"MARK STEVENS: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH" The name MARK STEVENS probably doesn't ring a bell with moviegoers today. However, he's one of those actors who once you see him on screen, you say, “Oh, yeah, THAT guy!” Still, at one time, he was a very in-demand leading man who was always compelling and had a tough-guy likability that brightened up many a hum-drum movie. He may not have reached the upper echelon of fame like contemporaries ALAN LADD or DANA ANDREWS, but he certainly left his mark — particularly in “The Dark Corner” with a pre-TV LUCILLE BALL. Like CHARLES LAUGHTON, DICK POWELL, and IDA LUPINO, he also became a pioneer of the actor-turned-director. Today, we take a look at his long and varied career and celebrate him as our Star of the Month. This week we discuss Hitchcock's 1963 thriller about birds attacking humans.***SPOILER ALERT*** We do talk about this movie in its entirety, so if you plan on watching it, we suggest you watch it before listening to our takes.A Universal Picture. Released March 28, 1963. Produced and directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Screenplay by Evan Hunter based on the short story by Daphne du Maurier. Starring Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Veronica Cartwright, and Suzanne Pleshette. Cinematography by Robert Burks. Edited by George Tomasini.Ranking: 12 out of 52. Ranking movies is a reductive parlor game. It's also fun. And it's a good way to frame a discussion. We aggregated over 70 ranked lists from critics, fans, and magazines The Birds got 2,479 ranking points.
Look up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's… several thousand birds! We are pecking apart Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 film The Birds! We talk horror elements, formal techniques, why Hitchcock is a jerk, fashion, theories, & more! I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha and Indy Randhawa The Birds is a 1963 American natural horror-thriller film produced and directed by Alfred Hitchcock, released by Universal Pictures and starring Jessica Tandy, Rod Taylor, Suzanne Pleshette, and introducing Tippi Hedren in her film debut. Loosely based on the 1952 short story of the same name by Daphne du Maurier, it focuses on a series of sudden and unexplained violent bird attacks on the people of Bodega Bay, California, over the course of a few days. The screenplay is by Evan Hunter, who was told by Hitchcock to develop new characters and a more elaborate plot while keeping du Maurier's title and concept of unexplained bird attacks.
Indy recommends the underappreciated coming of age series Freaks and Geeks, Samantha reads the novel Back in the Burbs by Avery Flynn and Tracy Wolff. Finally, we get ready for some Hitchcock as we preview The Birds! I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha and Indy Randhawa Freaks and Geeks is an American teen comedy-drama television series created by Paul Feig and executive-produced by Judd Apatow that aired on NBC during the 1999–2000 television season. The show is set in a suburban high school near Detroit during 1980–81. The theme of Freaks and Geeks reflects "the sad, hilarious unfairness of teen life". With little success when it first aired, because of an erratic episode schedule and conflicts between the creators and NBC, the series was canceled after airing 12 out of the 18 episodes. The series became a cult classic, and Apatow continued the show's legacy by incorporating the actors in future productions. EPISODE 61 - “FAVORITE CLASSIC FILMS OF THE 1960s” - 11/11/2024 The decade of the 1960s was an exciting time in filmmaking. The stodgy studio contract system was starting to give way to a new crop of independent cinematic auteurs, often associated with the "New Hollywood" era, include: Stanley Kubrick, Robert Altman, Sam Peckinpah, Arthur Penn, John Cassavetes, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, and Peter Bogdanovich. These films were edgier and pushed the creative boundaries and social themes to reflect the changing times. In this episode, Steve and Nan discuss some of their favorite films of the decade and why they had such an impact! When TVs entered living rooms and Cinerama lit up movie screens, teens went nuts for Troy Donahue. Born Merle Johnson Jr. he was discovered at The Golden Pheasant restaurant in Calabasas by bigwigs, William Asher and James Sheldon. Signed to Rock Hudson's manager Henry Wilson, Troy won the role of Johnny in A Summer Place and was a teen idol by the morning after opening night. A screen dream, Troy's reality was a nightmare. Author Michael Gregg Michaud has written books about Sal Mineo, Mae West, Marlene Dietrich and Diane Mcbain. Michael joins us to discuss his biography, Inventing Troy Donahue: The Making of a Movie Star.Long intrigued by the darker reality behind Hollywood's seemingly perfect presentation, Michael helps us understand the challenges that shaped Troy's life. He lost his father at 14 and undiagnosed dyslexia adversely affected his grades and his sense of worth. Troy began drinking in middle school. He says he was drunk all the way through his two TV series, Surfside 6 and Hawaiian Eye and unable to master new lines because of his learning disability and his inebriation. By the time he made Paul Springs Weekend, he was downing three codeine laced aspirins with a pint of vodka, followed by four lines of cocaine just to get himself up and out the door. This regimen was quickly followed by a career on the skids, financial ruin and four failed marriages. Troy's charm, humor, wisdom and gratitude pulled him through recovery and bonded him for life with ex-wives, girlfriends and screen partners, Suzanne Pleshette, Sandra Dee, Connie Stevens, Diane McBain and Angie Dickinson. We also learn from Michael about his other books, including a brand new one on Mae West's nightclub act. It's called Mae West and Her Adonises.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending the new doc series on Paramount +, Willie Nelson & Family and Loudermilk on Amazon.Path Points of Interest:Michael Gregg Michaud on AmazonInventing Troy Donahue: The Making of a Movie StarTroy Donahue on WikipediaMichael Gregg Michaud on FacebookMichael Gregg Michaud on InstagramWillie Nelson & FamilyLoudermilk - Amazon Prime

We're winding down February's theme of WOMEN IN CRISIS and for our last vintage selection we got a case of Crisis in front of and behind the camera. We couldn't wrap up without a little Hitchcock and the struggles of Tippi Hedren regarding some calculated aviary beasts. Alfred Hitchcock wanted Tippi to be his personal leading lady human doll that he could control and throw birds at. He got two films out of her before she ran away and today's talk is of the first. We're discussing the 1963 horror hit “THE BIRDS” starring Tippi, Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy & Suzanne Pleshette. The birds couldn't have picked a better idiot town than Bodega Bay to spiral these humans off into a local apocalypse. If I were a seagull, it would be fun as hell to dive bomb folks. I would be just like a typical seagull in that way. They should have had some California Condors plucking the small children off the street. Like any other horror that came after it, this movie is full of human beings making the worst decisions. During the Disney100 centennial celebration of the Walt Disney Company, Disney's animated films and theme parks have been getting a lot of attention. But what about its live action legacy? Many may associate Disney live action with recent remakes or Marvel and Star Wars, but with over 300 films, Disney has 70+ years producing live action films. To celebrate this medium, hosts Courtney and Emily welcome back author Spencer Wright to talk about his new book, “The Enchanted Disney: Stories of Walt, Hollywood, and Live-Action Film.” Wright wanted to celebrate actors of the Hollywood era in which Walt created the Walt Disney Studios. Actors such as Suzanne Pleshette, Debbie Reynolds, Maurice Chevalier, and Peter Lorre may be best known for films from other cinema studios, but they also shared their talents with Disney and helped shape the contemporary live action Disney studio we know today. We have an amazing story for you today on the podcast, certainly one of the most fascinating stories we've ever heard. This author lived a pretty extraordinary life. He was hired by legendary Hollywood director Alfred Hitchcock to write a screenplay for what would become one of Hitchcock's greatest movies. It was one of several screenplays written by our featured author. Actors who starred in projects he wrote and developed for the big screen and Television include Richard Chamberlain, F. Murray Abraham, Ben Johnson, Jerry Orbach, Robby Benson, Raquel Welch, Burt Reynolds, Yul Brynner, Tom Skerritt , Kirk Douglas, Kim Novak, Barbara Rush, Walter Matthau, Rod Taylor, Tippi Hedren, Jessica Tandy, and Suzanne Pleshette. Wow! If You're a movie buff you may have already guessed that the Hitchcock classic he wrote the screenplay for was, The Birds. Before Hitchcock and Hollywood our author served on a destroyer in the Pacific in the Navy during World War II. We're just getting started. He wrote more than 139 novels over 53 years! That's an average of a little more than 2 and a half novels a year for more than half a century. He was born in East Harlem New York in 1926. Born Salvatore Albert Lombino, he legally changed his name to Evan Hunter in 1952, but before he did, he sold a short science fiction story to If, Worlds of Science Fiction Magazine. In the magazine, which had made its debut two months earlier in March 1952, he is credited with writing “Welcome, Martians!” As S.A. Lombino which as fas I can tell was one of only a handful of times he used his real name. So why the name change? Well, as the story goes an editor once told him his Italian heritage might stop him from achieving great success, so SA Lombino became Evan Hunter. Oh, and if you think you recognize the name Evan Hunter, you're probably right. Lombino took a number of jobs in the early 1950's to pay the bills while attempting to get his writing career off the ground. One of them led to a novel, which became a movie, starring Glenn Ford, Sidney Pointier, Vic Morrow and Anne Francis. He spent 17 days as a teacher at the Bronx Vocational High School in September 1950. That experience led to his 6th novel titled The Blackboard Jungle which became the movie of the same name starring the previously mentioned star studded cast. Lombino, or Hunter had several pen names John Abbott, Curt Cannon, Hunt Collins, Ezra Hannon, Richard Marsten and then there's the name he used most often, Ed McBain! As McBain he wrote the “87th Precinct” crime series. Once again his novels made their way to Television. In 1961 and 62 NBC aired a police drama called “87th Precinct”. He started writing for television in 1956 with a teleplay for "The Kaiser Aluminum Hour" which aired on NBC in 1956 and 57 and he wrote the story for two episodes of "Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer" a syndicated TV show, two years later in 1958 and 59. He didn't write a lot of science fiction but what he did write is good. I chose this story because it's unusual. A story written by a writer, about a writer getting a little help from a bizarre source. Writing stories was hard work—unless Fred had a typewriter like "Reggie" that could write by itself! Nonsense? Fred agreed until he met—THE PLAGIARIST FROM RIGEL IV By Evan Hunter Subscribe to The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast - Vintage Sci-Fi Stories Every Week on Soundwise

This is a radio adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's horror story, "The Birds." first published in 1952. It was adapted for CBS Radio Network's Anthology series "Hollywood Presents Lux Radio Theatre." The show was renamed and rebroadcasts on the Armed Forces Radio Service... that is the broadcast on this track with Don Wilson as the announcer rather than Cecil B. DeMille who was on the original broadcast. This is the same story that Alfred Hitchcock made into a motion picture in 1963 that starred Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette and Tippi Hedren. The audio intro gives background on the anthology series and identifies the cast members in this fine radio adaptation. This will live in the playlist "Horror/Suspense".

The results are in! We've got the official thoughts and criticisms and witticisms regarding the THREE weird movies our everlasting friends from the Dom Deluise Patreon Club have picked for us this month. And you'll never believe which tough guys are in 'em!! Up first! It's 1979's Hot Stuff, which is neither a sex comedy nor an official sequel from the Smoky and the Bandit franchise. But it might be a spiritual sequel, and it's definitely got Dom Deluise (the actor, not the Patreon tier). Listen along as we explore Dom's only (notable) directorial effort, in which he, Jerry Reed and Suzanne Pleshette serve and protect the community by flipping old wares in and old wares-house. With fat jokes! (thanks Ricky O!) Next up! We've done Sam Raimi's 1985 film Crime Wave, so of course we're reviewing John Paizs's 1985 film Crime Wave aka The Big Crimewave (from 1985). This confusingly-titled and confusingly-realized debut feature from the Canadian auter concerns the screenplay-writing escapades of an old-timey film fan as well as some on-and-off-screen crimes. With surrealist photography! (thanks Eddie!) Finally! Of course, it's 1987's Tough Guys Don't Dance, that soapishly operatic cuckolding drama from true-life shit-head Norman Mailer. Ryan O'Neal stars in this Provincetown classic that contains everyone's favorite dramatic line readings. With baby Penn Jillette! (thanks Matt from Arizona!) All this plus the death of a clown, Kevin's adventures at HorrorHound Cincinnati, a reluctance for early Pumpkin Pie consumption, the great skeleton shortage of 2021, Halloween pancakes, ass-slappin' on goofballs, Dom Deluise appreciation, your exciting new magazine subscription, nerd news and even more! Recorded live-to-tape on National Ants on a Log Day, 2021!! Direct Donloyd HereGot a movie suggestion for the show, or better yet an opinion on next week's movies? Les, Kurt, and Jason don't have a Blac Chyna Report, but they DO have an update on Lori Loughlin, yet another discussion of Patti Labelle's dessert selections, and the concept that Martha Stewart either thugged it our or hugged it our (only autocorrect really knows). Then, they guys (reluctantly) start to dissect Hallmark's Sun, Sand, and Romance… which is more like Sun, Bland, and Romance (amirite?). Kurt think it's Hallmark's first cuckhold movie, Jason points out that the movie's many empty platitudes are similar to the offerings from the store Successories, and Les gets excited to watch Tony Robbins talkin' s***. The movie may feature the exact same extras playing resort's employees AND the guests, but at least a mysterious real estate mogul exerts some Big D energy to liven up your s**tty souvenir shopping montage. 70 Movies We Saw in the 70s: Ep 6—HOT STUFF (1979) Robust funnyman Dom DeLuise mounts the director’s chair for the first—and last—time with HOT STUFF, a Miami-set crime farce wherein he co-stars with Jerry Reed and Suzanne Pleshette. Together, they play kooky cops who set up a phony fencing operation to bust an array of contraband-peddling oddballs. Oh, does it not work. What DOES work, however, is UW Cinematheque honcho JIM HEALY joining co-hosts Mike McPadden and Ben Reiser to take on HOT STUFF for a zesty, informative discussion that includes Sydney Lassick and David Carradine (as his prison bride) in SONNY BOY; the Gene Siskel Sneer of Disapproval, what else was playing in Summer ’79; and how Dom’s directorial debut rests at the heart of the Hal Needham/Burt Reynolds/Mel Brooks Venn diagram.
STAN FISCHLER discusses the NHL's suspended season, his date with Suzanne Pleshette, watching his grandchildren play hockey in Israel pre-lockdown, his late wife Shirley's being a sports pioneer, attending triple-headers as a kid, the 1918 Spanish flu, the "disgraceful" boiled hot dogs at Ebbets Field, the NYC subway system and, for good measure, Borrah Minnevitch and His Harmonica Rascals.
This week, we conclude our dive into the films of Alfred Hitchcock! Our final film in the series is the 1963 classic: The Birds. Tippi Hedren and Rod Taylor star in this thriller as Melanie and Mitch, a young would-be couple who find their mutual flirting interrupted by a bizarre phenomenon of birds of all species attacking people and property in the small fishing community of Bodega Bay, California. Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette, and Veronica Cartwright round out the cast. We dig into the ethics of directing a cast, the pressures placed on actors on film sets, the Oscars, and some detours into Florida Man and politics. It was a wild chat befitting an action-packed treasure from the Master of Suspense. Join us! Fill in some of your cinematic gaps as we venture into what we've dubbed #OperationMasterOfSuspense. Lionesses who followed scar happily in the first movie have been exiled to the Shadow lands and are led by a lioness named Zira. The rest of the lions live at Pride Rock with Simba as their leader. Simba’s daughter Kiara meets Zira’s son, Kovu, who was picked by scar to be his heir. The two try to become friends but are drawn apart by their fighting parents. This gives Zira the idea to train her son to fight so that one day he can go back to pride rock under the guise of wanting to be friends/part of their pride and once he gets their trust he can kill Simba. What Zira didn’t plan on was actual love blossoming between Kiara and Kovu. Who together try to make their broken tribe one again.○ Fun facts: Just as the first movie is said to be based upon "Hamlet," the sequel has elements of another Shakespeare play, "Romeo and Juliet."○ Most of the original cast reprise their roles from the original, with the notable exceptions of Rowan Atkinson, who was replaced by Edward Hibbert as the voice of Zazu. Jeremy Irons was also replaced by Jim Cummings as the voice of Scar in this film, as he originally did for the last few lyrics of the song "Be Prepared."○ The opening song, "He Lives In You," was also used in the Broadway version of The Lion King.○ Suzanne Pleshette and Jason Marsden portray mother and son, Zira and Kovu. Three years following this film, the two actors went on to voice characters with a similar relationship in the Oscar-winning Hayao Miyazaki's animated feature, Spirited Away(2001).● Segment: This week in Disney history “Once Upon a Time”○ A bunch of movies won Oscars○ Feb 26, 2014: Aladdin Musical Makes its Broadway Debut● Segment: Misc “Whosits and Whatsits Galore”○ Pixar short “Purl”○ Pixar Short “Kitbull”● Segment: News/Announcements “The Newsies Banner”○ Aladdin Trailer - Genie○ New Captain Marvel Trailers○ Frozen 2● Segment: weekly top 4 (secret from each other)”Let’s get down to business”● Top 4 Disney Couples○ Mr and Mrs Incredible / Bob and Helen Parr○ Eugene and Rapunzel○ Carl and Ellie○ Roger and AnitaContact info: Social Media: Facebook: Faith Trust and Pixie Dust - Podcast Email: 1stgeek411@gmail.com Twitter: @FTPD_PodcastPersonal Twitters: @Sparkle_Fists @SpilledXWater @deanna790Check us out on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, and Spotify!!!Tease Next Week: Movie: Bedknobs and broomsticks Top 4: Top 4 worst disney movies
