This week on The Reel Debaters Podcast Micheal and Charles invite Graphic Artist Stephanie Guest on the show to review Heartbreakers, Superstore, The Penguin, The Substance, Blink Twice and fan cast her current novel I Used To Be A Magical Girl Starring Micheal PetrowCharles FernandesStephanie Guest My name is Steph and I'm currently located in Winnipeg, Canada. I've been drawing ever since I was 9 years old. I used to pause my VHS tapes of Sailor Moon and Pokemon and try to copy what I saw. When I was a teenager I had aspirations of moving to Japan and becoming a manga artist, like so many young weebs do. I started Designs by Saka in 2018. I had recently started collecting enamel pins centered around One Direction. There were a lot of options available for Harry Styles, but not many for Niall Horan. I figured I could draw some myself, so I dusted off my old tablet and rediscovered my love for art. Her bona fides for this episode include writing for a local video production company, and crying so hard she has thrown up. Her work has included features in CBC, The Uniter, and The Winnipeg Free Press. In 2024, she was featured as a grief expert in CBC Gem's, Finding Diamonds. She did her first Feis this month as a beginner and came in third place for Light Jig among 11 other kids. We were pretty excited. Before the Feis, I had a LOT of questions. I was not raised on Irish dance. I really know nothing about it. So last month, I contacted Emma Burke of Atlanta Irish Dance to find out more. Emma Burke was born in Dublin, Ireland and grew up in Atlanta. She is a former litigation attorney in the area and a classically trained flautist. Now she is co - founder of Atlanta Irish dance and is a certified Irish dance teacher and internationally certified Irish dance adjudicator, which allows her to judge Irish dance competitions world wide. During her Irish dancing career, Emma competed all over the world, winning titles throughout. Emma is also a four time Southern Region Champion, consistently placed top 5 in the North American Nationals, and competed in the World Championships of Irish dance many times where her highest placement was 13th, earning her a coveted World Medal. I asked her to tell me more about Irish dance. 41:52 - WHAT IS IRISH DANCE? Since I also wanted to know what to expect at a Feis, I asked Emma what a Feis is and what happens at a Burke Connolly Feis. I'll let her tell you more about it. 45:51 - MORE ABOUT BURKE CONNOLLY FEIS If you want to learn more about Irish dance, the instruments they play and the types of dances they do, make sure you join us on Patreon. Selcouth means, “when everything is strange and different, yet you find it marvelous anyway.” The album is not completely Celtic and it's not just science fiction and fantasy. Welcome to a weird experiment! This isn't a typical episode of Witchpolice Radio. For this one, we hosted a secret show, featuring a live interview and performance with local Friday night bath music quartet [Lounge FM](http://loungefm.bandcamp.com/). The whole thing played out in front of an audience of about 10 people in an intimate little room (shoutout [Giant Skellies](http://soundcloud.com/giant-skellies)!) and it was a blast. As noted in the intro, the interview portion of this episode is pretty lo-fi, but it gave us some good ideas on how to improve it if we do more secret shows in the future. The music, of course, sounds great. This epsiode was brought to you by our friends at the [SUNWOLF](http://thesunwolflabel.com/) label, who are releasing the debut by Katie & the Wolves March. 22, as well as by Winnipeg's own [Death Cassette](http://deathcassettemusic.bandcamp.com/releases), who are performing at the Handsome Daughter on Feb. 23. Thanks to everyone who has supported the podcast thus far. Thanks to supporters like you, we can keep churning out interviews twice a week! If you like the show, please head down to [patreon.com/witchpolice](http://patreon.com/witchpolice) and for as little as a $1 month (less than 12 cents an episode), you can help keep the lights on!

Three members of the city's newest soul merchants,[ Last Chance Gang](http://www.facebook.com/lastchancegang), are on the podcast to talk about their new group, breathing new life into an old sound, and adding a Winnipeg flavour to get-on-yer-feet R&B! They don't have any official releases yet, nor have they played many shows, but the band – which includes veterans of the local music scene – have made a few excellent [live demo recordings](http://lastchancegang.bandcamp.com/album/last-chance-gang), which you can hear on the podcast. 23. His first appearance was at the beginning of 2014, but has a long history with us that pre-dates the podcast. Greg's old bands (Lacking Intelligence, later High Five Drive) played plenty of shows with our shitty bands as far back as the late '90s. Since 2011 or so, Greg has gone the solo acoustic route and he has engaged in non-stop touring. When we arrived at his house to do the interview, he had literally just come off the road minutes earlier after a 30-hour drive back to Winnipeg from Las Vegas! On this episode, Greg talks about his reputation as a road warrior, about his solid new record, Sibling Cities (which will be released at The Handsome Daughter this Friday if you're in Winnipeg) and about what the future holds for an old punk in a young man's game. If you notice an additional voice chiming in here and there, that's Paul, who was hanging out during the interview.

...so when we told Union Stockyards they were welcome back on the show any time they wanted, we didn't think it was going to be so soon! Our favourite local punks (last heard on episode #199) jumped at the chance to promote their upcoming show with brand-new locals Agapito (featuring current or former members of Cancer Bats, The Duhks and Stockyards themselves) on Dec. 29 at The Handsome Daughter. We packed most of Stockyards and Agapito into a jamspace and recorded a pretty out-of-control gong-show of an episode... with a twist. This one was filmed as well!

Earlier this month, we returned to The Handsome Daughter for a live Q&A panel on concert photography featuring some of Winnipeg's finest behind the camera: Dwayne Larson, Joey Senft, Jenny Ramone and Travis Ross. The well-attended show included a photo display in the venue, questions from the audience and some real insight into what the show-photo gig entails. Huge thanks to the Daughter, our panelists and the great audience.

Every year around this time, we head down to UMFM's studio to record a live on-air episode in support of the station's Pledge-O-Rama fundraiser. We've done it every year since 2013, but this year we ran into a conflict. Our scheduled live episode was the same night as our live Shoot First, Ask Questions Later event onstage at the Handsome Daughter ...so instead of a live episode, we aired (last Sunday) a clip show, essentially. We're calling it a "mixtape" because -- similar to last year's "mixtape" episode -- it's basically a compilation of some of the live performances we've had on the show over the past year. This certainly isn't a full document of the 2016 performances, though. There are a number of excellent live tunes that didn't fit due to time restrictions (and you can check those out here).

Our original plan may have fallen through, but we still came out of Kerry, MB, with a solid podcast from Shine On Festival of Music and Art. Initially, we were supposed to be presenting a live podcast on the side stage -- similar to what we've done at the Handsome Daughter in the past -- on Saturday morning at the festival. For a variety of reasons -- everything from guests still being asleep to hornets besieging the stage -- that didn't quite work out. Instead, we got some excellent field recording-style interviews (literally in a field) with Shine On performers such as None the Wiser's Eli Matas, Micah Erenberg, and Roger Roger ...not to mention a backstage interview and rehearsal recording of Raine Hamilton and her string quartet.

If you're a regular listener to this podcast, you may have heard an episode we did earlier this year with Dwayne Larson, a Winnipeg concert photographer who also blogs about music on It's A Music Thing. Dwayne does a lot of great interviews with touring bands, so we're teaming up with him to present some of those on our podcast, and hopefully Dwayne will be involved in some regular episodes and other Witchpolice projects in future. To kick off his contributions to the podcast, here's an interview he did with Ryan Dahle of Limblifter when they were in town for a show at the Handsome Daughter last month. They talk about Limblifter's new album, the band's longevity, Ryan's other projects, like Age of Electric and Mounties ...and a lot more.

We kicked off 2016 with a bang at Winnipeg's Handsome Daughter with our second (of what will hopefully be many) live podcast in front of an audience. For our "Holiday Hangover" show Jan. 3, we hung out with ukulele-slinger Erin Shorten, country singer's country singer Quinton Blair and psychedelic organ magician Smoky Tiger. Each of our guests performed three songs and sat down for a conversation! Thanks to the Daughter for having us (again) at their venue, thanks to Garbage Hill Media for making the show happen, and special thanks to Rob and Ted of Loose Fit DJs, who entertained before and after the show proper.

On Sept. 27, we pulled out all the stops for our first-ever (and hopefully first of many) live onstage podcast. The show, celebrating our milestone 150th episode, featured interviews and live performances with old friends and collaborators Rob Crooks, Nestor Wynrush, Country Steve and first-time guest Mona Mousa. Although the turnout wasn't record-breaking, the crowd more than made up for it in volume and enthusiasm. We certainly hustled to get the word out about this event, with coverage from local newspapers The Metro, The Uniter and a number of campus radio interviews leading up to the big night. Huge thanks to everyone who came out and supported. It was a blast. We can't wait to do more live and direct events in future!

We had three-quarters of the band in the Blanket Fort to talk about the randomly-generated "buzz" theme, which is fitting, considering the attention this band is (deservedly) getting lately for their keyboard-heavy, punk and folk-informed rock sound.
