What's your most loved and least favorite song on Jellyfish's Spilt Milk?!  Jim picked the 1993 favorite by the band that Dan says unites us the most. Between the four of us, we saw the band close to 30 times in just three years but it was Adam that started a website about the band, helped write their boxed set liner notes and....it's complicated. As a result of a whole lotta fun stories, the ranking doesn't start until the 32 minute mark. So close your eyes and get comfortable because we got Roger Joseph Manning Jr, Tim Smith, Eric Dover, Jason Falkner and superfan Pablo Melons to chime in with their most and least loved songs on the album. Okay. This one is a real treat! In the 1990’s Roger Joseph Manning Jr. and his partner Andy Sturmer formed the band, Jellyfish. And even though the released on two albums (including the first album with Jason Falkner--who I talked to on the podcast several months ago), they never managed to meet their commercial expectations. Which is insane, because their second album, 1993’s Spilt Milk is, in my opinion, one of the greatest power pop albums released over the last 50 years. Seriously. Since then Roger has played with Beck, Roger Waters, Jay-Z, Johnny Cash and more. He also wrote music with Brian Wilson. We’ll talk about that, Jellyfish, and about his new band, the Lickerish Quartet. They’re about to release their first Ep this week entitled “Threesome Vol 1”. Super jacked up about this one. Enjoy!

Bill and Brian go sans guest (not by choice) to talk about Jellyfish's unique blend of Baroque arrangements and power pop hooks on the band's sophomore and final album Spilt Milk (1993, Charisma). Bill and Brian discuss the band's place amongst other 90s rock bands, how the band has started to carve out its own niche in the canon of great bands, the influence of classic Disney films, where fan clubs fit in with the modern music industry, the confluence of harmony styles from both the Beach Boys and Queen, Roger Joseph Manning Jr. and Andy Sturmer's vocal styles, playing drums while standing, and much more as we make our way through the album track by track!

Love That Album episode 68 is here. Any of you who know me know of my love for power pop…and in that regard, we have a gem of an album to discuss. I’m joined by Melbourne musician, teacher, and fellow power pop nut Rhys Lett to discuss the 1993 album “Spilt Milk” from San Francisco band, Jellyfish. This was a huge step forward from their brilliant debut, “Bellybutton”, but was also unfortunately their final album. Was it due to public or record company apathy, or band friction? In this regard, they share the fate of their stylistic cousins, The Zombies and Big Star (both covered previously on the podcast) who ceased active recording way too early. They’ve had a lot of comparisons with Queen (for the rawwwwk and drummer Andy Sturmer’s singing) and the Beach Boys’ harmonies. As valid as these comparisons are, there is a lot more going on here. This could be described as a concept album with the songs being parts of a nightmare – not the bogeyman type, but more a domestic nightmare of infidelity, unrequited crushes, depression, death, and evangelism. There’s also a song on Spilt Milk that led Rhys to suggest Ben Eisen needs to pursue its subject matter in an All Time Top Ten podcast. Tune in and find out what it was…. This time around, Eric Reanimator also discusses the Psyclone Ranger’s album from 1993 “Feel Nice”. He describes this as power pop bordering on punk. See what you think.
