Katie is an actor and writer who has graduated from Goldsmiths University and East 15 Drama School. Her credits include:Film:Burlesque FilmsAnimal CharmTV:The CutTheatre:Caviar and Chips - Soho Theatre and TourTwo's Tales - King's Head TheatreUncle Vanya - Theatre NomadHamlet, The Seagull and The Odyssey - Factory Theatre Company As both an actor and writer she has also appeared in her own one woman show “Fox”, written in 2018, first performed at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2019, followed by a UK Tour. Including a recent run at the Park Theatre in Islington this past December, directed by Lisa Cagnacci. Katie and I discuss her play, the writing process, getting the show up and running, and the rewards and challenges of its subject, motherhood. The play follows a mother called “MUM”, she's just given birth to her first child and finds herself increasingly anxious, as a result of being isolated in her flat all day caring for her newborn while her husband is at work. On top of this, a mysterious homeless man is perched on the other side of the wall of her flat. While he offers no threat to the mother and child, his presence is nevertheless unsettling, and the mother would like to know more about why and how he got there. This play is about the side of being a parent that many wouldn't know about, it removes the rose tinted glasses and shows you what its really like. In addition, how important it is to ask for help if you're struggling and how you don't have to do it on your own. The Strange Brew - artist stories behind the greatest music ever recorded
Ric Sanders, the fiddle player who has been an integral part of Fairport Convention for 40 years, takes us on a journey through his extraordinary musical life. From his early days discovering electric violin, to his simultaneous membership in both Soft Machine and the Albion Band, Sanders’ career reads like a who’s who of British jazz-fusion and folk-rock. Speaking with characteristic warmth, Sanders discusses the upcoming Fairport Spring 2026 UK Tour and provides insights into life on the road. Beyond Fairport, Sanders reveals the rich tapestry of collaborations that have shaped his musical journey: moments following Indian violin legend L. Shankar on stage, late-night jam sessions with Nigel Kennedy in Malvern pubs, and the influence of Ashley Hutchings. He also discusses his ongoing projects, from the Ric Sanders Trio to his recent work with Rosalie Cunningham. While Ric considers himself “a very lucky little fellow” it’s clear that luck has been matched by extraordinary talent and a passion for making music. Send us a textThis week on the podcast, I sit down with Dexy and Chris to discuss their latest release, their musical journey and more. ****Dark dreampop duo Magic Wands will release a new album entitled Cascades via Metropolis Records. It includes their current single, "Time To Dream,"as well as the previously issued "Hide," "Armour," "Moonshadow," and "Across The Water." “Cascades was born from a fascination with how the past lingers inside us and explores transformation and the spaces where timelines blur into one,” the band explains. Shaped by the spirit of centuries-old poetry, gothic romance, and myth, the album pulses with post-punk and dream-pop sounds, shot through with lingering shadows of the old world, bridging the sound of their 2012 debut album Aloha Moon with more recent releases. Formed in 2008 in Nashville by vocalists/guitarists Dexy and Chris Valentine but now based in Los Angeles, Magic Wands are known for a shimmering, dreamy sound that melds elements of shoegaze, dreampop, postpunk, and goth. Their music utilzes heavily-textured guitars, synth drones, and ethereal vocals to conjure an otherworldly atmosphere, plus song lyrics that are emotionally engaging. The duo has built a loyal fanbase over the course of five studio albums to date, the most recent of which was Switch (2023). Songs from it were subsequently remixed by guest artists and released as Switched later that same year.Magic Wands is a partnership built on alchemy of dark dreampop, goth-tinged postpunk, and a touch of cosmic romance. Shaped by the duo's signature cinematic atmosphere and celestial hooks, they hint at an album that explores transformation, reflection, and the pull of distant horizons. Magic Wands make music like portals, each record a doorway into a different century, a different sky. Over a decade since Aloha Moon, their magic is only growing stronger.*****If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comFollow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. Even the most disciplined podcasters in the world are susceptible to the occasional whoopsie. So it is with this episode which, owing to circumstances outside but mostly inside the beans' control, contains no listener topic suggestion but does contain a discourse on donkey milk soap which probably would have come up from the bean machine soon enough anyway to be fair. With thanks to our editor Laura Grimshaw.Tickets for our UK TOUR available here: https://littlewander.co.uk/tours/three-bean-salad-podcast/Merch now available here: www.threebeansaladshop.comGet in touch: threebeansaladpod@gmail.com @beansaladpod
It's a lukewarm take on the Antarctic this week owing to the actions of Mark from near Colliers Wood. We all know that the Antarctic holds strong appeal for scientists who either A) can't work out how else to avoid a conventional domestic life or B) are waiting out the clock on a statute of limitations in their home nation. But what on Earth is in it for the penguins? What have they got to prove? And do their feet ever stick to the ice when they have a waddle-pause? Answers on a postcard please and in the meantime enjoy what we assume is a world first: a podcast episode recorded by people actually physically in the same room.
Lee of the Black Country wants the beans discuss Sunday roasts this week, presumably because he's not allowed to have one himself this weekend. But why not? Was he rude to a policeman? Did he throw a wobbly when feeling overwhelmed at an unanticipated bridge toll-booth? Has he been telling fibs about Gerard Butler? Either way the beans are happy to oblige and give Lee and you the next best thing audio wise. With thanks to our editor Laura Grimshaw.Join our PATREON for ad-free episodes and bonus/video episodes: www.patreon.com/threebeansaladTickets for our UK TOUR available here: https://littlewander.co.uk/tours/three-bean-salad-podcast/Merch now available here: www.threebeansaladshop.comGet in touch: threebeansaladpod@gmail.com @beansaladpod
In WW2 a shortage of materials led to parachute silk often being recycled into knickers and vice versa. In honour of this the beans continue to send their underpants to His Majesty's Armed Forces today, even in peacetime. But who the blazes is using this precious commodity for recreational purposes and why? Luckily Tom of Bristol has suggested extreme sports as this week's topic so expect answers within.

People are known to have travelled from Bristol to Australia and vice versa on various occasions and sometimes more than once. Given these strong links it shouldn't come as a shock that Loz of Bristol reckons this week's topic for the beans ought to be Australia. Sam of Aurora slung noodles into the bean machine, and the beans attacked it with relish, going deep on the topic in such a way that you'll never look at a noodle, or even tagliatelle, in the same way again. You thought you knew what noodles were, well think on friend. And then think some more, and some more. And you still won't get close to the paradigm-shifting lukewarm power of the beans.

Hailey of Guildford offers up hiking as a topic for the beans this week which is nothing to be ashamed of. Just as the cardinal rule of the hiker is to leave no trace of themselves on the landscape, the lukewarm banter of the beans will pass through your mindscape with the firm promise to leave no memorable impression of any kind. Queen Vic, Lil' Drina, Granny Europe, The Windsor Widow, The Saxe-Coburg Slicker, Big Bo Peep. Whatever you call her, Queen Victoria still holds the record for the monarch with the most pubs and Spice Girls named after them. Match Of The Day. Big Break. Bullseye. All of the major British sports have been comprehensively covered by television for decades - except archery. Looks like it's time for the beans to pick up where television couldn't be arsed. Dr G has the beans get all lukewarm under the collar about seagulls this week. Voted the animal least likely to be of any use in warfare four years running and Time Magazine's “Worst Pet Experiment” (2003), the seagull is largely unloved by its human neighbours. Indeed a major survey by Ipsos MORI discovered that 99.23% of seagull based anecdotes cast the seagulls as the villain of the piece (and the remaining 0.77% were believed to be fabricated). Can the beans find an upside to the seagull? Or will its upside simply be covered in the shit from another seagull at higher altitude? With thanks to our editor Laura Grimshaw.Join our PATREON for ad-free episodes and bonus/video episodes: www.patreon.com/threebeansaladTickets for our UK TOUR available here: https://littlewander.co.uk/tours/three-bean-salad-podcast/Merch now available here: www.threebeansaladshop.comGet in touch: threebeansaladpod@gmail.com @beansaladpod
The presumably unreconstructed Nick of Chicago feeds “Old Wives' Tales” into the Bean Machine which spew-jects it just at the moment the beans are after a topic so that's what it is. Is there no such thing as an “Old Husbands' Tale” because husbands have no tales? Or because they typically die younger and therefore before reaching tale-telling maturity? The beans don't know and make no effort to go into it whatsoever.
