In this Halloween "spooky season" episode of Parallax Views w/ J.G. Michael, we delve into the unsettling world of true crime cinema with Chuck Parello, a filmmaker renowned for his work on notorious serial killer films. Parello began as the publicist for John McNaughton's groundbreaking and controversial Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, which faced a grueling battle with the MPAA that refused to grant it an R-rating despite extensive cuts. J.G. and Chuck discuss the haunting power of Henry, the terrifyingly quiet portrayal of the titular character by Michael Rooker, and how the film isn't a straightforward biopic of infamous killers Henry Lee Lucas, who came to be known as "The Confessions Killer" for fabricating many of his claims in exchange for special privileges, or Otis Toole but rather a unique examination of monstrous characters. Chuck then details his own sequel, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Part II, where Henry is drawn into the world of arsonists, shedding light on the creative origins of that choice. The conversation continues with Chuck's film Ed Gein, which diverges from fictionalized films inspired by the Butcher of Plainfield—such as Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Silence of the Lambs—and instead stays grounded in the actual life and psyche of Ed Gein. Featuring Steve Railsback, known for his unnerving performance as Charles Manson in the 1970s TV miniseries Helter Skelter, Railsback's portrayal of Gein is both unsettling and oddly tragic, showcasing a different side of the infamous killer. Chuck and J.G. also discuss The Hillside Strangler, a disturbing portrayal of Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono's deadly partnership, in which C. Thomas Howell and Nicholas Turturro take on chilling roles as the murderous cousins whose combined force drove them to escalate their crimes in late 1970s Los Angeles. Further, Chuck shares insights on his upcoming project on the Sunset Strip Killers/The Sunset Slayers (Doug Clark and Carol Bundy) and how he was originally was slated to direct the 2002 Ted Bundy biopic before Oingo Boingo's Matthew Bright ended up with the job. They tackle ethical questions surrounding the portrayal of real-life killers, the potential for exploitation, and the cultural obsession with true crime, shedding light on the complex responsibilities of filmmakers in this genre. This episode is a must-listen for fans of horror, crime thrillers, and serial killer cinema, as it examines the artistry and ethics of bringing these haunting real-life tales to the screen.

Buono returned to his office and told Cindy Hudspeth that it was time to close up his shop now but that he could give her some job openings if she would come into the house. She was grateful for his help. Once she sat down in the brown vinyl easy chair, her hours were numbered. Bianchi kept her occupied with small talk while Buono fetched the gag, tape, and cord. When she said that she lived in an apartment at 800 East Garfield Avenue, Bianchi said that that was quite a coincidence. He had lived right across the street last year. Bianchi won the coin toss this time. But before raping her, he agreed to Buono's suggestion that they tie her arms and legs to the legs of the bed. The spread-eagled sacrifice appealed to both of them. They used her for nearly two hours. At Buono's urging, Bianchi did the actual strangling. After she was dead and they were dressed, they agreed that her car was a problem. They would have to get rid of it as well as Cindy's corpse.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodTwitter: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpodSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-serial-killer-podcast. Small bruises showed around her breasts. And then, examining her more closely, Grogan noticed something that made him think at first that he was looking at the body of a drug addict: puncture marks on the inner arms. But there were only two puncture marks, none of the usual scars and needle tracks of the addict. The rectal bleeding and the absence on the body of any obvious signs of a dissipated, druggy existence suggested to Grogan that she might have been tortured before, during, or after the killing, maybe all three. He stepped back and looked about. He noticed no footprints or disturbances of any kind on the ground around her, and the body showed no signs of having been dragged.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodTwitter: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpodSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-serial-killer-podcast. He tried pulling back on her throat with his forearm first, then used a rag Buono handed him. Even though handcuffed, she managed to kick Buono in the head, so he held down her legs, draped over the back of the front seat, with his free hand until Bianchi had finished the job. When she was limp, Bianchi surreptitiously removed a large turquoise ring from her left hand and slipped it into his pocket. He thought it would make a nice present for his girlfriend. Then Buono drove to a spot on Forest Lawn Drive, below the Oakwood Apartments he had once lived in. They dumped Yolanda Washington's body beside the road, near a rockpile and the entrance to the graveyard, across the way from a Warner Brothers set depicting a peaceful New England village.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodTwitter: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpodSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-serial-killer-podcast. One afternoon Buono and his pals cruised by as school was letting out and noticed a boy standing alone with his books, waiting for a ride. The boy was wearing a maroon satin jacket with the name “Aristocrats” spelled out across its back. Buono ordered the car to stop and told his buddies that he wanted that jacket. He got out of the car while his three buddies waited. Then he walked up to the solitary boy. The boy was much smaller than Buono and the idea of exerting power over a weaker person thrilled Buono. When told to take off his jacket so that Buono could try it on, the boy hesitated, but when Buono, long thumbs in pockets, feet apart, pelvis forward, stepped closer, the boy slipped off the jacket and handed it over. Buono's friends lounged against the car, watching with glee in their eyes. Buono told the boy the jacket looked good and that he intended to keep it...Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodTwitter: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpodSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-serial-killer-podcast. Naked, she tried to beg, pleading with both cousins for her to be let go. Buono was put off by her unshaven legs and derided her as quote/unquote “some kind of a health nut.” He decided to pass up the sex this time, not even bothering to flip a coin, growing sullen and resentful at this affront to his intentions. Watching Bianchi trying to work up some enthusiasm for rape in the spare bedroom, Buono handed him a root-beer bottle. This Bianchi violently inserted into the young woman's vagina, causing significant pain. Bianchi applied the bottle with such eagerness and animation that he made her bleed, much to Buono's irritation. Not out of pity for the woman, but because blood would stain his sheets and carpets. To make sure she did not bleed on the carpet when she was strangled, Buono spread a piece of her coat on the floor.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodTwitter: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpodSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-serial-killer-podcast. Quietly and quickly they picked up the girl, Buono carrying her under the arms, Bianchi under the knees. Buono stepped first over the curb, and as Bianchi followed, his foot caught under the ice plant. He stumbled, almost fell, got his foot loose, and they dropped the body parallel to the curb, heaving her slightly, as one would throwing someone into a swimming pool. Neither the press nor television paid much attention to Buono and Bianchi's gruesome act, and on radio there was not a word of it. Murder was so common in Los Angeles: there was one committed every three or four hours in the county, not counting the prostitutes routinely overdosed by their pimps. It took something special to titillate the media, an eviscerated actress or a child stuffed down a sewer. But the girl remained unidentified for two days, and so, at the request of Sergeant Salerno, the Times ran this bulletin on the fourth page of the Metro section, and I quote...Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodTwitter: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpodSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-serial-killer-podcast. The two men was confident that they enjoyed complete privacy, there were no risk of prying eyes and since the house was located where it was; no outsiders could hear anyone scream. Buono got out and walked over to the laundry-room door at the side of the house, unlocking it. Sparky the dog was waiting on the steps but knew not to enter the house. When the girl asked what kind of place they had brought her to, they replied that the house was in fact a satellite police station. Quite unique. The men guided the girl into the house. She did not resist, she was still under the impression that the men were police officers and that all she had in store was a night in jail and perhaps a fine, worst case scenario a few months behind bars. As Buono secured the deadbolt, Bianchi guided the girl into the living room and sat her down in the brown vinyl easy chair.Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodTwitter: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpodSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-serial-killer-podcast. As with so many serial killer cases certain things are mysterious. It is clear that Bianchi and Buono are serial killer superstars, almost in the same league as Bundy and Dahmer. But their crimes were not particularly nefarious by serial killer standards. Nor did they rack up the greatest body count. But still, there is a certain je ne sais quoi about the case which makes it stand out. Perhaps it is the era and location of the crimes. It is so quintessential American and iconic of the Golden Age of Serial Murder. The bright California sun shining down on beautiful, dead young girls laying naked spread eagle for all the world to see as tired Dirty Harry looking detectives looks on in frustration and despair. Their killers were two cousins, Angelo Buono and Kenneth Bianchi. The partners in crime went on a killing spree, murdering 10 young women in just four months. Many were dumped on hillsides across LA – locations that would lead the killers to earn their infamous moniker. The Hillside Strangler, or later called the Hillside Stranglers, were American serial killers who terrorized Los Angeles, California, between October 1977 and February 1978, with the nickname originating from the fact that many of the victims' bodies were discovered in the hills surrounding LA.   The perpetrators were cousins, Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono Jr., who were eventually convicted of kidnapping, torturing, and murdering 10 women and girls ranging in age from 12 to 28.  Join us to honor the victims of these horrific attacks.  SOURCE MATERIALS:https://allthatsinteresting.com/The Hillside Stranglers Were Some of California's Most Iconic Killers - And One of Their Defense Arguments Was Absolutely Wild (ranker.com)https://criminalminds.fandom.com/wiki/Angelo_Buono_and_Kenneth_Bianchi#%EF%BB%BFAngelo_Buonohttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillside_Stranglerdadamo.comHosted and edited by Amanda ScottCo-Hosted, produced, researched, written and original graphic design by Pamela ScottOriginal music by Waves EntertainmentDisclaimer by Chuck HaungsENMESHED is an OH NO! After Kenneth Bianchi was arrested in early 1979 on suspicion he was responsible for the so-called Hillside Stranglings near Los Angeles, he made an outrageous claim: He did kill 10 women in LA and another two in Washington state, he said, but not as Bianchi. He was a split personality and had killed them as his alter-ego, Steve. Not only that, he said, but he'd had help from his older cousin, Angelo Buono. Bianchi's confusing confession led to one of the longest and most sensational criminal trials in California history. "Crimes of the Centuries" is a podcast from the Obsessed Network exploring forgotten crimes from times past that made a mark and helped change history. Hillside: The Investigation and Trial of the Hillside Strangler

Over five months in the fall of 1977 and the winter of 1978, Angelo Buono and Kenneth Bianchi committed a series of crimes known as the Hillside Strangler murders. In the new podcast HILLSIDE, author Joseph Rodota revisits the investigation into these slayings, followed by the longest murder trial in U.S. history. Rodota interviewed more than 40 people connected to the case – detectives, friends and families of the victims, defense attorneys and prosecutors, journalists, and the presiding judge – and unearthed new documents about the case from archives and private hands.HILLSIDE answers a number of lingering questions about this case:Why were these crimes so difficult to solve? Why did the Los Angeles District Attorney attempt to drop all murder charges against one of the killers? And why, decades later, did the case continue to haunt someone very close to one of the victims? HILLSIDE is a riveting story of crime, politics and personal redemption.

Katherine Mader spent two decades as a judge in Los Angeles Criminal Court, before retiring early in 2020. Before that she was the LAPD's first Inspector General, prosecuted two murder-for-hire trials and served as a defense attorney who convinced a jury to spare the life of the Hillside Strangler. In August of this year, Judge Mader published Inside the Robe: A Judge's Candid Tale of Criminal Justice in America, which best selling author Michael Connelly called: “a perfect book: engrossing and telling at the same time.” The Judge has granted Crime Story permission to excerpt the entirety of her book over the coming months. You can find previous installments of Inside the Robe here. Ron Crisp invites the reader to follow him through his investigation of the Leslie Barry murder; the trial of Art Anzures for the murder; the evidence that led him to his 3 suspects; how his investigation of the Barry murder led him to the defense of Angelo Buono in the Hillside Strangler case; and what happened in his personal life as a result of his attempts to expose the systematic cover-up in California V. Angelo Buono. The single most important clue in the case came from the statement of a 14 year old boy on the night of the Barry murder. Crisp wasn't at the crime scene that night, but would read the statement in police reports a week and a half later. When he read it, he was astonished that the police seemed to be showing no interest in this remarkable 16 word statement from a friend of the victim. The cops ignoring evidence that could help crack a case that had baffled them for 18 months, caused him to wonder if they were so stupid they couldn't connect these two simple dots or if something more sinister was going on. A dozen books or more have been written about the Hillside Strangler case, and taking a cue from the books, screenwriters have used the case in movies and TV cop shows to lend an air of credibility to their fictitious story lines. However, these movies and cop shows have kept the myth alive that Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono were the Hillside Stranglers. Author Ron Crisp reduced the statement by the 14 year old boy to 4 words and made it the title of this book. A CROSSING OF PATHS: The True Untold Story of the Hillside Strangler Case-Ron Crisp

“The Hillside Strangler,” Kenneth Bianchi, was a serial killer that terrorized Los Angeles between October 1977 and February 1978. But what cops didn’t know was that he had a killing accomplice – his own cousin! During this time, Kenneth and his cousin Anthony went on a spree of kidnappings, rapes, and murders in the area and claimed the lives of 10 innocent people. Because the bodies of the victims were usually found on hillsides, the infamous “Hillside Strangler” name was born. When Kenneth was caught in 1979, he ratted out Anthony, and both cousins were sentenced to life in prison.

SCARY MYSTERIES - TWISTED TWO's: “The Cresent Hotel & The Hillside Strangler” Tales of hauntings, murder and scary mysteries, Every week Twisted Two's dives into a pair of uniquely terrifying true stories that are worthy of a more in depth look. This week we focus on a very creepy hotel as well as the tale of two cousins with a taste for murder. Get ready for Scary Mysteries, Twisted Two’s - #1 The Crescent Hotel Best known as the 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa, this iconic structure has been standing proud on the West Mountain, overlooking the Victorian village of Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Designed by Isaac L. Taylor, the 78-room hotel was once a getaway for the rich and famous. Eureka Springs had become a boomtown thanks to the natural "healing waters" found in the area. So People from far and wide flocked into the town and the resort was a great place to accommodate them. But, over time, the guests realized the healing waters of the spring didn't work and so the numbers slowly began to dwindle until they eventually stopped altogether. In 1937, Norman Baker, a millionaire and radio celebrity came in and bought the hotel. He transformed the aged hotel into a "hospital" where he sold various "miracle cures" to his guests and patients. He promised to cure various ailments including cancer and was later arrested but subsequently released for mail fraud. It's estimated Baker managed to pilfer close to $4,000,000 from his sick patients while hastening their death by not giving them proper treatment. #2 The Hillside Strangler: Kenneth Bianchi & Angelo Buono Family members are united by blood but in the case of Kenneth and Angelo, they were united by a strong passion for rape and murder. Known as The Hillside Strangler because they would dump their victims bodies on the hillsides of California, the police knew there were two possible suspects but withdrew the information from the media – hoping it could be used later on in their investigation. One part of the duo was, Kenneth Bianchi. Since he was little, he had always been a troubled child who was described by his adopted mother as a "compulsive liar" and "lazy." After finishing high school he got married to his sweetheart at 17 but left her after just 18 months. By 1977, he ended up moving to Los Angeles, to live with his cousin, Angelo Buono. To give you a little history on Angleo, he was the son of Italian immigrants who at a young age exhibited a perverse preoccupation with sex and by the time he was a teen, he told his classmates he had raped several girls. He was a petty theif theft who later married and impregnated his first wife only to leave her after just one week. He married his second wife, had five children but she left him because he was physically and sexually abusive. It's also believed that during this time he raped his 2-year old daughter. For the third time, he married and had two other children. But this wife also left him citing physical abuse and for raping their child So there were a pair of some of the most haunted and sinister true stories around. The world can be a crazy place and Twisted Two’s is sure to show you why.

Hillside Strangler Stories from Vonda Pelto, Ph.D., She Dealt with Ken Bianchi at Los Angeles Men's Central Jail: Vonda Pelto, Ph.D. tells some stories about notorious Hillside Strangler Kenneth Bianchi from her time at Los Angeles' Men's Central Jail from 1980 to 1984. Vonda, author of Without Remorse: The Story of the Woman Who Kept Los Angeles' Serial Killers Alive, had close contact with this handsome and manipulative sociopathic murderer and really noticed how truly slick he was. Along with his cousin Angelo Buono, Jr. he tortured, raped and murdered 12 women. They did some unspeakable things and then he denied he had ever killed anyone, that is all his cousin's doing and he was innocent. Vonda didn't buy that for a minute. She took away from her experience a paranoia that still exists and she passes that advice on to anyone willing to listen. Serial Killers are great at blending in with the crowd and are generally in control because they want to keep killing for years. They are not drug addicts or alcoholics, they can't be in that it would cause them to be careless and thus get caught. Vonda also dealt with Freeway Killer William Bonin, Sunset Strip Slayer Douglas Clark, a real sick individual, the Trash Bag Murderer and a host of rapists and other high profile inmates. Serial Killers Not Crazy But Sociopathic, Vonda Pelto Gives Gruesome Details About Ones She Knew: On the James Lowe Jiggy Jaguar Radio Show it is Vonda Pelto, author of Without Remorse, a book about her dealings with serial killers, the subject is the fact that serial killers are not crazy, because if they were they would get caught sooner and they don't want to get caught, they want to keep killing for as long as possible. On the other hand they like attention; William Bonin would cut out stories about his killings and read them as way to relive the killing. Vonda Pelto, who spent over three years dealing with a number of serial killers at Los Angeles Men's Central Jail, revealed how Bonin also like to talk to her about the killings as a way to relive them as well. They are clever sociopaths and they often have to up the ante in order to keeping getting that thrill of the initial kill, which leads to torture. Hillside Strangler Kenneth Bianchi and his cousin Angelo Buono, Jr. went from killing women torturing by such methods as injecting Windex into their veins, putting a bag over their heads and pump gas in to make them pass, take it off the revive them and then again. Vonda went through a number of other scenarios are indeed gruesome.
