In this episode of The Corner of Story and Game, we dig into the gentle rhythm and thoughtful design of idle games with indie game developer Ayla Derrick. As the founder of Cave Bear Games, a studio built entirely by junior developers, Ayla brings a fresh and inclusive perspective to the gaming landscape. We explore Plantasia, Cave Bear's debut title, a cozy solarpunk idle game that blends environmental restoration with low-pressure gameplay. Ayla shares insights into designing games for accessibility, creating spaces that appeal to underrepresented audiences (including “games for girls”), and what it means to build a development culture grounded in learning and collaboration.Whether you're a narrative designer, a curious gamer, or an aspiring indie dev, this episode offers valuable thoughts on how storytelling, mechanics, and mission-driven development intersect in today's evolving game industry.

Send us a textEpisode 487"Baywatch"Actor: Nicole EggertNicole joins me to talk about her life, career, battling cancer, the paparazzi being relentless after chemotherapy and so much more. Nicole Eggert launched her full-fledged acting career soon after appearing in some TV commercials. She began her acting career in 1979, where she portrayed the character of ‘Mary Beth Denton' in a television film titled ‘When Hell was in Session.' After appearing in a made-for-TV movie titled ‘When She Was Bad…' in the same year, she made her feature film debut in 1980. She was cast opposite Jacqueline Bisset and Candice Bergen, for playing the role of ‘Debby Blake,' the young daughter of Bergen's character in her debut movie ‘Rich and Famous.' In the same year, she lent her voice for Dennis's sworn adversary, the snotty Margaret Wade in ‘Dennis the Menace in Mayday for Mother.' It was the first animated adaptation in the Dennis the Menace trilogy.During the early and mid-1980s, Nicole appeared in a number of television shows and some major films including her twin television shows in 1981 viz., ‘Today's F.B.I' and ‘Fantasy Island,' ‘The Clan of the Cave Bear' and ‘I Dream of Jeannie... Fifteen Years Later'. In 1982, she landed a prime role in a recurring capacity as William Shatner's daughter on the police drama ‘T.J.Hooker.' She successfully bagged another recurring role in the popular situational comedy series ‘Who's the Boss?' She played the role of Marci Ferguson, a friend of the character Samantha Micelli, which was portrayed by Alyssa Milano. She appeared in the show in the episodes released during 1985-1986.In 1987, Nicole Eggert hogged the limelight and rose to prominence attracting her first ever true national stardom, when she starred on the sitcom ‘Charles in Charge' as Jamie Powell. On June 25, 1989, she along with Richard William Wheaton III hosted the second annual Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. She was seen in the television series ‘The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!' in a guest appearance in the same year. She appeared in the TV movie adaptation of Danielle Steel's Secrets portraying the character of Alexa Adams in 1992. Nicole Eggert completely metamorphosed her image from a captivating child artist to a bombshell sex symbol, when she appeared as ‘Summer Quinn,' one of the many lifeguards on season 3 and 4, in the renowned syndicated series, a world famous beach drama ‘Baywatch.' She had to get a breast implant, sign a contract agreeing not to gain any weight and had to pass a swim test to grab the role. Though she was supposed to return on the spin-offs of the beach action drama, she only returned for the reunion movie ‘Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding' (2003).Nicole Eggert along with celebrity actress like Yasmine Bleeth, Pamela Anderson, and Carmen Electra formed the group of ‘Baywatch Girls' and became the celebrity crush of the world after their appearance in the highly popular syndicated series. THE BRIGHT SWORD by LEV GROSSMAN THE CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR by JEAN M. AUEL Du nuh nuh, nuh nuhhh (to the theme song of A Charlie Brown Christmas) Page-O's! It's our last review-centric episode, and boy howdy do we have some good ones. First Toby unsheathes his reviewing rapier to tackle Lev Grossman's new Arthurian epic The Bright Sword, then Bailey rakes her critical claws across the prehistoric potboiler (not really but I'm having fun here) The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel. All this plus a time-centric game from Andrew, a pod poll on the new Sally Rooney, and an air of ending and vague sadness that's perfect for fall! Tell people your tears are cold wind related!

This story serves as an inspiring example for all independent studios considering their funding options in 2024, reminding us that collective willpower and fearlessness can be as powerful as more seniority and money. In this episode of Rise and Play, guest host Shelby Moledina returns. Shelby is a Game Director and Film Director with 30+ titles shipped, and 20+ years of experience at large and small companies (WB Games, DeNA, Double Loop Games, and more). This week, she speaks with Ayla Derrick, the founder of Cave Bear Games, an all-volunteer studio that went unexpectedly viral earlier this year.Ayla, a newcomer to the game industry with a background in education, shares how and why she started Cave Bear Games in 2024, which has been a historically apocalyptic year in the games industry. Ayla discusses how she harnessed CBG's viral success to build the studio, and to spread the wealth far beyond CBG by creating a strong volunteer and junior game dev community. We cover essential topics such as the importance of trusting your instincts to find your own way to solve problems, networking with genuine passion, and fostering a positive studio culture. Ayla and Cave Bear's journey make it clear that there's real power in taking fate into your own hands.02:19 Starting an All-Volunteer Studio, for Junior Devs20:25 Growing the Team AND a Dev Community...at the Same Time33:04 Using a Newcomer's POV to Tackle Business Challenges in Novel Ways37:36 The Importance of Communication, Genuine Outreach, and Passion47:22 Like PB&J: ADHD and Game Development54:18 Final Thoughts and Future Plans
This week, we're joined by the wonderful Nghi Vo, whose The Brides of High Hill is out this week. It's the fifth of her ongoing “Singing Hills” sequence of novellas about the peripatetic Cleric Chih and their sharp-tongued companion hoopoe, Almost Brilliant. We discuss how Nghi has made use of different storytelling modes throughout the series, her novels The Chosen and the Beautiful and Siren Queen, a forthcoming novella (again alluding to the world of F. Scott Fitzgerald, and a very intriguing novel due in the fall, The City in Glass, which involves doing very interesting things with libraries. There are also, as usual, some totally irrelevant digressions involving everything from writing blurbs to The Clan of the Cave Bear.
Anson and Branan are still banging on about OUT OF DARKNESS and we are thrilled to have the film's director Andrew Cumming join us for a chat from the far-flung Shetland islands. Mentioned in this episode: Learning to be a caveman, William Golding's “The Inheritors”, “Quest for Fire”. “Clan of Cave Bear”, “Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind” by Yuval Noah Harari and shooting in remote locations during COVID in the harsh Scottish winter. WARNING: Spoilers within! If you have not seen the film we suggest seeing it now that it is streaming. #OutOfDarkness @SignatureEntUK https://youtu.be/U5xMX1OZr24

The wonderful filmmaker who helmed blockbusters like the Speed movies, Twister, Lara Croft 2 and The Haunting remake also previously lensed blockbuster movies for his mentor Paul Verhoeven (Katie Tippel, Turkish Delight, The 4th Man, Flesh + Blood, Basic Instinct) and recurring directors Michael Chapman (All the Right Moves, The Clan of the Cave Bear), Lewis Teague (Cujo, Jewel of the Nile) & John McTiernan (Hunt for Red October, Die Hard). He's also done one-offs as well for other blockbuster filmmakers including Ridley Scott's Black Rain, Joel Schumacher's Flatliners, James Foley's Who's That Girl? and Richard Donner's Lethal Weapon 3. Blake Heath & Nathaniel Muir from Adventures in Movies (part of the Cheer & Loathing podcast network group) help break down his moody visuals, his work with other cinematographers, his previous interviews and other unique things about this diverse international legend who briefly had his moment in the Hollywood sun! Each season we like to speak to someone from an independent bookstore, but this can be especially challenging during the December holiday shopping crush. We're very glad Amanda Zirn Hudson from Bethany Beach Books in Delaware was able to make time to speak with us. Bethany Beach Books started its own book subscription program several years ago called The Book Drop. Amanda tells us all about how she began the program and explains the process for selecting books and getting them out to members. Unlike other book subscriptions, this one is run by an independent bookstore, and the books they pick are what they consider “hidden gems.” Their program has been recommended by BuzzFeed, NPR, The New York Times, and USA Today. The good news is that you still have time to order a subscription for yourself or a book-loving friend or family member before the holidays! The base setting for the human species is sociability to some degree. Even the most misanthropic or introverted of us are not meant to be completely cut off from all other people. In narrative terms, however, isolation can be a great way to test your character. It can also provide interesting back story or provide a setting or frame for a survival story. So what sort of tests can you set for your MC? How can you use isolation to explore characterisation or setting? Find out in this week's episode. Under the microscope this week: Castaway, The Martian, The Clan of the Cave Bear and many more. Title music: Ecstasy by Smiling Cynic
The Five Count recently had a chance to speak with actor Thomas G. Waites. Thomas is best known for his role as "Fox" in the film The Warriors and "Windows" in the film The Thing. Tony is best known as the voice of "Gambit" on the TV show X-Men: The Animated Series and "X the Owl" on Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood. He's also provided voices for cartoons like Hello Kitty and Friends, Sailor Moon, and The Busy World of Richard Scarry. See Thomas & Tony Sept. 16-18 at the Crypticon Convention in Minnesota!

This encore episode is double the size than a typical Trek Untold because it's actually two shows in one! This is because I first interviewed Lycia Naff at the end of November 2020, and nearly a year later, we did it again since her journey in Star Trek had just resumed. Lycia Naff is known best to Star Trek fans for her two appearances in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" as Ensign Sonya Gomez from the second season episodes "Q Who" and "Samaritan Snare." Over 30 years later, Lycia returned to the franchise to reprise Sonya in "Lower Decks," only this time she was now a captain of her own ship, the USS Archimedes! Although Gomez was originally meant to be a love interest for Geordi LaForge, things didn't work out for Ensign Gomez after spilling her hot chocolate on Captain Picard. Lycia tells us the behind-the-scenes story about what happened to her character and what happened to the third episode she was meant to appear in that would have changed Geordi's character. Plus, memories of seeing the Borg in their debut appearance, working with the cast & crew, including having to spill hot liquids on Patrick Stewart, and why she believes Ensign Gomez never returned... until she miraculously did in the second season of LDS. In our second portion of the interview that took place a year after the first, Lycia discussed what got her out of retirement to take the role, what it was like reprising this fan-favorite character, and all the in's and out's of being on a Star Trek show again. You may also recognize Lycia from her role in "Total Recall" as the three-breasted mutant hooker on Mars! Lycia recalls working with Paul Verhoeven and Arnold Schwarzenegger in this iconic and memorable role, with some happy stories and one "explosive" tale. Lycia explains why she left acting and pursued journalism, leading to one of her biggest stories, when she broke the news about the Bill Cosby sexual assault allegations. We talk about the investigation, the fallout from this story, and how it changed the landscape of modern feminism. We also chat about her not-for-profit group, Drive-By Do-Gooders, and in this pair of interviews, we see what changed as COVID continued ravaging LA's homeless communities. Plus, horror stories of working with Debbie Allen on the "Fame" TV series, sharing the screen with Daryl Hannah in "Clan of The Cave Bear," her time in "Hunter" and "Lethal Weapon," riding motorcycles & killing the undead in the B-movie "Chopper Chicks in Zombietown" and a few other Hollywood tales. Visit https://www.drivebydogooders.org/ to donate to the cause, and if you donate $35 or more, Lycia will send you an autographed picture. In the comments section where you donate, include your name and address and what pic you would like, and Lycia will send it on your way! Note: This episode discusses sensitive topics, including sexual assault. It is uncensored, and the content may be disturbing to some. Discretion is advised. We are talking about the first 13 chapters of Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel which has not as many bears as you'd think. If you know about early humans please help because we are so confused, what are tear ducts for????--- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bookcult/support

Leah Carey is a Sex and Intimacy coach and host of the podcast “Good Girls Talk About Sex,” where she interviews people who grew up as little girls plus transgender women about their sex lives. As a coach, she works with people eager to explore new avenues of their sexuality and fulfill their greatest desires, like: learning to talk with current or future partners about sexual desires, diving back into the dating pool after a long time away, having first-time queer experiences, investigating consensual non-monogamy, or learning how to communicate about kink. I was thrilled that Leah joined me to talk about Kate Stayman-London's “One To Watch,” a whip-smart rom-com that I immediately pressed on all of my girlfriends to read. ** Content warnings: sex and sexuality, brief mention of suicide.** Follow the Best Book Ever Podcast on Instagram or on the Best Book Ever Website Do you have a book you want to tell me about? The Writ Wit: A Podcast About Writing and the Creative Process
In this episode, the two Matts tell a tale of two writers at vastly different scales, have a record number of swears in the introduction that get beeped out, come up with a new name for the famous coffee shop that shall not be named for legal reasons, and talk about writing out your characters by NOT completing their arcs in the next of our set about how to write out your characters from your story. Why in the world would a writer want to leave a character's arc unfinished? How much of an explanation do you need for a character's sudden absence? Are there instances with the writer just forgot about the character? Will Matt David ever learn to not shout "I TOLD YOU SO!" while holding up a bright neon sign saying that he told you so? We discuss it all, while hoping the arc of this podcast's existence doesn't go unfinished, and talk about Ice Age, A Goofy Movie, Friends, and Clan of the Cave Bear. What an odd collection of pop culture works this week... Have any feedback or questions for our hosts? Email us at mattd@matthewdonaldcreator.com.
