Christine talks with Alia Joy, author of the book, Glorious Weakness: Discovering God in All We Lack. Alia wonders if weakness is her spiritual gift. You’ll understand what she means when you listen to this conversation. Alia shares about growing up in poverty and how that formed her. She also shares about the day in her teenage years when she decided to take her own life and what happened that saved her life in the literal sense but also the spiritual sense. Although God rescued Alia that day, Alia shares about how knowing God doesn’t magically fix everything. She talks about mental illness and suicidal ideation, explaining what it’s like to live with these things, how she reconciles God’s goodness with ongoing suffering, and what she wants Christians to know about mental illness. Hey welcome to episode 106 of Lighten up with Melanie Dale. BONUS ILLNESS EDITION. I know I said we concluded the Lighten Up with Illness series, and I'm well into working on our next series, Lighten Up about Friendship Over 40, but recently Stephanie Tait ran across my path and she has a new book called The View from Rock Bottom so, I mean, I was dying to talk to her about how she lightens up down there at rock bottom. Stephanie talks about her tenacious 15-year journey to getting diagnosed with Lyme Disease, what it's like living with Lyme, and how she learned to lighten up and let herself have a life in the midst of disability, instead of waiting indefinitely until everything was all better. She asked herself, "What if this is my life...what am I waiting for?" Stephanie is hopeful and real and I know you'll love hanging out with her as much as I did, so listen in and lighten up. Alia Joy is an author who believes the darkness is illuminated when we grasp each other's hand and walk into the night together. She writes poignantly about her life with bipolar disorder as well as grief, faith, marriage, poverty, race, embodiment, and keeping fluent in the language of hope. God's power is made perfect in your weakness. We know the Bible verse, but most of us would rather run from weakness than embrace it. Years ago, Alia might have told you the same. She never expected to write a book about weakness, nor did she expect to wrestle with mental illness, but this journey has put her on a path to be a voice for the hurting, the broken, and the lonely. Her new book Glorious Weakness: Discovering God in All We Lack is meeting people in their place of need and giving them hope that they are not alone. There were so many incredible (and challenging) takeaways from this conversation with Alia. First, she offers a gentle reminder that sometimes our dreams don't include a checklist of things to do. In fact, we should probably question whether results are really the point of any dream. Is God asking you for results or is He asking you for obedience? Alia provides an excellent biblical reminder not to fret, worry about, or covet what someone else has. This is especially true when you encounter others who are pursuing a dream that feels very similar to yours. Guess what? That's not about you. If you feel you can celebrate someone who has a similar dream, then do so. But if you can't without fretting, then unfollow, scroll past, and ask God to help you let go of those feelings. In this episode, you'll also discover the value of finding a quiet place to release the noise of the world. Alia talks about how there can be too much of a good thing (like reading all the books or, for me, attending every last webinar so I can make up for what I think I lack in knowledge). If you're currently feeling alone in your struggles or the pursuit of your God-shaped dream, I promise you, you're not! Today for the finale to our series, Lighten Up about Illness, I'm talking with Alia Joy. You may remember her from episode 99, and now I'm happy to share that her new book, Glorious Weakness: Discovering God in All We Lack, is available now. Today we talk about her bipolar disorder, how it's impacted her life and her kids, and the unpredictability that comes with illness. She says, "I have to be okay with undone things." We talk about what she's learned from bipolar disorder, and Alia says, "Everybody goes through seasons. Mine are just more noticeable...Bipolar is like you're making sandcastles and they're just constantly being swept away." She shares about looking for beauty and wonder in places you'd never expect to find it, and the way she lightens up in the middle of everything is by raising funny kids. We talk about the amazing comedic timing of her kids and the blessings of having a funny family. Through her book and our conversation, Alia is teaching me so much, so grab a fuzzy blanket, get comfy, listen in, and lighten up. Author Alia Joy joins me on the podcast today, to share her powerful story. It's a story of grief, loss, illness, mental health and weakness - but also a story of love, joy and transformation. It's a story of how things don't always work out how we want, they don't always end well, and life isn't always easy - but of how these experiences and stories don't take us away from the divine, but actually draw us closer.  Alia shares her story with great courage and honesty, and it's truly inspirational. It's a story of glorious weakness.

My guest for The Happy Hour # 247 is Alia Joy. Alia is an author and speaker who believes the darkness is illuminated when we grasp each other's hand and walk into the night together. Alia writes poignantly about her life with bipolar disorder as well as grief, faith, marriage, poverty, race, embodiment, and keeping fluent in the language of hope. She lives in Oregon with her husband, her mother, her three kids, a dog, a bunny, and a bunch of chickens. In Alia's book, Glorious Weakness, she puts forth the question, "What if weakness was a spiritual gift?" and you guys, I am so thankful to Alia for coming on the show. Her message is so important and brings great insight into mental illness. Alia shares her story that includes dark places such as abuse, leukemia at age 5, her brother's attempted suicide and her own struggle with suicidal ideation, and her diagnosis with bipolar disorder at age 30. Alia tells us how God made Himself known to her during thoughts of suicide and how He brings hope amidst the struggles she still deals with today. We also talk about when the church treats mental illness as sin and how it can push people to feel as though they must keep it private and alone. I appreciated hearing Alia speak about specific ways we can ask how to best walk alongside those living with mental illness, and that we need to start with having compassion built into mental illness like we have compassion for other illnesses. We also discuss what it's been like parenting her children, and that God loves us in our weakness, meets us in our brokenness, and how that's taught her and her children that "no one is going to meet them the way God can."  Connect with Jamie Facebook // Twitter // Instagram // YouTube Sponsors Nations Photo Lab - use code HAPPYHOUR for 15% off your order Bolster Sleep Company - use code HAPPYHOUR for 10% off Stamps.com -Click on the microphone at the top and enter code HAPPYHOURto get a 4 week free trial plus free postage, and a digital scale. Alia Joy didn't know she had Bipolar Disorder until she was an adult. Married, living life as a homeschooling mom, she'd always thought her manic phase was who she was and she got down sometimes with depression. In this final episode of our Mental Health Series, Alia shares what it's like to live with mental illness. If you've ever wondered what it feels like to be in depression, to have suicidal ideation, or to try to manage regular responsibilities and relationships while living with mental illness, this conversation offers an enlightening perspective. Alia describes sitting in the Wal-Mart parking lot scratching the label off of her first prescription of anti-depressants from shame of the original depression diagnosis. Contrast that to now years later, writing and speaking openly about life with mental illness. Her honesty paired with her ability to articulate her experiences is a priceless combination for those of us wanting to know we are not alone or who want to better understand the experiences of someone we love. In true Open Door Sisterhood fashion, this episode (and entire series) is part practical and part inspirational. We don't want mental health to have a stigma that keeps us from talking about it. It's too important not to dive in, learn, and discuss this life-impacting issue. As Alia says, God is with us whether we feel it or not in this dark place. We don't need to be afraid.
