Sean Ono Lennon joins us to discuss his production of the RSD release Power To The People, a 4-song live EP by John Lennon & Yoko Ono that Sean produced from recordings made at his parents' 1972 One To One concert in New York. That concert is the subject of a new documentary, One To One: John & Yoko, directed by acclaimed Scottish filmmaker Kevin McDonald, which hits IMAX screens on April 11. And musical everyman Jason Falkner (Beck, Air, and St. Vincent) discusses the story behind his short-lived Power Pop supergroup, The Grays (Falkner, with Jon Brion, Buddy Judge, and Dan McCarroll) whose legendary 1994 album, Ro Sham Bo is finally getting its vinyl debut (as a double album) just in time for Record Store Day 2025. The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music. Executive Producers (for Record Store Day) Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton. Record Store Day 2025 is April 12th. On this special bonus episode of Lipps Service, Scott sits down with a Lipps Service veteran, longtime friend, and blistering rock ‘n' roller — Luke Spiller. Famously known as the electric frontman of British rock band The Struts, Luke is getting ready for the release of his debut solo record, Love Will Probably Kill Me Before Cigarettes and Wine. The two get into everything behind the making of the new album, which is slated to be released on April 25. They discuss Luke's journey of going solo, how he met Scott, and why he wanted to make his own record outside of the band. He talks about his relationships with Jason Falkner of Jellyfish (Scott's favorite band!) and the late Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters. He also tells the stories behind a few of the new songs, including the title-track and “Devil In Me.” To close, Luke lists his top 5 solo albums from a lead singer of a band. Tune into a friendly and exciting conversation with Luke Spiller! What's your most loved and least favorite song on Jellyfish's Spilt Milk?! Jim picked the 1993 favorite by the band that Dan says unites us the most. Between the four of us, we saw the band close to 30 times in just three years but it was Adam that started a website about the band, helped write their boxed set liner notes and....it's complicated. As a result of a whole lotta fun stories, the ranking doesn't start until the 32 minute mark. So close your eyes and get comfortable because we got Roger Joseph Manning Jr, Tim Smith, Eric Dover, Jason Falkner and superfan Pablo Melons to chime in with their most and least loved songs on the album. Welcome to Discograffiti's epic exploration of The Beach Boys' classic 3rd LP, a deservedly rich, two-headed beast accessible on the Major Tier of Discograffiti's Patreon. Musician Jason Falkner—not only Beck's guitarist, but he of the amazing Jellyfish, too—and Producer/Songwriter Russ Titelman--who co-wrote Guess I'm Dumb and Sherry She Needs Me with Brian Wilson, was his pal and confidante during this time, and produced all the classic 1970s Randy Newman LPs and Brian's first solo album—hash it out on the first Beach Boys LP to carry the “Produced by Brian Wilson” credit. In this episode, we discuss working with Paul McCartney, Jason's not-so-cool surf background, what it's like to grow up having no game with the ladies, and a whole lot more. There'll be a short sneak peak running publicly for free, but the entirety of this podcast will only be accessible on the Major Tier of Discograffiti's Patreon. What's your most loved and least favorite song on Guided By Voices' 492nd album Bee Thousand?! Adam overcame his fear of assigning a 20 song record because he felt we needed to do more indie classics. Fun to hear his three co-hosts' take on a challenging 1994 lo-fi listen that was once named by Amazon music writers as the #1 indie album of all-time. We get a surprise Zoom visit from longtime 91X program director Garett Michaels (check out an extra ten minutes of his golden throat soon on Youtube) and remote opinions from Jon Wurster (Superchunk/Mountain Goats/Best Show) and Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows). WE WILL WE WILL…. What's your most loved and least favorite song on 1981's Queen Greatest Hits?! Adam came up with a fun way to finally talk about our namesake song: kicking off a four-episode series of Greatest Hits episodes! You'll never guess where we ranked WWRY. It's only the best-selling album in UK history. You've probably never heard of it. Shockingly, none of us are huge fans, despite having so many fun stories and opinions that this became our longest show to date! One of us even needed to be reminded that they worked for Queen's record label. Three of us went to high school with guest ranker Ken Dow, who shared his amazing Queen For A Day tale with us. Finally, Adam got his old neighbor, Eber Lambert, to chat about producing another Jewish Adam from California: Queen's lead singer. Esta semana en Islas de Robinson caemos en la década de los 90, un territorio que transitamos con poca frecuencia habitualmente, pero en el que también encontramos un buen montón de discos y canciones fantásticas a las que tenemos enorme cariño. Mercury-nominated and The Icicle Works frontman, Ian McNabb has done it all. The band's 1984 debut album, The Icicle Works, brought them Top 40 chart success in both the UK and US, and Ian has also maintained a highly prolific solo career working with Waterboys, Ringo Starr, Crazy Horse, Peter Buck, Lightning Seeds, and Jason Falkner amongst others. Speaking from his home in Liverpool Ian is delightful company as we discuss long musical career and whether he's describing a song from 35 years ago, or his latest releases Utopian and Ascending, Ian is equally happy to talk about it all.

For the 25th Anniversary, Brendan Benson looks back on the process of making his debut album, ONE MISSISSIPPI. In this episode, Brendan Benson reflects on the experience of unexpectedly being signed to a major label at a young age and all of the pressures that came along with that. After initially recording 4-track cassette demos with Jason Falkner, Brendan takes us through the process of making the record in New Orleans, controversially scrapping it, and then remaking the record again in San Francisco with a new band and a young Ethan Johns as the producer. From the competitive songwriter scene in Los Angeles, to touring with no experience as a frontman, to falling in love while having to work a record, we’ll hear the stories around how ONE MISSISSIPPI came together.

Okay. This one is a real treat! In the 1990’s Roger Joseph Manning Jr. and his partner Andy Sturmer formed the band, Jellyfish. And even though the released on two albums (including the first album with Jason Falkner--who I talked to on the podcast several months ago), they never managed to meet their commercial expectations. Which is insane, because their second album, 1993’s Spilt Milk is, in my opinion, one of the greatest power pop albums released over the last 50 years. Seriously. Since then Roger has played with Beck, Roger Waters, Jay-Z, Johnny Cash and more. He also wrote music with Brian Wilson. We’ll talk about that, Jellyfish, and about his new band, the Lickerish Quartet. They’re about to release their first Ep this week entitled “Threesome Vol 1”. Super jacked up about this one. Enjoy!

Jason Falkner has played with everybody. Guys like Paul McCartney, Elton John, Beck, Amiee Mann, Glen Cambell, have all worked with Jason during his career. He's had a long solo career as well as been a member of the shamefully underappreciated band, The Grays. He was was also a founding member of one of my all time favorites, Jellyfish! Enjoy!

For a lot of people, the rock music subgenre known as "power pop" is one of those "you know it when you hear it" situations. However, over the years many have tried to describe and dissect what makes power pop unique from musical cousins such as pop rock or jangle pop. Like the 70s and 80s before them, 90s power pop bands put their own spin on the sound, adding a little more guitar crunch while incorporating the hallmark harmonies, British Invasion influenced melodies and arrangements, and other key elements, thanks bands like Sloan, Jellyfish, Teenage Fanclub, Superdrag, Fountains Of Wayne and The Posies, and artists like Matthew Sweet, Tommy Keene and Jason Falkner.
Welcome to episode 105 of Love That Album podcast. It’s been a while since we’ve had a double header on the podcast, but this time around we’re doing just that. My very special guest is the charismatic and semi-regular co-host of the All Time Top Ten podcast, David Daskal. He pointed out that since it had been a while from him previously joining me on LTA, we needed to talk about TWO albums to make up for that time. We start off with a conversation about the 1994 album from indie rock band The Grays, “Ro Sham Bo”. The band included two ex-members of Jellyfish, Jason Falkner and Jon Brion. With such a pedigree in melodicism, why was this album not huge? We try to make sense of it. Then Dave and I put on our leisure suits and strut our collective stuff to the 1976 debut album “Too Hot To Handle” by the band Heatwave. Their songwriter Rod Temperton went on to write songs for one of the biggest selling records in pop history. Is “Too Hot to Handle” actually that? Not only do we give our thoughts, but the gentlemanly Will Smith of the Gentleman’s Guide to Midnite Cinema podcast contributes his thoughts about Heatwave. DIG IT!!!!! How the hell was Eric Reanimator going to find common ground between Heatwave and The Grays for his Album I Love segment? By talking about Men Without Hats, of course….so obvious. Huge thanks to the wonderful Dave, Will and Eric for being so giving of their time. You can download the show by searching for Love That Album in the iTunes store or downloading streaming directly from http://lovethatalbum.blogspot.com. Send the show feedback at rrrkitchen@yahoo.com.au (written or mp3 voicemail) or join the Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/lovethatalbum. With help from Jason Falkner of Jellyfish, Brendan Benson crafted a fine if overlong debut album in 1996′s One Mississippi. Some of us may have discovered Benson thanks to his team-up with Jack White in The Raconteurs, but he had a number of solo releases to his name by that point, and One Mississippi shows the promise of what was to come. Like so many 90s albums, the first half was satisfying while the back half became less focused and felt padded, but there is still plenty to like about this power pop debut, brought to us thanks to a twelve-month Patreon anniversary pick by past guest Keith S. Pristine power pop and low fi collideMulti instrumentalist Jason Falkner played in the Three O’Clock, Jellyfish and the Grays before embarking on a solo career in the mid-90’s. He’s also played with numerous artists, including Beck, Air and even Paul McCartney.Falkner’s latest project is an unlikely collaboration with him and low fi pioneer R. Stevie Moore. The new album, Make It Be, meets their two styles midway, with songs mostly written by Moore, featuring backing mostly by Falkner. He talks about how the pairing came about and how both of them chose which songs to record. Falkner also addresses his successful Bedtime with the Beatles series, and how soon we’ll see a new Falkner solo album.
More on Darwin's famous book. Why does it matter for philosophy, beyond providing an alternative to intelligent design? Is it really anti-religious? How can well tell if it's really a scientific theory? Talking about a species evolving trait X to enable survival sounds teleological; is it really, and is that bad? TV Eyes was a short lived supergroup featuring Jason Falkner & Roger Manning Jr, who spent time in the power pop band Jellyfish, and drummer Brian Reitzell, who was in the equally melodic Redd Kross. The trio teamed up in the early 2000’s for a debut record that combined elements of early New Wave & Punk, with touches of their previous bands. The result was an album that should’ve turned heads. But, the band was never able to secure an American record label, so the record only came out in Japan. Now, long out of print and fetching top dollar on Ebay, Omnivore Recordings finally sets things right with the release of TV Eyes – not only including the original, nine song record, but also featuring four bonus tracks from an even more rare Japanese EP, Softcore, featuring remixes. We talk to Jason Falkner about the inspiration behind the project, plus what it was like to record with one of his big influences, Paul McCartney.

Thursday night marked the 31th anniversary of John Lennon’s death. We pay tribute to one of the most influential musicians in the history of music through a special 2-hour edition of Icon Fetch. The show will feature live calls from listeners and recorded interviews with a wide array of musicians who were affected by Lennon’s talent. Among the guests are May Pang, who was Lennon’s girlfriend during the year and a half “Lost Weekend;” Delbert McClinton, who taught Lennon how to play the harmonica in the early days of the Beatles; and Tommy James, Gary Wright and Wally Bryson of the Raspberries, who all had a chance to meet Lennon during his lifetime.Other artists include Grammy winners Shelby Lynne and David Lanz; rockers Dwight Twilley and Donnie Iris; melodic songwriters Marshall Crenshaw and Jason Falkner; and underground veterans Peter Case and Steve Wynn. Several authors who have written recent books about the singer, including Robert Rodriguez, Ken Sharp and Keith Elliot Greenberg, will also weigh in with their thoughts.

Reminds me of Matt Mahaffey (Self) at times, Jason Falkner at others. Which can only be a good thing. Oj on the MySpace
