Tonight's Jazz Feature is an atypical recording by multi-instrumentalist/composer Jimmy Giuffre. He had been mostly associated with "West Coast Jazz" or "Cool Jazz", a style prominent in the 1950's that combined tight arrangements with Jazz solos. Giuffre in 1958 had gigged with his "folk Jazz" trio in New York and while there he was impressed with the harder, more emotionally outgoing Jazz of Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and returned to L.A. where he was based a bit of a changed man as he wanted to be more outgoing and emotional in his playing. He had great technique on his horns, clarinet and tenor saxophone and changed his approach. Hence tonight's recording which is a quartet date with minimal arrangements and featuring Giuffre on his two horns backed by a solid rhythm section with the great Jimmy Rowles on piano, Red Mitchell on bass and Lawrence aka Larence Marable on drums. The album is a mix of standards and original simple compositions by Giuffre. It all adds up to a fine date representing a different approach to the music by a very talented man who left an amazing legacy of music of many styles. The Jimmy Giuffre Four: "Ad Lib" should be a treat for your ears.

We end Part 2 by talking about his conducting career... how he got started, and his work with the Irish Chamber Orchestra.Dorico Professional music notation and composition software from Steinberg. Jörg Widmann is also recognized as an internationally acclaimed clarinet soloist, so we begin the Bonus Room by talking about that aspect of his career. We also discuss further how he balances his schedule between composing, clarinet, and conducting (spoiler alert... he really doesn't!), and then we talking about a number of different subjects, such as different national styles of composing, poetry and literature, and performing on period instruments. We conclude our discussion by going back to the beginning of it... combining curiosity with doubt, as they both can point to the future.Dorico Professional music notation and composition software from Steinberg. Jörg Widmann is one of the most versatile and fascinating classical artists in the world today. He is one of the world's most recognized modern composers, with premiers by major orchestras around the world. He has also appeared as a clarinet soloist with many of the world's top ensembles. As a conductor, he was the Music Director of the Irish Chamber Orchestra for ten years. His body of work is amazing, so I wanted to find out... how has he been able to accomplish so much in such a short time? He was gracious enough to take time out of his very busy schedule to speak with me.A defining quality for Jörg is his curiosity. He talks about how this curiosity began in his childhood. While discussing his curiosity and studies at Juilliard, we fall into the subject of German vs. French clarinet systems. We then use three pieces to discuss in depth how he approaches composition: His massive oratorio ARCHE, his Ad Absurdum, written for trumpeter Sergei Nakariakov, and finally, the Trumpet Concerto he wrote for Håkan Hardenberger. Jörg also talks about the similarities in his mind between Miles Davis... and Pierre Boulez.Dorico Professional music notation and composition software from Steinberg. From a childhood that included moving seven times throughout the midwest, to eventually making her home in Lancaster County, the incredibly talented and thoughtful Elizabethtown College instructor Faith Shiffer shares her story of how she fell in love with the clarinet in 4th grade and never looked back. The clarinet, which has remained a constant throughout her life, has taken her from the beginnings of playing on a metal instrument handed down from her Uncle to playing national tours for Sunday in the Park with George, Chicago and South Pacific. Throughout our wide-ranging conversation, we talked not only about her touring experience, falling in love with her future husband (trombonist Steve Shiffer) in a "pit" of all places (!) but also how she manages the stress of sometimes having 70-hour work weeks and gives great tips on how other musicians can do the same. Ultimately, though, Faith has found that the actual sharing of music has become the most fulfilling aspect of being a performer. Throughout this beautiful conversation we agreed that it is not only sharing music with others, but it is also the support we give each other as musicians that is so vital to our well-being. Thank you to Faith for her insight and sharing her life...between the notes.

San-Diego born and raised, Navy veteran Harley Pasiderio is a Southwest Airlines First Officer and Gold Seal Flight Instructor. He is also President and Founding Member of a nonprofit called Professional Asian Pilots Association. Also known as PAPA, it isdedicated to inspiring individuals to look past the barriers and encourage the pursuit of a career they wouldn't otherwise consider. As a kid with dreams to work as an airline pilot, Harley didn't realize how company culture or work environment would matter so much and PAPA is helping to improve that culture. Harley remembers taking his first flight in the third grade. He traveled to the Philippines, which is where his parents are from. The short haul flight from San Diego to Los Angeles, where his family made the international connection, solidified his dream. Growing up, Harley was fortunate enough to attend Morse High School, which had an aeronautics program that offered flight lessons and ground school. Harley had his first flying lesson at just 14 years old! As a pastime, Harley was also Principle Clarinetist for the San Diego Young Artist Symphony Orchestra and a Clarinetist for the San Diego Youth Symphony's Wind Ensemble. After Harley graduated high school, he served his Country by joining the Navy where he would eventually become a Nuclear Reactor Operator and then Nuclear Power Instructor for the Navy.
