"My mother told me never to do this." When are we going to listen to our moms, people? The 1986 cult classic, The Hitcher, not only put the fear of hitchhikers in us, but also the fear of cops, German Shepherds, and even french fries. Rutger Hauer and C. Thomas Howell share the front seat of this dark thrillride with more than one gross-out moment. But now, decades of defeated horror villains later, what's left to be afraid of? Is there any suspense to be had when you can just drive away? And are the cops in this movie more vicious than the hitchhiker? The Old Roommates thumb through it all with their middle-aged lens on high alert. Join them for a ... side-splitting conversation. Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. In this Halloween "spooky season" episode of Parallax Views w/ J.G. Michael, we delve into the unsettling world of true crime cinema with Chuck Parello, a filmmaker renowned for his work on notorious serial killer films. Parello began as the publicist for John McNaughton's groundbreaking and controversial Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, which faced a grueling battle with the MPAA that refused to grant it an R-rating despite extensive cuts. J.G. and Chuck discuss the haunting power of Henry, the terrifyingly quiet portrayal of the titular character by Michael Rooker, and how the film isn't a straightforward biopic of infamous killers Henry Lee Lucas, who came to be known as "The Confessions Killer" for fabricating many of his claims in exchange for special privileges, or Otis Toole but rather a unique examination of monstrous characters. Chuck then details his own sequel, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Part II, where Henry is drawn into the world of arsonists, shedding light on the creative origins of that choice. The conversation continues with Chuck's film Ed Gein, which diverges from fictionalized films inspired by the Butcher of Plainfield—such as Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Silence of the Lambs—and instead stays grounded in the actual life and psyche of Ed Gein. Featuring Steve Railsback, known for his unnerving performance as Charles Manson in the 1970s TV miniseries Helter Skelter, Railsback's portrayal of Gein is both unsettling and oddly tragic, showcasing a different side of the infamous killer. Chuck and J.G. also discuss The Hillside Strangler, a disturbing portrayal of Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono's deadly partnership, in which C. Thomas Howell and Nicholas Turturro take on chilling roles as the murderous cousins whose combined force drove them to escalate their crimes in late 1970s Los Angeles. Further, Chuck shares insights on his upcoming project on the Sunset Strip Killers/The Sunset Slayers (Doug Clark and Carol Bundy) and how he was originally was slated to direct the 2002 Ted Bundy biopic before Oingo Boingo's Matthew Bright ended up with the job. They tackle ethical questions surrounding the portrayal of real-life killers, the potential for exploitation, and the cultural obsession with true crime, shedding light on the complex responsibilities of filmmakers in this genre. This episode is a must-listen for fans of horror, crime thrillers, and serial killer cinema, as it examines the artistry and ethics of bringing these haunting real-life tales to the screen.

When people make a list of iconic American presidents, the subject of this week's movie is on most of them. Dennis Quaid plays our 40th American president, Ronald Reagan, in the long-coming movie “Reagan.” This movie doesn't just tell the tale of the presidential years of Reagan. It spans his life from when he was a young boy up until his death. We see his humble beginnings in Iowa to him realizing he needs to stand up to bullies, including the Soviet Union. Even as far back as when he was simply known as an actor, he saw the Soviet Union attempting, and succeeding, to infiltrate many institutions in America, including Hollywood. He knew they were trying to turn America into another Soviet Union and he fought it. Later we see him meet the love of his life Nancy and it's made apparent that she stands behind him in everything he does. Of course, the movie features the Reagan most people over a certain age know. The California governor and our president. Does this movie do this American icon justice? Check out this episode to find out. “Reagan” also stars Penelope Ann Miller, Mena Suvari, C. Thomas Howell, Amanda Righetti, Jon Voight, Justin Chatwin, Kevin Dillon, Kevin Sorbo, Xander Berkeley, Lesley-Anne Down and Robert Davi. Support the showFeel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook

Welcome to another episode of The Video Store Podcast, where we dive into some classic films you might want to add to your watchlist. This week, I dug deep into my darkest fears and selected four classic movies from the 1980s that, in one way or another, either scared or scarred me for life.My Bodyguard (1980)All Clifford Peache had to do was surrender his lunch money to school bully Moody just like everybody else to avoid being constantly tormented. Instead he refused and comes with a plan to hire an even scarier student, Ricky Linderman, to be his bodyguard. This works briefly, until Moody gets a bodyguard of his own. For years after seeing this film I was terrified of moving on to middle school, mostly because I knew I could never afford to hire my own bodyguard. The Outsiders (1983)This classic coming of age film takes place during the 1960s in a small Oklahoma town where the Greasers are in a never-ending battle against the well-to-do kids in town, the Soc's. With performances by C. Thomas Howell, Ralph Macchio, Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Tom Cruise, Diane Lane, Leif Garrett, it's a wonder they had enough room for the film's title on the movie poster. The struggle between classes, along with the senseless violence between the two gangs, bothered me as a kid; maybe even more so as an adult.Bad Boys (1983)Not to be confused with the more popular film franchise of the same name, this 1983 film stars Sean Penn as Mick O'Brien, a teenager on the wrong path who accidentally kills a drug dealer's younger brother while fleeing a crime. Eventually O'Brien and the drug dealer, Paco, end up in a youth detention center with hardened criminals, but not before O'Brien's girlfriend J.C. (played by Ally Sheedy in her film debut) is savagely attacked by Paco out of revenge. “Bad Boys” is a savagely dark film that features a scene in which O'Brien defends his life by using a pillowcase full of soda cans as a weapon. This movie worked better than any of those “Scared Straight” videos they showed us in school and made me afraid of getting in trouble with the law for life.Red Dawn (1984)By the time the opening credits come to an end, Colorado is being invaded by enemy paratroopers that signals the beginning of World War III. A small group of high school students known as the Wolverines are able to escape to the mountains where they use their knowledge of the land combined with their hunting and camping skills to survive. When it becomes obvious they will not be able to hide forever, the group begins attacking the enemy forces using guerilla warfare tactics. As a kid, this film made me painfully aware just how few survival skills I actually possessed. When you're hiding from enemy soldiers in the Colorado Rockies during the winter, getting second place in a spelling bee seems wildly unhelpful. I loved growing up int he 1980s, but between cable television, movie channels like HBO and Showtime, and satellite television, an entire generation of latchkey kids ended up seeing adult-themed movies earlier than we should have. Never accuse a Gen Xer of being soft. We've seen things.Subscribe to the Video Store Podcast* The Video Store Podcast* Apple Podcast* RSS This is a public episode. Timothy's choice this week and he's gone for the 1986 thriller, The Hitcher. Directed by Robert Harmon and written by Eric Red, the film's production began with a script that was compelling enough to draw the interest of producer Edward S. Feldman. Rutger Hauer was cast as the enigmatic and terrifying hitchhiker, John Ryder, delivering a performance that would become iconic in the thriller and horror genres. C. Thomas Howell played the young protagonist, Jim Halsey, whose cross-country drive turns into a nightmarish battle for survival. The film's casting was critical, as the chemistry and tension between Hauer and Howell carried much of the film's suspenseful and psychological weight. Filming took place primarily in the desolate landscapes of the American Southwest, which provided a stark and haunting backdrop that enhanced the film's eerie and isolated atmosphere. The production faced numerous logistical challenges, including shooting high-speed car chases and violent confrontations in remote locations. Despite a modest budget, the crew's resourcefulness and the director's vision ensured that the film maintained high production values. The cinematography by John Seale captured the vast, empty highways and the sense of foreboding that permeated the film. Nothing says summer like a road trip movie, so we're setting off for California in this 1986 cult thriller. Things get interesting in West Texas when a young man picks up a mysterious hitchhiker who turns out to be an insane serial killer. Starring Rutger Hauer, C. Thomas Howell, and Jennifer Jason Leigh, this flick has more twists than a mountain road, but it lacked one thing when it premiered: an audience. Yes, it grossed even less than its $7.9 million dollar budget, but yet somehow it earned a sequel in 2003 and a remake in 2007. While both Siskel and Ebert gave this ride a “thumbs down,” director Christopher Nolan has called it one of his guilty pleasures. But is this movie more road war or road bore?
