This week, we're shedding one single, sexy tear for Cry-Baby (1990), John Waters' delightfully deranged teen musical where bad boys ride motorcycles, good girls lose their minds, and everyone's got more hair grease than sense. We're talking prison chic, awkward tongue kisses, and a world where courtroom scenes turn into doo-wop numbers. Johnny Depp smolders, Ricki Lake twirls, and Traci Lords steals every scene she struts through. So grab your leather jacket, pout like your life depends on it, and join us for a wild ride into Waters' world of love, lust, and one seriously committed tear duct.----Intro/Outro Music: "Phantom Fun" by Jonathan Boyle----Show E-Mail: cultcinemacircle@gmail.com----Follow Cult Cinema Circle on Instagram, Bluesky, and Letterboxd Hosted on Acast. Cry-Baby is the pick of this week's supporter, Lucky LouLouGreen! Cry-Baby (1990), directed by John Waters, was a deliberate foray into mainstream filmmaking while retaining Waters' signature offbeat style. Set in 1950s Baltimore, the movie serves as a satirical homage to teen musicals like Grease and rebellious youth culture. Waters assembled a unique cast, headlined by Johnny Depp in his first major film role post-21 Jump Street, as he sought to break free from his teen heartthrob image. Alongside Depp, the ensemble included Ricki Lake, Traci Lords, and Patricia Hearst, with Waters blending Hollywood newcomers with eccentric cult personalities. Filmed on location in Maryland, the production leaned heavily on a retro aesthetic, featuring vibrant costumes, classic cars, and rockabilly-inspired musical numbers. Waters worked closely with choreographers and musicians to infuse the film with both authenticity and absurdity, creating a stylized yet tongue-in-cheek tribute to 1950s pop culture. Despite Waters' reputation as a cult filmmaker, Cry-Baby was produced with significant studio backing from Universal Pictures, granting it a larger budget than his previous works. This collaboration with a major studio presented challenges, as Waters had to balance his trademark subversive humor with the commercial expectations of a broader audience. The film's over-the-top humor and campy sensibilities divided critics upon release, but it gained a devoted following over time, particularly among fans of musical comedies and Waters' unconventional storytelling. While Cry-Baby didn't achieve box office success, it cemented Waters' ability to inject mainstream cinema with his rebellious flair and ultimately inspired a Tony-nominated Broadway adaptation in 2007, solidifying its status as a cult classic. Their romance sets off a rivalry between the rowdy, leather-clad "drapes" and the prim, uptight "squares", leading to a series of musical showdowns, quirky antics, and over-the-top drama. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support
Acomi and Turk182 hop into the Funback machine and take a trip to the glorious 1980s, specifically the golden age of adult films. Or, was it, though? Video was replacing film and threatening to saturate the market with low quality and low production products. AIDS was a growing issue that the government wasn't acknowledging. And, the industry was nearly brought to it's knees (pun intended) by a "not ready for prime-time player" scandal. Turk, relates the story of actress and one-time adult film performer Traci Lords, and how she, with or without help, almost destroyed the adult entertainment industry. And, much to his displeasure, acceptance of another perspective. #OMTWF #Acomi #Turk182 #KorovaEntertainment #1980s #80s #adultfilms #adultfilmindustry #adultentertainment #TraciLords #FBI Follow Acomi on Twitter at @AcomiDraws and on Instagram at AcomiDraws. “Can you contract an STD by having sex with a dead person?” The Blind Rage Podcast kicks off this month with Richard Bates, Jr.'s EXCISION, a film destined to be a cult classic. Meet Pauline (AnnaLynne McCord), a high school outcast who aspires to one day become a surgeon. While most who plan for a career in medicine spend their days studying the human body, Pauline believes her understanding of the subject is far superior than anything found in necessary textbooks. She instead fills her days engaged in pseudo psychological counseling with a local priest (John Waters), isolating herself from her classmates by acting out in a plethora of reprehensible antics, and praying to a God she isn't sure exists. With strong performances by McCord, as well as Traci Lords, who plays Pauline's overbearing mother, EXCISION is a breath of fresh air, especially in times like these, when most filmmaking is more copy and paste than innovation or originality. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/blindragepod/message

Warm up the water in your tiny tin bathtub and pull out your pastel pedal pushers hat as we bebop into John Waters's Cry-Baby. Did Waters achieve the ultimate level of Postmodern metatextual campiness by creating a pastiche of his own film style here? Can the power of a quality goth accessory really change hearts and minds? Is this perhaps the best Willem Dafoe cameo ever? And is Kim McGuire, aka "Hatchet-Face", basically the biggest badass who ever lived? We'll let you know after this sloppy, sloppy make-out session.

Dave shows Guy SKINNER, a film that at first appears to be a typical 90s slasher but soon becomes something much more grim and disgusting. Not only does it feature the brain-melting cast of Ted Raimi, Traci Lords and Ricki Lake, it also contains a scene that is one of the most fucked things we've covered on this podcast. Dave digs deep into the disturbing background of the film's director, Ivan Nagy, which makes SKINNER all the more skin-crawling! Follow Show Me Something Wrong on Twitter. This is movie is stupid underrated. Johnny Depp plays Cry-Baby, a teen heartthrob on the wrong side of the tracks who falls for a Square named Allison. Director/Writer John Waters really nails the "James Dean" aesthetic in this movie with a hilarious and campy good time. The songs are memorable and all the supporting cast does a great job. Traci Lords was a porn star, then actress in John Waters' Cry Baby and on Roseanne and somewhere in between she had an album. The first song in this dismal set is her song called Father's Field. It's very curious and I've heard it interpreted as two possible scenarios. One is the description of an alien abduction, the other is a sort of violent attack. I believe the ladder is correct and if you listen closely to the words, it is very disturbing in its description. Sometimes people express a lot through music and I can only guess she wrote and recorded this as a cathartic release from a painful childhood memory. Warning: this track may bring up emotions and painful memories for some. If you have a reaction to violence or would not want to hear this story, please skip to the 9 minute mark. The motivation for this mix was a direct response to a scene in a movie where a young Marine is essentially drown by his commanding officer during boot camp. The movie is called The Inspection (2022). "In Elegance Bratton's deeply moving film inspired by his own story, a young, gay Black man, rejected by his mother and with few options for his future, decides to join the Marines, doing whatever it takes to succeed in a system that would cast him aside." I actually paused the movie at this scene, went to my desk and spent the next 2 hours making this mix, then continued the movie. It has a happy ending. Ambient music & sound is something I enjoy and in creating mixes often find hidden emotions, thoughts and feelings within myself. Perhaps this is my own cathartic release in a way, or just some grounding of my mind in an otherwise hectic space. Headphones are the best way to listen.

This guy personifies Cliff Booth. He had the look, the stunt street cred, and a famous buddy, Burt Reynolds. He's Hal Needham and boy did he like Smokey and the Bandit. We dive into his career and along the way we explore my life as a video store clerk, Traci Lords, Tugboat Thomas, Singin' in the Rain, the forgotten sequels to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and the 80's classic "Rad". We also ponder the legitimacy of Talia Shire's career and why she tried to get Blossom to strip down. And for your weirdos, I also do a deep dive on the I Spit On Your Grave franchise. All that and more on...Fanacek!

Zack and Miri Make A Porno movie review from the Salty Nerds has them loving writer/director Kevin Smith's take on two childhood friends making a porn film to capitalize on their viral internet fame in order to make enough money to pay off their electric bill.Starring Seth Rogan and Elizabeth Banks, this film sees a lot of Kevin Smith regulars return, including Jeff Anderson, Justin Long, Brandon Routh, Craig Robinson, Tom Savini, and Jason Mewes. We even get appearances from cross-over adult actresses Katie Morgan and Traci Lords! This is a film about love and how sex can destroy a friendship when things get complicated. In the Nerds' opinion, it's one of Kevin Smith's best films, even if it was a disappointment at the box office. Check out our movie review and let us know what you think! On this edition of Parallax Views, the independent genre film factory that is Charles Band's long running Full Moon Features has a quirky new sci-fi/fantasy adventure on the horizon that's of, shall we say, epic proportions. Although Full Moon's known for serving up pint-sized mayhem with such franchises as Puppet Master and Demonic Toys, they're going BIG this time around with Attack of the 50 Ft. Camgirl! A riff on the immortal 1958 B-movie classic Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman, the film that may have created a million giantess fetishists w/ it's buxom star Allison Hayes, puts an Instagram influencer twist on the often-told science fiction tale of the gargantuan beauty run amuck and even features a showdown between not one but two glamorous Godzilla-sized gals. Joining me to discuss Full Moon's latest sci-fi/fantasy romp, are director Jim Wynorski and star Ivy Smith, making her acting debut as the titular 50 ft camgirl! First up is Ivy Smith, who talks a little bit about the film, the story of it, how she got into modeling, how she ended up as the 50 ft camgirl, the anxiety that comes with doing a nude scene, destroying miniatures in the climatic showdown of the giantesses, getting rude messages from men asking her to step on them (if you want to do that send money!) and working with director Jim Wynorski, producer Charles Band, and actresses Christine Nyugen and Lisa London among other things! Then, Jim Wynorksi comes on the program and chastisize me a bit for asking questions that aren't stupid enough. We talk about how Attack of the 50 ft Camgirl came to be, what he learned from maverick exploitation producer Roger Corman, why men are into the giantess fetish, his friendship with Traci Lords (who made her non-adult debut in Jim's 1988 remake of Not of This Earth), the legendary character of Orville Ketchum in Jim's cult classics Sorority House Massacre II and its sequel Hard to Die (as well as the interesting details on how those films got made!), Jim's sense of humor, how my original questions bored him to tears, his upcoming feature Bigfoot or Bust, working with Stormy Daniels and why he didn't like that experience, and more! All in all this is one of the sillier and weirder episodes of Parallax Views I've done to date! Many thanks to Chris Alexander and Full Moon Features for making it happen! And if any of my listeners are in Dallas, be sure to stop by Texas Frightmare Weekend where you can see the premiere of Attack of the 50ft Camgirl and meet both Full Moon head honcho Charles Bad and the beautiful, talented Ivy Smith (Friday only for Ivy!)! And be sure to check out Ivy Smith's Facebook page

We conclude our look at adult films with the raunchiest we've covered so far, New Wave Hookers (1985), a film from the Dark Brothers mired in controversy. Starring Jack Baker and Jamie Gillis, it's the story of two men who share a dream of becoming pimps and hypnotizing women into doing their bidding via the power of new wave music. The film also features Ginger Lynn and originally featured Traci Lords before it broke that she was underage at the time of making it. Robin Bougie (Cinema Sewer) and Ashley West (The Rialto Report) join Mike to discuss the film and its backstory.

Boring, BISH! That's right, we're adding two B's to the squares mantra. This week we jump into another John Waters classic, Cry-Baby! A juvenile delinquent (Johnny Depp), dodges the biggest panties in existence while Allison (Amy Locane) tries to dodge those charges. We join the Cry-Baby girls (Ricki Lake, Traci Lords, and Kim "Hatchetface" McGuire) to shed a lonely teardrop and mack down at the Redneck Riviera. Come to Turkey Point man, if you dare! Django Nudo and the Smut Peddler indulge in Cava and some gratuitous back slapping iun Barcelona on the occasion of Cultpix having operated for six months without any major screw-ups and quite a few achievements. We cover being global, 20+ distributor partners, newsletters, podcast, social media and the cinema bit. We are not just streaming our films, but we are doing five double-bill screenings in Stockholm and four films with Everyman, with "She Freak" (1967) that is showing on 19 October in London, Bristol, Glasgow and York. Next week are off to a conference in Lyon where we hope to sign more deals. This week's theme is very special. Just remember to consult your doctor before undertaking any of the exercises featured in this podcast and please put on your headband and leg warmers. We go way back into the video vault of early VHS. Back in the early 1980s couldn't get the Hollywood blockbusters on VHS, so it was porn or Jane Fonda. Often watched for not dissimilar reasons. Ron Harris, erotic photographer helped launch the craze with "Aerobicise" (1981). You had to be an aerobics instructor to keep up judging by the pace. We then have two videos from bad girl porn star Traci Lords, "Jazz Warm Up With Traci Lords" (1990) and "Advanced Jazzthetics" (1993). The second is a re-edit with improved music and less naff rhyming voiceover. In fact, it has weird echoes of Art of Noise. The highlight is "Do It With Debbie" (1993) when America's Sweetheart rounded up her female Hollywood star friends and hit the mat. The highlight is Shelley Winters who is 'only doing this for Debbie' and few up with the leg lifts shouts out "Who here has slept with Howard Hughes?" to which Debbie raises her hand. Very different from Jane Fonda."Jane Powell's Fight Back With Fitness" (1986) is not for getting ripped but helps people with arthritis with a singing and moving that harks back to her 1950s MGM musical days. She passed away just a month ago. R.I.P. Good Time's "29 Minutes Workout" manages to assemble all the 1980s workout cliches in one place: cheap synths, leg warmers and sweat bands and bright lycra outfits paired with American tan pantyhose. Finally there is "Dancin' Grannies" (1989) that is like an extended episode of Golden Girls go to the gym. [Not mentioned in the podcast, but we threw in a bonus with Kitten Natividad's "Eroticise".]In case you are not a retro fitness freak, fear not, Something Weird this way comes for next week's films.
Part 2 is where we actually get into the meat of it all. And let me tell you, it's a flawless victory of a fatality of a killer soundtrack. Follow us as we continue to revel in the greatness that is 1995's cinematic masterpiece, Mortal Kombat, and its perfectly accompanying soundtrack!
This week, The Cultists Present, John Waters' Cry-Baby (1990). Inarguably the most mainstream and accessible of Waters' oeuvre, Cry-Baby's technicolor array of costumes, camp performances, and impeccably mixed sound still bears all the markings of John Waters' loveably perverse and whacky soul. In a charming parody tale of 1950s cinema nostalgia, Cry Baby Walker—the matchstick chewing, leather clad “Drape” who can only ever cry that one lonely tear drop—has met a girl. The only hurdle between their atomic-defying love? Dead, homicidal parents; jealous, sociopathic and marriage obsessed boyfriends; and a long stint in Juvie. Oh, and she's also a square. Deep Dives Include: Waters' personal childhood influences on the film; the immeasurable importance of Bob Mizer's photography; that jaw-dropping eclectic cast (from Traci Lords to Joe Dallesandro, to Iggy Pop to Patty Hearst); and the 1950s film homages that pop up throughout.) Episode Safeword: “mass-appeal”
Introducing Once Upon A Time In...the ValleyIn the roaring 1980s X world, Traci Lords reigned supreme. No one questioned her right to sovereignty. Only, it turned out, the biggest star in Adult, wasn't one. As America would discover in July 1986, when the FBI busted down her door. Traci Lords was really Nora Kuzma, who entered the industry as a 15-year-old high school sophomore. Traci, the victim, was saved. And the industry, the villain, was very nearly destroyed. But what if the victim here was also the villain; the villain, also the victim? Welcome to Once Upon a Time… in the Valley is the world's first real-life psychological thriller and porno-noir mystery.
