Supernova International Ska Festival started in 2013 as a house show that got so big, it was moved to a local brewery. Though it took a few years before it got the name Supernova, and that first show wasn't even a festival; just a kick-ass show with Chris Murray and King Django. Every year, Supernova has grown. 2023 is looking to be the biggest and best version of the festival to date with acts from all over the world like Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Fishbone, The Dualers, Don Letts, Stranger Cole, The Planet Smashers, Catbite, Out Of Control Army, and so much more. Today we talk about all things Supernova with co-founder Tim Receveur (He founded the festival with his wife April) and creative director Mike DeMatteo. We talk about the festival's history and dig into what people can expect at this year's festival. We also chat about some fun stories from Supernova's previous festivals. And there are plenty of fun stories there! We talk about Derrick Morgan's epic 2017 performance, 2020's quarantine edition (fundraiser for Alpha Boys School), and how Taylor Morden managed to film several interviews for Pick It Up - Ska In The 90s at the festival in 2018 during a storm. We also talk about Hepcat playing the festival (Their first east coast concert in decades!), the creation of the Rude Girl Revue and Tim lets us know how he managed to get Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra to headline this year's festival.   Support the show

Here's another throwback -- a re-release of one of the "lost" podcasts from 2014 -- an early Witchpolice recording that didn't get added to the current podcast feed. This one was originally released as #73, featuring Matt and Patrick of Montreal ska legends The Planet Smashers as our guests. Ignore what I say in the intro: this was ONE of our early attempts at interviewing an artist from out of town, but not the very first. I hope you dig it. It's in the show's old format, so if you're new to Witchpolice Radio, you're better off listening to a 2022 episode, but if you're looking for a fun throwback, here we are. ...and yes, that cover image is an accurate depiction of our recording setup back then. We did everything in the jamspace in then-co-host Jon's basement. The dryer in the background was a prominent feature. Here's what I said about it back in 2014: This week we talk to Matt and Patrick of the legendary Planet Smashers about their new record, their experiences as a ska band with 20 years of history, and this week's randomly-generated theme word: TERROR.Back to your regularly-scheduled programming next episode!

In this episode, Derik Hyatt chats with Mark Sanders, otherwise known as Mark Malibu of Mark Malibu & The Wasagas (@wasagas_surf).  Catching their 2nd wave, the Wasagas (www.thewasagas.com) are Canada's original Surf Punk Instrumentalists existing from 1979-1982. They were groovy teenagers living far from the west coast. They played with many new-wave and punk bands confusing audiences everywhere. It was not easy playing surf instrumental music when clubs wanted Black Sabbath, Black Flag or...any other band wearing black clothes with vocals. They did, however, manage to align with some other young bands around town and play the usual Toronto dives like the Turning Point, Larry's Hideaway, Cabana Room to name a few. They also managed to record 7 original songs which appeared on several Post Punk compilations distributed around the world. Back with a vengeance as they reunited in 2014 for several shows with all original members. That's 32 years later! The future promises to be interesting for these retro-fitted Wasagas. They signed with UK's Sharawaji Records and released three full length  LPs  "Return of the Wasagas" and "Crash Monster Beach" which entered the international surf charts at #1 and remained there for 6 weeks...and now "Dance Party a' Go Go" which has also reached #1 in the charts. Now a staple on the Canadian Rockabilly/Surf scene, there are many live shows coming to your town... Surfs Up again! In this episode, Derik Hyatt chats with pro surfer and “American Hoser”, Kevin Schulz!  Why a hoser?  Because this 26-year-old San Clementine has been made an honourary Canadian after falling in love with both Great Lakes and East Coast swell, along with its people, and of course Tim Horton's sour cream glazed donuts.  Though, being true to his American roots, he is also a bit of a cowboy, or more specifically an “air cowboy!”  Designed by Perfect Swell the people at American Wave Machines created the Freak of The Peak to launch surfers as high as possible with no resemblance of a normal wave nor does it mimic the ocean in anyway.  Kevin performed a backflip so casually at 2019 Stab High event in Waco, Texas during practice that was such a stand out that it was deemed the biggest air landed resulting in 10K award to Kevin. Other interesting facts about Team USA's Kevin Schulz: he loves coffee, rides goofyfoot, and has a Siberian Husky.  Be sure to watch Kevin's sick air at https://stabmag.com/stabcinema/kevin-schulz-takes-the-freak-peak-and-10k/. I know what you’re thinking: “Who the heck is Marcus Paladino?”  Well, he’s your cold-water king of surf photography. Through neoprene stiff fingers and frozen eyelids, Marcus is dedicated to capturing high-performance surfing on the west coast of Canada. He lives above 1/800th of a second, but isn’t afraid to slow things down. It’s sex, drugs and rock & roll, but also, it’s smooth jazz and a cup of tea. A habitual homebody just itching to get out of his comfort zone. Surfing is the reason he wakes up every morning.  He doesn’t matter. The endeavour of marathon swims in bone-chilling and heart-pounding conditions is irrelevant. What’s important to him lies in front of the lens. The split-second moments that most people don’t even know exist; capturing them forever instead of letting them pass by.  - Excerpt taken from www.marcuspaladino.com/about-marcus Connect with Marcus Paladino online at www.marcuspaladino.com, on Instagram at @marcuspaladino and on Facebook at @marcuspaladinophotography.  His film Waterspider can be viewed on Vimeo at https://vimeo.com/382856164 and Cold Comfort is available for pre-order and purchase on May 25, 2021 at Rocky Mountain Books.        This episode was recorded on April 15, 2021 and features coarse language.  Viewer discretion is advised. Before we start, feel free to support the podcast if you’ve been listening for a while by signing up for my Patreon for $1 and I will love you forever. Jump Start Records was born in a college dorm room first as a paper mailorder catalog and zine that quickly evolved into a vinyl 7″ release with Montreal’s The Planet Smashers. Twenty years and over 100 releases later, they’re still here, for better or for worse, fighting the good fight. While the focus and drive of the label has shifted greatly over the years, one thing has stayed true and that’s a personal connection with the music and a desire to work with their friends releasing music that they love. Times are tough, and being an independent record label in the year 2017 isn’t easy; getting people to pay attention to a small record label run out of a suburban Philadelphia basement is no easy task, but they hope you enjoy what you find as much as they enjoy introducing the world to bands and music they think people ought to know. They don’t give a fuck what bands you’ve played with, who you recorded with, or how many followers you have on social media. If they like it, they like it, and there’s not much else to say. It doesn’t matter if it’s punk, hardcore, ska, soul, hip-hop, or jazz, when the record needle hits you know it when you hear it. Shout out to Adam Fowler of the Overdrives for the intro to Jeremy. Neshaminy Creek Brewing  What he’s doing for the 25 year anniversary How did they stand out as a label Going on Warped Tour with Belvedere His love of LWL A Wilhelm Scream His thoughts on the Napster era Dealing with people Working with distributors The shit going on with Interpunk Trying to release an Animal Chin record And a ton more Go check out www.jumpstartrecords.com to see what they’re up to for the 25 year anniversary. Check out my new book The Couples' Checklist for my webcomic dailyBred. It's a great gift for Valentine's Day. If you market aggressively on Instagram Stories and want custom stickers then go here to get custom stickers or just email mike@drive80.com and I can send you samples. These are great for B2C companies and Realtors. Feel free to support the podcast for as little as $1 a month through Patreon Or go to thiswasthescene.com to possibly buy some merch.

During these somewhat dark COVID times, we can often be at risk of surrendering to the doom and gloom of isolation, boredom, and hopelessness; but in the spirit of Christmastime and the Holiday Season, allow yourself to be reminded by our youth that hope lies ahead in both the present and future.  In this episode, Derik Hyatt chats with Canadian female surfing prodigy, Mathea Olin.  Listen as this 17 year old pro surfer takes this 38 year old kook to school all hour long while she drops wisdom bombs about being yourself, keeping fun at the centre, inspiring others, staying stoked in trying times, training hard, loving what you do, having a growth mindset, and eating ice cream on the road to the Olympics. Mathea Olin was born on February 2, 2003 in Canmore, Alberta.  At six years old she and her family moved to Tofino, BC where she fell in love with surfing and began competing only four years later.  Her accolades include: winning Canada’s first ever international medals in surfing which included gold in longboard and bronze in shortboard at the 2017 Pan Am Surf Games; and bronze in longboard at the 2019 Pan Am Games.  Mathea’s aspirations include competing in the world Olympics and being the first Canadian to enter into the World Tour.  Keep your sights set on this Queen of the Peak; because as long as she froths for surf, she is bound to make Canadian Surfing Herstory! To connect with Mathea Olin, follow her on Instagram at @mathea_olin and be sure to watch Mathea And Paige Alms Experience The Wave-Riding Roots Of Haida Gwaii in Redbull’s short film Northern Tides at https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=-5Ukx5MzkJU&feature=youtu.be&linkId=77408384&fbclid=IwAR3sVT94UNTqModDTKkAD4LFQuXdD7LGg2YS7xHAdhxT4365B8NUNHbJXbA. Episode 38 of the ReadJunk Podcast is with Matt Collyer of the Canadian ska band The Planet Smashers and Stomp Records. I've been listening to the band since I've been listening to ska since 95/96. They have a new album coming out on May 10th called 'Too Much Information' and it's another awesome album that was added to their discography.  In this episode, we talk about their new album, the early days of the band, Stomp Records, New England Ska Fest, Canadian ska scene, Planet Smashers songs and music videos and yes, even a little bit of hockey.  You can listen to the episode on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, Google or wherever else you get podcasts. Be sure to visit ReadJunk.com for news, reviews, articles and other junk. Spread the word about the podcast and give us a nice review on iTunes too! Thank you for the support!

A killer rerun from 2004! It sorta kinda captures the madness of that week-long weirdness-fest, 7X-Day. This legendary gathering of the Saved in rural New York State was officiated by such luminaries as Dr. Philo Drummond, Colonel Sphinx Drummond, Dr. G. Gordon Gordon, Little Fyodor & Babushka, Rev. Susie the Floozie, The Swingin' Love Corpses, Popess Lilith, the young preaching prodigy Rev. Alex Thompson, and The Amino Acids; there was also a lot of great SubGenius radio commentary from Puzzling Evidence, Radio Synaesthesia and Lymph Node Institute. Most amazing is Acid Corps: the incestuous collaboration between The Swingin' Love Corpses and The Amino Acids! There's also a rare SubG song by The El Queso All-Stars about Prairie Squid, and The Planet Smashers doing "Porno Planet Orgy"! This show was assembled back when Stang's back would still let him sit at a desk for hours, editing and editing. Stang's back now insists otherwise.

My legacy. In this edition of the Wrestling House Show the Parts Unknown Crew attempts to find the positive among the negative... even if it has to be fabricated. They discuss many topics including their fear of Kozlov being released, the good and bad of Triple H booking his own matches and stipulations on the fly, how the WWE is leaving wrestlers at home and how that will affect them and the shows, the pointlessness of pretty much all titles going in to Wrestlemania, and how certain young wrestlers don't seem to be wrestling to the best of their ability. They go on to name a certain legend of the business that should actually be backing Jericho in his crusade, discuss how the graphic for the Diva Battle Royale spoiled what should have been a surprise, Joey puts on his booking hat to throw out an idea of how to get rid of Smackdown if the show gets cancelled, Michael wonders about Samoa Joe's Nation of Violence, chris is disappointed by Matt Morgan yet again, and they all react to Mick Foley back in action... again. All this plus more including listener email where they discover that people named Adam seem to like the show! Intro song: "Now is the Time" by Dope from the album "Group Therapy" Outro song: "Fabricated" by The Planet Smashers from the album "No Self Control" Both songs are available on iTunes Show them that podcasting sells records!
