He shares his vision of a Biblically supported, fully inclusive, loving joyful Christian faith, and its very compelling.
Send us a textHiking has a way of making us more resilient, not so much manifested as strength and persistence, but in developing trust and embracing the unknown. We have a saying in the hiker community, “The Trail Will Provide.” It signifies the aid and assistance hikers encounter on trail, encouraging trust and faith that things will work out.On a section hike of the Continental Divide Trail, Blissful encounters a miracle and realizes that allowing the trail to provide is part of successfully walking a long trail and also living life too. This week my dear friend MJ joins us to share the story of her autism diagnosis, how she first realised she may be autistic, the process of getting her diagnosis, and how her life has changed since. This is a powerful, challenging and encouraging story.
Today I'm joined by author and speaker Alice Hewson to discuss autism in the work place. Alice talks about the challenges of being neurodivergent in the world we live in, which isn't set up for neurodivergent people, and how this can often translate into the work place. She shares her own experiences and also offers some practical ideas for both employers and neurodivergent people themselves, for how neurodivergent people can feel safe and protected in the work place. She also shares some thoughts and examples of how neurodivergent people can build structures and processes which will help them thrive in the work place rather than be overwhelmed, and to avoid potential meltdowns You can read more about this in her book "Neurodiversity in the Workplace" which is available wherever books are sold.
This week, as part of a new series, Dr Amy Maschall PsyD returns to the podcast to talk about people's lived experiences with autism and in particular the experience of justice sensitivity. Dr Amy is autistic herself, and works with autistic people on a regular basis, and a qualified expert, so has a lot of both lived experience and academic knowledge of autism. She shares this with us, and talks about how autistic people can be more sensitive about injusitces, big and small, and feel them more acutely, often seeing injustice and how to stop it in a binary way. I myself share my experiences of this as an autistic person too, and we explore how autistic people can navigate the challenges this bring, and how it impacts our day to day lives. Dr Amy has so much knowledge and insight on this subject, this is well worth a listen. ____ Find more of Dr Amy's work, including her many books on neurodiversity on her website here.
**Trigger warning: Spiritual abuse, toxic evangelicalism, conversion therapy stories** This week I'm joined by author and activist Lucas Wilson, to discuss stories of conversion therapy, the damage done by it, and the toxic evangelical culture which gave rise to it. We talk about some of the stories shared by people in Lucas' new book "Shame Sex Attraction", their grief, trauma and how they healed from those experiences. We also discuss toxic evangelical culture, and the harm its done to the LGBTQIA community as a whole & how we can support people who've experienced spiritual abuse, and how many of them have healed and moved into healthier lives embracing & being accepted for who they really are.
Today my beloved friend, embodiment coach, writer and podcaster Jamie Lee Finch returns to the show. We talk all sorts in this episode, from connectedness with our bodies, intuition and how this all connects to a wider spirituality, to grief and how we build healthy relationships with our bodies and build resilience. We also explore how the system we all rigged, in, is simply not built for the thriving of human bodies. We had such fun recording this, make sure you check it out.
On this episode, Grace Valentine invites Poema Clothiers, three sisters who run their styling services that has Christian roots. Grace personally loves everything they stand for and their services. I've been wanting to revisit the legacy of the great African American soprano Gloria Davy (born in Brooklyn on 29 March 1931 and died in Genève on 28 November 2012) for some time now. In the first year of the podcast, I devoted one of my very first Black History Month episodes to exploring her career, recordings, and legacy. At that time, however, I had not yet acquired a commercial recording central to her recorded output: a 1957 LP on London Records entitled, simply, Concert Recital, which featured the soprano, accompanied by Giorgio Favaretto, in a varied program of Purcell and Brahms songs, followed by two important twentieth century song cycles, Poulenc's 1939 cycle Fiançailles pour rire, set to poems by his close friend Louise de Vilmorin, and Joaquín Turina's 1918 cycle, Poema en forma de canciones. A few years after posting that episode, I finally got my hands on this ultra-rare recording, which I am thrilled to present here. Recordings of either or both of those song cycles in particular were rare at the time this recording was made, and recordings of the complete Turina cycle remain so. On this record I supplement this record with her first London/Decca release from the year 1956, entitled simply Gloria Davy Spirituals. I have already played these recordings on the podcast, but they are always worth rehearing, especially because the spirituals, many of them quite off-the-beaten-path, are arranged and conducted by African American composer Julia Perry, who has only recently, particularly in the year of her centennial, been gaining the public exposure that she so richly deserves. In between I include additional examples of Gloria Davy in song, including excerpts from an early-career performance of Poulenc's Caligrammes, his final cycle of poems by Guillaume Apollinaire, as well as an obscure but rousingly rendered song by the Italian composer, conductor, pianist, and teacher Vittorio Maria Vanzo. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly or yearly support at whatever level you can afford.

It was such a fun and interesting conversation.
