Welcome to an audio-led edition of Unmade. Today we talk to Christian O'Connell about his plans to (sort of) take his radio show national. Plus a big fall for Seven West Media on the Unmade index. We've announced the schedule for this year's Compass series. Our panel-in-the-pub, end-of-year tour kicks off in Sydney on November 3 and concludes in Hobart a fortnight later. Reflecting on 2025 and projecting into 2026, please hold the date for your city:* November 3 – Compass Sydney* November 5 – Compass Brisbane* November 10 – Compass Adelaide* November 11 – Compass Perth* November 17 – Compass Melbourne* November 18 – Compass HobartUnmade's paying members get a free ticket to Compass. Your annual membership also gets you tickets to September's REmade conference on retail media; and to October's Unlock conference on marketing in the nighttime economy. And you also get access to our paywalled archive.Upgrade today. When is a radio show not really national? When it's on DABI have something of a confession. When I recorded this week's podcast with Christian O'Connell on Monday morning, I didn't have all the facts. When you listen, you'll hear me miss what is now an obvious question.ARN Media had just announced O'Connell's Melbourne-based Gold FM breakfast show was going live nationally. After last week's announcement that Brendan Jones and Amanda Keller were vacating their Gold FM Sydney breakfast show for a shift to drive, it was clear that O'Connell would be networking into both cities, but the national move was a surprise.I took the announcement at face value. The technical problem I focused on was that of the time difference.Depending on time of year, when the show kicks off in Melbourne at 6am, that would be 3am in Perth. Or 5am in Queensland. Or 5.30am in Adelaide. But the announcement was unequivocal (and, as I'll explain further down, misleading): “This is the first time a commercial radio breakfast show will go live across the country.”For a show that thrives on the conversation with callers, that would, I assumed, have to mean a longer show. Stay on air longer, until at least 11am Melbourne time perhaps, in order to be genuinely live. There's precedent for running long. Over on Kiis FM, stablemates Kyle Sandilands and Jackie Henderson usually stay well beyond their official finish time.Alternatively, as a half way house (and admittedly not properly live), shortly after 9am in Melbourne, record a bunch of talk breaks to cover the next two hours. The practicality of time zones is already a reality for broadcasters. The likes of ABC Radio National, and the TV networks, broadcast their shows as live, on a time delay. But when something big enough is breaking, they go fully live for their west coast audiences. But the assumption that I - and the rest of the industry - made was that ARN Media was planning to put The Christian O'Connell Show to air in each market on one of their existing stations. That had been the plan when ARN was looking to capture Triple M in its failed Southern Cross Austereo takeover bid.The new national plan was most intriguing in Perth where ARN's 96FM leads the market with a 14.8% audience share. However, 96FM is more closely aligned with ARN Media's Kiis network branding than Gold. ARN shares a second licence in the city with Nova Entertainment. And the existing 96FM breakfast show, featuring Dean Clairs and Lisa Shaw, underperforms compared to the rest of the station, sitting third in its time slot. Dropping in The Christian O'Connell Show would be a bold move but plausible. At the very least, with one licence in the market, ARN Media appeared to have selected O'Connell over the Kyle & Jackie O Show to lead its national networking strategy. To use the Formula One analogy, where each team has two drivers, ARN had chosen O'Connell as its number one driver. But the plan appeared anything but fully formed. As you'll hear O'Connell concede during the interview: “The Perth side, we're still working out the best way to do that. It might sound like ‘If you've been talking about this for seven years, why haven't you sorted that out?'”In truth, it's not going to be a national show. Or at least not on radios nationally. Outside of Sydney and Melbourne the show will be DAB only. Disingenuously, the word DAB did not appear in the announcement.Almost nobody listens to DAB. And for fans of O'Connell in other cities, they can already stream the show anyway.DAB ratings are so low that Commercial Radio Australia doesn't even publish the average listening numbers, only cumulative audience - the number of people who merely tune in at some point across the week. On DAB, the station 96FM 80s has a cume of just 61,000. That's compared to a cume for the main 96FM of 506,000. So why pretend the show is national when it is not? That's where ARN has made a hash of its communications. They were bounced into it after Jones and Keller decided to tell their listeners they were being moved to drive time. Reading between the lines, it's clear the duo would rather have stayed in breakfast. As O'Connell says in the interview: “Things have been jump started a bit. We were meant to be announcing this in a couple of weeks time.”ARN should have waited until it got its story straight. The mere fact of Christian O'Connell broadcasting live into Sydney was interesting enough, and a credible first step to a national audience. But that's not what this move represents.Instead, it potentially sets him up for failure. If ARN had presented it to the market as a two-city show, then Sydney and Melbourne would have been seen as the battleground - and, incidentally, one where O'Connell has the craft, talent and work ethic to win.It could even have been accompanied by the supplemental message that the show will additionally be available on DAB in those other markets. But it can't pretend that the show is fully in each of those markets - advertisers won't accept it anyway. Now, unless ARN rapidly changes its messaging, each survey will be accompanied by terrible comparisons in Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane.Presented as a national sell, it will cause confusion about what should be a simple buy. Marketers and media agencies won't buy the national story until it's a genuine national story. What a waste of what should have been good news from ARN.Seven share price decimatedSeven West Media and Vinyl Group both took big hits on the ASX today, losing 10% and 7.6% respectively.SWM's price of 14c is close to its low point of 12c it briefly hit in April. It’s only been just over a month since the release of survey 3. Survey 4 last year was a fairly stable affair. This time though there’s been some significant change at the top with new No 1 stations in Sydney and Melbourne. Let’s start in Melbourne with Gold 104.3 No 1 in the city. This ends the long reign of Nine’s 3AW and is the first time that station has reached No 1 since 1992. Congrats to them. Ross and Russ retained top spot in breakfast with Nova 100’s Jase and Lauren No 1 FM and Gold’s Christian O’Connell right behind. Kyle and Jackie O were up .5 which will make ARN happy. The new Triple M breakfast show of Mick Molloy, Roo, Rosie and Titus had the biggest gains overall perhaps in part attributable to being mid AFL season. SEN 1116 too was up across the board. In Sydney, Nine’s 2GB also lost top spot and while Ben Fordham held onto No 1 breakfast, Mark Levy dropped behind smooth 95.3 in the morning and all day parts and even weekends took hits, except for John Stanley in the evening. KIIS 1065 however had a great survey. Kyle and Jackie O were up 1.4 and the station 1.1. The other biggest breakfast winner was ABC newsradio which I’m at least in part putting down to coverage of the mushroom trial which has proved to be a listening boon for the ABC. Outside of 2GB Nova 969 had the biggest losses at breakfast but I suspect that the absence of Kate Ritchie from that show will be resolved before survey 5. Brisbane, Triple M held top spot overall and reclaimed it for Marto, Margaux and Dan on breakfast. Nova 106.9’s Ash Luttsy and Nikki Osborne dropped 1.0 to third in breakfast after just clinching top spot last survey. It’s very tight in the city. 4BH had a great survey, BBQ Bob on breakfast up to a 10% audience share. KIIS 97.3 not so much. They’re now 5th overall behind 4BH and Bob. Adelaide - Mix 102.3 saw the biggest drop and Triple M the biggest gains but still are No 1 and 2 overall respectively. Triple M’s Roo Ditts and Loz took back No 1 in breakfast from Hayley and Max at Mix. fiveaa’s David and Will saw the biggest improvement in breakfast for the talk station, up 1.7 to an 11.4 audience share. Finally Perth and 96FM retained No 1 overall from Nova 93.7 but both had more than 2% losses and Nath, Nat and Shaun on Nova breakfast were down 4% but so dominant in the spot they were still clear No 1. Triple M’s Xav and Katie were up 3.4% to sneak into second spot in breakfast with that new this year pairing, and AFL season working for the station which was up 1.7 to a 10.9 audience share. 6ix had a great survey too, up 1.5 overall and 1.6 in breakfast. In this bonus episode, we look at the results of Radio Ratings Survey 3 that took place today. Jen Seyderhelm dissects the numbers and we hear from the 5 main commercial radio group content directors. The overall results for the five metros: 2GB increased their lead as the top station with smooth fm gaining ground also in second. This was 2Day FM’s first full survey with their tailored to youth format and they’ll be happy with their increases, but bizarrely possibly not in the 40-64 age group which isn’t where they’re targeting. Kyle and Jackie O were steady and top FM breakfast behind Ben Fordham at 2GB. Triple M Sydney struggled the most, I suspect because their new lineup to start 2025 lost Tarsh Belling before the ink was dry on her contract. They have announced show anchor Cat Lynch to replace her today and that stability should help improve things from here. Melbourne - 3AW is still No1 and Gold 104.3 No 2, but both saw drops and it was a second significant one for Nine Radio even though Ross and Russ’s breakfast cumes improved. Ross and Russ were No 1 in breakfast but Jase and Lauren at Nova 100 regained FM No 1. They’re audience remained the same, Christian O’Connell’s dropped a percent. The biggest gaines overall though were for ABC Melbourne and Sharnelle Vella and Bob Murphy on breakfast which will be a relief to the pair and the broadcaster. Their 2% improvement saw them overtake Kyle and Jackie O who lost their gains, and more, from last survey. It was also not a great result for Mick Molloy and his crew on Triple M Melbourne. I thought that the sporting season and a bit of time would have seen them improve but not yet. Brisbane. The top four stations all lost a little ground with Triple M staying No 1 overall and Ash Luttsy and Nikki Osborne on Nova 106.9 in breakfast. The big winner however was 4BH and BBQ Gallagher on breakfast. I feel this also happened around this time last year. Both were up to a 9.3 audience share. Can he crack the top 3 this time around? 4BC also continued its steady improvement. Adelaide saw a changing of the guard on breakfast in one of the tightest races and markets. Mix 102.3 was No 1 station overall, increasing its lead over triple m and Nova but on breakfast, despite Roo, Ditts and Loz on Triple M increasing their audience share, Nova 91.9 Jodie and Hayesy has a bigger gain to pinch No 1which saw them end Roo, Ditts and Loz’s 20 survey winning streak. Finally Perth and it was no surprise that Nath, Nat and Shaun at Nova 93.7 remained No 1 on breakfast (but down 2%) however ARN’s 96FM took over as No 1 station. Clairsy and Lisa had good gains on 96FM breakfast to close the gap and this was the one market where triple m breakfast duo Xav and Katie have bedded in nicely and overtook 6PR to sit fourth in that market now. Addition mention to Gary Adshead who departed 6PR last year to join the ABC. ABC had a good survey in Perth and Gary was up 1.2% on Drive. Ireland's newest media brand, Onic, has launched with a commitment to re-shaping the future of the audio and digital landscape in Ireland. Onic, formerly Wireless Ireland, is home to some of Ireland's best-loved radio stations: Dublin's FM104 and Q102, Cork's 96FM and C103, Live 95 in Limerick, LMFM and U105 in Belfast. The group's representative sales house, urbanmedia, will also become Onic. In a significant move, Onic also confirmed the launch of 10 new services on the much anticipated DAB+ trial across the broader Leinster area, a suite of new digital streams, an expansion of talkSPORT Ireland and newly refreshed websites. Onic has also invested heavily in visualised studios and is delighted to announce new POD and VOD offerings under the Onic Originals banner. In the coming months the group will launch the Onic App and Player, a space where it will bring all the group's live audio, podcast and visualised content together in a single destination. This new brand reflects the organisation's strategy to strengthen connections with audiences, partners and communities. With its extensive network, Onic enables brands to deliver their messages effectively, reaching diverse demographics across multiple regions - both nationally and internationally. This enhanced accessibility maximises campaign impact, creating deeper connections between brands and their audiences. Highlights from the Onic announcement include A suite of DAB+ and digital services delivering expanded consumer choice, and complementary audiences to our existing brands. These will target audiences in niche formats including Rock, Kids, Country and RnB amongst others. The expansion of talkSPORT Ireland, having secured exclusive Premier League football rights on Saturdays for the next four seasons, alongside the launch of a number of digital products. These include MNÁsplaining, a female sports focused show hosted by social media star Kayleigh Trappe, and the Beyond The 45 and 65 a GAA series featuring GAA icons Owen Mulligan, Lee Keegan and John 'Bubbles' O'Dwyer amongst others. Onic Originals will include new podcasts later in the year hosted by established Onic talent including Kathryn Thomas from Dublin's Q102 and Thomas 'Crossy' Crosse from FM104. In addition to established talent, Socially Awkward will be hosted by some of Ireland's sharpest young voices - Brandon Caufield, Shanice Griffin and Daniel Devlin and On The Kase, led by the charismatic Kasey Campion. All are shining examples of emerging talent that will appeal to younger audiences. A roadmap of consumer products, including aggregator App and Player to enhance the user experience and deliver even more choice for our audiences. A new range of cross-platform marketing and advertising opportunities for our commercial partners as we weave our new digital products into our existing radio stations to deliver national reach. Sean Barry, Managing Director of Onic, said: "Onic will be a beacon for authenticity and trusted quality content. Every day our audiences welcome us into their lives and allow us to share their day. Individually and collectively, at home or on the go, we are their trusted companion, connecting in a deep and meaningful way. We never take this for granted. Onic is a new force in Irish media, building on a brilliant heritage, setting the standard for audio and video content in the years to come. We are excited to bring together a raft of authentic and talented voices, accelerating progressive innovation and driving engagement and connection across our audiences." Brian McCarthy, Group Commercial and Operations Director, added: "We have always strived to connect our advertisers with our audience in a meaningful way, and the launch of Onic gives us even more touch points to create dynamic, effective marketing solutions for our clients. Our enhanced product range will deliver new audiences and provide advertisers with opportunities to showcase their brands in a trusted and progressive environ...
