Niall Murphy is Oh Boland, from Tuam, Co Galway, and currently based in Dublin. They've released three albums since the band started over 10 years ago - third LP Western Leisure came out May 31. On this episode of the TPOE podcast, Niall talks through all the songs on the album, touring the US, and their journey as a band. Plus going country! Oh Boland launch Western Leisure at Bello Bar, supported by Stupid Son, on Friday, July 5. Tickets: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/oh-boland-stupid-sonwestern-leisure-lp-launchbello-bar-tickets-922903117067 Buy Oh Boland - Western Leisure: https://ohboland.bandcamp.com/album/western-leisure --- Press release: Oh Boland's sound has been described as having a “rare potency”, one that exists in their live shows and two records, their 2016 debut Spilt Milk which featured in Pitchfork's “Best Underground Garage Punk Albums” of that year and its equally visceral successor, Cheap Things. Over the course of the Tuam-via-Dublin-based band's lifespan, Oh Boland has existed in several guises and their forthcoming third record heralds a compelling new phase as the solo project of founding member, Niall Murphy. The self-produced Western Leisure (mixed and mastered by Mikey Young of Eddy Current Suppression Ring and Total Control) signifies an electrifying artistic evolution spurred by Murphy's unwavering musical curiosity which hears him experiment with wistful Country motifs alongside Oh Boland's synonymous noise-rock tendencies. Written over a handful of years, many of which were spent in solitude, away from familiar recording practices and live performances, the making of this record presented Murphy with opportunities to wholeheartedly engage in musical and personal exploration. Following a shift in Oh Boland's line-up in 2018 and a period of touring, Murphy worked alone to create demos that would eventually grow into these ten simultaneously invigorating and introspective compositions. Drawing from a number of influences such as Robert Wyatt's 1974 LP Rock Bottom, Arthur Russell, and Pavement's sprawling and ambitious Wowee Zowee, Murphy describes how Western Leisure was shaped by a renewed approach and process to songwriting. “I felt unencumbered when I was writing these songs. I suppose, there's sometimes an insular nature to making music, to have the necessary headspace to write. During that time, I was alone with a lot of records, listening to some different things and found myself naturally drifting outside of the lines a little bit to what I was used to doing.” Produced by Mark Chester Recorded at Start Together, Belfast, September 2021 Mixed and Mastered by Mikey Young Words and Music by Niall Murphy Niall Murphy- Guitars, Drums, Piano, Organ, Rhodes, Steel Guitar, Vocals Ross Hamer- Bass, Vocals Artwork by Joe Casey Digitised by Aoife Anna Mullan

In the early 1990's Jellyfish released two albums that, while overlooked at the time, have become essential cult classics. This includes their sadly overlooked 1993 masterpiece "Spilt Milk". An album, which is not one my favorite albums of all time--I'll even go so far as to say it is one of the most astonishing power-pop albums ever recorded! (I'm dead serious). Over the last three years Roger has released 3 EP's with the band The Lickerish Quartet (with former Jellyfish touring members Eric Dover and Tim Smith), he reissued both of his previous solo albums ("Land of Pure Imagination" and "Catnip Dynamite"), he's also just released his latest EP "Radio Daze" on Omnivore Recordings.  On this weeks episode, we discuss one of the most underrated albums by one of the most underrated bands of the 1990s: Spilt Milk by Jellyfish.  Only the band's second outing, Spilt Milk is a fully realized collection of of meticulously crafted pop songs, with orchestration and lyrics that elevate those songs way above your normal pop fare. After a critically acclaimed, but commercial disappointing debut, the creative core of the Jellyfish- Andy Sturmer and Roger Manning Jr - set out to create their masterpiece. Supported by a veteran producer and engineer, and backed by a number of top notch studio musicians, many believe the band succeeded in that goal.  Released at a time when record buying public was more interested in the distorted guitar and vocals of grunge than a band drawing critical comparisons to Queen and the Beach Boys, the the album  fared worse the charts than its predecessor. This, combined with the toil of making the "perfect" album took its toll on the band. Spilt Milk  was not only their crowning achievement, it was to be their last album.

Hello and welcome to How Did I Get Here? From The Vault! In celebration of 30 years of Jellyfish's classic album, Spilt Milk, today we go back to episode 536 with Craig Dorfman, author of "Brighter Day: A Jellyfish Story"! This show was originally released on 10/24/2016. Below are my original notes form the show.  Are you a fan of the band, Jellyfish? Do you ever wonder why they only released two albums (Bellybutton - 1991, Spilt Milk - 1993) and broke up? Do you ever wonder what ever happened to the members of the band? Well, for episode 536 I talk to Craig Dorfman, the man who wrote the book about Jellyfish. The book is called, "Brighter Day: A Jellyfish Story" Craig just picked up distribution last week, so it should make its way into some stores in the next few months, but for now you can get it the "Brighter Day: A Jellyfish Story" facebook page. I reached out to Craig and got a copy of the book. I absolutely loved it. Jellyfish is one of my favorite bands and it was great to hear the whole story told by the people that lived it and told in a single narrative that keeps you engaged the whole time. Craig and I have a great conversation about finding the dozens of people involved in the story and interviewing them and working on the book for over 7 years, his love of music and these guys and their life story and much, much more. I hope you enjoy getting to know Craig. I sure did. Let's get down! If you feel so inclined. Venmo: venmo.com/John-Goudie-1  Paypal: paypal.me/johnnygoudie
