On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Tim Smith (The Lickerish Quartet, Sheryl Crow, Umajets, Jellyfish, etc.). Ex-Jellyfish members Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (Beck, Air, Cheap Trick, Imperial Drag), Tim Smith (Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, The Finn Brothers, Sheryl Crow, Umajets) and Eric Dover (Imperial Drag, Slash's Snakepit, Alice Cooper, Sextus)—released their third and final child, Threesome Volume 3, May 20, 2022 on Stranger Danger Records and Tapes, distributed by Burnside and the Orchard in the U.S. and by Lojinx in the U.K. and Europe. It's available now on digital outlets and on the band's official website. Threesome Volume 3 makes its way into the world via remote writing, recording, and mixing. The challenges we've all faced these last years forced Roger, Eric and Tim to finalize this EP through a series of emails, and phone calls. Home recording studios were redesigned and outfitted to complete the final four songs that were originally written together in 2017. Threesome Volume 3 completes the trilogy started with the release of Threesome Volume 1 in 2020, which was called a “masterpiece” by many critics and fans alike. Threesome Volume 2 was released in early 2021, and its first single, “Snollygoster Goon,” showed another side of the band and its versatility as writers, singers and musicians. “Fortunately,” the EP's first single and video, is a bouncy tune sung by Tim Smith that drips with the signature harmonies and melodic structures The Lickerish Quartet have been known for, alongside a deeper, darker lyric that speaks to the universal ideas of heaven, hell, dogma and belief. As a co-write with their executive producer, Adam W. James, Eric's slide guitar soloing, Roger's keyboards and string arrangement, and Tim's melodic bass lines combine for the listener to perhaps harken back to early FM radio hits of the ‘70s. “New Days” was released as the second single and video on April 22. As sung by Roger, it's a tale of remembering the past with the longing psychedelic hope of the future. Eric's lyric touches pastoral images of optimistic youth and shaping moments with the desire to keep moving forward, onward, and probably westward. Lush reverb guitars, grooving bass and drums with evolving vocal harmonies celebrate the hope we all share for new beginnings. “You All Alone” starts with a jarring string ensemble as Eric's lead vocal then weaves a story of obsession and pursuit. Jagged drums and bass, razor wire guitars and another excellent string arrangement by Roger leads our hero towards satisfaction, but at what cost? Who is the hunter, and who is the hunted? “In The Meantime” rounds out the EP. Sung by Tim, the song ponders where do YOU go when you are feeling the crush of a world you no longer recognize? Topical, but also timeless, “In The Meantime” proffers to float rather than sink or swim. The theme of burying down deep is married to a pulsing, shouting wall of guitar sound and fury, but with a non-violent narrative. Those most precious things that bring us happiness--to love someone, do something, or have something to hope for--are sung about with fearlessness. They continue to engage with their fans via their website and “Experiences”--a series of collaborative connections of writing together with folks, performing on songs submitted to the band, personalized songs and messages, lessons in songwriting and production, as well as numerous Zoom-hosted breakdowns of their songs in-studio followed by a Q&A with the fans about the process, choices made, and equipment used to create their music. Meanwhile, Sony Japan recently partnered with them to release all three EPs on June 29, as a collection entitled Fables From Fearless Heights, which will include two previously unheard cover songs, as well as a special “best of” vinyl LP in that region. Sherry and Tim chat about The Lickerish Quartet's new EP and much more! Please visit thelickerishquartet.com for more information.

It's a couple of straight shooters this week.  First up is punk legend John Doe. John's been exploring the intersection of punk and rockabilly for over 40 years now (X's 2020 album Alphabetland is an incredible return to form), but his solo career is often much quieter, more Americana. His new album, Fables in a Foreign Land is maybe his best yet. Here we discuss the Hispanic influence on parts of the new album, writing poetry, X's recent comeback, and a couple stories from the set of Road House, one of the greatest movies ever made!    Then we catch up with Roger Manning Jr. of the Lickerish Quartet. Roger's career includes influential bands like Jellyfish, the Moog Cookbook and Imperial Drag. In addition to touring with artists like Beck and Morrissey, Roger's latest project is the Lickerish Quartet, which also includes some former collaborators. They're new ep, Threesome Vol. 3, concludes their "Masterpiece" series of fantastic eps. Roger shares stories from his long career, lots of business advice, shopping in Salt Lake City, and much more.    Two musical geniuses. We're hanging out with Roger Joseph Manning Jr. today at WASTOIDS. Maybe you know him from Jellyfish, Imperial Drag or the Lickerish Quartet, or from his long string of solo albums. Or maybe you've spotted his name in the credits of albums by Beck, Blink 182, HAIM, Jimmy Eat World, Lana Del Rey, Nate Ruess, The Format, and many, many more. 25 years ago, he and his musical partner Brian Kehew embarked on a truly strange journey into the musical technology of the past, which helped to kick off a synthesizer renaissance. We're talking about The Moog Cookbook, the duo he and Brian started, adopting the pseudonyms Meco Eno and Uli Nomi. They donned sci-fi-inspired cheeky astronaut gear—even before the French duo of Daft Punk got their own retro futuristic headgear and played cover versions of alternative rock standards that were dominating the radio airwaves at the time—bands like Green Day, Soundgarden, and Weezer, as well as classic rock songs by Van Halen, David Bowie, and Led Zeppelin, the Cookbook released two albums in 1996 and 1997, which caught the attention of Air, who invited the duo to collaborate, and Dave Grohl, who commissioned Cookbook-ified synth versions of Foo Fighters songs. Along with the  b-sides collection Bartell, these albums still resonate with warm, analog synth sounds. Part pastiche, part ironic send up, and part genuine, cross-genre/generation musical conversation, the Cookbook epitomized a certain strain of ‘90s pop culture that raided the past for inspiration and generated something that continues to buzz with a nostalgic glow. We caught up with Manning in his studio to learn more…

As musicians, finding the balance between wanting to evolve and experiment, and making the music your fans know you for is difficult. Soul pop masterminds Fitz and the Tantrums have managed to produce incredibly diverse records while maintaining, and even growing, their dedicated fanbase. Today's guests, Joe Karnes and Jeremy Ruzumna are key members of the chart-topping group.   While they are mostly known for being in Fitz and the Tantrums, both Joe and Jeremy have had long musical journeys. Joe found success with the glam rock band Imperial Drag, who opened for Alanis Morissette's Little Jagged Pill tour. Jeremy found success as a keyboard player and songwriter for the legendary Macy Gray and raked in many accolades for his co-writing work. In today's episode, we hear about Joe and Jeremy's musical journeys and what their lives were like before joining Fitz and the Tantrums. We talk about the challenges that come with trying to find your style and why it is more important to know who you are rather than trying to be everything. This is not easy because you want to create and make a living, but if you stick to your guns, you will find your niche. Our wide-ranging conversation also touches on the importance of having a good work ethic and being professional, what it takes to balance touring and family life, what to look out for when signing record deals or advances, and the value of being kind to fellow musicians. Not only are Joe and Jeremy gifted musicians, but they are incredible human beings, so be sure to tune in today!  Key Points From This Fitz + The Tantrums Episode:•   Hear about how Jeremy first became interested in music. •   The role that Joe's family played in introducing him and getting him interested in music. •   Some of the earliest bands Jeremy and Joe played in and what they learned in these formative years. •   Joe's experience of being in Imperial Drag, his first band that was signed by a record label. •   How Jeremy came to work with Macy Gray, how this relationship worked, and what Joe learned from this. •   What Joe's life looked like after Imperial Drag broke up, before starting Fitz and the Tantrums. •   Being in a band has its challenges and rewards. •   Jeremy's life and career path after he stopped working with Macy Gray. •   The importance of defining your own style rather than trying to be a jack of all trades. •   How Jeremy met John Wicks, the drummer of Fitz and the Tantrums. •   The chemistry that everyone had when Fitz and the Tantrums came together. •   Why Fitz and the Tantrums do not necessarily think about how a piece will translate to a live performance when they are recording. •   How the band has approached recording with their last three records. •   As humans, we like to categorize things, so when bands change their style, it throws fans off. •   Fitz and the Tantrums have managed to evolve while still keeping a devoted fanbase. •   Who is currently in the band's crew and the roles everyone plays. •   Joe and Jeremy's tips on how to navigate publishing deals and what musicians should be looking out for.  •   Why you should generally be cautious about advances in the music business. •   What Joe and Jeremy have learned about how to treat opening acts. •   The importance of making people feel as comfortable as possible. •   Some important lessons that you learn from opening for many different bands. •   Why Chris Seefried was chosen as Picking up the Pieces' producer. •   The experience of performing on late night T.V. •   How and why Fitz and the Tantrums moved from Dangerbird to...

Unconventional Genius
Roger Joseph Manning, JR. Songwriter and Musician on The Creative Process Behind Timeless Music

Unconventional Genius

It is quite common these days to hear people talking about the creative process. Anyone from graphic designers to app designers legitimately use the phrase to describe what it takes to be successful at what they do. But a long-time area of fascination for me has been the creative process that goes into making timeless music. And when that process is done in the context of a group of people - a band - it’s nothing short of amazing. I’m immensely honored to be able to present you with this conversation I recorded with Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. formerly of the bands Jellyfish and Imperial Drag. He’s been one of the songwriters I’ve respected the most and I was thrilled to have this chat with him. You’ll hear Roger describe what’s going on under the surface of the creative process for most artists as well as his description of the path he’s walked to become an in-demand musician who’s requested to play on albums for well-known artists and unknown hopefuls alike.  Topics Featured In This Episode [2:31] The first instrument Roger learned to play - from pots and pans to today [5:18] Hearing all kinds of music and expanding his musical horizons [9:10] Roger’s first jazz lessons and instruction [11:51] Trying to write a song and the drive to become a better songwriter [16:35] Roger’s self-education in experimenting with musical palettes (arranging) [24:40] Did Roger know he was creating something special on past albums? [36:40] The pain behind the creative process for many artists, including him [46:55] Artists Roger would love to play with Writing songs that endure: The goal of every songwriter When Roger speaks about songwriting, his eyes instantly light up. You can tell that it’s a topic that still captivates him 30 years after the formation of his first band, Jellyfish. As he recounts the first time he tried to write an original song of his own, he admits that it was amateur and awful. He was embarrassed even to ask for constructive criticism. But that didn’t deter him from trying again. Something inside told him that he’d have to fail a lot to find success, and he was willing to put in his reps. Fast forward to today and the music he created with his Jellyfish bandmates are some of the most timeless songs I know. The heart and soul of the music and the way it connects with the human condition are testaments to the benefit of all those years of hard work. In this conversation, Roger shares openly about his journey into music across the years, and to a deeper knowledge of himself as an artist and a human being. I hope you take the time to listen. What do AC/DC and the Beatles have in common? Outstanding musical arrangements One of the most fascinating parts of the conversation I had with Roger about his creative process had to do with the issue of arranging. You’ll hear me bring up AC/DC as an example of straightforward rock and roll, and the comment set Roger up to educate me on the intricacies and nuances of arranging songs in ways that connect with listeners on a deep level. We walk through the styles of the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, and more as Roger uncovers the details behind what makes a song truly good. It was a delightful journey I’d go on again anytime. At the time, did Roger realize he was making timeless music? Roger is quick to say that during the creative process you never know if what you’re after is even going to materialize, much less whether or not it’s going to become one of those timeless melodies that connect with people across generations (Think, “Yesterday” by the Beatles). It’s a process of discovery, one that takes the songwriter and artists as much by surprise as it does anyone else. But he also says that sometimes, after you’ve finished a song project, you just know it’s right, it’s the way it’s supposed to be. There’s a sense of finality and confidence that flow out of the process and into the way you feel about it after it’s done. Listen to hear Roger explain it as only a skilled and experienced songwriter can. Timeless songs connect with people on a deeper level The songs that endure are the ones that connect with us deeply. They speak to our experience, providing us an opportunity to hear an expression that represents what we would have said - or written - if we could have. If you’ve ever heard a song that made you feel that way, you know what I mean. I find Roger’s music to be those kinds of songs for me. They guide me along my journey, helping me to express my own thoughts and feelings about the pains and joys I’ve experienced along the way. He’s one of the musical greats I have long looked up to and this conversation was something I’ll never forget. I hope you listen. All for his first solo album Danny Wilkerson isn't exactly in the full-time game of music, but for the past five years he's been busy writing and recording songs. He's also been busy recruiting talent and fundraising, all for his first solo album Wilkerson. The album is a true culmination of passion and persistence. Danny and I grew up in the same area, but are only recently acquainted, thanks to Lannie Flowers. Danny and Lannie are long time songwriting partners and former band mates. Danny's music career is varied. He's worked with several bands as a performing member and songwriter, and he's been on the artist management side of the things with his own management company. Lessons in the importance of relationships Danny's life and career are a lesson in the importance of relationships. The production and recording roster for Wilkerson include singer songwriter and producer Bleu McAuley, Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (Jellyfish, Beck, Imperial Drag), Joe Sieders (The New Pornographers), and several other noteworthys. To top it all off, Wilkerson was mastered at Abbey Road by Miles Showell whose resume includes work with The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, The Police, and Queen. Our conversation covers a bit of reminiscing, the making of Wilkerson, and the challenges he faced along the way. You can hear the track Let it Go Tonight from the album at the end of this episode. The full album is available on iTunes and DannyWilkerson.com. This week we look at 1996, a year that celebrated the past while looking to the future. In part 1, we dig into the first half of 1996; and it was a busy six months. January includes stories on the evils of Alternative Rock and near fatal incidents involving some big name celebrities. Additionally, it included new releases from ACCEPT and Mr. Big. We head into February of 1996 by discussing some fantastic rock releases. It was a month that included fresh material from Bad Religion and Enuff Z'nuff. It also featured new releases by veteran artists like Deep Purple as well as Bruce Dickinson.  February 28th was a monumental day for KISS fans as the original band appeared in full regalia at the Grammy Awards. This week we give you our reactions to this event as well as our take on the mania that was the KISS Reunion Tour. [caption id="attachment_34556" align="alignright" width="300"] 1996 Year in Review Part 1 [/caption] The month of March, 1996 was a busy on in the rock and metal world. Judas Priest returned with a new lead singer, KISS released MTV Unplugged, and Stone Temple Pilots solidified their standing with Tiny Music. Additionally, the Beatles returned to the top of the heap with their Anthology album release. The big story of April 1996 is certainly the Unabomber arrest. Ted Kaczynski was found holed up in a Montana cabin after years of harm. Also, Local H releases their As Good As Dead album on April 16th. We're not drawing any parallels (or are we?). May of 1996 was chock full of great music releases. New material by hard rock stalwarts Scorpions and Great White was premiered. Soundgarden wrapped up their golden age with Down on the Upside. Additionally, new music from King's X and a fantastic one-and-done album by Imperial Drag. We close out this week's episode discussing June of 1996. News stories covered include the Communications Decency Act of 1996 and the kickoff to KISS' reunion tour at Detroit's Tiger Stadium. Music covered in June includes Zakk Wylde's first solo effort, Book of Shadows, and the aforementioned KISS with their You Wanted the Best release. We had a blast looking back at the first half of 1996. Included in this episode are discussions of sports stories of the year as well as popular television shows. All that and, of course, plenty of classic commercials. If you enjoyed this Year in Review episode be sure to check out our Year in Review archive! With ties to the perfectionist power-pop of Jellyfish and Guns ‘n Roses guitarist Slash’s Snakepit, this one-album-and-done band is perfect fodder for Dig Me Out - Imperial Drag and their self-titled 1996 album. Combining T. Rex grooves with analog synths, Imperial Drag we found more in common with British glam revisionists like Suede and Placebo than their North American alternative and indie rock counterparts. So why didn’t these radio friendly hooks grab mainstream listener ears? We discuss, and make sure to share your thoughts as well.
