Summer is here, and thus so is Love Island. The sun-kissed and famously amorous reality show has technically been around since 2005, but its revival in the last 11 years has made it a true household name – whether your household actually tunes in or not. This year, Irish tongues are wagging thanks to the inclusion of a strapping young Galway man who has left both his teaching post and his county behind in search of fame, fortune, and, presumably somewhere in there, love. Bleach blond Seán ‘Fitzy' Fitzgerald has caused quite the stir, with some arguing that teachers are supposed to be role models and thus appearing on a raunchy entertainment extravaganza is very much not the message to hand down to young and impressionable souls. For others, it's just a bit of fun and a possible pathway to celebrity and endorsement deals. So, what should we make of Love Island in 2026? And indeed its associated controversies and tragedies to date? On this episode of The Indo Daily, host Kevin Doyle is joined by Irish Independent multimedia reporter Deirdre Barry, and by broadcaster and content creator Fionnuala Jones, to examine if Love Island's newest Irish star can make the grade and to look at the problematic pipeline that may await. The Indo Daily is part of the Trust Project. You can view our ethics policies at independent.ie/ourjournalismSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Julian de Spainn, Ard rúnaí Chonradh na Gaeilge, reacts to comments by the Education Minister suggesting no new Irish language secondary schools will be built over the next five years.
Minister for Education Hildegarde Naughton has said that there are no plans to open any new Irish-language primary or secondary schools until at least 2032. There is much criticism of this move, even within government, as many communities across the country are seeking immersive Irish-medium education across the board, from early-years education right through to third-level education. To discuss this further, Emmet Oliver is joined by Jen Cummins, Social Democrats Spokesperson for Education and TD for Dublin South-Central.

This week I speak with the composing team of Tom James McGrath and Amy Clare Tasker about their new musical Rising. Songs from the show are incorporated into the episode. Rising reimagines the 1916 Dublin rebellion through the inner life of Patrick Pearse, its most enigmatic leader. As he leads the charge against the British Empire, Patrick must reconcile his public role with the private self he has kept hidden – his queerness, his sensitivity, and his doubts. Fighting alongside him are a community of eccentrics: artists, bookworms, socialists and socialites. Together, they form not just a revolutionary force, but a chosen family.
HyperPath, a recent spin-out from Tyndall National Institute, based at University College Cork, is addressing one of today's biggest mobility challenges: ensuring reliable, always-on wireless connectivity for systems on the move. HyperPath was founded on pioneering research conducted within Tyndall's Wireless Communications Laboratory by Dr Kariem Fahmi and Professor Holger Claussen, which solves the problem of continuous connectivity through an AI-powered software platform that seamlessly fuses and orchestrates multiple unreliable wireless networks into a single ultra-reliable connection. As cars and autonomous systems become more connected, uninterrupted communication is essential for safety and operational efficiency. However, current networks have limitations, such as cellular coverage gaps, satellite line-of-sight issues, and high costs, which can lead to service interruptions, safety risks, and reduced performance. HyperPath removes reliance on any single network, providing a stronger and more resilient connection: — For automotive manufacturers: Always-on connectivity to support advanced vehicle features, autonomy, and safety systems across urban, rural, and remote environments. — For satellite and virtual network operators: New opportunities to deliver hybrid services that combine satellite and terrestrial networks. The development of HyperPath's technology was supported through an Enterprise Ireland–funded Commercialisation Fund project, which enabled the team to translate their research into a market-ready solution. HyperPath also benefitted from Enterprise Ireland's Business Partners Programme and has secured Pre-Seed Start Fund investment, providing crucial support as the company moves into the next phase of growth. With this foundation in place, HyperPath is now entering a growth phase that will see the expansion of its engineering and commercial teams. The company's plans for high-value job creation will contribute to Ireland's growing deep-tech and semiconductor-adjacent ecosystem, adding further momentum to the region's reputation as a hub for advanced connectivity and mobility technologies. Dr Patrick Morrissey, Director of Innovation and Industry Engagement, Tyndall, said: "HyperPath represents the type of innovative, high-impact software company that complements and reinforces Ireland's rapidly scaling semiconductor ecosystem. Its success showcases the Semiconductor Strategy, Silicon Island, in practice, and aligns with Tyndall's mission to support companies that add capability, depth, and competitiveness to Ireland's national semiconductor landscape." Professor Holger Claussen, Head of Tyndall's Wireless Communications Laboratory and Professor of Wireless Communications at University College Cork and Trinity College Dublin, said: "With HyperPath, we solved the very hard technical problem to efficiently combine multiple unreliable wireless networks into an ultra-reliable and highly efficient link. We approach the theoretical maximum bonding performance, which currently no other existing link-bonding solution can do with variable wireless links." Ger Mc Namara, CEO, HyperPath, said: "We are at a pivotal point in time for resilient, on-the-move wireless connectivity, be it autonomous vehicles, mobile robotics, drone operations or emergency services. The challenges and business impacts associated with single wireless network use can no longer be tolerated. HyperPath is leading the way in delivering AI-optimised, resilient wireless hybrid connectivity"

For generations, Irish speakers north and south of the Irish Border have fought to keep their language alive. And today, what was once dismissed as a fading tongue is undergoing an exhilarating and vibrant revival. The Republic's newly elected president Catherine Connolly has made it clear the Irish language will play a central role during her time in office and says she wants to see the native tongue of this island flourish.Meanwhile, north of the Border, the Irish language is also making headlines. In October, attendees at the annual Oireachtas na Samhna Irish-language festival heard Belfast was “leading the revival” of the language. New Irish-medium schools are springing up across the city to meet a surge in demand and Belfast is now hailed by many as Ireland's largest urban Gaeltacht. However, beneath all this buzz lies a battleground. The Irish language remains highly politically charged across Northern Ireland, with unionist leaders pushing back against what they see as an erosion of their identity and traditions. They argue the language is being imposed, without consent, into on daily lives. From bilingual street signs to Irish on council property – every word is a flashpoint. So why does the Irish language stir such fierce resistance in Northern Ireland?Claims that the language is being “weaponised”, are unhelpful and only create further divisions, says Linda Ervine, one of the leading activists and teachers of the Irish language in Northern Ireland and manager of the Turas Irish language project in east Belfast.“I try to say to people if you don't like the language, it doesn't symbolise who you are, that's fine, I totally accept that,” Ms Ervine tells today's In The News episode. “Nobody is removing the English. All we're asking for is a shared space.”“The language is part of the family of Celtic language, it's spoken throughout the British Isles,” she says. “No matter our history, we have these shared, familial and linguistic ties to each other and I think that's something to be celebrated, not something to be frightened of.”Today, on In The News, what's behind the revival of the Irish Language in Belfast, and why is it controversial?Presented by Sorcha Pollak. Produced by Andrew McNair. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

AIB, Bank of Ireland, and PTSB have today announced plans to launch Zippay, a new person-to-person mobile payment service, in early 2026. Zippay will be available to more than 5 million eligible customers of the three retail banks initially. It will be an in-app service offered through the banks' existing mobile banking apps and delivered by leading European PayTech Nexi. Customers will be able to send, request, and split payments instantaneously with Zippay by using the mobile number of their contacts who are also using the service. Speaking on today's announcement, Brian Hayes, Chief Executive BPFI, stated: "We are delighted to join AIB, Bank of Ireland and PTSB in announcing the introduction of Zippay to the Irish market next year. Developed in response to customer feedback and demand, this will provide a quick and easy way to send and receive money or split bills with friends, family and contacts who are also Zippay users. It will be delivered through customers' existing mobile banking apps and therefore comes with all the same high levels of security, protection, and digital safety and avoids the need for topping up a digital wallet or downloading a separate app." Describing how the app will work, Mr Hayes continued: "Eligible customers will automatically be enrolled to Zippay, which will appear in their personal banking app once the service is launched next year. It will use mobile numbers saved in the customer's contact list to identify who else uses Zippay. There will be no need to set up a new payee or know their IBAN, BIC or account numbers; the money will transfer between accounts seamlessly. The service will allow customers to send up to €1,000 per day as well as request up to €500 per transaction. It will be simple, speedy and secure." Nexi, a European PayTech company and one of the world's leading payment technology providers, will deliver the Zippay service in Ireland. Nexi already has a strong track record in the Irish financial services sector, having successfully partnered with domestic institutions to offer a range of reliable digital payment solutions. Also speaking on today's announcement, Renato Martini, Digital Banking Solutions Director of Nexi Group, said: "Built on an API-based architecture, Nexi has designed Zippay for scalability and future expansion with the goal of making the solution as widely available as possible to customers across Ireland. After the initial launch, Zippay will be offered on a non-discriminatory basis to all financial institutions that provide IBAN account services and a mobile app to Irish consumers and Nexi will manage the integration of eligible financial institutions that wish to join the service. Delivering this service in Ireland is an important recognition of Nexi's experience in developing and launching innovative Account-to-Account solutions, thanks to its know-how, skills, and people. We are proud to be contributing to the further acceleration of digital payment solutions in Europe." Over the coming weeks, all eligible customers of AIB, Bank of Ireland and PTSB will receive information on the new service ahead of the rollout next year, including details on how to opt out if they so choose. A dedicated website www.Zippay.ie has also been launched today with detailed information on the service and how it will work. Additionally, each bank has launched their own dedicated online Zippay information page on which customers can find further details specific to their bank: AIB - www.aib.ie/Zippay Bank of Ireland - www.bankofireland.com/Zippay PTSB - www.ptsb.ie/Zippay More about Irish Tech News Irish Tech News are Ireland's No. 1 Online Tech Publication and often Ireland's No.1 Tech Podcast too. The National Pension Helpline has this morning launched the first ever online pension comparison platform in Ireland, which tracks the performance of hundreds of pension funds. The Irish Pension Fund Explorer is a free comparison tool with real-time data on 597 pension funds, aimed at promoting transparency within the industry and allowing people to make better investment decisions. The searchable database can be used to compare each fund's growth, risk exposure, where their assets are located, and the holding companies involved. It provides clear comparisons between two or more funds with interactive graphs and charts, allowing savers to view multiple funds' value and performance side by side, as well as other key stats such as management fees. Irish Pension Fund Data Resource Various funds from the same pension provider can also be pitted against each other to compare how each fund is faring, with users being able to toggle between different timeframes to get a clear picture of performance over time. There are ten significant pension fund operators in Ireland: Zurich, Irish Life, Aviva, New Ireland, Standard Life, Mercer, Acorn, Royal London, BOI and AIB. Those wishing to invest have needed to go to each provider individually or ask a broker to help them compare funds - whereas the Pension Fund Explorer allows people to view every portfolio from every provider available in Ireland in one location. The tool is free and no registration or personal details are required, giving everyone equal access to the data. Speaking at the launch, James Dorrian, Managing Director of the National Pension Helpline, said: "This new platform is a major milestone in making the pension industry more transparent and easier for the public to navigate the hundreds of funds that are available. "The National Pension Helpline was set up out of frustration for how hard it is for the average person in Ireland to get the information they need when it comes to investing in their pension. "This first-of-its-kind public resource allows users to compare the performance, asset allocations and risk profiles of hundreds of individual pension funds. "We believe that this data should be freely available without people having to trudge through and compare hundreds of documents, and the Fund Explorer enables people to compare every fund under one roof. "Investing in the wrong fund can cost you in retirement, and similarly, smart investments have a compounding effect which means that even monthly contributions can grow into a substantial pension pot in the future. "We make no claims that past performance can predict future outcomes, however, our independently sourced data can certainly give people a taste of how each fund is performing against other funds, either from the same provider or different providers." The world's first fabrication and design of a silicon chip without direct human input has been completed by researchers at Lero, the University of Limerick-based Research Centre for Software, heralding the possibility of creating a new high-tech export-based industry in Ireland. Professor of Machine Learning at the University of Limerick Conor Ryan led the research team which has just filed a patent for the totally Irish-designed process that came from a project entitled "Automatic Design of Digital Circuits' (ADDC) funded by Research Ireland. "This is the first time ever anywhere in the world that machine learning has been used to design and fabricate a silicon chip entirely from scratch. This could pave the way for a new era of automated digital circuit design with Ireland at its centre, creating a new export industry with many well-paying jobs. "The patent secures the proprietary methods and novel approach to automating silicon chip design's traditionally manual, complex, and error-prone process. The techniques created by Lero replace traditional methods with an entirely automated flow, reducing the need for human intervention and minimising the risks of design errors," said Prof Ryan, a lead researcher at Lero. The Limerick-based team plans to work with selected global chip design and fabrication companies following the successful manufacture of a Lero-designed chip by world-leading chip foundry TSMC, paving the way for a new era of automated digital circuit design. Prof Ryan said their patent covers the use of a grammar-based optimisation engine that ensures all generated designs are manufacturable and ready for production and opens the door to smarter, faster, and more sustainable hardware design, with potential applications in consumer electronics, healthcare, automotive, and more. "The system combines cutting-edge machine learning with industry-standard tools and workflows, ensuring the results are compatible with modern manufacturing processes. "It radically reduces the time and financial resources required to produce integrated circuits, democratising access to advanced hardware innovation. Our process also eliminates an entire step in the traditional verification process," he added. Prof. Ryan acknowledged that the project was made possible through partnerships with leading experts and organisations, utilising TSMC's world-class fabrication facilities. The process is protected under European Patent Application No. 24213734.7, which is held by the University of Limerick and the Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest, and covers Digital Circuit Creation Tool and Method.
