To wrap up our episode cycle featuring "Off-Beat Musicals", Madeline, Julian and Emilio close in on a prolific songwriter whose career has notably dovetailed with film over the years: Paul Williams.  An unconventional public figure with the gift of gab and an ear for making timeless music, Williams left his mark on the 1970s, penning memorable scores for some truly unique movie musicals.  First, we cover 'Phantom of the Paradise', Brian De Palma's 1974 rock musical featuring Williams in a lead role, the nefarious music producer Swan whose deal with the devil sets the stage for a WILD mix of camp, vengeance, and glam rock swagger.  Then there's 'Bugsy Malone', Alan Parker's 1976 gangster film satire with a cast of nothing but children, yet another wild ride of fun performances and some era-specific songs.  And we wrap up the conversation with a look at 'The Muppet Movie' from 1979, one last off-beat musical featuring puppets with a witty script and several equally clever heartfelt tunes from Williams and collaborater Kenneth Ascher.  It's an earnest look back on the work of one of the more influential songsmiths of his era, with an off-beat musical performance of our own just for kicks!     We have a monthly newsletter!  Subscribe at sleeplesscinematicpod.substack.comIf you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice. In this episode of the XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar is joined by Robert Arkins, best known to millions as Jimmy Rabbitte in Alan Parker's classic 1991 film The Commitments. Robert looks back on life before the film, his musical roots, fronting his own band Housebroken, and how his sister first introduced him to Roddy Doyle's book. He reflects on why he initially saw The Commitments as a possible distraction from his music, before becoming the face and voice of one of the most beloved music films ever made. In this warm and honest conversation, Robert talks about working with Alan Parker, finding Jimmy Rabbitte's natural Dublin rhythm, the humour and energy that still make the film resonate, and the moment he realised The Commitments had become much bigger than just a film. He also shares brilliant behind-the-scenes stories from the shoot, including Van Morrison auditioning for Joey "The Lips," memories of the famous bath scene, Johnny Murphy's motorbike mishap, and what fans still say to him more than three decades later. The conversation also goes deeper into what happened after The Commitments — the pressure of sudden fame, travelling to Los Angeles, signing to MCA, working on an unfinished Housebroken album, and the frustration of being recognised as Jimmy Rabbitte when he wanted to be seen as an artist in his own right. Now, Robert is returning to the music with Robert Arkins' Commitments, marking the 35th anniversary of The Commitments with UK and Ireland shows. He talks about bringing those songs back to the stage, adding Detroit and Northern Soul into the live set, and why the audience energy still reminds him of watching the film with a crowd. At its heart, this episode is about music, identity, second chances, and what happens when one role follows you for the rest of your life. Listen to the full episode now.

In which the Mister joins me in reviewing MISSISSIPPI BURNING (1988), with a screenplay by Chris Gerolmo, the film is directed by Alan Parker.  In 1964, two FBI agents with clashing philosophies—a by-the-book idealist and a cynical former Southern sheriff—are sent to a small Mississippi town to investigate the disappearance of three civil rights activists.  They find themselves stonewalled by a "conspiracy of silence" and violent hostility from the local authorities and the Ku Klux Klan, who go to extreme lengths to protect their secrets.  As racial tensions reach a breaking point, the agents are forced to reconcile their different methods to break the case and expose the deep-seated corruption within the community.  The film clocks in at 2 h 8 m, is rated R - we caught it on Prime Video but it's also playing on Fawesome, Plex, Pluto TV, Roku Channel, Tubi but it's also to buy/rent on Prime Video.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.#MississippiBurning #ChrisGerolmo #AlanParker #GeneHackman #Anderson #WillemDafoe #Ward #FrancesMcDormand #MrsPell #BradDourif #DeputyPell RLeeErmey #MayorTilman #GailardSartain #SheriffStuckey #StephenTobolowsky #Townley #MichaelRooker #FrankBailey #PruittTaylorVince ##Lester #KevinDunn #AgentBird #GeoffreyNauffts #Goatee #BasedOnMichaelSchwerner #RickZieff #Passenger #BasedOnAndrewGoodman #ChristopherWhite #BlackPassenger #BasedOnJamesChaney #DariusMcCrary #Aaron #LouWalker #Vertis #StanleyWCollins #Hollis #DanielWinford #Fennis #PeriodDrama #PoliticalThriller #PsychologicalThriller #SuspenseMystery #Thriller #Drama #Crime #Mystery #Tragedy  @PrimeVideo  @Fawesome @Plex  #PlutoTV  #RokuChannel  @Tubi  #FridayFamilyFilmNightOpening intro music: GOAT by Wayne Jones, courtesy of YouTube Audio Library

Today on part two of our conversation on the Rarified Heir Podcast, this episode continues our conversation with Peter Rafelson, son of director and producer Bob Rafelson. Recorded the week after part one, this episode delves into some pretty heavy as well as some pretty of the wall stuff. And as you have heard on part one, it seems like that was par for the course in the Rafelson household in the 1960s and 1970s. As one of the leading figures in the American New Wave filmmakers, Bob Rafelson was responsible for producing or directing some classic, seminal films that influenced generations of film makers. It's quite a resume including films like The Postman Always Rings Twice, Head, The Last Picture Show, Easy Rider, The King of Marvin Gardens, Mountains of the Moon, a film we discuss at length, Stay Hungry as well as an unfortunately named anthology, Porn.com. Beginning with Davy Jones, we also discuss what each member of The Monkees was like off camera, how he spent the Summer of 1975 pumping iron with Arnold Schwarzenegger in Alabama, his role in the Alan Parker movie Fame, how the magazine Psychology Today saved his bacon growing up as a kid and everything in between. We discuss dyslexia, smoking pot with your teachers, trade school, working with his dad scoring a film and much more. So get ready for part two of our conversation with guest Peter Rafelson and learn what it was like having The Monkees instruments in his basement for years after the show ended its run. It's up next on part two of our conversation with the son of an Easy Rider or a Raging Bull. We're just not sure which one it was. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

Set in New Orleans in 1955, the film is a Faustian tale about the disappearance of a singer named Johnny Favorite, giving us the chance to consider the occult origins of the modern music industry at length. A Satanic film about Satanic pacts, Angel Heart is filled with revelation of the method designed to disorient and destabilize its audience and contains abundant subtext about how the MK-entertainment industry creates IMSAs (Illuminati Mind Slave Artists). Matthew Modine "is one of the best, most adaptable film actors of his generation," says The New York Times. Modine's iconic portrayals in films such as Alan Parker's BIRDY, Louden Swain in VISION QUEST, Stanley Kubrick's FULL METAL JACKET, and Dr. Martin “Papa” Brenner in Netflix's global phenomenon STRANGER THINGS have cemented his legacy in the entertainment industry. Modine recently starred in the Netflix political thriller series "Zero Day," where he plays the Speaker of the House. If you watch this Cybercrime Magazine video interview with Modine, then you might also call him an expert on the good, the bad, and the ugly that artificial intelligence (AI) brings to society. Our host Sam White dives deep into AI, the Internet, cybercrime, privacy, surveillance, and a whole lot more with Modine. Modine draws parallels between George Orwell's “1984”, the famous dystopian novel and cautionary tale, and what we are living through now in the age of AI. Despite his concerns around AI, Modine touts the benefits of it, namely its potential for sharing medical information during epidemics, helping to feed starving people around the globe, and more. If AI could play a role in taking down the U.S. power grid, then Modine helps us imagine what that might be like. Modine gets personal with Cybercrime Magazine and shares his love for New York City, his experience working with Robert De Niro, and a deepfake song involving George Michael and Wham!

Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

All November we gotta RAISE THE CURTAIN & BELT THE CHORUS! It's musical films all month long and today's discussion got a lot of news and attention during its production back in 1996. MTV, still in the music video game back then, helped push this beloved Tim Rice & Andrew Lloyd Webber project because its star is none other the the iconic pop diva, Madonna. Stage purists of “EVITA” always have Patti Lupone's vibrant renditions in their heart but for the film adaptation by Alan Parker in 1996, Madonna really wanted the role and felt a connection to the beloved First Lady of Argentina. Webber even wrote a new song for the film that helped define a point in Madonna's career. The press helped make EVITA a hit, but how does it hold up amongst the great musical adaptations when we look back? I'll just say that Antonio Banderas looked like Orson Welles opposite Madonna who had her moments but lacked a lot of expression. Also, are the Argentines annoyed that Jonathan Pryce (a Brit) played Juan Peron since that whole Falklands thing went down? This really made us want to get some South American history books at least. This is Bob's first exposure to the Andrew Lloyd Webber style. It's a lot to take in for a man who has only seen six musicals up to this point. We will see how “EVITA” fares all these years later.
