking at the positives of the Trojans improving to 26-14 with an 11-7 mark in Big Ten play and a fourth-place spot in the standings behind only two ranked teams and Iowa. They discuss the play of Adrian Lopez powering the offense all weekend against the Zags as well as Ethan Hedges seeming to get back on track after a rough spell. Shotgun and Kasey also look at how the Trojans were able to bounce back after dropping the opener against Gonzaga with some uncharacteristically sloppy play thanks to the bullpen stepping up throughout the week. The podcasters also look at three negatives, including Kevin Takeuchi reinjuring his left shoulder during Tuesday's win at Long Beach and the RPI hit that one poor game can have as the Trojans start looking toward the postseason. After a break, USC head coach Andy Stankiewicz then joins the show to talk about how the Big Ten schedule, including the back-and-forth travel, has treated his team and how his players have handled and adjusted to the differences and challenges. He also discusses how the Trojans have tried to deal with a spate of injuries with multiple pitchers lost for the season as well as Takeuchi's shoulder issues. Stankiewicz then takes the listener through some strategic thought processes of how he tries to use late-inning opportunities in blowout games as well as how he handles his star players being in a funk, especially later in the season. The Trojan head man chats about Hedges, Lopez, Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek, Caden Hunter, Andrew Johnson, Jack Basseer and others. Shotgun and Kasey close out the show taking a look at where the Trojans stand after winning another series and taking a peek at where the Trojans could wind up in the postseason. The podcast then previews USC's upcoming week of action with the Trojans heading to Minneapolis to take on an injury-riddled Minnesota team that continues to battle despite 11 significant injuries, including five of the season-ending variety. The Spokesman-Review's Jim Meehan and Zag alum/TV broadcaster Richard Fox discuss all things Zags... spending a lot of time trying to figure out what is going on with the team as of late, focusing on the inconsistency in player performance and the need for a winning mindset. Also of note was the effectiveness of using a zone defense in upcoming games against Loyola Marymount and Pacific.
Zags enter a huge week after back-to back-losses to Oregon State and Santa Clara. Defense under fire, shakeups to the lineup, a lot to recap from an eventful few weeks in Zagville. We preview this week's games at home against Oregon State and on the road at St. Mary's. The Golden domers say farewell to the Irish. The Super Bowl is set. Jake likes his new coach and Coop is severely underwhelmed by his.
The Spokesman-Review's Jim Meehan and former Zag and TV Sportscaster, Richard Fox talk about all things GU basketball and how the team is finding their way ----While Gonzaga dropped out of the AP poll last week but improved from 19 to 16 in the NET rankings , despite only playing one game against a low-ranked opponent. The team had a challenging week with tough practices and player meetings to address recent losses. In GU's game against Portland, Gonzaga made lineup changes, starting Emmanuel Innocenti and Braden Huff, which resulted in a 43-point win. Upcoming games against Oregon State and St. Mary's, which will be important for Gonzaga's rankings and conference standing.
There's a LOT going on today. MLK Day, Presidential Inauguration, CFP National Championship, and - you guessed it - beaucoup college basketball reaction! We got Matt Norlander back in the chair to break down the happenings from this past weekend, starting with a gauge on the Big Ten hoops scene; the good (Michigan State), the bad (Mick Cronin's press conferences), and the ugly (Indiana's soon-to-be head coaching search). ACC was spicy on Saturday, including UNC's embarrassing home loss, SMU's beatdown, and a huge next couple of weeks for the Deacs. SEC, Big East, and Big 12 are also covered, plus whatever is happening in Spokane with a Zags team that is coming off an 0-2 week. There are official CFP score predictions for tonight's big game in Atlanta, which Hartzell doesn't think is going to be very competitive, and Norlander has a bold prediction on the winner (and the score).
