Dave and Jeremy encounter the sublime, the ridiculous, and the achingly mundane as they unravel the interwoven passions of Millie, Pinky, and Willie, whose destinies tangle in Robert Altman's 3 WOMEN, a curious and beguiling exploration of shifting identities and wayside desperation. Will Altman pull off a K-Mart-coded mashup of Ingmar Bergman and Sam Shepard? Did Olive Oyl and Stephen King's Carrie once room together in an alternate timeline? Can a director really shoot half of a mid-career art film through a Lava Wave Motion Machine™  and then go on to make GOSFORD PARK? Join Dave and Jeremy as they wade through the shallows and plunge into the deep end with the titular trio of Shelley Duvall, Sissy Spacek, and Janice Rule. Born on December 28, 1934, in Ilford Essex, England, despite never having gone to the theater and being considered "too common" to be onstage, Smith grew up with a love for Shakespeare and was encouraged to act by her English teacher. In 1952, at 17 years old, her career began as Viola in Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night.” Smith received international fame for her role as Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey (2010–2015) and is known for films including Othello (1965), The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969), Travels with My Aunt (1972), California Suite (1978) A Room with a View (1985), Gosford Park (2001), the Harry Potter film series (2001–2011), Death on the Nile (1978), Hook (1991), Sister Act (1992), The Secret Garden (1993), The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012), Quartet (2012) The Lady in the Van (2015) and more. Join Carl and  British country house historian Curt DiCamillo for a look into the world of the Edwardian country house.  Audiences became fascinated in these houses through the blockbuster Julian Fellowes series "Downton Abbey" and his earlier film "Gosford Park",  with their colliding worlds of upstairs and downstairs and interlocking social dramas. Curt discusses this fascinating period in British history and how the country house in Edwardian times brought society closer to a modern age. Curt explains how country houses as estates for the British aristocracy evolved over centuries and how they reached their height in the reign of King Edward VII, who took the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Victoria. The country house greatly expanded during this time and some interiors reflected influences from Britain's growing empire.  Grand dinners, shooting parties, and elegant tea parties were all backdrops to great social intrigue and sometimes scandal.  In this show, Curt shares several examples of great Edwardian country houses (including one current royal estate), what they looked like, how they operated, and how they can be visited today.  The Edwardian period was a glittering one, much like America's Gilded Age, but a short one, which vanished from view as Britain and Western Europe entered a world-changing war.  Related show with Curt DiCamillo:  The British Crown Jewels: History and Mystery

In our buildup to discussing Homi Adajania's "Murder Mubarak" on Monday (March 18, 2024), we -- Dhruv, Amartya & Varun -- discuss two similarly high-profile Hollywood whodunnits that have influenced Rian Johnson's "Knives Out" movies, which have subsequently become the template for any modern-day whodunnit mysteries. The rules of these game narratives may vary: if Herbert Ross' "The Last of Sheila" emphasizes its cynically overconstructed mystery mechanics, Robert Altman's "Gosford Park" undermines it. But they both use (or underuse) them to expose the rules (or lack thereof) of their respective wealthy societies in a way that goes beyond the fun mocking of the "Knives Out" films: the revelations elicit discomforting laughter that no amount of silliness can underplay. Do listen to the full spoiler-filled episode to hear us talk about both these films! Lord Fellowes is a Vice President of the RNIB as well as President of the RNIB's Talking Books Library. He was delighted to record the poem, which is a festive favourite of his. He is passionate about ensuring literature is accessible to all visually impaired children living across the UK.  RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey caught up with Julian just after he had recorded the reading of the poem The Night Before Christmas to find out why he first started supporting the work of the RNIB and what it means to him being a Vice President of the RNIB and President of the RNIB Talking Books Library.   Toby began by asking Julian when he first came across the poem The Night Before Christmas, whether the poem was a favourite of the Fellowes family and one that he remembered hearing or reading as a child.   Julian then gave Toby an insight into some of the Fellowes family Christmas traditions, before talking about writing for both film and television and answering that question we all might have as to whether we will see the Crawley family again on the small or big screen. Lord Fellowes' reading of The Night Before Christmas is now available on DAISY CD and USB sticks from RNIB's Talking Books Library or as a download through the RNIB's Reading Services website - https://readingservices.rnib.org.uk (Please note that you must be a member of the RNIB's Talking Books Library and RNIB's Reading Services to access the recording of the reading.) 1992 was a great year, look no further than WrestleMania VIII and the crowning of the Macho Man Randy Savage as WWF Champion as evidence of that. But it was also a great year for movies, and Brad Garoon & Jake Ziegler are ready to fill in a few glaring gaps in their 1992 canons. Brad has Jake watch Robert Altman's the Player, a movie he'd been meaning to see forever. They talk about this slick noir and sendup of the Hollywood system, starring Tim Robbins, Vincent D'Onofrio, Fred Ward, Whoopie Goldberg, and Greta Scacchi. They wrestle with Altman's directorial style and marvel and the height of some of the actors in this film. Jake assigns Brad A Few Good Men, a movie that Brad, like most of the world, had seen one scene of. They talk about the surprising Oscar snubs for director Rob Reiner and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, and the terrific performances by Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, Kevin Pollack, Jack Nicholson, and Wolfgang Bodison. Jake makes the case for Kevin Bacon being historically underrated, and Brad makes the case for the point that Sorkin dialogue became unbearable. Coming to you with some really sad news today. RIP Michael Gambon AKA Dumbledore. Earlier on I read that Michael Gambon, who famously played Albus Dumbledore for the majority of the Harry Potter films, has passed away at the age of 82. “We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon,” said the statement issued on behalf of his wife, Anne, and son Fergus by publicist Clair Dobbs. It added that he “died peacefully in hospital” after a bout of pneumonia with the pair at his bedside. His family also added: … “We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love,”  … For those unaware, Gambon took over the role of Dumbledore after the death of Richard Harris, who portrayed the wise old wizard in the Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets. And take over the role he certainly did- and while the two men may have portrayed Dumbledore in their own unique ways, both were incredibly effective. Leaving their mark on the Harry Potter franchise for all of eternity. Born on October 19, 1940, in Dublin, Ireland, Michael Gambon showed an early inclination towards the arts. He left school at the age of 15 and went on to become a successful engineer. However, the allure of the theater proved irresistible, and Gambon soon embarked on a professional acting career. He joined the prestigious National Theatre in London's Old Vic as one of its founding members in 1962. Collaborating with legendary figures like Laurence Olivier, Derek Jacobi, and Maggie Smith, Gambon developed his craft and gained prominence on the stage. Throughout his illustrious career, Gambon amassed numerous awards and honors. He received three Olivier Awards and two Critics' Circle Theatre Awards for his remarkable stage performances. On the screen, Gambon was honored with four British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards. Additionally, he won two ensemble cast Screen Actors Guild Awards for his roles in "Gosford Park" and "The King's Speech." In 1998, Gambon was knighted for his immense contributions to the world of drama. But it wasn't just contributions to the world of Drama that Gambon deserved to be knighted for. I think I can speak for everyone when I say that Gambon played an integral part of so many people's childhoods- bringing the iconic role of Dumbledore to life. It's tough getting older and seeing our childhood heroes passing away, but just like Hagrid and Robbie Coltrane- Gambon's contributions to the world of theatre will live forever. But to attend the film market.” 23:09 - Joe explains the role of a distributor at film festivals. 25:45 - Christian asks what an independent filmmaker should do to maximize the film festivals, they unpack some very blunt, straight-forward steps. 29:47 - Joe makes the following profound statement “if you're looking to sell your movie, looking to raise money, make revenue to pay back investors, then these film festivals aren't going to do anything for you. BUT being at a film MARKET, walking around and trying to sell your film, to countries all over the world, and being a part of the industry, is where you need to be to be a part of the film industry” 32:48 - Joe reiterates his encouragement to young filmmakers and producers that help is available. 34:36- Joe warns NOT to be clueless about the industry you are in. You have to read the trades. You have to subscribe to Variety, Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, and Indie Wire, even if it costs you $200 a year. It is well worth it. You have to stay up with the trades. If you don't, you're going to get lost. It's really an ongoing education. Things are changing in the business almost every day. Part 2 of this 2-part series will be released later this month. NOTE - NO DocuView DejaVu this episode

Who's That Girl? A New Girl Podcast

This podcast covers New Girl Season 3, Episode 22, Dance, which originally aired on April 29, 2014 and was directed by Trent O'Donnell and written by Rebecca Addelman and Ryan Koh. Here's a quick recap of the episode:Jess is throwing a school dance where the theme is Love is Forever and Ever and Ever (with 12 total Evers) so when the dance is sabotaged, the loft comes together to fill in the gaps and support Jess.We discuss Pop Culture References such as:Flo-Jo - When Schmidt went outside to race the bully, he said, “I'm like a Hebrew cheetah, on the count of three. One, two... Flo Jo!” Gosford Park - When the dance was being sabotaged, Jess shared that all the doors should be locked to keep everyone in like it was Gosford Park.Additional Pop Culture References such as:Good Will Hunting -  When making jokes about Buster's age, Schmidt said Buster would have been 7 when Good Will Hunting came out. Good Will Hunting is a 1997 American psychological drama film directed by Gus Van Sant, and written by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. The film received nominations in nine categories at the Academy Awards and won in two: Best Supporting Actor for Robin Williams and Best Original Screenplay for Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. The film was met with highly positive reviews and in 2014, it was ranked at number 53 in The Hollywood Reporter's "100 Favorite Films" list.“Call Me Maybe” - Carly Rae Jepsen - This song played when Winston was having trouble turning down the “heat” on the dance floor. "Call Me Maybe" is a song recorded by Canadian singer-songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen for her EP Curiosity and later appeared on her second studio album and first international album Kiss. "Call Me Maybe" was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 2012 – Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. The song was the best-selling single worldwide, selling over 12 million copies in that year alone.Ray Charles - Coach said the three guys were the worst chaperones, noting that Ray Charles' ghost would be better. Ray Charles Robinson Sr. was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, and alto saxophonist who is regarded as one of the most iconic and influential singers in history. Charles was blinded during childhood, possibly due to glaucoma and when Coach is saying Ray Charles' ghost would be a better chaperone, even though he was blind.8 Mile - When having a rap battle at the end of the episode, Schmidt says it's like 8 Mile. 8 Mile is a 2002 American musical drama film that contains autobiographical elements from Eminem's life. The story follows white rapper Jimmy Smith Jr. aka B-Rabbit and his attempt to launch a career in hip hop, a music genre dominated by African-Americans. The title is derived from 8 Mile Road, the highway between the predominantly African-American city of Detroit and the largely white suburban communities to the north that Eminem originally lived in.  On this episode's Most Likely To we discuss who is more likely to challenge a little kid to a foot race, sabotage an event, accidentally hurt their friend while trying to bond or hug, and race in a shopping cart. We also cover what Schmidt thinks “makes a man” in our “Schmidtism”. For “Not in the 2020s” we mention Nick calling Cece a “stupid girl” and the kid calling Schmidt a “flamer”. In our “Yes in the 2020s” we highlight Jess and Cece's conversation with Wendy where they talk to her but don't punish her. We also give a brief look into Mary-Charles Jones (Wendy) and Mason Cook (Tommy), the guest stars of this episode. Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: Angela Kinsey (Rose - Previously Discussed in S3E2), Brian Posehn (Biology Teacher - Previously Discussed in S3E11), Samuel Gilbert (Young Schmidt - Previously Discussed in S3E6), Clint Culp (Gary the Janitor), Isaac White (Felipe), Josie Totah (Todd), Cody Benjamin Lee (Oscar), Zoé Hendrix (Winston's Girl), Seaonna Chanadet (Winston's Girl), and Jacqueline Jones (Student). In this episode we also discuss some of the callbacks from earlier seasons like how Jess couldn't say penis in Season 1 and how the men chant “Men!” like they did in this season's Thanksgiving episode. Neither of us found the bear this episode. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:City of big shoulders and dreams - When Nick is trying to entertain the kids he asks “who is from Chicago, the city of big shoulders and dreams.” The reference is from a 1916 poem by Carl Sandburg where he mentions the hard-working tradesmen and physical laborers who made the city the industrial center of the region.Munchausen syndrome - In this episode, one of the teachers mentions that she has never volunteered to chaperone a school dance because of her Munchausen syndrome. Munchausen's syndrome is a rare condition where a person fabricates or induces symptoms of illness in themselves. This is different from hypochondria as people with Munchausen syndrome actually manipulate results rather than just believe they are ill. This episode got a 7/10 rating from both Kritika and Kelly; Kritika's favorite character was Coach and Kelly's favorite was Cece. Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 23!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/
