The idea of the breakbeat was born in the Bronx, but its evolution since then has been a transatlantic dialogue, a rhythmic exchange between continents that never really settled. In London, this language found its most elastic form, bending through jungle, drum & bass, and techno, mutating with each new generation of producers. The city remains a living organism, constantly reshaping itself through DJs, club nights, and collectives that resist repetition. Unknown Species, a London-based platform and event series that blends music and environmental awareness in support of endangered species, has carved out a corner for artists to explore that freedom. Its founder, Rado, better known as Naturalisten, is the musical mind behind this week's edition of Delayed with. This mix was recorded almost a year ago at Espacio Perpendicular in Madrid, during the first collaborative event between Unknown Species and the Perpen crew, alongside Delayed friends F-on, Fran Campos, Lynne, DB1, Felix K, Muted, Vrika, and Pillen. It's a space where rhythm meets reflection, and Naturalisten rises fully to the occasion. The first half builds tension through shifting grooves and subtle rhythmic displacements, a controlled energy that feels alive and restless. As the set unfolds, the edges blur. Synths stretch into stranger territories, textures become unmoored, and the intensity softens into something beautifully off-kilter, a reminder that unpredictability can be its own kind of balance. Naturalisten lets the music speak, and it speaks fluently, with groove, curiosity, and a quiet sense of purpose. https://soundcloud.com/unknownspecies https://www.instagram.com/unknown____species/ Write up by @gilleswasserman Follow us on social media: https://soundcloud.com/itsdelayed https://linktr.ee/delayed https://www.delayed.nyc https://www.facebook.com/itsdelayed https://www.instagram.com/_____delayed https://www.youtube.com/@_____delayed Contact us: info@delayed.nyc

On this episode, Marc talks with Ian Thompson, author of "Synths, Sax, & Situationists: The French Musical Underground 1968-1978," published in August of 2025. It's a detailed history of a group of French rock bands who, inspired by the protests and civil unrest of May 1968 as well as psych rock and free jazz, broke with convention to create some of the most original music of the 70s. The best known of these groups were Gong, Magma, and Heldon, all of which Thompson covers in depth, but he also delves into bands who haven't gotten their due such as Lard Free and Moving Gelatin Plates, and ones who barely existed yet made a mark, such as Barricade and Cheval Fou. As Ian writes, "It slowly dawned on me that if other anglophones were to discover this essential music they would need a reference - in English. And so, for the last five years I've digested everything I could find on the topic and interviewed almost fifty musicians from the scene. Now, at long last, the result of my efforts rests in your hands."You can buy "Synths, Sax, & Situationists" here.We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Ian Thompson!

We had an amazing chat with Casey Neill about his latest release "Time Zero Land," sequencing the album, and something music fans should never do! Portland, Oregon-based songwriter Casey Neill talks about time zero land  (released July 26th on Fluff & Gravy Records). This album follows last fall's Casey Neill & the Norway Rats' Sending Up Flares, and includes two outtakes from those band sessions. Neill engineered the rest at his home studio and plays the lion's share of the instruments. It's a dreamy affair with sonic homages to Elliott Smith, Nick Drake, Sade, the acoustic side of Rust Never Sleeps, and the Brit-folk pioneered by Bert Jansch, Richard Thompson, and June Tabor. One of the things people often say about the Norway Rats is how their music defies easy genre categorization and while Sending Up Flares leans into the fruits of that collaboration, time zero land embraces the influences and craft songwriting that has been at the core of Neill's work.  A prolific songwriter and road warrior since the late 1990s, Americana and Scots/Irish-folk influences have often underscored his songwriting. Sending Up Flares hints at a European influence too, with songs that channel everything from the cinematic sweep of golden-era U2 to the dark, complex alt-rock of PJ Harvey. If time zero land is intimate and largely acoustic, then Sending Up Flares is broad, eclectic, and every bit as explosive as its title. A four-piece string section (Bizarre Star, arranged by Kyleen King) adds a symphonic punch to “How Beautiful Am I?,” the album's tribute to Marianne Faithfull. Synths, stacked vocal harmonies, and burbling electronics run throughout “Fall Into Forever,” bringing to life the song's bizarre storyline involving a Tokyo typhoon, Dante's Paradiso, and pop star Britney Spears. Together, these 11 songs shine new light on a band who, after more than a dozen years together, have arrived somewhere singular and startlingly unique.  Check him out here:  Website: caseyneill.com IG: casey_neill FB: Casey Neill

We journey through the making of his latest EP, "Music from a Room Full of Synths," recorded at the Swiss Museum for Electronic Music Instruments, where jazz, funk, and hip-hop merge with club sounds.Another topic that came up was on how Dorian navigates artistic identity and societal expectations, revealing how personal experiences can forge a path to authenticity. What's up, dudes? It's a Siouxsie and the Banshees Christmas, as Rikki Meece from the Sleigh Bells and Mistletoe Podcast and I break down two songs from goth rock band! Yep, it's “Israel” v ”Il Est Né Le Divin Enfant” in the Thunderdome! We talk the band's catalogue, their Christmas music, their look and sound, and definitely their lyrics! In other words, we get into it all! Two songs enter, one song leaves!"Israel" was released as a stand-alone single in between the albums Kaleidoscope (1980) and Juju (1981) on November 28, 1980 by record label Polydor. While touring in Europe in autumn 1980, the band wanted to write a Christmas song to be released on time for December of that year. They composed it on the road, which was quite unusual for them. It was the first time that Siouxsie Sioux and Steven Severin composed a single with guitarist John McGeoch and drummer Budgie. The song was co-produced by Nigel Gray: it prominently featured a 30 singer Welsh choir on backing vocals. It soon became a classic of their repertoire and was regularly performed during encores at each of their tours.Subsequently, “Il Est Né Le Divin Enfant” was released as B-side to “Melt” on November 26, 1982. The tune for this carol can be found in R. Grosjean's Airs des noêl lorrain (1862), where it is called 'Ancien air de chasse', and it is indeed the case that an old Normandy hunting tune 'Tête bizarde', though in 6/8, is melodically very similar. The Shorter New Oxford Book of Carols editors postulated that the tune is an 18th century composition in a rustic style. The text of this carol was first published in Dom G. Legeay's Noêls anciens (1875-6). Most Common translation is from Edward Bliss Reed from 1930.Synths? Check. ‘80s Goth videos? Yup. 19th century carol with a quasi-canon? Definitely! So put on your makeup, grab your mic, and sing along with this post-punk goth episode!
