Dana and Tom with special guest, author Andrew Buss (@andrewlbuss on Twitter, IG) discuss Superbad (2007) for Andrew's new book coming out on Tuesday, February 18th, 2025 - I Am McLovin: How Superbad Became the Biggest Comedy Hit of Its Generation (available with all major book purchasers): directed by Greg Mottola, written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, music by Lyle Workman, starring Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Emma Stone, Bill Hader, and Seth Rogen.Plot Summary: So there's this flick called 'Superbad', right? Imagine two high school seniors, Seth and Evan. They're like best buds, and of course, they're total outcasts. Anyway, they're on this mission to have the most epic night ever before they head off to college. The ultimate goal? Get booze and get the girls of their dreams. But let me tell you, everything that can go wrong does go wrong. Picture a wild odyssey that involves a fake ID, cops who are a bit too eager to party, and one awkward encounter after another. It's hilarious, it's awkward, and it's got that coming-of-age vibe that makes it an absolute riot. Oh, and it's also got a bit of heart—because, you know, it's not just about the party. Meditating The Word

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 28, 2021 4:10

Today's meditation is based on James 5 from the Passion Translation I do not put my trust in the riches of this world. Worldly riches will rot, fine clothes will be eaten by moths, gold and silver will be corroded. I do not hoard up treasure for the last days by fraudulently holding back payment for services that I received from others. I don't indulge myself with the luxury and pleasure that this world offers. Instead, I am patient and filled with expectation as I wait for the appearing of the Lord. Just as the farmer waits patiently for the earth's harvest as it ripens because of the early and latter rains, I also, keep my hopes high and remain patient, for the presence of the Lord is drawing closer. Since I am part of God's family, I never complain or grumble about my brothers and sisters so that judgment will not come on me, for the true Judge is near and very ready to appear. I take the prophets as my mentors. They prophesied in the name of the Lord and it brought them great sufferings, yet they patiently endured. I honor them as my heroes because they remained faithful even while enduring great sufferings. I think of Job and all that he went through, and how the Lord ultimately treated him with wonderful kindness, revealing how tenderhearted he really is. I never need to verify my speech as truthful by swearing by the heavens or the earth or any other oath. But instead I am so full of integrity that my “Yes” or “No” is convincing enough and I do not stumble into hypocrisy. If there any believers in my church family suffering great hardship and distress, I encourage them to pray and I pray with them. And the happy, cheerful ones, I encourage them to sing out their praises and I joyously sing along. I ask the elders of the church to come and pray with me over the sick and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. God's Word says that the prayer of faith will heal the sick and the Lord will raise them up, and if they've committed sins they will be forgiven. When I offend someone, I confess and acknowledge it and pray that we are both instantly healed. I know that tremendous power is released through the passionate, heartfelt prayer of a godly believer. Elijah was a man with human frailties, just like I have, but he prayed and received supernatural answers. He actually shut the heavens over the land so there would be no rain for three and a half years! Then he prayed again and the skies opened up over the land so that rain came again and produced the harvest. That's the miraculous power of prayer. And that same miracle working power will work through my prayers if I believe. As a member of God's beloved family, I go after the one who wanders from the truth and bring him back. Because when a sinning believer is restored back to God from the error of his way, his soul is brought back to life from the dead.  Countless sins can be covered by a simple demonstration of love. Until next time, be blessed and be a blessing. ----- Music by Lyle Workman, We Are Stardust MusicMan App

Guitarist Lyle Workman is one of the more successful multi-hyphenates. He began his career in the 80s as a member of Bourgeois Tagg where he co-wrote their biggest hit, the beautiful "I Don't Mind At All". When that band broke up, he became a hugely in demand sideman and session guitarist where he lent his talents to artists like Jellyfish, Frank Black, They Might Be Giants, Alanis Morissette, Bryan Adams, Pat Monihan, Sting, Todd Rundgren and many others. As if that wasn't enough, he eventually made a name for himself as a celebrated film composer, scoring many Judd Apatow projects for screens big and small. Earlier this year he managed to release an excellent solo album called Uncommon Measures that sums up so many aspects of career perfectly. In this conversation we discuss how you go about scoring a film, hear stories of the many people he's worked with and what inspired his new album. Sting, Beck, Todd Rundgren, Sarah McLachlan, Bourgeois Tagg, and Jellyfish are just a few of the many headliners who've hired LYLE WORKMAN to play lead guitar for them. But while being a six-string sharp shooter is one way Lyle got established in the industry, the next was when Hollywood heavies began noticing that he was an excellent composer and producer, too. Soon, Lyle would find himself scoring such hit films as The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Superbad, and Get Him to the Greek, as well as HBO's Crashing and other shows. Now, Lyle has tracked a stunning new instrumental album that has yet to be released, which means no one can hear it — no one, that is, except for YOU, when you play this podcast. This episode is hosted by Jude Gold, and is brought to you by ERNIE BALL and their brilliant new ERNIE BALL VPJR TUNER, a two-in-one volume and tuner pedal you can see at ernieball.com.

[Watch the video interview on our YouTube Channel] On this episode of Film.Music.Media: All Access we visit composer Lyle Workman whose sound and skills have essentially defined a whole genre of modern comedy. We talk about his musical career as a session musician and how it all led to film composing when a chance encounter ended up nabbing him the job to score The 40 Year Old Virgin. We discuss working with Judd Apatow including on the new Netflix series Love. We discuss his approach to comedy such as his work on Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him To The Greek. Lyle talks about how the industry can typecast composers, and the challenges of trying to show off your range in other genres. Lyle has carved a defining path and sound in comedy scoring in an era where the “R-rated” adult comedy reigns supreme, and getting his insight makes this interview fascinating and fun. On June 2nd Brent's first album in 20 years, “Don’t Look Back,” will be released.  The record features a ton of amazing collaborations, including Julian Lennon, Todd Rundgren, Charlie Peacock, Wayne Kirkpatrick, Rachael Lampa, Chris Rodriguez, and the first reunion in the studio of Bourgeois Tagg in 25 years. Brent Bourgeois began performing on piano in Dallas clubs when he was only 13. He moved to California five years later with friend Larry Tagg and in 1984 formed the pop band Bourgeois Tagg with drummer Rick Walker and guitarist Lyle Workman. The group released a self-titled album in 1986 and Yoyo in 1987 (produced by Todd Rundgren). The single "Mutual Surrender (What a Wonderful World)" reached the charts in 1986, and the following year "I Don't Mind at All" hit the Top 40.

Spaceman's Transmissions (Ambient Music Podcast)

I'm doing something out of the ordinary this time. This mix I actually did quite a while ago, it was probably the 3rd or so one that I did (although I made a couple of revisions). The mix is a bit shorter than others that I've done, but I had to find things from the artists that didn't completely melt one's face (sorry Yngwie!). I had some other artists on this in the initial phases (like Mr. Malmsteen, and some Nuno Bettencourt), but didn't want it to be a lot of notes or seem a bit shred-licious. I still wanted to make it pretty chill. That was a challenge. I'm a professional guitarist by trade. I've traveled and performed in 49 states (no Hawaii yet), and over 20 countries, all in the name of playing guitar. It has gotten me everywhere that I am, and the journey is not over. So it was a matter of time for me to put something like this out. I love guitar, and guitarists, and obsess over new gear, and a lot of volume. I really love ambient music because it is something that I don't do, and it's very calming and minimal. I suppose that I'm a bit envious that the really great ambient artists create a very dramatic feeling with so little.  I opened up with the amazing Jeff Beck. He was a huge influence to me getting into playing a more fusion approach with the Blow By Blow and Wired albums. I still wear them out and pick the notes apart. His Live At Ronnie Scott's DVD is a mind blower! If you've seen the movie Superbad or The 40 Year Old Virgin, you've heard the music of Lyle Workman. He also played for many years with Beck (not Jeff). He also toured a bit with Sting. The guy has heavy credits as a studio musician. The Dream Theater tune The Count Of Tuscany was the one that initially made me think that it would be neat to do a mix of stuff from sources that aren't ambient at all. My wife and I love them, and we actually saw them play live a few years ago (I think my wife was the only woman at the show! Ha!). Putting in Xanadu from Rush is also a no-brainer. I love the prog (going to see Symphony X in Baltimore in September, google them, they are pretty heavy!). Carl Verheyen is another really heavy player with an amazing amount of studio credit and chops. I actually had a lesson with him while on tour through California in 2008. He blew my mind, no doubt. I'm still working on what he showed me. David Gilmour (of Pink Floyd) invented ambient stoner rock, and absolutely deserved a few spots in this mix. There's just something about British guitarists, and Jimmy Page is one of the best. Honestly, I only set out to learn Stairway To Heaven, and nothing more. But that planted the seed that set my life in motion for what I do now (by mistake?). Every next song I heard from Led Zeppelin was the best thing I heard in my life, and Jimmy's guitar army still amazes me. Well, I enjoyed making this mix (of course). I probably won't do another like this, I don't think. Enjoy! Turn on, tune in, rock out, THEN sleep...ambient-transmission.blogspot.comfacebook.com/tonepoetmusic
