The highly renowned classical clarinetist, David Singer, has performed many times at Carnegie Hall. He was a principal member and soloist with the Grammy Award-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra for 36 years and is featured on many of the group's 70 CDs on Deutsche Grammophon. David began with Orpheus when the group was playing for free. He has played with many of the world's greatest classical musicians, including legends like Yehudi Menuhin, Itzhak Perlman, Rudolf Serkin, and Yo-Yo Ma among others.David has also performed at the White House with Music from Marlboro and The Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society for Presidents Carter and Clinton.  David's recently published memoir, From Cab Driver to Carnegie Hall, is more than a musician's autobiography; its inspiring narrative will resonate with anyone who has faced life's challenges head-on. It's an ode to the power of never giving up while giving oneself every chance to succeed. I've read David's book and found it to be a fascinating, uplifting reflection of a life in music that's been full of challenges, triumphs, and the transformative power of music. If you enjoy stories about artists succeeding despite difficult obstacles, I highly urge you to read David's entertaining memoir.

Klezmer music may have its roots in the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe, but it found a home here in NY in the 1920s and 30s, and the klezmer revival that began almost a half century ago was also centered in New York. Clarinetist Michael Winograd has been a major figure on the klezmer music scene for a couple of decades now, both as a composer and as a kind of music historian. His current project is a remake of a 1955 album that flopped at the time and is now considered a classic meeting of klezmer and jazz. That album was called Tanz!, Yiddish for dance, and Michael Winograd leads a stellar lineup of musicians to play some of the tunes, in-studio. 1. Then Rich Lowry, editor of National Review, joins to discuss why Trump is taking a “traditional American approach” to foreign policy with his Venezuela actions, the argument that his saber-rattling is all just about putting America in the best position possible, Mayor Zohran Mamdani's new tenant director's insane views on property ownership, her outlandish targeting of "white" people, and more. The Jazz Feature: Saxophonist/clarinetist Jimmy Giuffre: "Ad Lib"

CiTR -- The Jazz Show

Tonight's Jazz Feature is an atypical recording by multi-instrumentalist/composer Jimmy Giuffre. He had been mostly associated with "West Coast Jazz" or "Cool Jazz", a style prominent in the 1950's that combined tight arrangements with Jazz solos. Giuffre in 1958 had gigged with his "folk Jazz" trio in New York and while there he was impressed with the harder, more emotionally outgoing Jazz of Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and returned to L.A. where he was based a bit of a changed man as he wanted to be more outgoing and emotional in his playing. He had great technique on his horns, clarinet and tenor saxophone and changed his approach. Hence tonight's recording which is a quartet date with minimal arrangements and featuring Giuffre on his two horns backed by a solid rhythm section with the great Jimmy Rowles on piano, Red Mitchell on bass and Lawrence aka Larence Marable on drums. The album is a mix of standards and original simple compositions by Giuffre. It all adds up to a fine date representing a different approach to the music by a very talented man who left an amazing legacy of music of many styles. The Jimmy Giuffre Four: "Ad Lib" should be a treat for your ears.
