We'll be back to your regularly-scheduled music interviews next week! For now, enjoy a panel I moderated at this year's [Manitoba Podcast Festival](https://www.facebook.com/mbpodfest/), which was held virtually due to the pandemic. It's a conversation with Cupcake and Rae Rae of the [2 Baked Girls Potcast](http://YouTube.com/2BakedGirlsPotcast), talking about the ins and outs of video podcasting, as well as their experience digging deep into the topic of their favourite plant. There's a lot of ‘inside baseball' on this one about podcasting – but I think it's of interest to Witchpolice listeners as well. Huge thanks to everyone who supports the podcast on [Patreon](http://www.patreon.com/witchpolice). You can help out for as little as $1 a month if you like the show and want to throw some change in the guitar case!

We're almost at the end (mercifully) of 2020, so here's something fun to close out the year. It's a panel I moderated at this year's Manitoba Podcast Festival, which was held virtually due to the pandemic. The panel featured Ryan McMahon (Thunder Bay, Red Man Laughing), alongside Keith and Greg from Unscripted Moments: A Podcast About Propagandhi. There's a lot of 'inside baseball' on this one about podcasting -- the topic is growing and developing an audience -- but I think it's of interest to Witchpolice listeners as well. Back to your regularly-scheduled programming next week! Happy New Year! Huge thanks to everyone who supports the podcast on Patreon. On The Road Episode! Because you have asked for it, Seanorama is on the road. And to prove how dynamic the show can be in this format, two incidents happen during the Podcast at (8:44) and (13:36). We provide a Manitoba Podcast Festival update (this was recorded between Day one and Day Two of the Festival) (1:04), when my Manitoba accent kicks in (3:48), and the device I am using at home to record podcasts: the Behringer 302USB (5:20). What are your September struggles through COVID and back to school? Seanorama covers his own (7:12). The release of Mulan on Video On Demand with Disney + gets Seanorama riled up about American Regionalism hoodwinking people on the actual price of the rental. Reunited with a few of my former bandmates in late ‘90s Winnipeg ska band [Grandpa's Army](http://witchpolice.blogspot.com/2009/04/every-grandpas-army-song-ever.html)! The band played its ‘last' show 20 years ago next month (we did a reunion show a couple years later), and getting together after all these years was a blast. It's a ridiculous conversation about a band that was never as good as its own hype, featuring Alex Seville (keyboards), Goldwyn Millar (drums), Johnny Perrin (vocals), Doug Feaver (bass), Erica Jacobson (trumpet), James Requeima (tenor sax), Morgan Jones (trombone), and me (guitar)! This episode brought to you by the Gumshoe Strut's new [Heartbeat EP](http://thegumshoestrut.bandcamp.com/album/heartbeat-ep) on Saskatoon Folk Rap Records. Local Metis folk singer [Riel](http://www.instagram.com/this_is_riel/) -- formerly known as [A Rebel Named Riel](http://witchpolice.com/e/wr317-a-rebel-named-riel-36992bdcad863c/) -- is on the show to talk all about his new solo persona, more emotional songwriting, upcoming new music, and much more! We also touch on his rewarding (musical) day job, as well as Manitoba's Indigenous music scene! Because his new stuff is coming out imminently, but isn't quite ready yet, we didn't include any of the songs on the episode, which means it's a bit shorter than usual, but it's a really fun chat -- and the songs are worth the wait, based on the previews he shared with me. Winnipeggers might know Drew Wolitarsky best for his work on the football field as a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, but he’s spending this pandemic-induced time off from being a pro athlete to hone his musical chops. We talked about the disconnect some people might encounter hearing a football player baring his soul as a deeply personal singer-songwriter, about his love for Winnipeg (he’s about to spend his first winter here), his curbside gigs, and much more. Note: I recorded this call in a different room than usual, which is why my side of the conversation is slightly shittier, audio-wise, than you're used to. Definitely doesn't ruin the quality of the chat, though! Fuzzed-out, country-tinged grunge devotees Big Foot Yeti are back with a new record, so here's a new interview with frontman Paul Pilgrim. BFY is back with their creatively-titled second EP Sept. 1. At this year's [Manitoba Podcast Festival](http://www.facebook.com/mbpodfest/), I moderated a panel with [Precursor Productions](http://www.precursorproductions.com/) about the more technical side of recording. The panel was a hit, so I sat down and recorded - in their studio - an interview with Precursor's Andrew Yankiwski and Paul Blandford, all about the studio biz, recording bands, the way the music industry has changed over the years, and much more. This episode brought to you by our friends at [the Park Theatre](http://www.myparktheatre.com/)!

Seanorama is on the road with a short Pod talking about Thanksgiving and the fall snowstorm that hit Winnipeg. He makes a plea to Podbean. Then he follows up with an addendum to the new local Podcasts he is listening to by covering the ones that were already on his playlist before the 2nd Manitoba Podcast Festival. Take a listen to Witchpolice Radio, Primarily Critical, Beaver Does Beaver, The Super Pulp Science Podcast, Creative Conundrums, Paper Cuts, The Winnipeg Music Project, and This Ain't Babysittin. He takes home his book from Staples. A Truly great moment. Welcome to our first Reel Talk Episode. Whats Reel Talk? Simply put, it's the conversation we get into while producing the show that dosen't have a home to live for eternity on the internets. You'll be getting interviews, trivia, some good ol' Top 10's and a few other segments that will show up now and again. Our first episode was recorded live at The Park Theatre in Winnipeg on September 29th at the Manitoba Podcast Festival. We got to sit down with a ton of local podcasters and talk shop but specifically we got to argue with Nick Bueno from Winnipeg Finest Podcast and Denzel Leblanc from Wesley Studios and argue super powers, cult films and the price of action figures. Special thanks to the staff at The Park Theatre and to the podcasts Thick and Sweaty, Kojb Films and Witch Police Radio for putting it on Email [thereeldebaters@gmail.com](mailto:thereeldebaters@gmail.com) Instagram @reeldebaters Twitter @reeldebaters

Seanorama and FastFretFingers are fresh from the 2nd annual Manitoba Podcast Festival. Their mission this year was to meet as many podcasters as possible and spreading the word of their own show. In this episode, we not only cover the Festival itself and it's two panels, but we committed to listening to a bunch of new local Podcasts (to us anyway). We review each one of these new ones. (Don't worry, we will have another follow up episode on the old dogs we've been listening to for a while now). If you haven't been covered in this episode, we will listen to you! On Sept. 29, we held our second annual [Manitoba Podcast Festival](http://www.facebook.com/mbpodfest/) at the Park Theatre. This year's event was a big success, in part, because of the networking format we set up, which allowed podcasters, listeners, and everyone else to meet and share with local creators in every possible genre. This episode is a compilation of some of the conversations I had over the course of the afternoon with some of the participants, including (in chronological order): [Travelling Minds](http://libbyj.ca/podcast/), [Echo Podcast](http://www.echopodcast2019.com/), [2 Baked Girls](http://2bakedgirls.org/), [Thick & Sweaty](http://thicknsweaty.podbean.com/), [Koj-B Films](http://www.kojbfilms.com/), [This Ain't Babysittin'](http://www.facebook.com/thisaintbabysittin/), [Beaver Does Movies](http://beaverdoesmovies.wixsite.com/beaverdoesmovies), and CKUW's [Behind the Curtain](http://ckuw.ca/programs/detail/behind-the-curtain). These, of course, were only a few of the many podcasters at the event, and we're hoping to build on the festival's momentum with events throughout the year. yo, shit we talk about: the 2nd annual Manitoba Podcast Festival - shena has us play the newlywed game - stefan will be paintballing kids at his son's birthday party - prime rib - and a fun thanksgiving story to close it out
In the late '90s, I played in a ska band called [Grandpa's Army](http://www.witchpolice.com/2009/04/every-grandpas-army-song-ever.html), and my old friend Alex Seville was the keyboard player. Alex has been living in San Francisco for the past few years, where he's not playing music, but is – in a turn surprising to anyone who knew him in Winnipeg – participating in freestyle rap-based improv. We talk about all of that, plus the weird creative projects we did back in the day (including a [documentary about Grandpa's Army](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoMrwRIHrhk&list=PL7AAE58E5EC81BEB4)) that - in a roundabout way - eventually led to me doing this podcast. Songs on this episode: Grandpa's Army - "Train to Hicksville" Grandpa's Army - "The Land of Nod" (both live recordings) A Auspicii - "Boris" (weird backwards thing we did) Jesse Matas feat. Confucious tha Ruthless - Rolling in the Juicebox (recorded by Alex) This episode is brought to you by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/), who are hosting the second annual [Manitoba Podcast Festival](http://www.facebook.com/mbpodfest) Sept. 29. It's also brought to you by MCMA Award-nominated country artist [Brian Jacobs](http://brianjacobsmusic.ca/), whose debut solo record '[Highways and Backroads](http://https://brianjacobs.bandcamp.com/album/highways-backroads)' is available now!

Capital-F folk duo [The New Customs](http://www.thenewcustoms.com/) are set to release their new LP, Selling Religion on Government Street in early October, so we hung out at a Tim Hortons near the airport for a podcast. Dale and Emma have been hustling hard at this acoustic storytelling business for a number of years now, and their indie-folk sound reflects the genre's ins and outs, including its ability to put across a a serious political message with a mellow backing. Check 'em out [Oct. 3 at The Park Theatre](http://www.thenewcustoms.com/shows/srogs-cd-release) for a hometown release show before they take their show on the road and present the new record to audiences across the country. It's hard to think of a better or more eclectic lineup. ...and go out and grab the debut record by new local metal fusion band [Book of Ghosts](http://www.instagram.com/bookofghostsofficial), which dropped everywhere Aug. 27!
Local punks [Yer Mum](http://yermum.bandcamp.com/releases) reminded me of just how much *fun* punk rock can be, and how much I miss playing in a band with this amount of energy and ridiculousness. It's a really fun conversation about skateboarding, drinking, touring, dogs and more, recorded at “The Whorehouse"... plus some live performances! This episode is brought to you by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/), who are hosting the second annual [Manitoba Podcast Festival](http://www.facebook.com/mbpodfest) Sept. 29. It's also brought to you by [Trevor Fisher](http://www.linkedin.com/in/fishertrevor) of Way2Wealth Management, a local Certified Financial Planner who can help you start planning your financial independence. I spent some time with an absolute legend for this episode. Iconic reggae artist [Luciano](http://lucianomessenjah.com/) was in town, live and direct from Jamaica, for a performance Aug. 23 at the Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain. Although I had [interviewed Luciano four or five years ago](http://witchpolice.podiant.co/e/3519538383436eL/), that was over the phone, and this was my first time meeting The Messenger in person. He's an artist with an unbelievably deep catalogue and international acclaim, but he's down-to-earth enough to hang out in a coffee shop for a podcast interview – and to get into some deep thoughts as well. This episode is brought to you by our friends at [The Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/), who are presenting this year's Manitoba Podcast Festival on Sept. 29! Ever since I discovered the weird world of the [Famous Sandhogs](http://thefamoussandhogs.bandcamp.com/) a few years back, I've been curious about its anonymous creator's identity and motives behind the project. We come a little closer on this episode (but no spoilers, I still don't know who he actually is). It's an interview over the phone, in which we talk about his vast catalogue, the deep levels of research and mythology, his recent (masked, of course) live show, and more. If you're looking for an entry point to the Sandhogs universe, it's hard to find something better than [*Paris Green*](http://thefamoussandhogs.bandcamp.com/album/paris-green), a full-fledged, choose-your-own-adventure style board game in album form. Seanorama and FastFretFingers discuss Manitoba podcasts and the upcoming festival in 2019. The boys had a meeting with the organizers and share their thoughts on the meeting, the stae of podcasts in Winnipeg, the local Podcast scene, their thoughts on YouTube, and how to find your new favorite podcast. They also delve into (yet again) 7 Days to Die and the greatness of the game, and another talk on World of Warcraft. #manitobapodcastfestival #7daystodie #worldofwarcraft Support this podcast

It's a conversation about soul, folk, boisterous lyrics and much more with three core members of musical collective [House Handshake](http://www.facebook.com/househandshake/). We talk about their circuitous, bi-provincial route to becoming a band, their elaborately planned-out recording and release plans, and everything else under the sun. This episode brought to you by our friends at the [Park Theatre](http://myparktheatre.com/), who recently hosted the inaugural Manitoba Podcast Festival. Huge thank you to everyone who participated, watched from the audience, or introduced themselves and their own podcasts to us in the intermission. Something special happened today. Seanorama and FastFretFingers attended the Manitoba Podcast Festival on International Podcast Day. We met some great people, learned some stuff, found out that the local community of podcasts is much bigger than everyone could hope and finally got to meet Sam from Witchpolice Radio. Take a listen and find out what we found. #manitobapodcastfestival #internationalpodcastday And take a listen to some great local podcasts. On Facebook @mbpodfest I came into this only knowing this one: Witchpolice Radio – Interviews with bands and artists from the local music scene, this one has long been a favorite. Sam's style is his own and has its own beats and quirks on the show that really make it a great show. https://witchpolice.podiant.co/ And I am downloading episodes of all of these right now: The Winnipeg Music Project – Something about Ashley's story and how she came about learning to perform music through the podcast was inspiring. I love doing the things I fear the most so her story really resonated with me. http://winnipegmusicproject.com/ Ever Sick! Podcast – Stefan has something going for him --- he has a timing and that IT factor. The guy could probably read a phonebook and make it funny. https://www.spreaker.com/show/ever-sick-podcast-with-stefan-richard Paper Cut Podcast – Got a chance to chat with Liv --- I liked the approach their show takes to interviewing the people you don't usually hear from. And they are fans of TicketMomster which is enough in my books. http://papercutwinnipeg.com/ Past Bedtime Studio – Met these people in the audience and had a great chat. Love the idea behind the podcast: audio-drama. Great guys! http://www.pastbedtimestudio.com/ There were more that I don't have the names handy and may not have been able to find. To anyone I spoke with, please send me your info so I can continue to promote your material on the show.

Singer-songwriter [Harley James Flett](http://harleyjamesflett.bandcamp.com/releases) may have packed up and moved to Toronto, but he maintains his Winnipeg DIY sensibilities. Best known as a folk-punk artist, he's working on new material for a November release that leans more toward alt-country territory. Silence Kit is (are?) back! The local grungy foursome are about to release a powerhouse new record, "Kitty Kitty" (seriously, it's great, I've heard it), on Oct. 5. It's a quick lunch-hour chat with singer-songwriter Daniel Emerson, frontman of [A Rebel Named Riel](http://www.facebook.com/pg/arebelnamedriel/). We talk about his artistic roots in the Thompson, MB, hip-hop community, the way his Metis cultural background influences his music, that big-ass Louis Riel hand tattoo, and much more! It's an interview with up-and-coming alt/indie-rock trio [Big Foot Yeti](http://www.facebook.com/BFYWPG/) (the space is intentional)! Folk-rockers[ Kakagi](http://www.kakagimusic.com/) (well, half of them, anyway) sit down for a conversation about fitting in with the local scene, touring anxiety, their fantastic new EP, and much more! It seems strange that singer-songwriter [Joe Curtis](http://www.joecurtisband.com/) hasn't formally been on the podcast until now. I interviewed him for an [episode of 'Mom's House'](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_ONZ5PILn8), plus he performed an acoustic set at a recent show in my backyard, but this marks his first sit-down Witchpolice interview. We talk about his long career as a sideman, his inspirations as a solo artist, some of the new music he's working on, and much more. Creative exploration, space cats and more, with instrumental tech-metal trio [Aphelion](http://aphelion204.bandcamp.com/)! This episode's guest is a bit of mystery. The writer known as [Ticketmomster](http://www.facebook.com/TicketMOMsters) has been penning anonymous, fly-on-the-wall style pieces about a wide range of Winnipeg concerts for some time now, and she's thus far managed to hold on to her secret identity. We don't drop any big hints during this interview, but we do discuss Ticketmomster's choice of remaining anonymous, her unique -- and untrained -- storytelling style, her favourite local artists, and much more! Last time Jeremy Haywood-Smith was on the podcast, he was covering songs by other local artists at a live event we were hosting. Now we're sitting down (in the food court) to talk about his own music and the part-band/part-solo project/all-encompassing moniker [JayWood](http://jaywood1.bandcamp.com/). Having returned from Sled Island and unexpectedly finding himself bandless, Jeremy has refocused his efforts on the experimental, dreamy indie-pop of his solo work, with a full-length LP on the way in the not-so-distant future. Local superproducer [Crabskull](http://crabskull.bandcamp.com/) is someone I've wanted to talk to on the podcast for a long time. Between his work with Winnipeg hip-hop luminaries like 3Peat and Charlie Fettah, his cassette label ([Fab Itch Tapes](http://thefabulousitchcassetteco.bandcamp.com/)), and his psychedelic, sci-fi solo productions, he's behind some of the most original music the city has heard in years. We talk about his vast archive of beats, the inspirations for some of his more out-there stuff, and much more! Thanks to everyone who has supported the podcast thus far. Post-grunge...from Arborg? Alt-rock five-piece [Northern Royals](http://northernroyals.com/) hang out for a backyard chat about (some of the members') rural roots, their newly refined lineup, the direction their music has taken since their previous incarnation (The Autopilots), and much more! If you like the show, please head down to [patreon.com/witchpolice](http://www.patreon.com/witchpolice), and for as little as $1 a month, you can help keep the lights on! This episode is brought to you by our friends at the [Park Theatre](http://www.myparktheatre.com/), who have a whole calendar of great upcoming shows. Check it out on their website for more details! ...and speaking of the Park, be sure to check out the inaugural [Manitoba Podcast Festival](http://www.facebook.com/events/2188824571388548/), happening there Sept. 30!
