This week on Terror Talk Podcast, we're diving headfirst into the true crime case that inspired the 1995 film To Die For. That's right—we're talking about the real-life story of Pamela Smart, her controversial trial, and how it all morphed into Gus Van Sant's icy, satirical thriller starring Nicole Kidman as the unforgettable Suzanne Stone. We break down:The parallels between Suzanne and PamelaWhy Suzanne's narcissism is chef's kiss for dark character studyPsychological diagnoses we'd slap on this femme fataleThis one's a blend of film love, forensic curiosity, and commentary with a side of smirk.Pamela Smart case, To Die For movie analysis, Suzanne Stone psychology, female narcissist film character, Nicole Kidman To Die For, true crime inspiration movies, criminal psychology podcast, psychological film breakdown, female manipulation on screen, true crime meets pop cultureInstagram: @terrortalkpodcastYouTube: TerrorTalk PodcastFacebook: Halloween All Year LongTikTok: @dark.psychology.girlsOriginal music featured in this episode is by Mannequin Uprising. #TerrorTalkPodcast #TrueCrimePodcast #PsychologyPodcast #FilmPsychology #NicoleKidman #PodcastRecommendations #TrueCrimeJunkie#PamelaSmartCase #ToDieForMovie #SuzanneStone #FemalePsychopaths #NarcissisticCharacters #CriminalPsychology #TrueCrimeMovies #NicoleKidmanFans #TrueCrimeVsFiction
The Second Part in our Brothers Brought Low Trilogy How could there ever be a cult classic for a wide release starring Uma Thurman? Wouldn't everyone pause to gaze at her beauty and charisma? Of course as I type up these very show notes I'm reminded of finally catching up with EVEN COWGIRLS GET THE BLUES and being horrified at what my favorite screen goddess did which nearly RUINED the career of one Gus Van Sant before he could make his 1998 classic PSYCHO. But as the chosen film (I'm getting to it) GATTACA shows us... nobody's perfect. Even Ethan Hawke. Especially Ethan Hawke when he shares the screen with Jude Law. Enjoy! It's Mita's turn to pick, and when tasked with picking a movie that starts with "T", she goes all camp and picks Gus Van Sant's "To Die For" for the next movie review. Nadeem and movie do the unexpected: they watch a bunch of other movies.
It's physical media time with Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski guiding you through this week's releases which includes a pair of late indie staples from the ‘80s now in 4K. There's a pair of John Candy comedies from the same decade, Burt Reynolds directing a comedy about suicide and one about the life of Frances Farmer. Pick your poison in Richard Dreyfuss directing porn (within the movie) and the unspeakable horrors of Roger Corman mutant rapists. Keanu Reeves is a demon hunter and David Fincher gets upgrades for his underrated B-movie thriller and the origin story of another demon. 0:00 - Intro 2:37 - Criterion (Crossing Delancey 4K, Drugstore Cowboy 4K) 19:24 - Kino (Summer Rental, Uncle Buck 4K, Frances) 41:13 - MGM (Inserts, The End, Uptown Girls) 1:01:51 - Shout (Humanoids from the Deep 4K) 1:13:16 - Warner (Constantine 4K) 1:21:52 - Sony (Panic Room 4K, The Social Network 4K) 1:41:21 – New Theatrical Titles On Blu-ray (Last Summer, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, Nosferatu, The Order, September 5, Weekend at Taipei) 1:46:15 – New Blu-ray Announcements

Actress and filmmaker Heather Graham joins The Art of Kindness with Robert Peterpaul to discuss acts of kindness throughout her lengthy career, how her new film Chosen Family helped her learn to keep people pleasing under control, holding unconditional self-love and more. HEATHER GRAHAM discovered her passion for acting at an early age and caught the attention of filmmakers with her breakout role in Gus Van Sant's DRUGSTORE COWBOY, for which she received an Independent Spirit Award nomination. Graham went on to land unforgettable roles in the 1997 classic BOOGIE NIGHTS, for which she received the MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance, in 1999's AUSTIN POWERS: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME and in 2009's THE HANGOVER alongside Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifinakis. Graham has expanded into writing, directing, and producing, proving herself to be a multi-hyphenate leading talent with critically acclaimed, HALF MAGIC, a film she wrote and directed, which was released in theaters and on VOD February 2018. The raunchy, female-driven comedy follows three women set out on a hilarious search for self-fulfillment while overcoming the roadblocks in their personal and professional lives. Graham also executive produced and starred in the feature film CAKE, a romantic comedy also starring Sandra Oh and Cheryl Hines. That self-fulfillment theme, along with a throughline of people pleasing is prevalent in her latest flick - CHOSEN FAMILY. Graham wrote, directed, and starred in the rom-com, which debuted in 2024. This movie is a centerpiece to today's conversation, along with kindness, of course. In addition to more producing, up next, Graham will be featured alongside Nicolas Cage in the Western THE GUNSLINGERS. Sinema Kulübü'müzün 16ıncı buluşmasında yönetmenliğini Gus Van Sant'in yaptığı, başrollerinde Matt Damon, Robin Williams ve Ben Affleck'in oynadıkları 1997 yılı yapımı Good Will Hunting filmini konuştuk. Türkçe'ye Can Dostum olarak çevrildi. Will'in kilidini açacak olan ise Sean Maguire yani Robin Williams olur. Bu bölümde görüşlerine yer verebildiğim arkadaşlarım(02:42) Yelda Erdoğan, (04:35) Yasemin Karakaya Arslan, (06:54) Elif Burcu Yılmaz, (09:32) Seda Diril Boyraz, (11:20) Mete Yurtsever ve Sezgin İldeş, (12:16) Özden Duymaz, (12:59) Yasemin Karakaya Arslan, (14:17) Sezgin İldeş, (17:23) Yelda Erdoğan, (20:37) Yasemin Karakaya Arslan, (23:27) Sezgin İldeşSupport the show

This week the hosts discuss one of Josh's favorite movies, 1978's The Eyes of Laura Mars. From wiki: “Eyes of Laura Mars is a 1978 American neo-noir supernatural horror[3] thriller film directed by Irvin Kershner and starring Faye Dunaway, Tommy Lee Jones, Brad Dourif, René Auberjonois, and Raul Julia. It follows a New York City fashion photographer (Dunaway) who suddenly develops the clairvoyant ability to witness disturbing serial murders from the point of view of the killer. The screenplay was adapted (in collaboration with David Zelag Goodman) from a spec script titled Eyes, written by John Carpenter; it was Carpenter's first major studio film. H. B. Gilmour later wrote a novelization.”Also discussed: Hawaii, Sasquatch Sunset, Luca Guadagnino's Queer, My Own Private Idaho and the career of Gus Van Sant, American giallo, Jon Peters, Faye Dunaway, Shampoo, Personal Shopper, Blood and Black Lace, The September Issue, capelets and ponchos, Barfly, The Towering Inferno, Puzzle of a Downfall Child, Brian De Palma, NEXT WEEK: Morgiana (1972) Follow them across the internet: Bloodhaus:https://www.bloodhauspod.com/https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/ Drusilla Adeline:https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/https://letterboxd.com/sisterhyde/https://www.instagram.com/sister__hyde/ Joshua Conkelhttps://www.joshuaconkel.com/https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/https://letterboxd.com/JoshuaConkel/https://bsky.app/profile/joshuaconkel.bsky.social

Today we're joined by critic Steve Erickson for two films that dared to dramatize the 1999 Columbine massacre—both in 2003, barely four years after the tragedy. Ben Coccio's ZERO DAY and Gus Van Sant's ELEPHANT each encountered controversy, though only one would win the Palme D'Or while the other is now mainly available on YouTube. We'll talk about the films' very different approaches to one of the 20th century's defining tragedies, and where (or if) we draw the line between insight and exploitation. Claire and Gavia discuss Gus Van Sant's iconic queer drama My Own Private Idaho (1991), loosely based on Shakespeare's Henriad plays. River Phoenix stars as a hustler in Portland, Oregan, who sets off on a journey across America and then the world in search of his long-lost mother, accompanied by best friend and fellow hustler Keanu Reeves.
https://notesonfilm1.com/2024/11/17/the-gus-van-sant-podcast-no-6-michael-j-glass-on-good-will-hunting-1997/ Michael J. Glass joins me for a discussion of Gus Van Sant's GOOD WILL HUNTING (1997), a blockbuster success in its day; a film that won Robin Williams an Oscar, made stars of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and left a big cultural imprint. It's since been much parodied (in COMMUNITY, THE SIMPSONS, all over youtube) and a dominant critical perspective is slightly sniffy on the film: filmmaking by numbers and committees on a ‘we need a job' script. We found it an extremely easy watch that holds up and is even more interesting on second viewing. GOOD WILL HUNTING is an effective piece that is surprising in all kinds of ways and still works. We discuss its critique of the US, its focus on class, on abuse, on the fragility of young men. Its rare to see a film that dramatizes how American foreign policy is one of extraction and exploitation and how social mobility in the US is available only to geniuses with sponsorship. We also discuss whether how Van Sant film and what he focusses on might be connected to sexual identity.

A sa sortie, Will Hunting plait beaucoup. I very much wanted to speak to the wonderful Richard Drew about TO DIE FOR (Gus Van Sant, 1995). Richard has a degree in Film and Literature so knows something about film, yet unusually for the guests on this podcast, he is not a Gus Van Sant fan. More importantly, Richard is a television producer, now based in Los Angeles, but who got his start on the ground floor of Reality TV in England and has worked on BIG BROTHER, SECOND SURVIVOR, FAME ACADEMY, and many more. He is now SVP of Development at Law and Crime Productions, specialising in True Crime Documentaries. His latest work, JAILBREAK: LOVE ON THE RUN is currently on Netlfix. All of this to say he is ideally suited to speak to the film's main themes. In the podcast we discuss how TO DIE FOR draws on the talk show culture of the era (Oprah, Geraldo, Sally Jesse Raphael, Phil Donahue) as well as the rise of celebrity culture in print (PEOPLE, US) and Television (ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT). It's a film that's very much about not only a grasping for fame, but for television and televisual fame. We talk of the performances, the film's form and structure, how it's a story complexly told but in a manner that's experienced as simple and direct. All this and much more can be heard in the podcast above:
https://notesonfilm1.com/2024/10/28/the-gus-van-sant-podcast-no-4-lisa-purse-on-even-cowgirls-get-the-blues-1993/ Lisa Purse on EVEN COWGIRLS GET THE BLUES (Gus Van Sant, 1993) I was truly delighted when Lisa Purse agreed to talk to me about EVEN COWGIRLS GET THE BLUES. Lisa is a Professor of Film Studies at Reading University, one of the most brilliant scholars on action movies, and a nuanced thinker on questions of mediations, conflicts, identities. I wanted to have her on the podcast because I thought she might expand my thinking on EVEN COWGIRLS GET THE BLUES, and she did. In the podcast we discuss seeing the film when it was first released, seeing it now, and explore the hows and whys of changing responses. We note the context of ‘New Queer Cinema' and the different kinds of experiments that were then taking place. EVEN COWGIRLS GET THE BLUES is a film that refuses seriousness and we speculate that maybe neither of us was then in a place where we could recognise the value of that. We discuss how the film continues Van Sant's interest in ‘The Road', and discuss movement and flow, as rhythm, narrative device, formal strategy, and condensed ideation. Is it a film that's trying to do much? B. Ruby Rich wrote on how the film contains references to forms of collective action. Is it more of its time than we first realised? We discuss the film as a form of active allyship that is not to be sneezed at, and note the hostility of its initial reception, refencing B. Ruby Rich's contention that with this film Van Sant fell into the category of a female director (at least for some) and therefore got treated as one.

The window for our Winter Commissions season is now open. Coming up this October we have shows on the first two Psycho films, (as well as touching on the ill-advised Gus Van Sant 1998 remake of the Hitchcock original.) Then a long-planned episode discussing the Horror genre in a new light. And finally on Halloween, we got us a hot, steaming bowl of Beetlejuice. Following that we have Nolan-Vember, from the makers of Cloon-June. Sharon and I will be talking about four of his films on the Main Event feed: Memento, The Prestige, Inception, Interstellar, and on the Patreon bonus feed we will have After School Clubs on Tenet, Insomnia, Following and Dunkirk. Then in December we are going back to the animated X-Men with shows about ‘97 and maybe more. So that leaves January open for four episodes chosen by four of you. Again, the standard fee is $150 for a movie, more for TV, comics or video games because of the increased time and energy investment. And as always, it's not first come, first served, it's the four we think will make for the best shows. These places tend to fill up very fast, usually within a few days, so get in touch via email, Patreon messaging, Discord, or even twitter, if anybody still uses that hellsite. And we can negotiate these shows into reality.
In August of 1999, two best friends, David Coughlin and Raffi Kodikian, set off for a short overnight hike in Carlsbad Canyons, New Mexico. Five days later, only one of them would be found alive. This is the shockingly strange but true story of a two men entering Rattlesnake Canyon and only one man leaving. What makes this case even more heartbreaking is the fact that both men combined to keep a detailed journal describing their ordeal -- including how it ended in murder. [School of Movies 2024] For this rather special episode, we firstly welcome to the show for the first time, director Alfred Hitchcock, as we examine his most famous and most revisited film, Psycho (1960). This became the wellspring from which modern-day detective thrillers emerged. But it also has tangled roots in Horror and the grubby stepchild of its sub-genres, the slasher. While other films like Charles Laughton's Night of the Hunter (1955) and John Lee Thompson's Cape Fear (1962) -both weirdly starring Robert Mitchum- were also hugely important, Psycho was less about the stalking killer as it was a torrid dive into the swampy waters of their mind. Deriving from a 1959 novel by Robert Bloch, who lived down the road from Ed Gein as he was being arrested for trying to make a woman-suit, this story, along with Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) and Thomas Harris' Silence of the Lambs (1988) assisted greatly in the lurid, pulp sensationalism of the twisted deviant killer-man-in-a-dress mythology. Despite quiet, clear, firm, researched and experienced protestations from trans folk and their allies who keep having to remind the world at large that they aren't toilet-lurking monsters. We also look at the stunningly ill-advised shot-for-shot remake of the Hitchcock film, directed in 1998 by Gus Van Sant. Superficially, these are exactly the same film, but the devil is in the details. Next week we will be returning to Bates Motel with the far less well-known, but actually pretty good Psycho II, which more pronouncedly paints Norman as a victim.
The new movie Longlegs is a psychological horror film that follows FBI Agent Lee Harker as she investigates a series of mysterious murder-suicides. The victims, all families, leave behind cryptic messages signed "Longlegs." As Harker delves deeper into the case, she uncovers a dark connection to the occult and must confront a terrifying supernatural entity. For cinematographer Andrés Arochi, technical mastery is key, but it's always in service to the story. “It has to come from something inside you that says, 'I want to create this' and then you find a technical way to do it,” he says. “For me it's always trying to be true to that instinct and to whatever feels right, and when you do it, then you're talking about yourself so it's easy to see yourself reflected.” Longlegs is Andrés' first international feature. For the past 12 years, Andrés has been working as a DP in Mexico. With no formal training, he began taking photos of friends in the music scene at age 17. Soon, he began creating projection video displays for concerts and shooting music videos and commercials. This led to work on huge music video and film sets as an on-set photographer, where he met Mexican cinematographers Guillermo Garza (the cinematographer of The Thicket), Alexis Zabé and Galo Olivares. Standing next to these skilled DPs with his camera in hand allowed Andrés to learn alongside them, and he would watch and ask questions, often copying their settings on his camera to experiment. In his spare time, Andrés would go out and practice the new techniques he learned, shooting low-budget films and music videos for friends. Fellow Mexican cinematographer Galo Olivares shot director Osgood Perkins' Gretel and Hansel, and he introduced Andrés to Perkins when the director was looking for a DP for Longlegs. Andrés was drawn to the humor in the Longlegs script, and loved that some comedy existed, even within a horror film. Unlike a lot of cinematographers and directors, Andrés and Perkins didn't create a lookbook or speak in depth about filmic references, such as Silence of the Lambs and Se7en, which were influences for Longlegs. Instead, Andrés says, “When we did talk about movies, it was more movies that had nothing to do with the genre. We talked a lot about My Own Private Idaho, Drugstore Cowboy—a lot of Gus Van Sant 1990s indie America filmmaking. Elephant was an influence on the way we used Steadicam.” One artistic reference Andrés used was The Son of Man by artist René Magritte, a painting showing a man with his face hidden by an apple. Andrés loved the idea of keeping the face of Longlegs the killer hidden at first. Andrés chose to shoot on 35mm film and in a 4:3 aspect ratio for parts of Longlegs that take place in the 1970's. “Using film changes the emotion. Everyone stays focused and shooting on film makes it necessary for everyone to rehearse. So, I decided to shoot 35mm for everything in the 1970s and go with a 4:3 aspect ratio, then we did 2.39 and shot on digital with the Alexa Mini LF for the 1990s.” During the Longlegs shoot, director Osgood Perkins wanted the film crew to use their creativity. “Oz was always encouraging the whole team, like do what you feel, you understand the movie we're doing, just do the best version of you,” says Andrés. “So I was very, very inspired, and that created the space for us to create from our hearts using the best tools we had.” Find Andrés Arochi:http://www.andresarochi.com/selected Instagram: @andresarochi Sponsored by Hot Rod Cameras: https://hotrodcameras.com/ Sponsored by Aputure: https://www.aputure.com/ The Cinematography Podcast website: www.camnoir.com Facebook: @cinepod Instagram: @thecinepod Twitter: @ShortEndz

Today we welcome Letterboxd's own Swartacus for the 2nd edition of our CANNES-TASTROPHES series. The Cannes film festival is the most prestigious of its kind in the world, and these films had premieres so disastrous that hundreds booed and even fled the theater. First up is Vincent Gallo's scandalous 2003 art film THE BROWN BUNNY, which Roger Ebert famously declared the worst film in Cannes' history (sparking a legendary feud with the director). Then we see whether that label REALLY applies to our second candidate, Gus Van Sant's universally panned, Matthew McConaughey-starring mush THE SEA OF TREES. This week your hosts Mark, Matt & associate producer Amy Nelson strap on their cowboy boots to discuss My Own Private Idaho! The 1991 American independent adventure drama film written and directed by Gus Van Sant. Idaho is considered a landmark film in New Queer Cinema, an early 1990s movement in queer-themed independent filmmaking. The film is notable for its then-taboo subject matter and avant-garde style. Zac Posen is an internationally acclaimed fashion designer whose designs have been worn by Natalie Portman, Oprah Winfrey, former First Lady Michelle Obama, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Rihanna, among many others. Posen is known for his fine craftsmanship and glamorous gowns, and powerful women have historically sought him out to dress them for significant moments in their lives. Because of this, it only made sense that Ryan Murphy and Gus Van Sant called upon Posen while developing FX's Feud: Capote vs. the Swans to craft costumes for the reimagining of a real-life event: Truman Capote's 1966 Black and White Ball. He's giving us all the details about how he walked the line between historical accuracy and his signature stylistic flair to create showstopping looks for all of Feud's leading ladies.
