In this Halloween "spooky season" episode of Parallax Views w/ J.G. Michael, we delve into the unsettling world of true crime cinema with Chuck Parello, a filmmaker renowned for his work on notorious serial killer films. Parello began as the publicist for John McNaughton's groundbreaking and controversial Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, which faced a grueling battle with the MPAA that refused to grant it an R-rating despite extensive cuts. J.G. and Chuck discuss the haunting power of Henry, the terrifyingly quiet portrayal of the titular character by Michael Rooker, and how the film isn't a straightforward biopic of infamous killers Henry Lee Lucas, who came to be known as "The Confessions Killer" for fabricating many of his claims in exchange for special privileges, or Otis Toole but rather a unique examination of monstrous characters. Chuck then details his own sequel, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Part II, where Henry is drawn into the world of arsonists, shedding light on the creative origins of that choice. The conversation continues with Chuck's film Ed Gein, which diverges from fictionalized films inspired by the Butcher of Plainfield—such as Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Silence of the Lambs—and instead stays grounded in the actual life and psyche of Ed Gein. Featuring Steve Railsback, known for his unnerving performance as Charles Manson in the 1970s TV miniseries Helter Skelter, Railsback's portrayal of Gein is both unsettling and oddly tragic, showcasing a different side of the infamous killer. Chuck and J.G. also discuss The Hillside Strangler, a disturbing portrayal of Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono's deadly partnership, in which C. Thomas Howell and Nicholas Turturro take on chilling roles as the murderous cousins whose combined force drove them to escalate their crimes in late 1970s Los Angeles. Further, Chuck shares insights on his upcoming project on the Sunset Strip Killers/The Sunset Slayers (Doug Clark and Carol Bundy) and how he was originally was slated to direct the 2002 Ted Bundy biopic before Oingo Boingo's Matthew Bright ended up with the job. They tackle ethical questions surrounding the portrayal of real-life killers, the potential for exploitation, and the cultural obsession with true crime, shedding light on the complex responsibilities of filmmakers in this genre. This episode is a must-listen for fans of horror, crime thrillers, and serial killer cinema, as it examines the artistry and ethics of bringing these haunting real-life tales to the screen.

On August 9, 1976, the bodies of two unidentified victims, later known as the Sumter County Does, were discovered along a secluded road in Sumter County, South Carolina. Both were shot multiple times with a .357 revolver at close range, and it was believed that they were forced out of a vehicle before being killed. Despite early theories suggesting they may have been hitchhikers or involved in a robbery, the case remained unsolved for decades. A key suspect, Lany George Henry, was found in possession of the murder weapon months later but denied involvement in the killings, and inconsistencies left the case cold.In 2020, DNA testing identified the victims as James Paul Freund and Pamela Mae Buckley, two American hitchhikers who had been traveling together. Ossuary 6 - Air Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/Contact us at: weeknightmysteries@gmail.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/weeknightmysteriesTikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@weeknightmysteries

Mike Cox's name is synonymous with Texas crime reporting.  Cox spent decades covering grisly crimes, working as a police beat reporter and later as the Chief of Media Relations for the Texas Department of Public Safety and authoring books about the Texas Rangers.  His latest book, Getting Away with Murder: Learning from Dateline and Other True Crime Shows, blends his sharp wit with his vast experience in law enforcement, offering readers a tongue-in-cheek take on crime and the often bizarre ways criminals get caught.  As an enterprising police beat reporter for the Austin American Statesman, Mike broke the story about serial killer Henry Lee Lucas' courtroom confession to 100 murders. Mike extensively interviewed Lucas in jail and wrote the definitive book about the case, The Confessions of Henry Lee Lucas. During our interview, Cox reflects on his lifelong immersion in storytelling, his family's deep connection to journalism, and how true crime shows like Dateline rekindled his passion for the subject. After the initial investigators working the murder of 18-year-old Cheryl Ann Callaway moved on, and the case had long gone cold, the voluminous file fell on the lap of Arlington, Texas Police Sgt. Dennis Rhoten. Rhoten hit the ground running, but eventually, like Sgt. Mike Adair and Detective Mike Leyman before him, began grasping at straws. In 1981, he looked at recently arrested serial killer Ted Bundy. Then, in 1983, Sgt. Rhoten, like the rest of Texas law enforcement, caught Henry Lee Lucas fever. None of those things panned out. Could Cheryl's killer have been right under their noses the entire time? Part 3 of 3.Special thanks to Steve Harris and former Arlington detectives Mike Leyman and Sgt. In a groundbreaking development, authorities in Texarkana, Arkansas, have finally cracked a chilling cold case that has remained unsolved for over four decades. DNA evidence has led them to identify Weldon Alexander, the father of the victims, as the prime suspect in the 1981 murder of his own children, Karen and Gordon Alexander.    At a press conference held on October 19, Texarkana Police Chief Michael Kramm announced the major breakthrough. He revealed that Weldon Alexander is believed to have fatally stabbed his 14-year-old daughter Karen and 13-year-old son Gordon in a horrifying incident that shook the community. Tragically, the suspect, Weldon Alexander, passed away in 2014, leaving unanswered questions surrounding the brutal crime.  The tragic events unfolded on April 8, 1981, when local authorities discovered the siblings in their Texarkana home. Gordon was found lifeless in the kitchen, while Karen, though grievously injured, was still clinging to life in the living room. Shockingly, the murder weapon was identified as a common butter knife retrieved from the crime scene.  Karen was rushed to a local hospital, where she fought for her life in a coma for three agonizing days before succumbing to her injuries, as documented in a 1981 United Press International news report. Gordon, at the time of the brutal attack, was confined to a wheelchair, making the crime even more heart-wrenching.  Initial investigations unveiled a horrifying truth; Karen had suffered sexual assault in the 48 to 72 hours leading up to her death and had likely endured this horrific abuse for around six months prior. Authorities disclosed these disturbing details during the recent press conference.  One of the perplexing aspects of the case was the absence of signs of forced entry into the Alexander family's home. At the time of the murders, Karen and Gordon's mother, Vera Alexander, was hospitalized for mental health issues, while their father, Weldon, was working an overnight shift at Copper Tire and Rubber.  Weldon's account of the events added to the mystery. He claimed to have arrived home from work shortly after 7 a.m. that fateful morning, finding both the screen door and the wooden front door slightly ajar. Inside, he discovered his son deceased in the kitchen and believed his daughter might still be alive in the living room area. Shockingly, he reportedly removed a kitchen knife from Karen's body and placed it on a nearby bookshelf before the arrival of law enforcement.    Over the years, detectives tirelessly pursued leads and interviewed numerous individuals associated with the case. In 1983, Henry Lee Lucas, a notorious serial killer known as the "Confession Killer," falsely confessed to the murders. However, lack of concrete evidence prevented any charges against him, and the case eventually went cold.    In February 2022, the case received new life when retired Capt. Calvin Seward, who had been a patrol officer at the time of the murders, reopened the investigation. Over the next 18 months, he meticulously identified, interviewed, and re-interviewed individuals connected to the original case. Crucially, he submitted DNA profiles into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) from individuals associated with the initial inquiry.    In a pivotal turn of events, DNA extracted from the victims' fingernail tissue in 2022 yielded results indicating a familial relationship with Weldon Alexander. Furthermore, Weldon's semen was discovered on Karen's bedding. Investigators also uncovered evidence suggesting that Gordon had died hours earlier than initially believed, as his body was cold to the touch when officers arrived at the scene.    Capt. Seward, speaking to reporters, suggested a horrifying sequence of events, stating that he believes Weldon attempted to assault his daughter, prompting his son to intervene, resulting in a brutal attack on both siblings.    In a press release, Texarkana police stated, "It is our hope that the friends and remaining family of Gordon and Karen Alexander may find some peace in knowing that scientific and circumstantial evidence has been revealed sufficient to resolve this 42-year-old case." Miller County Prosecuting Attorney Connie Mitchell expressed confidence that Weldon Alexander is the sole suspect in the murders. She stated that if he were alive today, she would be seeking an arrest warrant for two counts of capital murder. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? From wiki: “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is a 1986 American psychological horror crime film directed and co-written by John McNaughton about the random crime spree of a serial killer who seemingly operates with impunity. It stars Michael Rooker in his debut as the nomadic killer Henry, Tom Towles as Otis, a prison buddy with whom Henry is living, and Tracy Arnold as Becky, Otis's sister. The characters of Henry and Otis are loosely based on convicted real-life serial killers Henry Lee Lucas and Ottis Toole.” But first! True Crime Tuesday presents Silent Silhouette ... Who killed Deborah Sue with Journalist/Researcher/Author George Jared! Deborah Sue Williamson was a newly married young woman living in Lubbock Texas on Aug. 24, 1975. One night while her husband was away at work, she was brutally stabbed 17 times in the carport of their home. Many suspects were investigated, but no one was charged. The case went cold until the mid-1980s when Henry Lee Lucas, a man notorious for admitting to murders he didn't commit confessed to her murder. It was profiled in the Netflix doc series The Confession Killer. There was only one problem. He didn't kill her. Her mother and stepfather proved Lucas didn't end Debbie's life and the case went cold once more. True Crime Author and investigative journalist George Jared teamed with his friend and former Army counterintelligence officer and university professor Jennifer Bucholtz to study the case in-depth. The two became acquainted while trying to solve the unsolved murder of Rebekah Gould. In that case they were able to lure the man, now charged with the 22-year-old woman's slaying, onto a Facebook page. Their interactions with him prior to his arrest garnered national attention. Their goal was to do the same in this case. Silent Silhouette is an in-depth look into the work that was done, complete with full interviews of every key player in this real life tragedy.
