Abortion has been all over US headlines. Some have suggested that the current view of abortion in American Evangelical Christianity is merely the invention of divisive leaders, or even that true Christianity is not actually against abortion, but that it's only a politicized issue. Is this true? Have Christians only recently stood against abortion in the Evangelical movement? How should Kingdom Laborers engage this topic? Listen in to discover the truth as held in early ancient Christianity!
We all carry sexual shame. Whether we grew up in the repressive purity culture of American Evangelical Christianity or not, we've all been taught in subtle and not-so-subtle ways that sex (outside of very specific contexts) is immoral and taboo. Psychotherapist Matthias Roberts helps readers overcome their shame around sex by overcoming three unhealthy coping mechanisms we use to manage that shame. Beyond Shame: Creating a Healthy Sex Life on Your Own Terms (Fortress Press, 2020) encourages each of us to determine our own definition of healthy sex, while avoiding the ditches of boundaryless sex positivity on the one hand and strict moralistic boundaries on the other. Define your sexual values on your own terms, overcome your shame, and start having great, healthy sex. Christy continues to explore the problems within American Evangelical Christianity by discussing the Pharisees and Sadducees. If the Real Jesus was physically here on Earth today, would we miss Him? Would we be uncomfortable or irritated by Him? Maybe even furious like the religious leaders were? Or like the curious crowds would we be seeking to touch Him and experience His power? Would the truth surprise us? As we deconstruct and reconstruct our faith, Christy encourages her listeners to avoid sides, lean into their own brokenness, and find the God who spent His time with outcasts and sinners. Scripture Referenced: Luke 6
Christy continues comparing her time with Bill Gothard's Christian cult to the problems within broader American Evangelical Christianity. She looks at how people got sucked into Gothard's teachings and suggests there are three things that make us the most susceptible to false teaching: when we are afraid, when we are ignorant, and when we are isolated. Matt and Merry conclude their two part series on the role of women and men in American Evangelical Christianity. Last week, we covered the women, and this week we turn toward the men. We read Kristin Kobes Du Mez's book called Jesus and John Wayne. In it, she talks about how the secular ideas of what it means to be a man have been largely adopted by American Evangelical Christianity. What has risen is an interesting blend of Christianity/ American Nationalism defined by aggression and militancy. In a century dominated by wars and rumors of wars, we lament that for some people being a Christian man means looking for something to resist and someone to fight.
Christy continues to dive into the connections between the Christian Cult she grew up in and the mess we see in American Evangelical Christianity today. As she asks the question, "How?" Christy explores various false ideas that many of us think are Biblical. She tackles Christian Nationalism, what it means to be in the world but not of it, and the seven mountain mandate.
With a tent as large as Evangelical Christianity, it is no surprise that Christians have found themselves on opposite, even opposing, sides. With the help of those who claim the identity of “Evangelical” or those who are associated with the movement, Evangelical Christianity garnered a particular reputation during the previous presidency, exposing or causing rifts in many pockets of movement. Public theologian Dr. Russell Moore joins us on this episode to help us think through Evangelicalism in this era. What is the state of Evangelicalism and Evangelical witness in the United States? How fractured is American Evangelical Christianity along socio-political lines? On political and cultural issues, are Evangelical Christians dying on the wrong hills? Can we recover the kind of witness early evangelicals like William Wilberforce had in our own socio-political climate? How can Evangelical Christians, whichever side of the aisle they are on, move forward? In today's episode of the Black Girl Voices Podcast, We are sharing a bit of our faith deconstruction journey as we have both learned about the hypocrisy of white/American/Evangelical Christianity within the past year. This was a harder episode to record, so you may hear us fumbling our words a bit. This process is completely new for us and we are very much processing everything we are currently going through as we share it. We hope this episode is helpful to anyone else on a similar journey, and/or enlightening to those of you who don't really understand the Black perspective when it comes to Christianity and why there is such a divide in the church. Andrew Kerbs is a prominent, validating voice within the faith deconstruction community on Instagram and I'm thrilled I got to sit down and chat with him for today's episode! Andrew shares his own story of growing up in a multi-generational family of American Evangelical Christianity, thinking critically about historical & archeological evidence surrounding the Bible, and why he now classifies himself as a humanist. We discuss grief, particularly the role is plays in deconstructing a faith, and why it's such a damn hard process to transition out of a religion. We share tips on what can help the process and spoiler alert: we talk about how healing isn't linear.Listener discretion is advised due to adult language.Connect with Andrew: https://www.instagram.com/deconstruct_everything/Follow & Support the Show: https://linktr.ee/theexistentialgingerBrought to you by White Horse Media Group: https://therealwhmg.com/
This is the second part of our multi-part series on the reactionary forces of American Evangelical Christianity. I discuss how some Evangelical leaders utilized and internalized racist, sexist, homophobic, and anticommunist narratives on their path to power. I also examine how the Evangelical movement allied with American capital, and utilized capitalism to expand their influence into the realm of their adherents' material needs. Next week is the final part of this series, then it's back to some actual Marxism! CALL OUT FOR GUESTS - Contact me if you know someone or yourself want to be a guest on the Pod. We're finally back! In the first of our several part series on the reactionary force of American Evangelical Christianity, I take a look at Kristin Kobes Du Mez's book, Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation. We trace the development of Fundamentalist Protestantism into Modernist and Fundamentalist movements that evolved, coalesced, and diverged throughout WWI, WWII, and leading into the Cold War. Using Du Mez's fantastic work, I analyze how nationalism, patriarchy, capitalism, and white supremacy played important roles in this movement's early years, and how it continues to guide it into 2021. Postcards from Babylon: The Church in American Exile Brian Zahnd and David and Kathi Peters with Global Story Films The discussion of Christian Nationalism with the Church being front and center of the conversation presents an opportunity for voices on the margins of Christianity in the United States to be highlighted. U.S. of American Evangelical Christianity has a lot of influence, through its money and its loud voice. But it's arguably, on the decline. I want to highlight a Christian pastor Brian Zahnd and thought leader and two intrepid filmmakers, David and Kathi Peters who are presenting a different version of the Christian expression in the U.S. Postcards from Babylon: The Church in American Exile is a book and documentary that deconstructs Christian Nationalism and civic religion. It challenges assumptions, that many Evangelicals have taken as truth or have blatantly ignored. It offers an alternative perspective and some guidance on how to navigate a faith journey outside of the prevailing Evangelical norms. In today's show, the guys discuss the recent comments made by Evangelical pastor Louie Giglio in which he referred to the "blessing of slavery" and changing the term "White Privelege" to "White Blessing." Marc also takes the good Presbyterian, Jamie, into the strange and confusing world of American Evangelical Christianity. In the second segment, the guys talk about the recent decision by the Trump Campaign to have a rally the day after Juneteenth in a city that was the site of one of the worst episodes of racial violence in the history of the country. As always, the show wraps up with "Front Porch Musings."
Last November I was invited to animate a Round Table conversation in the Faculty of Divinity at Necmeddin Erbakan University in Konya, Turkey. Konya was the home of the great Sufi mystic Rumi and the Faculty of Divinity has a large professoriate and well over 2000 students, mostly women. In my Round Table remarks I discussed American Evangelical Christianity including its current role in America culture. Several of my remarks resonated with Tahir Uluc, Professor of Islamic Philosophy, and the author of a number of books largely on the Sufi tradition of Islam in Turkey. We met following the Round Table and discussed the gifts and challenges facing Turkey and our larger world. Professor Uluc is a keen observer of Turkey, a fine professor who has a deep interest in his students and in education in Turkey. Some context is important to understand what continues to unfold in Turkey and Professor Uluc’s concerns. When the Ottoman Empire ended following the First World War Mustafa Kemal Ataturk founded the Republic of Turkey and becoming its first President in 1923. His political party led the modernization of Turkey and ushered in a secular state that modeled itself after elements in France following its Revolution in 1789. Religion was removed from its central place in Turkish culture, many religious leaders were executed, some banished, and others went underground. Fine contributions were mixed with virulent ones, as is so often the case with sweeping social change. With the election of Recep Tayyip Erdogan as Prime Minister along with his Justice and Development Party in 2003 another set of remarkable changes were ushered in. I have visited Turkey a number of times in the last decade and appreciated many of these changes. I have also been a critic of how the Western press characterizes the changes coming about in Turkey. The fears expressed show little appreciation for this remarkable country and no understanding for its distinct form of Islam and its potential role in the modern world. I welcome your thoughts on our conversation and may be reached at www.davidgoa.ca/contact.

I was hoping you could spend a few minutes speculating on the future of American Evangelical Christianity following President Trump. Also, would you mind informing us about the differences between American Christianity and Christianity from other countries. In your translation of Mark you refer to Gethsemane as a "plot of ground" instead of a garden. Any particular reason you didn't call Gethsemane a "garden?" Granting that Matthew 24:29 is prophecy after the fact, why would the author write something he knew had not happened?  Might â??the knowledge of good and evilâ?? in Eden refer to learning what food is healthful or deadly? I've observed that Jesus Myth debates and lectures are almost always hosted by a small group of atheists. Why do they feel the need to constantly be retold things they already know about an issue that may not really be a scholarly issue? And do you feel this is really an important debate? I thought it might be a good idea to read through the New Testament in the order in which the books were written. What do you think of this approach? How well do you think a courtroom analogy of Christianity holds up? How do we know that God makes â??severalâ?? humans at once in Genesis chapter 1? Is that somehow hidden in the original Hebrew? Would citing the Infancy Gospel of Thomas as a source for an essay be as valid as say the Gospels of Mark or John? What is the best history of the King James Version of the Bible? Do you know how pages of Codex Sinaiticus came to be waste paper bin liners at the monastery at which they were discovered? Welcome to the first episode in the RELIGION series of Smartest Person in the Room. For the next few weeks we’ll be hearing stories about people living within their religion, defined here as a “cultural system of behaviors and practices, often (but not always) in relation to something deemed sacred." This episode is about the divide between modern day American Evangelical Christianity and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, otherwise known as LDS or Mormons. For purposes of clarity, in this conversation I refer to my guest Nish Weiseth as a “mainstream” Christian and to guest Emily Belle Freeman as a Mormon. Both living in Utah, Nish and Emily have partnered together to bridge the gaping divide between these two faiths that both follow Jesus. With their combined influence in both the Evangelical and Latter-day Saint traditions, Emily & Nish have decided to take on the difficult task of getting Mormons and Christians to listen to one another and learn from each other. They work as a pair, speaking to both Mormon and Christian congregations, but they also spend a lot of time in their own camps, trying to dismantle some of the misinformation and stereotypes that each side has of the other. Their hope is that Mormons and Christians will eventually be able to put aside their differences in order to impact the world for good, together. Their online hub is called Multiply Goodness, which includes a blog, resources and more, on how people can start doing this inter-faith work in their own communities. In this episode we talk about: The main theological differences between the Mormon faith and modern American evangelical Christianity. If each faith tradition believes the other one is going to hell. How Nish & Emily met and formed an unlikely partnership. Why it's WOMEN who are leading this charge. You can follow SPITR on Facebook or sign up for our episode emails.
