What's your most loved and least favorite song on Jellyfish's Spilt Milk?!  Jim picked the 1993 favorite by the band that Dan says unites us the most. Between the four of us, we saw the band close to 30 times in just three years but it was Adam that started a website about the band, helped write their boxed set liner notes and....it's complicated. As a result of a whole lotta fun stories, the ranking doesn't start until the 32 minute mark. So close your eyes and get comfortable because we got Roger Joseph Manning Jr, Tim Smith, Eric Dover, Jason Falkner and superfan Pablo Melons to chime in with their most and least loved songs on the album. It goes without saying that I am a big Jellyfish fan, I talk about em on the show all the time. That being said, it is a gigantic honor to have Roger on the show! He is a musical genius, in my opinion, and we're going to chat about his new album "Radio Daze" to learn more about what makes his brain tick when it comes to songwriting, arranging, producing and engineering! Among many other projects, he's also been a long time touring member of Beck's band and I can't wait to learn more about his experience working with that musical juggernaut. This week Baxie welcomes Roger Joseph Manning Jr. back to the podcast. Roger has not only written, toured, and/or recorded with the likes of Roger Waters, Beck, Adele, JayZ, Johnny Cash, Brian Wilson and many others--he was also one of the co-founders of the band Jellyfish. In the early 1990's Jellyfish released two albums that, while overlooked at the time, have become essential cult classics. This includes their sadly overlooked 1993 masterpiece "Spilt Milk". An album, which is not one my favorite albums of all time--I'll even go so far as to say it is one of the most astonishing power-pop albums ever recorded! (I'm dead serious). Over the last three years Roger has released 3 EP's with the band The Lickerish Quartet (with former Jellyfish touring members Eric Dover and Tim Smith), he reissued both of his previous solo albums ("Land of Pure Imagination" and "Catnip Dynamite"), he's also just released his latest EP "Radio Daze" on Omnivore Recordings. On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Tim Smith (The Lickerish Quartet, Sheryl Crow, Umajets, Jellyfish, etc.). Ex-Jellyfish members Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (Beck, Air, Cheap Trick, Imperial Drag), Tim Smith (Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, The Finn Brothers, Sheryl Crow, Umajets) and Eric Dover (Imperial Drag, Slash's Snakepit, Alice Cooper, Sextus)—released their third and final child, Threesome Volume 3, May 20, 2022 on Stranger Danger Records and Tapes, distributed by Burnside and the Orchard in the U.S. and by Lojinx in the U.K. and Europe. It's available now on digital outlets and on the band's official website. Threesome Volume 3 makes its way into the world via remote writing, recording, and mixing. The challenges we've all faced these last years forced Roger, Eric and Tim to finalize this EP through a series of emails, and phone calls. Home recording studios were redesigned and outfitted to complete the final four songs that were originally written together in 2017. Threesome Volume 3 completes the trilogy started with the release of Threesome Volume 1 in 2020, which was called a “masterpiece” by many critics and fans alike. Threesome Volume 2 was released in early 2021, and its first single, “Snollygoster Goon,” showed another side of the band and its versatility as writers, singers and musicians. “Fortunately,” the EP's first single and video, is a bouncy tune sung by Tim Smith that drips with the signature harmonies and melodic structures The Lickerish Quartet have been known for, alongside a deeper, darker lyric that speaks to the universal ideas of heaven, hell, dogma and belief. As a co-write with their executive producer, Adam W. James, Eric's slide guitar soloing, Roger's keyboards and string arrangement, and Tim's melodic bass lines combine for the listener to perhaps harken back to early FM radio hits of the ‘70s. “New Days” was released as the second single and video on April 22. As sung by Roger, it's a tale of remembering the past with the longing psychedelic hope of the future. Eric's lyric touches pastoral images of optimistic youth and shaping moments with the desire to keep moving forward, onward, and probably westward. Lush reverb guitars, grooving bass and drums with evolving vocal harmonies celebrate the hope we all share for new beginnings. “You All Alone” starts with a jarring string ensemble as Eric's lead vocal then weaves a story of obsession and pursuit. Jagged drums and bass, razor wire guitars and another excellent string arrangement by Roger leads our hero towards satisfaction, but at what cost? Who is the hunter, and who is the hunted? “In The Meantime” rounds out the EP. Sung by Tim, the song ponders where do YOU go when you are feeling the crush of a world you no longer recognize? Topical, but also timeless, “In The Meantime” proffers to float rather than sink or swim. The theme of burying down deep is married to a pulsing, shouting wall of guitar sound and fury, but with a non-violent narrative. Those most precious things that bring us happiness--to love someone, do something, or have something to hope for--are sung about with fearlessness. They continue to engage with their fans via their website and “Experiences”--a series of collaborative connections of writing together with folks, performing on songs submitted to the band, personalized songs and messages, lessons in songwriting and production, as well as numerous Zoom-hosted breakdowns of their songs in-studio followed by a Q&A with the fans about the process, choices made, and equipment used to create their music. Meanwhile, Sony Japan recently partnered with them to release all three EPs on June 29, as a collection entitled Fables From Fearless Heights, which will include two previously unheard cover songs, as well as a special “best of” vinyl LP in that region. Sherry and Tim chat about The Lickerish Quartet's new EP and much more! Please visit thelickerishquartet.com for more information.

We're hanging out with Roger Joseph Manning Jr. today at WASTOIDS. Maybe you know him from Jellyfish, Imperial Drag or the Lickerish Quartet, or from his long string of solo albums. Or maybe you've spotted his name in the credits of albums by Beck, Blink 182, HAIM, Jimmy Eat World, Lana Del Rey, Nate Ruess, The Format, and many, many more. 25 years ago, he and his musical partner Brian Kehew embarked on a truly strange journey into the musical technology of the past, which helped to kick off a synthesizer renaissance. We're talking about The Moog Cookbook, the duo he and Brian started, adopting the pseudonyms Meco Eno and Uli Nomi. They donned sci-fi-inspired cheeky astronaut gear—even before the French duo of Daft Punk got their own retro futuristic headgear and played cover versions of alternative rock standards that were dominating the radio airwaves at the time—bands like Green Day, Soundgarden, and Weezer, as well as classic rock songs by Van Halen, David Bowie, and Led Zeppelin, the Cookbook released two albums in 1996 and 1997, which caught the attention of Air, who invited the duo to collaborate, and Dave Grohl, who commissioned Cookbook-ified synth versions of Foo Fighters songs. Along with the  b-sides collection Bartell, these albums still resonate with warm, analog synth sounds. Part pastiche, part ironic send up, and part genuine, cross-genre/generation musical conversation, the Cookbook epitomized a certain strain of ‘90s pop culture that raided the past for inspiration and generated something that continues to buzz with a nostalgic glow. We caught up with Manning in his studio to learn more…

On this episode of the Banned Biographies podcast I sat down over Zoom to interview punk and indie inspired solo artist Louise Aubrie. Louise is from London, where she began writing and recording music, playing in venues like the 100 Club and the O2 Centre. Since then she has lived in New York City where she continued to hone her craft becoming a regular in venues like The Bitter End and The Bowery Electric.  During her career, Louise has recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios and has worked with Boz Boorer (musical director and co-writer for Morrissey), Andy Woodard (drummer for Adam Ant, New Model Army), Tom Edwards (guitarist for Adam Ant, Edwyn Collins), Roger Joseph Manning Jr (keyboards for The Killers, Beck, Morrissey), David Ruffy (drummer for The Ruts, The Waterboys), James Knight (producer for The Kooks, Kirsty MacColl), Ken Sluiter (mixer/engineer for Morrissey, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sum 41, Marc Almond), Cam Blackwood (producer/engineer for George Ezra, Jack Savoretti) and Dave Collins (mastering for Jane's Addiction, No Doubt, Weezer). Louise's fifth album, ‘Antonio', will be released later in 2021. But, it's first single, 'Last', is out today, so make sure you go and buy it from wherever you get your music from. Louise Aubrie is an incredible songwriter and, more than that, a warm and funny person and I think that's captured in this chat which I hope you enjoy listening to as much as I did having it. People are stranger than strange today.  Walking up the parking lot at Wally World and this guy, who was eyeing me the entire time, chooses to shoulder bump me.  It was purposeful as I did try to take a step back as he quickly spun my way.  Weird how he stumbled and was muttering at me after we collided and I didn't move after, he collided with me...after asking what that was about, I just walked away.  He did not do a bump and lift as I have nothing I carry on me worth stealing.  He didn't fall, he just stumbled back as if he just came to realizing he ran into me.  On the way out, I walk with the cart as close to the inside parked lane as I can… I quickly notice a van on my ass less than a cart length behind me.  If I had stopped quickly, I wouldn't be writing this. Has my vibration gotten so strong, high and so fast that I am not being seen?  The Music Authority LIVE STREAM Show & Podcast...listen, like, comment, download, share, repeat daily on Listen Notes, Google Podcast Manager, Mixcloud, Player FM, Stitcher, Tune In, Podcast Addict, Cast Box, Radio Public, and Pocket Cast, and APPLE iTunes! From his early beginnings in the band Beatnik Beatch, followed by the success and cult following with his power-pop band Jellyfish in the early 90’s, Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. continues to explore and create music that contains musical excellence and well-crafted lyrics. The past three decades have been filled with a variety of projects for Roger, from Imperial Drag, to TV Eyes, to several solo and collaborative album projects - not to mention lending his talents to artists like Beck, Jay-Z, Blink 182, and the legendary Johnny Cash. Manning’s latest project reunites two of his past Jellyfish bandmates to form The Lickerish Quartet. The power-pop trio has just released their first, four song EP titled “Threesome Vol. 1”, which was released on May 15 and carries on the incredible musicianship and songwriting vibe that Jellyfish fans have grown accustomed to. Inside MusiCast is pleased to welcome Roger Joseph Manning, Jr.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A FEW DAYS MAKES! Pain is a 2 on the ever-present pain scale. It seems the shot just needed some time to take hold. Will be doing some more resting and not straining the back for another day or two to see if it the facet block really working...then some light to moderate effort to see where this thing might be going. There is talk of another facet block if the pain comes back soon. I'm over the moon with the way I feel today! I did notice though, my left leg is now doing the pain to the knee and the Physicians Assistant tells me, that now the pain is reduced on the right side, I'm starting to notice the left more...spinal arthritis they tell me on both sides… The Music Authority LIVE STREAM Show & Podcast...recorded and on Mixcloud, Player FM, Stitcher, Tune In, Podcast Addict, Cast Box, Radio Public, and Pocket Cast, APPLE iTunes, AND Google Play Music! Okay. This one is a real treat! In the 1990’s Roger Joseph Manning Jr. and his partner Andy Sturmer formed the band, Jellyfish. And even though the released on two albums (including the first album with Jason Falkner--who I talked to on the podcast several months ago), they never managed to meet their commercial expectations. Which is insane, because their second album, 1993’s Spilt Milk is, in my opinion, one of the greatest power pop albums released over the last 50 years. Seriously. Since then Roger has played with Beck, Roger Waters, Jay-Z, Johnny Cash and more. He also wrote music with Brian Wilson. We’ll talk about that, Jellyfish, and about his new band, the Lickerish Quartet. They’re about to release their first Ep this week entitled “Threesome Vol 1”. Super jacked up about this one. Enjoy!

Unconventional Genius
Roger Joseph Manning, JR. Songwriter and Musician on The Creative Process Behind Timeless Music

Unconventional Genius

It is quite common these days to hear people talking about the creative process. Anyone from graphic designers to app designers legitimately use the phrase to describe what it takes to be successful at what they do. But a long-time area of fascination for me has been the creative process that goes into making timeless music. And when that process is done in the context of a group of people - a band - it’s nothing short of amazing. I’m immensely honored to be able to present you with this conversation I recorded with Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. formerly of the bands Jellyfish and Imperial Drag. He’s been one of the songwriters I’ve respected the most and I was thrilled to have this chat with him. You’ll hear Roger describe what’s going on under the surface of the creative process for most artists as well as his description of the path he’s walked to become an in-demand musician who’s requested to play on albums for well-known artists and unknown hopefuls alike.  Topics Featured In This Episode [2:31] The first instrument Roger learned to play - from pots and pans to today [5:18] Hearing all kinds of music and expanding his musical horizons [9:10] Roger’s first jazz lessons and instruction [11:51] Trying to write a song and the drive to become a better songwriter [16:35] Roger’s self-education in experimenting with musical palettes (arranging) [24:40] Did Roger know he was creating something special on past albums? [36:40] The pain behind the creative process for many artists, including him [46:55] Artists Roger would love to play with Writing songs that endure: The goal of every songwriter When Roger speaks about songwriting, his eyes instantly light up. You can tell that it’s a topic that still captivates him 30 years after the formation of his first band, Jellyfish. As he recounts the first time he tried to write an original song of his own, he admits that it was amateur and awful. He was embarrassed even to ask for constructive criticism. But that didn’t deter him from trying again. Something inside told him that he’d have to fail a lot to find success, and he was willing to put in his reps. Fast forward to today and the music he created with his Jellyfish bandmates are some of the most timeless songs I know. The heart and soul of the music and the way it connects with the human condition are testaments to the benefit of all those years of hard work. In this conversation, Roger shares openly about his journey into music across the years, and to a deeper knowledge of himself as an artist and a human being. I hope you take the time to listen. What do AC/DC and the Beatles have in common? Outstanding musical arrangements One of the most fascinating parts of the conversation I had with Roger about his creative process had to do with the issue of arranging. You’ll hear me bring up AC/DC as an example of straightforward rock and roll, and the comment set Roger up to educate me on the intricacies and nuances of arranging songs in ways that connect with listeners on a deep level. We walk through the styles of the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, and more as Roger uncovers the details behind what makes a song truly good. It was a delightful journey I’d go on again anytime. At the time, did Roger realize he was making timeless music? Roger is quick to say that during the creative process you never know if what you’re after is even going to materialize, much less whether or not it’s going to become one of those timeless melodies that connect with people across generations (Think, “Yesterday” by the Beatles). It’s a process of discovery, one that takes the songwriter and artists as much by surprise as it does anyone else. But he also says that sometimes, after you’ve finished a song project, you just know it’s right, it’s the way it’s supposed to be. There’s a sense of finality and confidence that flow out of the process and into the way you feel about it after it’s done. Listen to hear Roger explain it as only a skilled and experienced songwriter can. Timeless songs connect with people on a deeper level The songs that endure are the ones that connect with us deeply. They speak to our experience, providing us an opportunity to hear an expression that represents what we would have said - or written - if we could have. If you’ve ever heard a song that made you feel that way, you know what I mean. I find Roger’s music to be those kinds of songs for me. All for his first solo album Danny Wilkerson isn't exactly in the full-time game of music, but for the past five years he's been busy writing and recording songs. He's also been busy recruiting talent and fundraising, all for his first solo album Wilkerson. The album is a true culmination of passion and persistence. Danny and I grew up in the same area, but are only recently acquainted, thanks to Lannie Flowers. Danny and Lannie are long time songwriting partners and former band mates. Danny's music career is varied. He's worked with several bands as a performing member and songwriter, and he's been on the artist management side of the things with his own management company. Lessons in the importance of relationships Danny's life and career are a lesson in the importance of relationships. The production and recording roster for Wilkerson include singer songwriter and producer Bleu McAuley, Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (Jellyfish, Beck, Imperial Drag), Joe Sieders (The New Pornographers), and several other noteworthys. To top it all off, Wilkerson was mastered at Abbey Road by Miles Showell whose resume includes work with The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, The Police, and Queen. Our conversation covers a bit of reminiscing, the making of Wilkerson, and the challenges he faced along the way. You can hear the track Let it Go Tonight from the album at the end of this episode.
