Resilience and tenacity are my two favorite words in the English language. I cheer for the underdog and love stories of triumph over trauma. It is even better when that story of triumph becomes a catalyst for empowering others. Sofie Lindberg has done just that.  As an American-Swedish catalyst for change, Sofie brings a unique perspective to the table, drawing from her background in human services and organizational sciences, in addition to personally overcoming abusive and toxic relationships. Sofie's journey from founding Claim Your Potential, a women's empowerment organization, to her current role as the CEO of Sofie Lindberg International, showcases her passion for empowering individuals to transform setbacks into opportunities for growth and positive change. Whether it's building organizational culture, setting boundaries, recovering from burnout, or eliminating toxicity, Sofie's expertise shines through as she provides actionable insights and strategies for personal and professional development.

The horror genre gets turned on its head in this 2019 American-Swedish film directed by Ari Aster. This was an unexpected surprise that provided a powerful emotional experience. Florence Pugh gives a dynamic performance amongst a strong ensemble cast that transports our American sensibilities into a nightmare of cultural underpinnings of relationships, family and life. I can never look at a bear the same way again.

This week we note that at the time of recording, American-Swedish astronaut Jessica Meir is busy preparing and conducting the second ever all-female spacewalk. In history this week in 1964, Italian philosopher, author and skeptic Massimo Pigliucci was born, and we discuss some of his contributions and influences. Pontus Pokes the Pontus to note that old Benedict comes out of retirement to fight for celibacy, potentially creating a headache for poor Francis, who is supposed to say the final word on the matter shortly. In other papal news, disgraced former Archbishop Theodore McCarrick goes missing to avoid the wrath of the Holy See. In the news, the Spanish Catholic Church inexplicably thinks that celibate priests constitute the best expertise in preparing young couples for marriage while Uri Geller reminds us that he's no more crazy than the UK Government and so, applies for a job there. Gwyneth Paltrow's The Goop Lab is soon coming to a Netflix near you, trying to convince us that spending a fortune on utter bullshit is the way to female empowerment. Luckily the Guerrilla Skepticism on Wikipedia project (GSOW) with Susan Gerbic has already launched an excellent Wikipedia page pointing out the stupidity of that. A Swedish MP spreads conspiracy theories on the Australian wildfires and we try to set the record straight. A Danish study shows what the harm really is with HPV anti-vaccination propaganda and the Swedish Skeptics (VoF) wants to alert the world about bogus personality tests that's makes the rounds internationally. Beware of the book ‘Surrounded by Idiots'! We end by handing a Really Wrong award to the College of Medicine that, backed by Prince Charles, wants to teach GPs and alt med quacks Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP), despite that it clearly is pseudoscientific nonsense. Enjoy! Segments: Intro; Greetings; This Week; Pontus Pokes the Pope; News; Really Wrong; Quote and Farewell; Outro; Out-takes Events Calendar: http://theesp.eu/events_in_europe

(PART 2) In this weeks episode me and my fellow American-Swedish friend Ellen Griffith continue our conversation on our countries differences, this time withe the focus on: politics and systematic issues. We start off by talking about how it feels to get others opinions on American politics dumped on you solely because you are the "token" and how we deal with family members having different political affiliations than us. Then we discuss the stereotypes of being American as well as the US classic "go-go-go" mentality. We round it off by advocating self care and how we cope with built in cultural pressure. The year is 2015. Jonas might be an excellent teacher if he weren’t addicted to drugs. Instead, at age twenty-eight, he’s been fired from yet another creative writing position after assigning homework like, visit a stranger’s funeral and write about it. Jonas needs to do something drastic and, as a dual American-Swedish citizen, he knows Sweden is an easy place to be a graduate student—and a difficult place to be a drug addict. He goes to Malmö, a city trying to cope with the arrival of tens of thousands of Middle Eastern refugees. Driven by an existential need to “do good,” Jonas volunteers with an organization that teaches Swedish to the desperate and idling young refugees. But a friendship with one young refugee, Aziz, will force Jonas to question whether “doing good” can actually help another person. A resplendent work of autofiction, Johannes Lichtman's Such Good Work uses dark humor and pathos to consider the complexity of being a good person in our modern world, as well as the effects of nationalism and identity politics in a time when conversations around migrant policies are vital and omnipresent.

Today on The Neil Haley Show, The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview New York Times Best Selling Author Celebrity Traci Lords.   Ever since TRACI LORDS appeared in John Waters' teen comedy, Cry Baby opposite an also-then 19 year old newcomer, Johnny Depp, Traci has delivered role after memorable role right through to her being cast in the original American-Swedish comedy series, Swedish Dicks, opposite European superstar Peter Stormare and created by Stormare, Glenn Lund, Peter Settman, and Andrew Lowery.  After a super successful debut season which launched last summer to unanimous critical lauds, the outrageous Swedish Dicks is back with season 2 premiering on PopTV beginning Saturday, July 28th with their signature twist -- indelible guest stars in each and every episode with Keanu Reeves returning this cycle. We'd love to arrange for series star, TRACI LORDS, to come in studio with your show the week of July 23rd. Traci's brilliant turn as 'Jane McKinney,' a private investigator and competitor of the show's protagonist (Stormare) in the Lionsgate TV series, is her best work yet. The plot which follows two unlicensed Swedish private investigators -- an aging ex-stuntman (Peter Stormare) stuck in the past and an overly optimistic Swedish DJ (Johan Glans) stuck in the digital world-- who are trying to make a living in Los Angeles (Stormare is best known as the sociopathic killer from Fargo) broaches a whole new season of the stars trying to solve some of the strangest and wildest cases L.A. has ever seen.
