Carinn and Kate are joined by special guest and friend, Caro Burke, a writer whose MFA thesis examined the portrayal of both target and perpetrator of sexual assault in contemporary literature. We are thrilled to have her with us to discuss this game-changer of a movie.   ** Bait and switch? We start by discussing what our expectations were for this movie from the trailer vs the final product. (03:15) ** Complicated Woman: Cassie. Even the character's name, Cassandra, is a nod to Greek mythology with a deeper meaning you need to know. (07:58) ** Scenes. We discuss so many of our favorite scenes: (1) the opening sequence where Cassie ominously announces - “I said what are you doing?” (09:36); (2) the two scenes involving Alison Brie and Connie Briton that reveal so much about Cassie's character, but also about how other women are complicit (14:43); (3) the falling in love sequence with Bo Burnham that is straight out of a romcom (23:22); (4) the soliloquy at the end that made Carey Mulligan want to do this movie in the first place and that shocking ending (33:50). ** What's Your Damage, Heather? We discuss Cassie as an addict, which was a surprising element of her damage straight from creator Emerald Fennell. (45:02) ** What She said - Emerald Fennell. We deep dive into this multi-talented, Oscar-winning actress, screenwriter, director and producer for some amazing quotes and things to think about. Are women allowed to imagine things? (47:47) ** Who Won The Movie? For us, it's the aesthetics, hands down: the set design, the wardrobe, the music, in other words, the beautifully wrapped candy that is this movie. (55:10) ** Takeaways - The Burke Test. We put Promising Young Woman through the factors of the “Burke Test,” which is a test Caro defined for exploring depictions of sexual violence in contemporary literature. Move over Bechdel test, we've got the Burke Test for you! (59:22)  ** For Carinn's takeaway she raises the villain aspect … the nuanced portrayals of villains and “bad guys” in this movie. There are no clear answers, which adds to the brilliance of the film. (77:22) ** For her takeaway, Kate returns to a favorite theme...female friendship and how this movie is a love letter from Cassie to Nina. (84:35) Support this podcast

LIAF 111: “Queer is Questioning” From The Spaces Between Podcast with Al Jeffery What does it mean to call yourself queer? Today on Life is a Festival, I'm honored to share an interview I did on Al Jeffery's brilliant show, “The Spaces Between,” discussing queerness as a form of radical curiosity. We open with a comparison of vulnerability and openness, and how to use embodiment to support good mental health. We discuss what it means to “queer” something and how psychedelics and identity-expanding practices are in and of themselves queer. We talk about temperament, attachment style, character and identity and how you can release your own personal mythology by getting down to basic physiology. We close with learning to love the questions themselves, which in our binary culture can be the most difficult love, and yet the most rewarding. Al is a facilitator, community-designer, Top 30 Under 30 entrepreneur, keynote speaker, author and leadership virtuoso. He is dedicated to understanding disconnection and restoring connection in our lives, leadership and communities. Al hosts the Spaces Between Podcast, an open-inquiry into restoring community in the 21st Century, which I highly recommend. "One writes such a story [The Lord of the Rings] not out of the leaves of trees still to be observed, nor by means of botany and soil-science; but it grows like a seed in the dark out of the leaf-mold of the mind: out of all that has been seen or thought or read, that has long ago been forgotten, descending into the deeps." - J.R.R. Tolkien For this episode we are delighted to be joined by Dr. Holly Ordway, Fellow of Faith and Culture at the Word on Fire Institute. We discuss her recent title, Tolkien's Modern Reading: Middle-earth Beyond the Middle Ages, which addresses the claim that Tolkien read very little modern fiction, and took no serious notice of it. What Holly reveals is that Tolkien was in fact was intimately connected with the literature of his own time and concerned with the issues and crises of modernity.  In this episode we discuss Holly's book and also take an in-depth look at some of the themes in Tolkien's writings that may have been influenced by this interest in modern literature. It's been two years since Gary Gulman released his remarkable stand-up special ‘The Great Depresh.' And despite a global pandemic that caused its own parallel mental health crisis, he says he's really never felt better. The 51-year-old comedian is currently touring two new hours of material, one of which will land him at Carnegie Hall in November, less than five years after he walked out of a psychiatric ward. In this episode, Gulman opens up about how he turned things around and achieved a new level of comedy confidence that has allowed him to be vulnerable on stage in a whole new way. He also weighs in on Bo Burnham's anxiety-themed special ‘Inside,' previews his role in Amy Schumer's new show, looks back at his “miserable” time on Dane Cook's ‘Tourgasm' and a lot more.Follow Gary Gulman on Twitter @GaryGulman and Instagram @garygulmanFollow Matt Wilstein on Twitter @mattwilsteinFollow The Last Laugh on Instagram @lastlaughpod Highlights from this episode and others at The Daily Beast. What can screenwriters learn from the storytelling techniques used by stand-up comedians? Standup comedians can keep audiences gripped to their every word for over an hour, and often bring them to emotional climaxes by the end. So how do they do it and what tools can apply to scripted narratives? For this deep dive into standup, Stu and Chas are joined by the super-talented comic and podcaster Alice Fraser. Which is rather fortuitous. Because not only are we schooled on comedy techniques, but because Alice also has a Masters in Narrative Rhetoric. So as we dive in to NANETTE by Hannah Gadsby, BABY COBRA by Ali Wong and IT'S THE FIREWORKS TALKING by Daniel Kitson (with more than a passing reference to Alice's own show SAVAGE and INSIDE by Bo Burnham), we analyse narrative structure, transitions, set-ups and pay-offs used by stand-ups… But we end up focusing on exploring thematic tools - particularly the Aristotelean concepts of the rhetorical triangle: logos (how the story is told), ethos (who the storyteller is), and pathos (how the audience emotionally engages). With these powers combined, storytellers of all kinds can produce work of thematic power and resonance. Or just funny. And in backmatter, we discuss adapting Savage for the recorded stage with Alice! Enjoy! Spoilers abound. Audio excerpts used for educational purposes. This week, host Jesse David Fox decides to give the people what they want: some Bo Burnham's Inside content! BUT Bo isn't doing any interviews, so an episode of Jesse's Patreon podcast, The Specials, will have to suffice. The Specials is a podcast devoted to the fine and noble art of stand-up comedy, hosted by journalist and comedy expert Jesse David Fox (Vulture, Good One); writer and critic Kathryn VanArendonk (Vulture); and producer/comedy fan Jessamine Molli. Every episode, Jesse, Kathryn, and Jessamine dissect, rate, and review a stand-up special. It could be a classic like Dave Chappelle's Killing Them Softly or a newer special like Maria Bamford's Old Baby. We could also review something bad...for a price. Whatever we review, you'll hear the three of us do a deep dive into the cultural and artistic significance of the comedian in question and his or her work.
