Send us Fan MailIn this episode, we take a ride through Breakfast in America, the massive 1979 album that turned Supertramp into worldwide superstars. Packed with unforgettable songs like “The Logical Song,” “Goodbye Stranger,” “Take the Long Way Home,” and the title track, the album blends sharp pop hooks, progressive rock touches, and a sneaky sense of wit and melancholy. We'll dig into how Supertramp balanced catchy radio-friendly hits with deeper themes of disillusionment, identity, fame, and the strange promise of the American dream. From Roger Hodgson's soaring vocals to Rick Davies' darker edge, Breakfast in America is an album full of contrast: bright melodies with bittersweet lyrics, glossy production with real emotional bite.Support the showBrowse the 33/24 Archives: Check out the backroom!Follow us:InstagramFacebookWatch us on YouTube!

In this episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles sits down with Ben Daughtry and Jonathan Palmer of Love Jones — the Louisville-born, LA-based band that has been crafting their unique blend of lounge, soul, pop, and sharp-witted storytelling for over three decades. The conversation kicks off with a shared love of live music, as both Ben and Jonathan trace their concert-going roots back to the same unlikely starting point: Van Halen. Ben recalls sneaking into a show at 14, way too young to be there, watching a then-unknown Van Halen open for Black Sabbath and feeling like "a bomb going off." Jonathan recounts his own Van Halen baptism at Freedom Hall in Louisville on the Women and Children First Invasion Tour — complete with $7.50 festival seating and his mother taking notes in the stands. From there, the episode becomes a wide-ranging tour through decades of live music obsession. The guys swap stories about Ted Nugent crowd surges, jumping on stage with GWAR in New Orleans, playing congas with Tool at an early Lollapalooza, and watching Rage Against the Machine move 60,000 people. Jonathan shares privileged industry moments — seeing The Rolling Stones at a 600-capacity room in New York alongside Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, and Questlove, and catching Nine-Inch Nails at The Troubadour when they felt "too big for the building." The conversation is fueled by genuine enthusiasm, with each story triggering another in a kind of joyful avalanche of rock and roll memory. The second half of the episode turns to the band's own story — from their residency at Largo on Fairfax, where David Bowie once sat quietly in a booth and Tool's crew became regulars, to their unexpected appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon celebrating the 25th anniversary of their debut album Here's to the Losers. Charles and the guys dig into the Cocktail Nation moment of the '90s, the making of their new album The Greatest Show on Earth — written during COVID jam sessions in a Louisville warehouse with crickets chirping and trains passing — and the cinematic, Gil Evans-influenced sound that ties its six expansive tracks together. The episode closes with the band expressing hope to get back on the road, a shout-out to their partnership with Whiskey Thief Distillery, and a tease of possible activity around the 30th anniversary of the film Swingers, on whose soundtrack Love Jones famously appeared. BANDS: Adele, B-52s, Beastie Boys, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Black Sabbath, Chicago, Combustible Edison, Devo, Earth Wind & Fire, Fishbone, Foo Fighters, GWAR, James Brown, Led Zeppelin, Love Jones, Metallica, Metric, Molly Hatchet, Morphine, Nine Inch Nails, Oasis, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rolling Stones, Sea and Cake, Steely Dan, Supertramp, Ted Nugent, The Cars, The Cocktails, Tool, Tortoise, Van Halen, ZZ Top. The Strange Brew - artist stories behind the greatest music ever recorded

John Helliwell of Supertramp returns to talk about Crime of the Century, the newly restored 1975 concert film shot at Hammersmith Odeon, and the years in which the band went from complete obscurity to one of the biggest acts in the world. He discusses the creative relationship between Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson, and how the tensions between them eventually broke the classic line-up apart. Helliwell also covers life after Supertramp, and what it means to keep performing as you get older.

On this episode of Talking Guitars, we remember legendary producer Jack Douglas, who has passed away at the age of 80. Throughout his incredible career, Douglas worked with some of rock's biggest names, including Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, John Lennon, Blue Öyster Cult, Patti Smith, and the New York Dolls. Born in the Bronx, New York, Douglas started out as a folk musician before attending the Institute of Audio Research and landing a job at the legendary Record Plant — first as a janitor, then quickly rising to become one of rock's most respected engineers and producers. Along the way, he contributed to classic recordings by The Who, Miles Davis, Alice Cooper, and many more. Douglas is perhaps best known for producing Aerosmith's classic albums Get Your Wings, Toys in the Attic, Rocks, Draw the Line, Rock in a Hard Place, Honkin' on Bobo, and Music from Another Dimension! He also engineered and co-produced landmark albums including John Lennon's Imagine, Double Fantasy, and Milk and Honey, while contributing to legendary records like The Who's Who's Next and Cheap Trick's self-titled debut album. His close relationship with Aerosmith even earned him the nickname “the sixth member” of the band, and his influence on rock music can still be heard today. Join us as we look back at the life, music, and legacy of one of rock's most influential producers.

Step inside five decades of rock history with lighting legend Howard Ungerleider, the man who’s been designing and directing Rush’s light shows since 1974. Hear how a $75-a-week mailroom gig at American Talent International — where he pulled off a rogue booking of Fleetwood Mac before he was even an agent — turned into a lifetime behind the console. Get the story of Howard landing in Toronto to babysit “a club band called Rush,” sleeping on the floor at the manager’s house with a St. Bernard, freezing his hand to a car door at -40 in Cochrane, Ontario, and later jamming with Neil Peart at his house to Genesis and Supertramp records. Howard also talks designing Roll The Bones (the one Rush tour he couldn’t operate), embedding at See Factor to build custom gear nobody else could get, and how Blue Öyster Cult first put him in front of a laser: the same craft he now brings to Foo Fighters, Tool, and Janet Jackson. Then the conversation turns to the upcoming Rush Fifty Something tour — a four-piece now with Anika Nilles on drums and Loren Gold on keys, freeing Geddy to focus on bass and vocals. Learn why Howard still “plays” the lighting console live with two boards and thousands of touch cues, how robotic spots are quietly changing the craft, and why he and Phish’s Chris Kuroda will be swapping rigs at Madison Square Garden. You’ll also hear the Paul McCartney moment in the Taylor Hawkins tribute dressing room that may have sparked the whole tour, and why Howard insists this is a rejuvenation, a celebration, and proof that no matter the rig, the room, or the era, you’ve gotta ALWAYS BE PERFORMING. Because it’s what we do. Documentary producer & record collector Jeanne Elfant Festa has made films about The Beatles, Foo Fighters, Pavarotti, Bee Gees and more. Today she discusses her latest movie on Billy Preston — revealing rare archive footage, Olivia Harrison's key role, and Eric Clapton's emotional on-camera tribute and a lot more. Check outtrailer and documentary screenings here Topics Include: Jeanne lost her entire vinyl collection in the Palisades fire. Her family and animals all escaped the fire safely. A custom-built, mathematically designed sound room housed the collection. Rebuilding takes time — the turntable alone hasn't been replaced yet. Music passion began with her Brooklyn-raised parents' rich jazz collection. Her dad snuck into the Apollo Theater via the fire escape. He carried a saxophone, jamming with musicians at the loading dock. The family soundtrack: Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker. Jeanne and her dad bonded over Bruce Springsteen's sax player. Her father did house calls exclusively for one patient — Miles Davis. Storytelling instincts came from parents who loved plays, movies, and performance. Her own record collection ranged from Rage Against the Machine to Supertramp. Vinyl's tactile magic: liner notes, textures, and each album's unique smell. Albums are movies — side one plays straight through, no skipping. Documentary filmmaking is passion-driven, not a path to big money. The Foo Fighters doc came from being in the right place. Business partner Nigel Sinclair's credits include Bob Dylan and George Harrison docs. Billy Preston first entered her life through her parents' living room stereo. Filming subjects who've passed requires diaries, archives, and extraordinary research teams. A granddaughter's undeveloped home movies transformed the Beach Boys documentary entirely. A stranger's undeveloped Beatles footage, found under a childhood bed, changed everything. Olivia Harrison unlocked archive footage and connected the team to Ringo and Clapton. Eric Clapton opened up in a way rarely seen on camera. Documentary ethics: three sources minimum, no gossip, no stunt casting ever. The Billy Preston film explores forgiveness, contradiction, and the full human condition. He goes avant-garde, a little indie-garage and honestly, I never heard a cover of Warlock before. Tony gives us some Blues and a soundtrack of blue plus more. Does anyone like Autolux, Legendary Pink Dots? Because he loves to mix it up. I like the experimental picks but nothing beats that ending with the Supertramp sax. The most important thing to take away from this episode is to take his advice: “Remember to listen to whatever the F you want to” - Tony Sandoval Question? Comments? Through a chance meeting with Leon Russell at his home studio, she was swept away with the studio atmosphere, the sound, and it was her curiosity about the recording console and gear that captured her spirit and sent her down the path of becoming a recording engineer. She was determined to work with the best equipment, the best studios, and the best musicians. And she did. She's credited on some of the best sounding albums that were ever recorded, including Steely Dan's “Aja”, Supertramp's “Breakfast In America”, Marc Jordan's “Mannequin”, Blondie's “Autoamerican”, and “Tusk” by Fleetwood Mac, just to name a few. Here to discuss her incredible journey as a pioneering audio engineer is none other than Lenise Bent.

Drummer Michael Shrieve's story reads like a rock-and-roll fairy tale — the kind of musical journey that blends youthful serendipity with restless creativity, and a lifelong appetite for pushing boundaries. Before he was a name on Santana's classic albums or a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, he was a kid with sticks and big dreams.Born in California, Shrieve grew up deeply drawn to music. As a teenager he played in his first serious band and gigged around backing rhythm and blues acts — even sitting in with seasoned performers like B.B. King and Etta James. At just 16, a pivotal moment came when he sat in during a jam at San Francisco's famed Fillmore Auditorium. His playing caught someone's ear — Santana's manager Stan Marcum — setting the stage for his astonishing ascent. At 19, Shrieve met Carlos Santana in a studio and was invited to join the band on the spot. It was a leap that would change his life. Almost immediately after joining, Shrieve found himself at the center of one of rock's defining moments: Santana's performance at Woodstock in August 1969. Barely 20 years old, his explosive drum solo on “Soul Sacrifice” became one of the enduring visual and sonic highlights of the event's documentary.Between '69 and '74, Shrieve played on Santana's first seven albums: Santana (1969), Abraxas (1970), Santana III (1971), Caravanserai (1972), Welcome (1973) and Borboletta (1974), plus the live album Lotus (1974).He wasn't just a timekeeper. On Caravanserai he co-produced and co-wrote four tracks, helping guide the band into more experimental, jazz-infused territory. His work helped broaden the possibilities of rock percussion, drawing on influences from jazz greats and Latin rhythms alike.By the mid-'70s, Shrieve was ready to expand his musical palette beyond Santana. He left the band to pursue solo projects and relocated to London. One of his first ventures was Automatic Man , a group that blended rock with progressive and funk elements. He then joined the avant-garde fusion supergroup Go, alongside formidable musicians like Steve Winwood, Stomu Yamashta, Klaus Schulze and Al Di Meola. The band released multiple albums and toured, diving deep into jazz, electronic and world music textures.Throughout the late '70s and '80s Shrieve stayed busy, playing with Hagar Schon Aaronson Shrieve (with Neal Schon and Sammy Hagar) and contributing to albums by artists as diverse as The Rolling Stones (Emotional Rescue, 1980) and Roger Hodgson of Supertramp. He also collaborated on Richard Wahnfried projects with electronic composer Klaus Schulze and recorded his own electronic music. After leaving Santana, Shrieve didn't slow down — he reinvented himself again and again. Beyond rock and fusion bands, he became a composer and session player whose credits include work with Mick Jagger, George Harrison, Pete Townshend, Andy Summers, Jaco Pastorius and many others. He also ventured into film music, composing scores for movies including Tempest and Apollo 13, and continued collaborations with musicians across genres. In 1997 he reunited with former Santana members — Neal Schon, Gregg Rolie, José Areas and Michael Carabello — in Abraxas Pool, a project that revisited and re-imagined elements of the classic Santana sound.Shrieve's contributions were formally recognized when he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 for his work with Santana, and later honored with Guitar Center's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. He's also been cited by Rolling Stone as one of rock's greatest drummers. In 2016, he briefly reunited with the original Santana lineup for the album Santana IV, again marking his deep connection to the music that made his name.Today, Michael Shrieve remains a vibrant artist. His band Spellbinder, blends jazz and improvisatory rock; he works on ambitious solo projects like Drums of Compassion; and continues to collaborate with forward-thinking musicians across genres.Michael joins us today to share his story.

In this episode, I sit down with drummer Paul Stewart for a conversation that starts with how music can connect people across oceans and turns into a deep dive on taste, touch, craft, and the long arc of a career. Paul and I talk about how I first discovered his band The Feeling years ago from a CD a friend handed me after a gig, and how that one listen turned into a long-term appreciation for the songs, the playing, and the production. Paul shares why so many musicians connected with that sound, and how their work pulled from both the 70s world of Supertramp, 10CC, Elton John, and Fleetwood Mac, and the deeper 60s roots that fed that era, like The Beatles, The Stones, The Kinks, and The Zombies. We get into drum sound, why that thuddy, dead 70s tone fits their music so well, and how those choices shaped the identity of the recordings.Paul walks me through his origin story, from being hooked on drum sound as a kid, to getting his first kit at 12, to saying yes to every playing opportunity he could find. He tells an incredible story about a middle school teacher who stayed late after school so Paul could get extra time in the drum room, and we zoom out on how mentors, parents, and supportive educators change the course of a life. From there, we talk about preparation, professionalism, and the responsibility you carry in an ensemble, including how the anxiety of being underprepared can be its own lesson in why doing the work matters. Paul also shares a regret he has about not keeping his reading chops sharper, and why playing along with records became his true north as a drummer. We dig into influences from both sides of Paul's musical world, from rock and early Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine, to the cassette tapes an uncle sent that opened the door to jazz, funk, fusion, and players like Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl, and the Tower of Power world. Paul explains how the UK acid jazz scene became a significant pull, and how an acid jazz band at music college eventually evolved into The Feeling. We also talk about what it's like working with major artists outside the band, including how touring logistics can lead to local musicians being hired, and how surreal it can be to play iconic songs with legendary voices while still remembering they're just musicians on stage doing the same job.A meaningful part of our conversation is about performance anxiety, stage fright, and the emotional extremes musicians ride before, during, and after gigs. We talk honestly about confidence, coping, and what it means to choose a healthier path, and we acknowledge that even global superstars can struggle with fear right before walking on stage. Paul and I also reflect on the approaching anniversary of The Feeling's first album, how those songs were originally recorded as a weekend friends project without any expectation of success, and how playing them now carries twenty years of growth, finesse, and perspective while still honoring the original parts that make the songs work. We close with what Paul has been up to recently, including work with Anastacia, Paul Young, The Voice UK, and the broader creative world around the band, and why music remains a powerful source of joy, balance, and hope for people everywhere.Music from the Episode:Never Be Lonely (The Feeling)Everyday and All of the Night (The Feeling)Sun Won't Shine (The Feeling)I Want You Now (The Feeling)Thank you for listening. Barry Greenfield began his musical ride in 1965 when he was just 15 years old. Over the subsequent decades, Barry has become a greatly appreciated, old-school, singer songwriter, with three number one records, twenty-five plus covers, and life as a touring musician and storyteller. He actually walked away from the music business in the mid-70s saying, “it's not for me,” and yet he remained a dedicated songwriter and performer, releasing twelve LP's while sharing his music with audiences everywhere.   Barry's autobiography, My Journey to Blue Sky, was recently published by New Haven Publishing. It covers the intimate details of his professional years, including, standing on the shoulders of various giants that he has known or worked with, like Cher, John Lennon, Larry Carlton, Supertramp, Kenny Rogers, Harry Nilsson, 10cc, and more. Barry's classic album, Blue Sky, released by RCA, has reached its 50th anniversary. And now with his book, Barry reveals the life changing experiences he received while attending the ‘music school' of the real world in those halcyon days of 1963 to 1975. Barry learned everything by listening, watching, and questioning. Please be sure to stick around at the end of the show for a very special treat.  Barry has graciously lent us his powerful hit song, “New York is Closed Tonight.,” which we'll play for everyone to enjoy.  After 9/11, CNN played “New York is Closed Tonight,” juxtaposed to what was happening to the twin towers.

RUNDOWN   A cryptic Hotshot tweet about cheering for arrests sets the tone before the guys revel in the Mariners' wild seven-game sweep and the Seahawks' statement win in Pittsburgh. The bullpen's near-perfect ERA has playoff dreams buzzing, George Kirby snaps back in style, and Sam Darnold, Ken Walker, and Riq Woolen all shine. Mitch, Brady, and Joe revel in a historic seven-game home sweep that has the Mariners suddenly in control of the AL West. The bullpen's 30+ innings with only one earned run anchors the conversation, alongside George Kirby's 14-strikeout rebound, Julio's resurgence at the plate, and Cal Raleigh's record-setting power. With Kansas City and Houston on deck, the crew debates playoff odds, MVP chatter, and whether Josh Naylor might be the perfect midseason fit in Seattle. Fresh off a 31–17 win in Pittsburgh, the crew digs into a Seahawks performance that mixed chaos with control. Riq Woolen redeemed himself with a hustle play that saved a touchdown. Sam Darnold shook off mistakes to make clutch throws, Kenneth Walker topped 100 yards with a highlight-reel touchdown, and the ball finally spread to Cooper Kupp, JSN, Horton, and the tight ends. Rick Neuheisel joins to unpack a loaded college football weekend — from Brian Kelly scolding reporters after LSU's win, to Georgia's Gunner Stockton and Notre Dame–Texas A&M's wild finish, to Arch Manning getting booed in Austin. He shares stories of media jousts from his UCLA days, weighs in on John Mateer's Heisman chances at Oklahoma, and even recalls the “Apple Cup plunge” tradition from his perfect 4–0 run against WSU. Neuheisel closes with his weekly pick, riding Nebraska as a home underdog against Michigan while eyeing the upcoming Apple Cup showdown. Bud Withers joins to discuss his new book, the first ever written on the history of the Apple Cup, just in time for another chapter in the storied rivalry. He reflects on why the UW–WSU matchup is uniquely distinctive, how Don James viewed it as “everything to lose, nothing to gain,” and why Cougar upsets often define the most memorable games.   GUESTS   Brady Farkas | Host, Refuse to Lose Podcast (Mariners on SI) Joe Doyle | MLB Draft & Mariners Analyst, Over-Slot Substack Brady Henderson | Seahawks Insider, ESPN Jacson Bevens | Writer, Cigar Thoughts Rick Neuheisel | CBS College Football Analyst, Former Head Coach & Rose Bowl Champion Bud Withers | Veteran Pacific Northwest sportswriter & author of Too Good to Be Through   TABLE OF CONTENTS   0:00 | Arrest Videos, Mariners Revival and Seahawks win! 21:23 | Stockton, Pete Carrol and Wicked Game 25:15 | BEAT THE BOYS, Presented by Fireside Home Solutions.
