Could the concept of the Other Mother replace the more forced, less authentic systems of teaching social and emotional learning in schools? Latoya Nelson joins Annie Friday this week to discuss the topic of her dissertation. This concept of the Other Mother dates back to the time when enslaved peoples in the US had to become surrogate parents of sort to young children. This community-based approach to care could help children feel nurtured in the educational environments in which they're learning. Social-emotional concepts would be learned through authentic relationships in the communities where kids are spending most of their time. “Movies and television is always what I wanted to do,” says Eric Martin. “I don't remember it wasn't a time it wasn't the main interest in my life, but screenwriting is something I was a little bit late too. I was a latchkey key and I viewed writing as work, something to get done to go watch movies.” “But there were a series of teachers who kept pulling me aside and said, ‘You're a writer, do you enjoy this?' It kept happening so the message finally got through to take it seriously and put in that kind of effort.” Looking back, Martin says he understood story structure just from watching so many movies. He also had a teacher teach the hero's journey to write essays. “I don't actually think about structure when I write. Use the hero's journey. Don't use it. I personally hate writing textbooks. Any book that tells you how to write is bullshit. I think you pick it up and inherently understand it. I think it's baked in even if you think you're following it. It's just there. It's part of the western storytelling ethic.” Rather than obsessing over screenwriting books, Martin would tell you to “go live some life.” He adds, “Don't try to read a bunch of things and use a theory on anything. Live some life and I think you'll understand [life] on a deeper level. I see a lot of stuff out there and it feels hollow. People who do depthful work live interesting lives.” This has led Martin to focus on “character and story.” As a screenwriter, this is always the focus, whether it's his TV movie The Other Mother, the Starz series about professional wrestling Heels, or his latest project, the newest installment of Loki for Marvel and Disney. Matthew Dicks is a bestselling author of fiction and non-fiction books. His fiction books are Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend; Something Missing; Unexpectedly Milo; The Perfect Comeback of Caroline Jacobs; 21 Truths About Love; and The Other Mother. And he also has non-fiction books which is how I came to really find out about him through his work around storytelling. His book Storyworthy, which is about engaging, teaching, and persuading to change your life through the power of storytelling, and Someday is Today: 22 Simple, Actionable Ways to Propel your Creative Life. So, at his core, Matthew is a storyteller and he's going to tell great stories in today's conversation. He uses storytelling to really create and leverage philosophical beliefs and wisdom and ideas to help us live a better life. He's also a teacher. He's won awards as a teacher, he has won awards as a storyteller, he is the author of a rock opera called The Clowns and the musicals Caught in the Middle, Sticks and Stones, and Summertime. He's also a wedding DJ. His content has been featured and published in Reader's Digest, The Huffington Post, Parent's Magazine, and more places. He is someone who is multi-faceted, as you're going to find out in today's conversation. But once again, he is a storyteller and a storytelling champion. He's won a record 56 times from The Moth Story Slam Championship. We're going to talk about competing in this conversation, we'll talk about parenting and teaching. He teaches fifth grade and it's interesting to get his perspective on his mindset when he's teaching, when he's doing TED Talks, when he's writing, as he's podcasting in today's conversation. You can tell that Matthew, I think, shows up very similarly in all of those spaces because he believes in storytelling as a thing and a tool and a skill that we can use in our daily lives. He's also the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Speak Up, which is a Hartford-based storytelling organization that produces shows throughout New England. Matthew's also a Yankee fan, so we'll talk about sports in today's conversation. And, once again, I think you're just going to love Matthew's approach to life, his desire to continue to make conversations and interactions more intentional, more thoughtful, and with storytelling in mind.   Matthew had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “I want to have the story” (6:25). “Storytelling, for me, is a way of making sense of my life” (6:50). “The most important audience for any story you tell in your entire life is yourself” (6:55). “When I tell stories about my life, my life gets better both in the moment and in reflection” (7:10). “I'm so deeply curious about why I am who I am” (8:00). “Everything that's happened in the past is essentially who we are now” (10:05). “I try to bring in every possible element of life to my classroom that I can” (10:55). “What you have now does not define your future” (11:45). “When I'm writing fiction, it's a little scarier because I don't know what the end is, and I don't know if there is an end” (16:20). “One of the things I love to do is talk to kids about unsung heroes” (19:50). “I seek to ensure that kids know how much I care about them as quickly as possible” (22:35). “As a teacher, I give positive feedback relentlessly” (28:35). “Everyone wants some validation, everyone wants some appreciation, everyone wants to know that some of the stuff I did was good” (29:35). “Every time you're going to say something critical to someone, there should be 6 positive things that are accompanying it” (29:50). “Statistics collapse when fear arrives” (39:25). “Every single day, the third slide I show my kids is a message that says, ‘mistakes are valuable.' We celebrate mistakes” (42:00). “I want to see [my students'] mistakes. I love their mistakes. We'll learn from them” (43:00). “Schools should be fun. The number one thing should be that schools are fun” (45:25). “Choice is a way to entertain kids” (46:15). “Every single day, every lesson I teach, there has to be a reason why kids are excited to do it. And that is the only reason I have been successful as a teacher” (46:30). “I make kids love coming to school and it solves all my problems” (46:50). “In my mind, there is always a competition” (52:00). “My competition in the classroom, and there is a lot of it, is almost always centered around effort and kindness” (53:55). “Constantly look to expand rather than contract” (58:10). “Whenever someone invites me to do something new, I always say yes even if it sounds terrible because it's an opportunity to expand my life, and if I don't like it, I'll just close that door and move on to something else” (58:15). “I'm shameless” (1:02:55).   Additionally, you can find all of Matthew's info, including links to purchase all of his books, on his website. You can also go to storyworthymd.com to find courses and other free materials to learn how to become a better storyteller. Thank you so much to Matthew for coming on the podcast! Lez Hang Out | A Lesbian Podcast

ICYMI, Lez Hang Out will be taking a bit of a different direction with our Should've Been Gays this season in support of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. While this means you will be hearing a bit less about movies and TV shows for a while, don't fret, because we can make absolutely anything gay. —--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Since September is essentially Halloween Eve, let's get spooky in here! This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about Neil Gaiman's Coraline, a dark fantasy children's novel published in 2002 and later adapted into a film by the same name. You may be more familiar with the movie than the book, but trust us- the book is somehow even more queer!  Coraline herself is an extremely queer-coded child. She is always scheming up some wild adventure. Her only friends are literally a talking cat and her super eccentric queer neighbors (Wybie does not exist in the book which is another reason it is queerer than the film). As Coraline explores more and gets to know her gay neighbors, the portal to the other world opens. When she crawls through everything is nearly the same, but different in the way that it is at least 20x gayer and much more appealing to Coraline than her usual world where her parents don't have time for her and don't seem to understand her.  In this other world lives The Other Mother, also known as the Beldam (a drag queen name if we've ever seen one). Although The Other Mother is a terrifying nightmare monster, there is something very intriguing and appealing about her to all of the gays with mommy issues (so basically all of us). She gives Coraline everything that her own parents wouldn't as a way to lure her deeper into her trap. Then, the Beldam throws Coraline into a closet that she has to escape from, the door to which is literally a mirror. The queer symbolism is just leaping off the pages at this point. As Coraline discovers more about the other world and about herself as a result, her real parents go missing, hidden away by The Other Mother. This other world has opened Coraline's mind to so many wondrous and magical possibilities, but at the cost of her family. Heather covers the beloved graphic novel Coraline, while Jeff will be breaking down the Netflix ghost story I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House.  After a casual synopsis of each work, Heather and Jeff share their analyses and recommendations for similar films and books you might enjoy if you like spooky stories. In this episode, spooky was taken as a broad idea of paranormal, supernatural, or scary stories. Directed by Oz Perkins, I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House is a tense, psychological movie with very high contrast in dark scenes, and sterile brightness in day light.  Starring Ruth Wilson, Bob Balaban, Lucy Boynton, and Paulina Prentiss, the scares that come from this ghost story are built on anxiety and fear of the unknown.  This is the perfect movie for Halloween season, especially for viewers who aren't too keen on movies with gore or jump scares. Fun fact: Director Osgood (Oz) Perkins is the son of Anthony Perkins, the original actor who portrayed Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho 1960 Coraline, written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by P. Craig Russell, is a young adult graphic novel following the life of young teenager Coraline.  The titular character is faced with being held hostage in an alternate reality by the “Other Mother” for all eternity, unless she can release the souls of her family and of ghost children stuck in the Other World.  Heather notes the award winning achievements of this story, even learning about it first in college where it was part of a young adult fiction course.  Did you know? The name Coraline was a typo from writer Neil Gaiman.  He liked the sound so much he kept it in the book, replacing the intended name Caroline. Tune in to hear Jeff and Heather's candid thoughts on the masterpiece scenes of each spooky story, how I Am The Pretty Thing Who Lives In The House and Coraline compare, and how Jeff and Heather relate to aspects of each. This week we welcome Jen Brister to The Pleasure Podcast. She's a critically acclaimed stand up comedian, actor and author of the frank and funny book The Other Mother. I saw it at the Edinburgh Fringe this year and she blew my woollen socks off.We speak to Jen about her first book ‘The Other Mother', an honest, funny memoir in which she describes her experience of being a gay non-biological ‘other mother' to her twin boys. Jen speaks to us about what happens when the reality of your sexuality comes face to face with your childhood dreams of parenthood, about gay visibility within the entertainment industry, kissing in public, the financial and emotional cost of IVF and the division of labour when raising two babies in a same sex relationship.Jen is one of my favourite comedians and she makes us laugh a lot whilst tackling issues that are pertinent to everyone, no matter what sort of family you have. You can get your copy of The Other Mother published by Square Peg now at all good book stores. Her latest show Under Privilege will be touring the UK in 2020. It explores the meaning of privilege and what it's like as a lesbian to raise two young boys whilst putting two fingers up at the patriarchy. The School of Movies Archive

[School of Movies 2017] A commissioned show from Joel Robinson, this is the first of the LAIKA studio movies.  Written by Neil Gaiman of Sandman fame, Coraline is the story of a girl dissatisfied with her boring parents and finding her way into a strange pocket universe, and a mirror of her new house, itself containing a woman who claims to be her "Other Mother". This film has, what I like to call a "Twisted sumptuousness", and Sharon and I delve into the many details hidden throughout.
