In part 2, Amit and Jeff tackle probe positioning, needle trajectory and something called Pawa's Pleural Groan...Why is the PVB poised to have a renaissance? Should we block one level? Every level? What's the risk of pneumothorax and should this block be done in anti coagulated patients? (spoiler: 2 out of 2 hosts say YES!) Join us for all this and more as we round out this in-depth discussion into one of our FAVE block techniques. Oh, and jokes. Always the jokes. Dr. Laura talks with Dr. Bal Pawa about her book, “The Mind-Body Cure”, and her journey through the health field into her focus on integrative medicine. Dr. Pawa shares her story of being a physician and a patient on the same day after a car accident, and how that opened her eyes to an entirely new experience and perspective on medicine. Dr. Pawa discusses the science and medical background that informs her book but stresses that she made it very digestible to anyone without that background. She talks about personal healing and learning to regulate our own nervous systems, a preventative model of medicine that she says is missing from our current healthcare system. Dr. Pawa teaches Dr. Laura a breathing exercise from her book, one that helps improve oxygen saturation in the lungs and calm the nervous system. Dr. Pawa's knowledge and experience inform her message about the impacts of chronic stress and the importance of the mind-body connection. She shares her insight with as many people as possible in order to change lives.“If 75% of our physical symptoms are attributed to chronic stress and anxiety - because of the hormones I talked about, cortisol and adrenaline - and if that's the case and the other 25% are viral, infectious, injury, well, then it behooves us to make sure we pay attention to what causes stress hormones.” Dr. Bal PawaAbout Bal Pawa:Dr. Pawa has 30-plus years in the health field as a physician with a focus on Integrative Medicine and Women's Health. She obtained certification in Mind-Body Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She is also a Certified Menopause Clinician and has completed additional studies on Functional Medicine: Neuroplasticity, Gut, Brain, and Autoimmune disease. Bal is a passionate advocate for bringing evidence-based medicine to the masses and empowering them with knowledge. She has been an invited speaker on radio, television, community events, and presented health lectures to corporations across Canada, the USA, and the UK. Her TEDx talk about the role of stress and anxiety on your health has nearly 1 million views. Dr. Pawa's, international best-selling book The Mind-Body Cure provides tools for self-care, as people struggle to reclaim their health. In this episode, we've collaborated with Logan February and turned their essay into an audio short story. We first heard the Nigerian non-binary poet and songwriter Logan February read this essay during AfroQueer's online festival in 2020. It's a beautiful, intriguing and very personal piece of writing that explores one of their queer experiences in Nigeria. And explores the experience of being ghosted. This excerpt is called My Ghost, adapted from their work - THE MANIA OF QUEER DESIRE: IN PRAISE OF FEVER RAY'S PLUNGE - and it's read by Kenzy Nna-Udosen. The music in this episode is Fever Ray's album Plunge. This episode was produced by Penny Dale and Selly Thiam. Written by Penny Dale and narrated by Kenny Nna-Udoosen. Sound editing by Mercy Barno and Tevin Sudi. AfroQueer is executive produced by Selly Thiam and is a production of AQ Studios. Our theme song is Pawa by Maia and the big sky. In this episode, we feature a feed drop trade with a podcast we really love, S***hole Country, an audio memoir set in Ghana during the 2017 holiday season. It's produced Radiotopia presents, a podcast feed debuting limited-run, artist-owned series from new and original voices. The narrator Afia, a middle-aged woman living in California, has spent the past few weeks visiting her family in Ghana. She's wrestling with a major life decision: should she leave America and accept her parents' offer of a home in Accra? Something big is keeping her from saying yes. And in this episode, she finally shares what it is. You can listen to S***hole Country episodes in podcast directories or at radiotopiapresents.fm and follow @radiotopia on all social media platforms to discover more shows from their network. S***hole Country is written, narrated, and sound designed by Afia Kaakyire, and produced by Afia and Mark Pagán. Julie Shapiro and Audrey Mardavich are executive producers. Cover art by Sindiso Nyoni, and the theme song, “Home,” is by Ria Boss. In 2019, a young lesbian singer-songwriter from Uganda was struggling financially after breaking up with her partner of 6 years. With a child to support, Shivanah was desperate to make ends meet. And so when a former backup dancer told her that an agent could get her work performing in a club in Dubai, she jumped at the chance. This is truly a story of survival. A warning: in some parts, the details are graphic and troubling. Thank you to Shivanah for sharing her story and music, Sophie Otiende for the role played by her and everyone at Azadi in helping Shivanah escape the traffickers and reintegrate into society. Azadi is a survivor-led organization that offers long-term support and capacity development to survivors of human trafficking. To learn more about the Azadi, click here. In this episode, physician and author Dr. Bal Pawa is the author of the bestseller, The Mind-Body Cure - how we heal our pain, anxiety, and fatigue by controlling chronic stress. Dr. Pawa describes that when we learn to name, tame and reframe the thoughts in our minds, we gain agency over much of our mental and physical health.
The emotional demand of stress can build up over time and if stressors are always present and you constantly feel under attack, that means your fight or flight reaction stays switched on. The long term activation of that stress response and the overexposure to cortisol and other stress hormones that follows can disrupt almost ALL of our body processes leading to symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, problems sleeping, depression, anxiety, digestive issues, memory or cognitive impairment, cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases and so much more. But life doesn’t have to be like this and this episode's guest, Dr. Bal Pawa, an MD and Harvard trained mind-body health expert and author of the best selling book The Mind Body Cure, will share ways for us to shift away from chronic stress and into restful and more resilient states. Listen to my interview with Elmer Omar Bascos Pizo, currently residing in Hawai‘i, an amazing poet with raw insight and stories. I had the chance to meet him out in San Francisco in October at the 5th Annual Filipino American International Book Festival where I learned of his work and found out that we also share some interesting parallels and intersections. Listen to him read and discuss his poems from his debut full-length poetry collection, "Leaving Our Shadows Behind Us" published by Bamboo Ridge Press in 2019. http://yourartsygirlpodcast.com/episodes Me & Elmer at the 5th Annual Filipino American International Book Festival in San Francisco, October 2019, organized by PAWA, Inc. & San Francisco Public Library. You can order his book here at: Bamboo Ridge Press -------------------------------------------------- SIBULAN Negros Oriental, Philippines At the mouth of the sea where the Ocoy River ends, brown bodies of naked boys pop in and out of the swirling water, like fish gasping for air. Foaming soapsuds stained with dirt from clothing women scrub on the river banks dissolve in the green water, like this half spoonful of sugar I just dropped into my cup of tea. AFTER THE LOVE-MAKING Be honest, you insist, catching your breath. I want you to describe how I made love to you. Do you really care? I ask. You nod. All right then, I say, swiping my wet lips with my tongue. You're a half-ripe tangerine, somewhat sweet, a bit sour, even after dipped in salt. BIO: Elmer Omar Bascos Pizo is an emerging voice in local literature, who translates his feelings into his poetry, reinterpreting his life experiences and working diligently to maintain authenticity. His poems are uniquely provocative, often sad in depicting his journey from an abusive childhood in the Philippines, through the trials of an overseas Filipino worker enduring and witnessing injustice and torture in the Middle East, to the challenges of a hard-working immigrant in 21st-century Hawai‘i. This is an important collection that offers a glimpse into a life of laboring to survive. Sometimes self-deprecating and occasionally humorous, Pizo’s distinctive poetry affirms the redemption found in the small sparks of humanity.
