Though two composers had won Oscars for their scores on previous Alan Parker films, the director didn't reach out to them to write music for his first straight nonmusical drama in almost 10 years. Neither Giorgio Moroder or Michael Gore would have fit the mold for the music needed for "Angela's Ashes," based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir by Frank McCourt. John Williams had read the book and agreed to do the score, opting to forgo any of the typical Irish instruments that he employed seven years earlier for "Far and Away." Host Jeff Commings examines the score's universal appeal through its two themes played on piano and strings, as well as some cues that were not used in the final film version. As this film was unspooling in theaters in late 1999, Williams was ready to conduct a six-part composition for a short film by Steven Spielberg about the American experience. Enjoy a portion of that composition on this episode as well as we move ahead to the new millennium!

Phil and Kenny are joined by actor/writer/producer Lola Kelly to discuss “Oscar Bait: The Movie” to break down the ultimate question: Can a movie, made entirely out of Oscar Bait-y elements - like beloved, Pulitzer prize- winning source material, a cast made up entirely of people with accents and a heavy helping of PPP (Period Poverty Porn) - actually win an Oscar or 12? The answer to this, and many more questions, can be found within this week’s podcast (or on Wikipedia, but still listen to the podcast ‘cause Lola is a killer guest)!

Gastheer Coen Haver nodigde de Vlaamse componist en Williams-adept Joris Hermy uit voor een verkenningstocht langs de maestro's fraaiste en - voor sommigen - minder bekende soundtracks. Do you remember how you first learned about leadership? Today’s show will make you take a step back and reflect on that. Maybe it was in school, an internship, or at your first corporate job. Maybe you're an entrepreneur, and it was when you launched your first company. My guest today has a really interesting career journey. She is going to be sharing how she learned about leadership in an unexpected place. Helen Rothberg, PhD, was a bartender in New York City throughout her academic career. She has also consulted with Fortune 500 companies, small technology start-ups, and nonprofit organizations. She speaks regularly at associations, alumni, and student gatherings about leadership and bartending. She is the author of The Perfect Mix: Everything I Know About Leadership I Learned as a Bartender. She has dual degrees in business and behavioral science. She is a professor of strategy at the School of Management at Marist College, senior faculty at the Academy of Competitive Intelligence, and president of consulting firm HNR Associates.   Show Notes [02:49] Helen originally planned on becoming a doctor. [03:30] Having summers off was a big motivation for Helen to go into an academic career. [03:54] She also realized that there was something special about helping young people find something magnificent in themselves. [04:11] She became addicted to helping young people have an impact on the future. [04:28] She also helps companies build a future. [05:49] Helen's book is a fantastic book, and Deirdre thanks her for writing it. [06:25] Helen realized all of the skills, about management, being successful, and leadership were learned when she was behind the bar. [07:20] She thought the book would be meaningful. [07:46] Deirdre was also a bartender, and that is one the reasons the book resonates. It's also interesting how these bartending stories relate to corporate stories. [09:03] A friend recommended that Helen match the stories to corporate life. [09:45] ADVICE is Helen's recipe for leading yourself. [10:14] The A is about taking action and the lesson is doing more and saying less. [10:18] D is about determination and finding a way to get things done with civility and ingenuity. [10:35] V is about vision which drives everything. A leader turns on the light and shares the vision. [11:02] The I is for integrity. Tell the truth all the time, don't create drama, and if you do own what's yours. [11:35] C is for communication which is one of the hardest things to do well. [12:00] E is for empathy dare to care, because everyone has a story. [12:23] Stand in your own shoes and don't be afraid to be your authentic self. [13:02] Shape shifting and having the courage to change. Have the courage to leap. [14:15] Helen's favorite story is the story about Eduardo in the empathy chapter. [17:55] Helen shares the story where Eduardo regained his humanity. [18:45] A story about communication and five guys in a bar. Communication is more than just words. [21:17] Actions speak louder than words, and there are other ways to handle situations rather than being violent. [27:30] Deirdre shares a story about how she had a similar moment, but decided to leave the job. Once we feel threatened it's hard to move forward. [29:55] Helen's biggest lesson learned is that bartending, just like life, is about relationships. [31:03] Helen also learned how to build a community around herself. [33:34] Letting people shine and do what they do best makes great things possible. [35:16] Helen shares how Frank McCourt who wrote Angela's Ashes was her English teacher in 10th grade. He was her first influencer. [37:50] He made her believe that at a young age she could do it and be a writer. [39:59] When we are young, we don't realize that we are stressed. Walking and dance class always made Helen feel better. [42:16] She learned lessons from living life and wasn't afraid to say so. It's important not to get lost in life. Keep something that is yours. This will help manage stress. [43:53] Trust yourself and ask yourself what really matters to you and what you can do to support it. No one could tell a story better than Frank McCourt. His first book, Angela's Ashes, remains one of the most compelling accounts of poverty, alcoholism, and the longing for a better life. It won a Pulitzer Prize, and transformed McCourt from a modest immigrant and a lifelong high school teacher, into a literary celebrity. In this episode, you'll hear McCourt hold forth with tremendous humor and that lyrical voice - about the miseries of his childhood in Ireland, as well as his passion for teaching and writing.

RHLSTP #57: Michael Legge - Spreading All Your Nits About. For the first time in RHLSTP history, a guest has been unable to make the recording at the last minute. Al Murray had to drop out due to illness and so Rich was forced to find a new guest who could get to central London in an hour. And that guest was Michael Legge - no, not the one from the film Angela's Ashes or the blind or deaf Hereford-based massage therapist. The one from the Bollings and Nerrin Podcast. I can only apologise. But it turns out that the podcast might be even better with no preparation (ha, as if there's any anyway) and last second bookings cos Michael has funny stories about how he copes with people playing music on the bus, falling out with Robin Ince, Richard's inability to clap, and why he won't eat stuff that's come out of an animal. And there's more serious chat about the rise of the new-sexism in comedy and an almost entirely successful comedy of nostalgia about a show that nobody in the audience seems to have heard of. It gets awkward and weird, but they push through that and find some funny stuff again. He's no Al Murray and he might not even be the Michael Legge that you're thinking of, but he was the best we could do in the time available.SUPPORT THE SHOW!Check out our website and become a badger and see extra content http://rhlstp.co.ukSee details of the RHLSTP tour dates http://richardherring.com/gigsBuy DVDs and Books at http://gofasterstripe.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

RHEFP 2013 #10: Michael Legge, David O'Doherty and Felicity Ward - Orangeman's Day. Richard is a bit frazzled and confused as the daily grind of two shows a day starts to take its toll, but a podcast full of comedy talent will revive him. Plus he's just seen Clare Grogan in the street. Michael Legge is back as a last minute replacement for a jet-lagged Bo Burnham (he'll be on the show on Tuesday), chosen as the comedian who is most similar to the YouTube sensation and not because he was the only comic on Twitter at 9 this morning. He has more stories of being mistaken for the other Michael Legge (from Angela's Ashes), confused women in train stations and his love for Mrs Brown's Boys. Then there's five minutes stand-up from the brilliant Mary Poppins hating Felicity Ward, before David O'Doherty arrives to tell us about his stolen bike wheel, what happens when you try to cash a giant novelty cheque and how he's managed to create 12 Fringe shows in as many years, which should shut Rich up for a bit. With added feedback to annoy the audiophiles and help pinpoint them to the police when they complain. Plus a profound and beautiful song about life. A right cracker in fact.
