So... you think you can remake a classic horror movie. That's what Michael Bay thought, anyway, when his production shingle Platinum Dunes embarked on a new adaptation of Jay Anson's tale of mayhem on Long Island. Citizen Kane the 1979 Amityville Horror may not be, but it holds a special place in the hearts of horror fans worldwide. So who's to blame for the mess that is the 2005 version? First (and last) time director Andrew Douglas? Frequently shirtless Ryan Reynolds, miscast as axe-wielding George Lutz? Or screenwriter Scott Kosar, who picks up a surprise nomination this week for the Michael Myers Award? Whatever your take is on this misbegotten footnote in the annals of horror history, we had a blast discussing it with Gretchen McNeil, back for her 5th episode, and the second in our Amityville mini-exploration. Due to some technical issues, the quality of some of the audio is below our standards. Apologies. Hello and welcome back to the podcast! In this episode, prepare to be transformed as I continue my mini-series entitled “TV Goes To The Movies” and now explore the music for THE TRANSFORMERS franchise. As before, my focus is musically what was or was not carried over from the television episodes of a particular series to its respective theatrical feature, such as the main TV theme or scoring style. During its near 40 year history, from the original 1984 syndicated cartoon series, to the animated and live action movies, the Japanese-only series and more, music for the THE TRANSFORMERS has been remarkably varied. The vocal and score tracks have often reflected current or trendy musical approaches, leading to elements of lush symphonic strains, synth pop, hard rock and jazzy funk all being heard in various incarnations. Now, hold on to your crankshafts and let's transform and roll out! Title playtime index: Intro - 00:00:00 THE TRANSFORMERS (US, 1984 cartoon series, theme by Anne Bryant & Ford Kinder, score by Johnny Douglas and Robert J. Walsh) - 00:06:17 TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE (US, 1986 animated theatrical film, songs by Stan Bush, Lion & Spectre General, score by Vince DiCola) - 00:16:45 THE TRANSFORMERS: HEADMASTERS (1987), TRANSFORMERS: SUPER-GOD MASTERFORCE (1988) and TRANSFORMERS: VICTORY (1989) (Japan, songs & score by Ishida Katsunori, Toshiya Igarashi, Michiaki Watanabe) - 00:31:45 TRANSFORMERS (2007), TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON (2011), BUMBLEBEE (2018) and TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS (2023) (US, live action theatrical films, song "What I've Done" by Linkin Park, scores by Steve Jablonsky, Dario Marianelli and Jongnic Bontemps) - 00:38:18* *This segment also contains an excerpt from BATMAN BEGINS (2005), composed by Hans Zimmer and James Newtown Howard Additional tracks heard but not referenced - "Calling You", Theme from TRANSFORMERS: SUPERLINK (Japan, 2004), by Takayoshi Tanimoto "Time Limit", from TRANSFORMERS: LEGEND OF THE MICRONS (Japan, 2002), composed by Hayato Matsuo Stay safe out there, take care of yourself and each other! Veteran composer Jongnic "JB" Bontemps took a long and winding road to film scoring. Despite showing an early passion for scoring (and studying music at Yale), he didn't immediately enter that world. Instead, he sought a tech career, becoming a software developer and entrepreneur. But music came calling again, and JB found himself studying film scoring and building a career as one of the industry's top composers. After years of building his bona fides working under various A-list composers and scoring video games like Redfall and shows like Godfather of Harlem, he's found himself with his highest-profile work yet: Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Building off his childhood love for the robots in disguise and the groundwork that composer Steve Jablonsky had laid for him in the Michael Bay films before that, JB worked with Rise of the Beasts director (and longtime collaborator) Steven Caple Jr. to assemble a suitably robust, muscular, and era-appropriate score for the '90s-set throwback blockbusters. Together, JB and I talk about all of this -- his winding path to film composing, the value of building a team and working with valued collaborators, and using music to mark Rise of the Beasts' distinct globe-trotting adventure and '90s aesthetics. You can find Jongnic Bontemps at his official website. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is currently playing in theaters, and you can listen to the score on your preferred platform courtesy of Milan Records.

From 2018 we present the second of our three-part series Ode to Joysticks. Sit back as we move from 8-bit to 64-bit and find ourselves in worlds old and new, searching for mystical treasure, solving puzzles, joining ancient societies, driving fast cars or at the most fundamental level just trying to survive that new very scary looking new monster coming toward us. We learn how some of the top games composers, conductor and orchestral arrangers challenge themselves with each project to create something new: imagination and determination are needed in equal measure, and within the region of 100 years of experience between them there is plenty to talk about. We speak to composer Winifred Philips who alongside scoring some incredible games has encouraged others into her world with her book A Composer's Guide to Game Music. Composer Nitin Sawhney, who was awarded the Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement award, but for him it was an invitation from actor and director Andy Serkis that began for a five year adventure scoring two stunningly successful games - soundtracking gamers' moments of frustrating and exhilaration. Composer Austin Wintory who was nominated for a Grammy for his score to Journey, has built a career through a sense of exploration and curiosity. Irish composer and conductor Eímear Noone, the world's current premier conductor of video game scores. As a composer, Eimear is part of the team writing the music for World of Warcraft: Warlords of Dreanor, and conducted of The Zelda Symphony, a full four-movement symphony created from the themes from the iconic video game. Film composer Inon Zur who started off writing music as in-house composer on the Power Rangers TV series, but ended up writing video games scores to be played by the London Symphony Orchestra.Danish composer Jesper Kyd, a self-taught musician who used the Commodore 64 and Amiga as his initial tool for composing - as the computer systems grew and expanded so did his ambition. And Bulgarian composer Penka Kouneva who has worked with the likes of Steve Jablonsky on orchestration the games score for some big franchise game such as Transformers and Gear of War. Finally we speak to professor of psychology Lauren Stewart from Goldsmiths University about how the beep beep 8-bit phenomenon of the earworm has become a common malady for the serious or even casual gamer. From the Archive sees us dig into our extensive contemporary and classical music and cinema podcast archive as we rediscover interviews and discussions with artists, with our long-standing producer and presenter, Ben Eshmade. Composer Steve Jablonsky joins us once again for a new All Access interview. Steve recently re-teamed with director Rawson Marshall Thurber for Red Notice, which just recently became the biggest opening weekend ever for a film debut on Netflix. We dive into Steve's score for Red Notice and talk about balancing tone to make sure the score is fun but still has weight and stakes. Steve talks about leaning into the genre of caper films and utilizing some elements in the score that give a great nod to the genre. We also rewind the clocks a bit to discuss Steve's score to Bloodshot starring Vin Diesel, which came out right at the start of the pandemic. Steve also shares his views about scoring a film for Netflix and what his take is on the debate of seeing films in a theater vs streaming at home. A Film.Music.Media Interview | Produced & Presented by Kaya Savas
The Island | Ewan McGregor | Scarlett Johansson | Michael Clarke Duncan | Michael Bay | [2005] Join Ruben and The Russian as they digest this 2005 Sci-Fi classic, directed by Michael Bay and starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson. The Island is a 2005 American science fiction thriller film directed and co-produced by Michael Bay. It stars Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johansson, Djimon Hounsou, Sean Bean, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Steve Buscemi. The film is about Lincoln Six Echo (Ewan McGregor), who struggles to fit into the highly structured world in which he lives, isolated in a compound, and the series of events that unfold when he questions how truthful that world is. After Lincoln learns the compound inhabitants are clones used for organ harvesting as well as surrogates for wealthy people in the outside world, he attempts to escape with Jordan Two Delta (Scarlett Johansson) and expose the illegal cloning movement. Principal photography for The Island began on Sunday, October 24, 2004. The ruined buildings where Jordan and Lincoln sleep after leaving the subterranean compound are in Rhyolite, Nevada. The city parts were shot in Detroit, Michigan, with Michigan Central Station one of the notable locations. Other portions of the film were shot in the Coachella Valley, California The Island has been described as a pastiche of "escape-from-dystopia" science fiction films of the 1960s and 1970s, such as Fahrenheit 451, THX 1138, Parts: The Clonus Horror, and Logan's Run. The Island cost $126 million to produce. The original score was composed by Steve Jablonsky, who went on to score Bay's further works. It opened on July 22, 2005, by DreamWorks Pictures in North America and internationally by Warner Bros. Pictures, to mixed reviews, earning $36 million at the United States box office and $127 million overseas for a $162 million worldwide total. #TheIsland #ScarlettJohansson #EwanMcGregor #MichaelBay #DjimonHounsou #SeanBean #MichaelClarkeDuncan #SteveBuscemi #KimCoates #EthanPhillips #TheIsland2005 #MauroFiore #PaulRubell #ChristianWagner #RogerBarton #JohnMurray #SteveJablonsky #AlexKurtzman #RobertoOrci #CaspianTredwellOwen #IanBryce #WalterParkes #DreamWorksPictures #WarnerBrosPictures #ParkesMacDonaldProductions #MovieByte #MovieBytePodcast #JustChillinEntertainment --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow Us: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/moviebytepod...
Original broadcast date January 24, 2019. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2019/01/binary-system-podcast-161-bumblebee-and-other-transformers-topics/ It sure doesn't happen very often: both the East and West Coast branches of Binary System actually saw a movie before it left the theaters. But it was a Transformers movie, and the reviews were great, so how could they NOT go see it? Spoilers ahoy! Listen in as they break down everything they loved (and a couple teeny tiny things they didn't) about Bumblebee. After that they segued into...more Transformers stuff, including the Transformers The Movie mini-documentary that Kathryn recommends, IDW's Transformers: Historia, and, you know, all the other IDW Transformers books that they loved. This week's outro music is a clip from the Bumblebee score by Dario Marianelli which, seriously, if it's one thing we loved about the Michael Bay movies it was the score by Steve Jablonsky, but Marianelli did a hell of a job with the music in Bumblebee. https://www.amazon.com/Bumblebee-Motion-Picture-Score-Marianelli/dp/B07L46D6VY The mini-documentary Kathryn mentioned is called Really That Good - Transformers: The Movie (1986), and it takes a very in-depth look at how something that was basically a series of toy commercials leading to a ninety-minute toy commercial ended up being so meaningful to an entire generation of children. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9iab0z6Kyg The Youtuber who talks about The Male Gaze and how it applies to the Michael Bay Transformers movie franchise is Lindsay Ellis https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCG1h-Wqjtwz7uUANw6gazRw, and her whole Transformers Film Studies series is really, really good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRXI__Wixas&list=PLJGOq3JclTH8J73o2Z4VMaSYZDNG3xeZ7 Correction: We referred to the main character in Michael Bay's first Transformers movie as Spike. His name was actually Sam. We got it wrong because we don't actually care.
Today you'll feel all nostalgic with my discussion about Transformers directed by Michael Bay. You'll hear me discuss the cast, background and the great score by Steve Jablonsky. Sit back and relax. Enjoy --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/randy-andrews/support

The two versions of Title Theme from Observe and Report covered in this episode are soundtracks for the sci-fi audio drama Observe and Report, a story about an alien that gets stranded on earth. My name is Nate Fisher. I'm a writer and composer from Washington. I wrote the two versions of this piece to express the loneliness of an earthbound alien. The first version is a gentler solo piano piece while the second incorporates big orchestral elements for a grand cinematic feel. Let’s break it down! IN THIS EPISODE 01:33 My favorite score is Steve Jablonsky’s score for the first Transformers film. I’m also influenced by Martin O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori’s score for the Halo games. And, of course, Howard Shore and John Williams. 02:26 I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s better to start with a new project instead of a template. Templates save time, but end up making your music sound the same. I sit at the piano and just noodle around until something comes out. 03:00 Today we’ll look at two different versions of the same song. The first version (in C) is a solo piano with light orchestration. The second is bigger, with an epic cinematic sound (in G). One of my main goals with season 2 of Observe and Report was to take everything to the next level, including the theme song. 04:05 There’s a current trend in film trailers - slowing down familiar themes and giving them a big, epic sound. Listen to the trailer for The Rise of Skywalker and hear how the recognizable melody is played back in half-time and reharmonized. 04:58 When music is made to sound really big, it creates a dimension of space that dovetails well with the sci-fi idea of space. 06:55 What is epic? Some examples of how I do it include having layering melody instruments, big brass and drums, a wide dynamic range, melodies that span multiple octaves. I love the way the french horn adds a sense of adventure to my music. 08:10 There’s a nice chromatic descending line at this moment in the piece. 08:45 I avoid common pop progressions when writing for sci-fi. There’s nothing wrong with them but they don’t generally lend themselves to sci-fi themes in my opinion 09:11 In the season 2 version of the theme, I decided to use the clean electric guitar to convey the loneliness of space. And also to have an instrument that could bring some meat to the song when needed! 10:20 I had been avoiding the use of the theremin and its classic spooky sci-fi sound, but I decided I’d been staying away from it for too long and it was time to give it a spot. 10:58 There’s a nice big Hans Zimmer ‘drop’ moment where all the instruments hit together and the energy kicks in. It serves the purpose of being musical ear-candy. But it also allows a pause for when the credits begin to play. It was a balance between artistic and practical.

[Watch the video interview on our YouTube Channel] Steve Jablonsky joins us for a second All Access, this time to discuss his score for Skyscraper among many other topics. In this All Access, we get a bit of a refresher of how Steve ended up on the composing path plus his views on the action genre as a whole. We talk about how he approached Skyscraper, which stars Dwayne Johnson as a former FBI agent trying to save his family from a group of terrorists. Steve talks about working with a new director for the first time, finding the right tone that didn't make it too melodramatic and of course how action filmmaking has evolved since when he started working as a composer. We also discuss comedy scoring as well as touch upon some other projects he did recently like Game Over, Man! and the indie documentary Origin Story. Steve is one of the nicest and most humble composers working in the industry, and having him as a guest is always such a pleasure. Score: The Podcast welcomes Steve Jablonsky, award-winning composer of Michael Bay films such as the Transformers film franchise, The Island and Pain & Gain; Peter Berg films such as Battleship, Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon; Keanu; Netflix's Game Over, Man; and the upcoming Dwayne Johnson summer blockbuster Skyscraper. He is also the composer of television shows such as Desperate Housewives and video games including Gears of War: Judgment, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, The Sims 3 and Transformers: The Game. Robert and Kenny begin the show discussing Ready Player One and how Alan Silvestri's score samples iconic music from the 1980s, true to the story's nostalgic subject matter. Silvestri is also scoring Avengers: Infinity War which releases this Friday. Robert shares a story about a mistake he made with Ennio Morricone and Warren Beatty while recording a score with a full orchestra in Rome. Steve Jablonsky joins to talk about his work with Michael Bay on five Transformers films, The Island and Pain & Gain — and how Bay communicates his elaborate visual style and explosions, sometimes before the special effects even exist. In Behind the Score, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross discuss how David Fincher led to a thriving career scoring films after being in the recording and live performance industry with Nine Inch Nails. Then Steve talks about the first cue with his name on it — "The Jablonsky Variations" from Tears of the Sun — and how Hans realized then Steve was destined to become a great film composer in his own right. And how films "based on a true story" or with real-life characters mean his music has to find the different kind of balance. Lastly, Steve and the guys play a sports movie edition of the game “Name That Score,” where you — yes, you — can be a winner! Plus a story about Steve's first meeting with the great John Williams. The maestro of destruction takes the director's chair to follow up, not reboot, his wildly divisive yet insanely successful Shia LaBoeuf trilogy. In this in-depth film review we dive into the ideas the writers came up with to draw Mr. Bay back for his 4th attempt at bringing the beloved 80s cartoon to life. Sam Witwicky is gone! We have a new, more adult, star in Dirk Diggler himself - Mark Wahlberg - and it's his most challenging role yet! We meet our new band of autobots as they explore the answers to both what the transformers are made of AND...what killed the dinosaurs! And then it keeps going. Jacob Shea and Jasha Klebe are two composers who have produced exemplary work early on in their careers. Both Jacob and Jasha got their starts working with some of the most notable composers working today including Steve Jablonsky, Lorne Balfe and of course Hans Zimmer. The two of them found themselves working together when BBC Earth came knocking on the doors of Bleeding Fingers Music with their new show Planet Earth II. Hear Jacob and Jasha share their backgrounds and paths to film composing, and hear them discuss their approach to scoring Planet Earth II. They talk about the Bleeding Fingers Music model and how it has become a new platform for composers to become attached to some amazing projects. Pieter Schlosser is an award-winning film, television and video game composer known for his work on NBC's hit show You, Me And The Apocalypse, as well as his collaborations with Steve Jablonsky on Desperate Housewives, the Transformers film, and Gears of War 2 & 3 video games. As a multi-cultural multi-instrumentalist, Pieter draws on an incredible reservoir of creativity and artistic versatility. I really love these shows where we get to talk to amazing composers and explore the creative process and inspirations behind their work. Pieter Schlosser is one of those musicians that needs the prefix “multi” in front of their name - multi-linguist, multi-genre, multi-talented. And a great suffix for him would probably be, “go-getter” - time and time again, Pieter's initiative has served him well, putting him in the company of great film composers like Hans Zimmer and opening some incredible opportunities in film, TV, and video games.
Matthew Sweet introduces a selection of film music about war and military action behind enemy lines - inspired by this week's featured new release - Peter Berg's "The Lone Survivor", which has a new score by Steve Jablonsky, which will feature in the programme. The classic score of the week is Ron Goodwin's "Where Eagles Dare"; and Matthew also focuses on scores by Maurice Jarre; Anthony Collins, Hans Zimmer; Leighton Lucas; Stephen Warbeck and Dmitri Tiomkin. And there's a short tribute to the late Italian film composer Riz Ortolani. #soundofcinema.
