Rodney Alcala, AKA The Dating Game Killer, was a depraved murderer who eluded authorities for years. He hid his true identity behind charm and persuasion. He worked as a summer camp counselor while on the lam for the savage assault of an eight-year-old girl. He convinced his parole officer to let him take a vacation to the other side of the country, where he proceeded to commit another of his many murders. While New Yorkers were watching their backs for the Son of Sam in the summer of '77, he killed again. And at the height of his killing spree, he managed to star in one of the creepiest moments in Hollywood history as a contestant on a popular television game show. What Bradshaw didn't know at the time was that, in doing so, she had narrowly avoided spending an evening in the company of one of America's most notorious serial killers. At the time of his appearance on The Dating Game in 1978, Alcala was a convicted sexual predator who had served time for sexual assault and had only avoided a charge of attempted murder on a technicality. When we left off last week, we had learned about The Dating Game contestant Rodney Alcala's assault of 8-year-old Tali and his first murder victim in NYC (at least, the first that we know of).We also reveled in the fact that a couple of his school-aged campers recognized his photo on the FBI Most Wanted list hanging in the Post Office near their New Hampshire camp (and yes, he changed his name to John Berger and worked at a camp for young girls after the assault on Tali and the alleged first NYC Killing). And just to recap, at this point in this confusing back and forth timeline, he is now a registered sex offender is about to land a job working for the LA Times, despite that registered sex offender status and finding himself in jail a couple times before appearing on The Dating Game show in 1978.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

One of the most prolific serial killers in America's so called 'golden era', Rodney Alcala is responsible for the deaths of at least eight people, although the true number is likely much higher. Yet few people have even heard of him. In fact his ability to narrowly avoid any real consequence for his multiple sexual assaults and violent murders, often on young girls, was so prolific that he even had the chance to appear on one of America's biggest TV quiz shows... which he won.Hannah and Suruthi revisit their coverage of the Dating Game Killer – one of the most uncomfortable cases we've ever covered.Exclusive bonus content:Wondery - Ad-free & ShortHandPatreon - Ad-free & Bonus EpisodesFollow us on social media:YouTubeTikTokInstagramXVisit our website:WebsiteSources available on redhandedpodcast.comSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In the 1970s, serial killer Rodney Alcala killed at least 7 people in California, New York, and likely many other states. When he was arrested, hundreds of photographs of men, women, and children were found that he had taken as a “professional photographer”, and many were extremely explicit. While he was eventually convicted of 7 murders and other crimes, it is believed the hundreds of unidentified subjects of his photographs could be victims of Alcala's that are currently cold cases. Here are the photos that have been shared with the police asking for the public's help in identifying the people in them. If you have information about the identities of the people in the photographs, you can contact Sgt. Sam Shepherd with the Huntington Beach Police Department at (714) 536-5947.
