Next week: Bound (1996)---------------------------------------------------Key sources and links for this episode:"The Enduring Power of My Own Private Idaho" (OUT Magazine)"My Own Private Idaho is a Queer Masterpiece" (The Ringer)Interview with Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix (Interview Magazine)"My Own Private Idaho: Private Places" (Criterion)

Planet Terror (2007) Directed by Robert Rodriguez Starring: Rose McGowan, Freddy Rodriguez, Josh Brolin, Jeff FaheyIf you haven't seen Planet Terror yet, Sean has a message for you: turn this podcast off right now and go watch it. We'll wait. This week on Dewey Pod Monster, we're diving deep into Robert Rodriguez's gloriously unhinged 2007 grindhouse masterpiece — a movie about zombie mutants, a go-go dancer with a machine gun for a leg, and somehow the best barbecue scene ever committed to film. John has seen this thing approximately 15 times in a theater (yes, really), and Sean just watched it for the first time and immediately felt like an idiot for waiting this long. The result is one of the most enthusiastic, borderline unhinged episode we've recorded. In this episode, we discuss:Go-Go, Not Stripper — The level of detail Rodriguez packed into this movie is insane, and John will correct you on the terminology. We break down why Planet Terror works as both a loving grindhouse homage AND as a legitimately great horror-comedy, and why so many modern movies fail to pull off what this one does effortlessly.Jeff Fahey Tastes His Own Blood and Gives Zero F*s — We make the case that Jeff Fahey is the unsung MVP of this film and the entire Rodriguez universe. The man is covered in wounds, tasting his own blood dripping into his barbecue sauce, and somehow STILL delivering the performance of a lifetime. He deserved an award. He got nothing. We're still mad.The Kid Shoots Himself and We Laughed. Sorry. — Rodriguez had the absolute audacity to telegraph exactly what was going to happen and then do it anyway, and somehow it's one of the funniest moments in the movie. We discuss why it works, why we're both going to hell, and why the movie is smart enough not to dwell on it.The Missing Reel is Cinema — The sex scene that cuts to everything being on fire is a stroke of genius, and we get into why Rodriguez's use of fake film damage and missing reels is more than just a gimmick — it's the best scene transition in the whole damn movie. We Also Talked About:At the Video Store (2019) (Amazon) — A nostalgic documentary about the death of video store culture featuring John Waters, Bill Hader, Gus Van Sant, and Todd Haynes. Sean's watched a suspicious number of these. The Last Ride (1991) (Tubi) — An AIP gem where a crazed truck driver terrorizes a recently released ex-con. Everyone is dubbed. The best line involves a shit pot. It's incredible.Massacre in Dinosaur Valley (1985) (Tubi) — An Italian jungle adventure featuring an alligator that genuinely does not want to be in this movie. The quicksand looks like oatmeal. John watched it before a Tigers game.Against the Dark (2009) (Tubi) — Steven Seagal in a trench coat "fighting" vampire zombies. Keith David shows up to collect a check. John stayed awake for all 90 minutes and regrets nothing and everything.Untold: The Jail Blazers (Netflix) — The chaotic story of the early 2000s Portland Trail Blazers. John doesn't really follow basketball but watched the whole thing. It's an easy hour. Some of the above links are affiliate links — if you purchase through them we get a small kickback, and it's the best way to support the show.New episodes of the Dewey Pod Monster podcast drop every week. It's time to take a sentimental journey to the video store. Our first pic from the cult section is Gus Van Sant's game changing second film, Drugstore Cowboy (1989). Join me as I re-watch with the eyes of a world weary adult, vs the teenaged gaze I first cast on this black comedy about a gang of junkies who rob drug stores, because that's where the drugs are. What did kids internalize about heroin and glamor from stylish films such as this, and does this film pass the Truth & Beauty test? Will drugs kill you? Let's find out!JOIN PATREON! Critic Emma Jones tells us why “Dead Man's Wire” plays to the director's strengths, with Bill Skarsgard and Colman Domingo mixed up in a chaotic kidnapping inspired by a true story which took place in the 1970s. We discuss the BAFTA-winning performance from Robert Aramayo, as he plays campaigner John Davidson, a man suffering from Tourette's syndrome. Director Gore Verbinski returns with his riff on AI and technological dystopia, with Sam Rockwell and Juno Temple leading the charge. And the “Ready or Not” horror scenario returns for a sequel, bringing in Sarah Michelle Gellar and Kathryn Newton for a blood-soaked caper.

The Ides of ReMarch are upon us! And now that we have discussed both the good and the bad kinds of horror remakes, it's time to delve into the inexplicable: the 1998 “replica” of PSYCHO!! Here to help us make sense of the nonsensical is stand-up comedian and horror lover Kristen Cills!! We're asking the big questions, like why did Gus Van Sant blow his post-Good Will Hunting blank check on this project? Is Psycho a better movie when you can almost see Viggo Mortensen's pubes? Why is half the cast dressed like it's 1960, and the rest look like they walked off of a Blur music video? What is the Small Soldiers Behind-The-Scenes Experience? With the pantheon of interesting actors making films at the time, why was Vince Vaughn the first choice for Norman Bates? What does work about this film, and why?! All this, plus Universal's cursed (and blessed) 1998, watching Psycho as you make Psycho, losing to A Big's Life, the buried secrets on Patrick's ancient DVD, wet flapping meat sounds, and a soon-to-be-classic version of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! Gary Knight is a legendary commercial editor and partner at Cut+Run whose work spans iconic spots for brands like Adidas, American Express, and Chase. In this episode, Gary traces his journey from rubber-numbering film cans as a teenage runner in Soho to becoming a sought-after storyteller in the edit bay. We dig into the craft of editing—taste vs. tools, why watching all the footage still matters, how to find the right tone and tempo, and the power of happy accidents. Gary shares candid stories about collaborating with directors like Gus Van Sant, shaping music-driven montages, handling shrinking timelines and "too many notes," and why true respect for the process starts with trust, curiosity, and a love of the work. Justin Scoviak of POP CULTURE REFLECTIONS PODCAST joins me to give me an education on the legend of Elliott Smith. A revered singer/songwriter, Gus Van Sant took Elliott aboard the soundtrack of his movie "Good Will Hunting", which brought Elliott an Oscar nomination. He also performed at the awards broadcast. Is Elliott's music sad or uplifting? What's with artists who hate fame? Was he murdered? All of this and also some 90's throwback fun.

Snakes! Why did it have to be snakes? Because St. Patrick's Day was earlier this week, and to celebrate the man who drove all the snakes out of Ireland ("you alright in the back there, lads?") this week's Empire Podcast sees Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and Beth Webb discuss some of their favourite snake moments in films. Or fillums. Then, our intrepid quartet get their parseltongues into the week's deluge of movie news, including the Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Dune Part 3 trailers, and they look back at the Oscars as well. Reviews-wise, Phil Lord & Chris Miller's Project Hail Mary, Radio Silence's Ready Or Not: Here I Come, Ugo Bienvenu's Arco, and Gus Van Sant's Dead Man's Wire are given the once-over, while the wonderful Lord and Miller are this week's guests, sitting down for a lovely natter about puppets, space, and much more with Chris. Um þessar mundir má sjá í kvikmyndahúsum þrjár myndir með þremur mismunandi Skarsgård í aðalhlutverkum. Hinn 74 ára Stellan leikur í norsku óskarsmyndinni Affeksjonsverdi, elsti sonur hans Alexander leikur í BDSM-homma-rómantíkinni Pillion og annar sonur, Bill, leikur í spennumynd leikstjórans Gus Van Sant, Dead Man's Wire. Reyndar eru allt í allt sex synir Stellans Skarsgård virkir í leiklistinni. Við forvitnumst um þessa miklu leikarafjölskyldu. Ástin er formlega orðinn faraldur. Eiríkur Örn Norðdahl fjallar um það hvernig ástarsagan, það sem á ensku er kallað romance novel, er smám saman að leggja undir sig heiminn. Og svo kíkjum við á Kabarett í Þjóðleikhúskjallaranum. Leikhópur ókunnuga fólksins í leikstjórn Bjarts Örns Bachmann frumsýnir Kabarett næstkomandi föstudag. Söngleikurinn er byggður á leikriti sem er byggt á endurminningum frá Berlinarárum ungs rithöfundar. Weimar lýðveldið er við það að líða undir lok, Adolf Hitler er vinsæll pólitíkus, hægrimenn og vinstrimenn berjast á götum úti, samtímis dunar jazzinn í klúbbum borgarinnar.

Of course Brian's picking one of the few "gay" movies of the 90s for his birthday episode. Starring Keanu Reeves and the late-great River Phoenix, "Idaho" was an indie hit in 1991, its box office quadrupling its budget. But, just how gay is Gus Van Sant's male sex worker opus by today's standards? And is this movie a road trip, a love story, a docudrama, a Shakespearian tragedy or something else? Gabby Osio Vanden and Jack Weisman join the show after winning Sundance's Grand Jury Prize to unpack the ten-year road behind Nuisance Bear, a polar bear's journey through two connected worlds: tourist-heavy Churchill, Manitoba, and the Inuit community of Arviat, where the stakes are far more complex and far less welcoming. The film becomes a meditation on coexistence, control, and who gets labeled a “nuisance” in a shared landscape. We dig into craft and access: finding the right position for the camera so the story can reveal itself, structuring the feature in two halves, and how a dialogue-free short film born partly out of COVID constraints became the proof of concept that unlocked TIFF, The New Yorker, and eventually A24. They also talk candidly about what the audience never sees: rough living conditions, long hours waiting, the specific agony of “the best thing happened, and we missed it,” and the slow but important work of earning trust, where listening comes before filming. They share influences that shaped them, including Miyazaki's sense of nature and modernity, Gus Van Sant's bravery with form, and John Cassavetes' belief in the energy of a set. The conversation closes on what it meant to experience Sundance as both a career peak and a personal milestone, getting engaged and then married during the festival. Advice to filmmakers: be tenacious when you know you need to tell a story, protect trust like it is part of the craft, and do not turn on each other when the pressure spikes. What Movies Are You Watching? This episode is brought to you by BeastGrip. On this episode, we break down DEAD MAN'S WIRE, Gus Van Sant's gripping new film based on the real-life 1977 Tony Kiritsis hostage standoff. We dive into Van Sant's restrained direction, the film's slow-burn tension, and how it uses true crime to explore the fight for justice, corruption, and the violence baked into American spectacle. Does it say anything about America's appetite for real-time trauma as entertainment? It's trying to, but does it get there? That's the real question. While we wish the film was more impactful thematically, DEAD MAN'S WIRE fits wonderfully within Gus Van Sant's career — from his fascination with outsiders to his continued interest in moral ambiguity and systems of power. Even without Al Pacino's name in its cast list, the new Dead Man's Wire would invite comparisons to Dog Day Afternoon in its dramatization of a real-life 1970s hostage situation turned public spectacle. Whether it benefits from comparisons to Sidney Lumet's 1975 crime classic is another question, one we take up in our discussion of Gus Van Sant's first new feature in eight years. After that, we bring Dog Day Afternoon back in for Connections, to consider how these two films about volatile, narcissistic men and their ostensibly populist schemes fit into the proud tradition of amateur-hour crime movies, and whether a modern film depicting Indianapolis half a century ago has any hope of evoking its setting the way Lumet captured contemporary 1970s New York. In adapting the true story about a '70s hostage crisis that played out on television and in the public eye, Gus Van Sant's new Dead Man's Wire is just asking to be compared to 1975's Dog Day Afternoon — and who are we to resist an invitation to talk about yet another Sidney Lumet classic? So this week we revisit a film we have all previously seen and admired, but still has the ability to surprise with its unconventional approach to a bank robbery gone wrong, from its persistent sense of humor to its shifting perspective on Al Pacino's criminal protagonist. Then in Feedback, we continue the conversation about our podcast's namesake film, and answer a recurring question about our archives. Based on a true story, the 1977 kidnapping of a prominent banker grips the nation and turns the abductor into an outlaw folk hero. As the media frenzy peaks, the standoff becomes a spectacle of desperation, defiance and blurred justice, which resonates even today. The film stars Bill Skarsgård in the main role as Tony Kiritsis, alongside an ensemble cast that includes Dacre Montgomery, Cary Elwes, Myha’la, Colman Domingo, and Al Pacino. “Dead Man’s Wire” opens Friday, January 9th in select theaters and then goes wide nationally on Friday, January 16th. https://youtu.be/42O-lJfP5Lw
Mike talks with Alan Berry and Mark Enochs, the filmmakers behind Dead Man's Line, a chilling dive into one of America's most disturbing true-crime stories. The conversation traces how the directors reconstructed the life and legend of Tony Kiritsis, whose 1977 hostage standoff transfixed the nation and blurred the line between media spectacle and lived horror.Berry and Enochs unpack their research, ethical choices, and the challenge of shaping archival chaos into a tense, humane documentary. They also discuss the struggles for distribution and the obligatory Hollywood remake, Dead Man's Wire, the 2026 release from director Gus Van Sant and writer Austin Kolodney.Watch the full-length documentary, Dead Man's Line, for free on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUcZXVT6888Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth
Filmmaker Gus Van Sant joins Bill Maher for a candid conversation that pulls back the curtain on what it really takes to survive in Hollywood. Van Sant opens up about the scrappy, crowdfunded reality behind Dead Man's Wire, studio politics, and why critics may have saved his career. The two dig into his iconic films (Drugstore Cowboy, My Own Private Idaho, To Die For, Psycho) and trace the lineage of comedy from Lenny Bruce to Saturday Night Live – along with the strange psychology of actors and directors on set, including a jaw-dropping story about literally throwing rocks to get a performance. In front of an audience at the Miami Film Festival's GEMS event, the trailblazing filmmaker reflects on helping to usher in New Queer Cinema with 'Mala Noche' and 'My Own Private Idaho'; subsequently jumping between mainstream films, like 'Good Will Hunting' and 'Milk,' and experimental works, like 'Elephant'; why he came close to directing, but did not direct, 'Brokeback Mountain,' 'Call Me by Your Name' and '50 Shades of Grey'; and returning to feature filmmaking, after seven years away, with a film that is set in the '70s but is eerily timely today.
