Our guest today is the journalist Anirudhya Mitra. In May 1991, when a former Prime Minister of India was assassinated at Sriperumbudur, Mitra was a young reporter who had joined India Today magazine barely a month earlier. Over the next ninety days, he covered the hunt for Rajiv Gandhi's killers from closer than almost any other journalist in the country — his investigative stories became known as the "inside story" of the assassination. That reporting also made him a target: he was followed, threatened, and publicly branded a CBI agent by both the DMK and the LTTE chief Prabhakaran himself. For thirty years he carried facts he could not put in print. In 2022, he finally wrote them down — in the book that is the subject of today's conversation, Ninety Days: The True Story of the Hunt for Rajiv Gandhi's Assassins.
It is 1931. Adolph Hitler is less than two years away from becoming dictator of Germany. But he is currently walking a political tightrope with his future still uncertain. In September of that year Hitler's 22-year-old niece Geli Raubal is found dead of a gunshot wound in the future Fuhrer's Munich apartment. Their odd relationship raised many questions. Was her death a suicide as Hitler claims, or was there a more sinister side to the story? Our guest Peter Clenott has written a thrilling novel entitled, “The Murder Investigation of Adolph Hitler,” about a tumultuous time in Germany and a case that could have changed history as we know it!

When 21-year-old Katie Simpson died in August 2020 after an event in her home, why did the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) accept the version of events offered by Jonathan Creswell, the man she shared a house with? He said she had taken her own life. Why did they not look into his past as a convicted domestic abuser, or her history of presenting at hospitals with injuries and why did they so readily believe him?Nearly a year after her death he was charged with her murder and on the second day of the trial in Belfast, he killed himself. In doing so he not only denied his victim justice, he stopped the details of her death and the investigation into it being made public in a court.A 200-page report on how her murder was handled has now been published and it reveals a shocking litany of failures by police that are not simply down to poor investigation techniques but something far more ingrained and sinister: “institutional misogyny”.It also reveals that many more victims have come forward with allegations of abuse against Creswell who was active in equestrian circles in Northern Ireland.Seanín Graham, Northern correspondent of The Irish Times, explains how the report on PSNI failings has been received.Presented by Bernice Harrison. Produced by John Casey and Andrew McNair. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
A report has lambasted ‘institutional misogyny' in PSNI over failings in the Katie Simpson murder investigation. Police officers on the case were responsible for a catalogue of basic failures including not preserving evidence, missing forensic opportunities, dismissing key witness statements, failing to secure phones or even photographing her injuries. 21-year-old Katie from Tynan, Co Armagh, died almost a week after an incident in Lettershandoney. Police originally thought she had taken her own life. But a year later, Jonathan Creswell was arrested. Creswell's trial ended in April 2024 after he took his own life following the first day of proceedings. The Belfast Telegraph's Crime Correspondent, Allison Morris, joins Ciarán Dunbar. Send a textA cold case sharpens when a simple sketch turns into a lever. We open the Von Stein murder file with fresh eyes, bringing the SBI back into the room and laying out a clear plan: protect the few secrets that still hold power, then set a ruse to test what the suspects don't know they're revealing. The hinge point is a map—handwriting that echoes a guarded clue—and the patience to let a small moment move a heavy investigation. We walk through Chris's well-practiced timeline: a Sunday of beer and cards, a late return to bed, missing keys, and a campus police ride that threads him from dorm to hospital to Smallwood. Along the way, we note the friction points that matter: a sudden decision to park in a far, well-lit lot weeks after a theft, and a set of stories that tidy up just as new details slip out. When we ask him to draw the neighborhood, he does, and twice writes a name in a way that could tie him tighter than he intends. It's not a confession; it's a comparison. Strategy over spectacle. From there, the circle widens. Bruce paints a picture of friendship, Dungeons & Dragons marathons, and the gravitational pull of Moog: bright, charismatic, fueled by drugs and chaos. He frames Chris as easily led yet affectionate toward his parents, complicating any neat motive. Hank meets us in a rain-soaked doorway with guarded half-answers and multiple versions of the crime story—burglary, assault, murder—raising questions about what changed and why. Money hums under the surface: talk of stock percentages, a new car, big weekends, and the image-management that young men perform when they want to be seen as flush. The thread pulling tight is absence. Multiple voices can't place Moog on the crucial night, and that negative space becomes a lead of its own. We close by shifting from cold calls to a warmer trail: a probation officer who knows his habits and haunts, someone who can map the person as precisely as Chris mapped the streets. That's the heartbeat of this chapter—maps everywhere. Neighborhoods, friend groups, timelines, and the thin lines of ink that can tip a case. Listen, then tell us: which small detail changed your mind? If this story drew you in, follow, share, and leave a review so more listeners can join the investigation. Support the show

Tepe Murders: What Police Strategy Reveals About the Case Ten days into the investigation of the murders of Spencer and Monique Tepe, Columbus, Ohio police are intensifying their efforts — including door-to-door canvassing in the neighborhood where the couple was found dead. In this episode of Police Off The Cuff, we break down what a neighborhood canvass really means in a double-homicide investigation, why detectives deploy it at this stage, and what information police are hoping to uncover. We also analyze the investigative strategy being used by the Columbus Police Department, including victimology, timeline reconstruction, digital evidence review, and follow-up interviews. Columbus Police officials, including the Chief of Police, have emphasized that this remains an active and ongoing investigation, with limited public details released to protect the integrity of the case. We discuss why investigators often withhold information, how canvassing can expose overlooked witnesses or surveillance, and what typically happens next as forensic and digital evidence continues to be analyzed. Some True Crime stories announce themselves loudly. This one doesn't. It begins quietly — with a late shift, a famous name, and a decision that, on the surface, feels ordinary. But beneath it sits a Murder Investigation that would stretch across years, courtrooms, and headlines, becoming one of the most unsettling Celebrity Crime cases in modern memory. In this episode of Stories Fables Ghostly Tales, we examine the death of Lana Clarkson and the long road that followed — a case forever tied to Phil Spector, the legendary Beatles Producer, architect of The Wall of Sound, and one of the most influential figures in Music History. But this is not a story about musical genius. It's a story about power, pressure, and what happens when Hollywood's glow fades into something much darker. On the night she died, Lana Clarkson was working at the House of Blues — a working actress doing what so many in Hollywood do to stay afloat. By morning, she was dead inside Pyrenees Castle, Phil Spector's fortress-like mansion, and the world was left trying to understand what had happened behind those gates. As the case unfolds, this episode guides you through: The Hollywood Murders narrative that quickly took shape in the media How Forensic Science became central to challenging the initial defence Why this case turned into years of tense Courtroom Drama, including a mistrial and a second jury How fame, legacy, and public perception collided with evidence and testimony This isn't sensational storytelling. There's no spectacle here — only careful reconstruction, verified facts, and the quiet weight of accountability. Because when a case involves a music icon, a guarded estate, and a woman whose life was reduced to a headline, the most important thing is getting the story right. If you think you know the Phil Spector case — listen closely. There are details here that rarely receive the attention they deserve. Thank you all for your amazing support!!! Nick Jeffery and John Granger do a Compare and Contrast test of the latest Cormoran Strike novel, The Hallmarked Man, and the previous seven books in Rowling-Galbraith's longest series of novels. Adapting a list of ‘Greatest Hits' moments from the first ‘Reading, Writing, Rowling' podcast John did with Katie McDaniel and a panel of Potter Pundits in Roanoke, Virginia, Nick and John share their favorite moments first from the series and then from Strike 8 before contrasting the quality of these highlights. The point of the exercise? Besides being a fun review of Strike-Ellacott adventures, a Greatest Hits collection of their highs and lows, Agency cases and sub-contractors included, the absence of any Hallmarked Man moments that merit a ‘Best in Series' badge suggests that Strike 8 will be remembered best for how it set up Strikes 9 and 10.Whatever your thoughts about that thesis, please share the scenes on your Greatest Hits list, both for the series and Hallmarked Man, per the numbered categories below. Nick and John have a few more to run through that they couldn't get to on their first ‘go' at this; feel free to share categories they should discuss in addition to the ones listed here:* Top Strike-Ellacott Moments* Ellacott taking care of wrecked Strike* Strike taking care of wrecked Ellacott* The Two having a frank conversation about the Agency, their vocation* The Two having a frank conversation about life and their relationship* Top Mystery Reveal* Top Agency Subcontractor moment* Top Agency case not the focus of the novel* Top Strike Confront-the-Killer moment,* Top “Magical” Moment (heart-rending/opening)* Top Moment-that-We-didn't-know-was-a-Moment-until-later* Top Saving People MomentJohn is working on his charting of Hallmarked Man for the paid subscriber list as well as reviewing and revising his 2017 online course, ‘Wizard Reading Formula.' More on those projects and the Kanreki Series in his next conversation with Nick; stay tuned!Links to Ideas, Posts, and Theories Mentioned* Roanoke ‘Reading, Writing, Rowling' Harry Potter Review[‘reading, Writing, Rowling's] first episode was recorded at CoLab in Roanoke, Virginia, at the May 2017 Roanoke Harry Potter Fest and celebrates 20 years of Harry Potter. Listen to a stellar crew of Hogwarts professors discuss [with hosts John Granger and Katy McDaniel] their favorite moments in the Harry Potter series, inspired by Bloomsbury Publishing's recent reader poll. Guests Louise Freeman, Elizabeth Baird Hardy, Emily Strand, and Lana Whited identify the best moments featuring the trio friendship, surprises and narrative misdirection, wizard magic, Snape, texts-within-the-text, and those inspirational messages that make the Harry Potter series profound and emotionally resonant to readers worldwide.* Rowling's Favorite Painting and What It Suggests about Her Artistry and Meaning: Caravaggio's ‘Supper at Emmaus'Professor Groves suggests strongly that what Rowling took away from her “mesmerised” “slow mining” of Caravaggio's Supper at Emmaus was the central Mystery of the Incarnation of Christ, the “guiler beguiled” idea of Aulen's Christus Victor. I find that argument compelling and want to build on it. There are embedded symbols in Supper at Emmaus that I think the fascinated Rowling would have noticed as she looked at the painting in the National Gallery, at the print on her wall in Exeter and London, and at the image on her first website, symbols beyond the “realism” of the Christ as imagined by Caravaggio and the revelation at the breaking of bread of His divinity.* Robin is Sterile Prediction: Chlamydia to Ectopic Pregnancy (December 2023)The thesis of this Hogwarts Professor essay — what I hope will be the subject of our second ‘Rowling Studies' podcast here — is that Robin Venetia Ellacott will not have children with Murphy, Strike, or any other partner, because she cannot, at least not without some extraordinary efforts via in vitro conception and surrogacy. I will attempt to explain how this infertility is possible, to detail the ‘Lake' suggestions from Rowling's life and personal experience that shows she is more than familiar with this condition among women, and to share the ‘Shed' literary markers in Running Grave and Rowling's other novels that this is indeed what she has in mind for Strike's partner Robin.Means Before Motive: How is it Possible that Robin is Sterile? In a word, “Chlamydia.”* The Hallmarked Man's Mythological Template ‘Cupid and Psyche's importance for grasping the depths of Strike 8, from the “necessity” of the Silver Vault and the three men in Robin's life, to spaghetti carbonara and ‘Maid of the Silver Sea' (links list to previous posts, 2021-present on this subject)* Charlotte Was Murdered, Mate; It Wasn't a Suicide* The Strange Death of Charlotte Campbell: Could the Psycho-Ex be the Focus of a Murder Investigation in Strike 8? (Nick Jeffery, November 2023)* Strike8: The Charlotte Campbell Murder Mystery: Nick Jeffery's Idea Checks a Lot of Boxes (John Granger, November 2023)* The Mysterious Death of Charlotte Campbell: Was It Suicide or Was It Murder? The ‘Rowling Studies' Pilot Episode (December 2023)* J. S. Maleksen's Re-read of Running Grave in Search of Ryan MurphyAfter reading HM twice, I re-read ‘Running Grave' with this theory in mind. It occurred to me that RFM might have read Charlotte's suicide note because it was in the police file. He might have even read through statements made by Charlotte's family members about Charlotte's relationship with Strike. At the very least, he would have read that Strike was in love with Robin and may have even bought into the ‘Strike was abusive to Charlotte' narrative and the ‘Strike has been in a romantic relationship with Robin since he broke up with Charlotte' narrative. This would explain why RFM is significantly more chippy towards Strike after Robin returns from Chapman Farm than he was at the beginning of ‘Running Grave.' Come to think of it, if Nick's theory is right and the suicide was a murder, it's quite possible that RFM may have been the lead investigator because, as we now know, he kinda sucks at his job. RFM would have had no reason to disclose any of this information to Robin because “she gets ratty every time he says anything against Strike.” Details identifying the investigating officer may not have been published. Alternatively, Iverson could have been the investigating officer and she could have shared this information with RFM and RFM can't tell Robin how he got the information because he had a fling with Iverson while Robin was at Chapman Farm. This might lead to an explanation as to why/how RFM fell off the wagon (guilt about having cheated on Robin and/or fear that Robin hasn't been honest about her relationship with Strike and/or his perception that Robin is being cowed by an abusive Strike)It makes sense to me that the period of time when Robin was at Chapman Farm is the most plausible and likely spot for JKR to have buried details about RFM, and his true character and motivations. The story as told from Robin and Strike's respective points of view intentionally distracted us from what RFM was up to during Robin's time at Chapman Farm. Indeed, he was often an afterthought of Robin's if she even thought about him at all.Incidentally, this makes the ‘RFM as gorilla man theory' more plausible because walking around with all of this information in his head could have motivated RFM to take extreme measures to get Robin to abandon Strike and the agency.I love your Substack and Podcast. In this episode of Gangland Wire, retired Kansas City Intelligence detective Gary Jenkins sits down with veteran Chicago journalist Chuck Goudie, whose decades of reporting have made him one of Chicago's most respected voices on organized crime. A fan of the show asked for more Chicago stories—and this conversation delivers. We dive into the legacy of the Spilotro family, sparked by the recent passing of John Spilotro, brother of the infamous Las Vegas mob figure Tony Spilotro. Chuck shares his reflections on how the Outfit has evolved, from its heyday of dominance in gambling, loansharking, and union racketeering to its much smaller—yet still persistent—presence today. Together, we revisit the Outfit's historic ties to the Teamsters, the Strawman trials, and the legendary names like Anthony Accardo who shaped Chicago's mob identity. Chuck solves a mystery and provides the name of the man who killed Sam Giancana. Chuck also offers personal insights into how mob families navigated the push and pull of blood ties, with some members rising into notoriety while others tried to lead straight lives under the shadow of organized crime. Our conversation shifts to Chuck's recent investigative work on the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa, exploring the long-standing theories and mob connections that keep the story alive decades later. This episode blends history, reflection, and storytelling—offering both an inside look at Chicago's Outfit and a reminder of why these stories still captivate us today. 1:02 The Legacy of John Drummond 4:11 Current Status of the Outfit 7:28 The Last of the Spilotro Family 10:02 Family Dynamics of the Spilotros 13:18 Frank Calabrese's Las Vegas Fame 13:25 Giancana's Murder Investigation and who did it 18:18 Surveillance in the Giancana Case 22:03 The Straw Man Trials 25:40 Ken Eto's Gangland Story 27:52 Investigating Jimmy Hoffa's Disappearance 31:03 Closing Thoughts with Chuck Goudie Subscribe to Gangland Wire wherever you get your podcasts, and join us each week as we uncover the stories buried beneath the headlines—and the bodies. This is Gary Jenkins, retired Kansas City Police Intelligence Unit detective here in Kansas City. And, you know, guys, I have, I was talking with a fan not too long ago from Chicago, I think on the, maybe the Facebook group, and he said, you need to do more Chicago stories. And I had to admit, I hadn't done that many Chicago stories. I got caught up in New York a lot, It seemed like, and anyhow, we're back to Chicago and another guy's mentioned to another guy and we were talking and, and somebody said, I don't remember who, maybe that original fan said you need to get Chuck Goudie on there. He's been doing a lot of reporting on the outfit over the years. And I didn't really know who Chuck was. So I started searching. He did a recent story about the death of the last spilotro brother, John spilotro. So I thought, man, this is, this is it. This is what I got to do. So welcome, Chuck Goudie from Chicago. Well, it's quite an introduction. Some might call it a eulogy, but thankfully that's not what he does. [1:02] Really? Now, I think I told you earlier, you know, last time I interviewed a Chicago newsman, it was John Bulldog Drummond. Bulldog Drummond, I tell you what, he was the dean of Chicago newsmen, television newsmen, when it came to reporting on the mob. There's no doubt about it.
What began as a typical game day celebration for University of Idaho students would end in unimaginable horror on Saturday, November 12, 2022. Xana Kernodle, a marketing junior, spent the day with friends, including her boyfriend Ethan Chapin and housemates Dylan, Bethany, Kaylee and Maddie at their shared home on 1122 King Road. After parties and celebrations, the group returned home in the early hours of Sunday morning. At around 4am, Dylan heard disturbing sounds. When she cracked her door open, Dylan saw a masked man with bushy eyebrows holding what looked like a vacuum cleaner. The next day, when upstairs roommates wouldn't answer their phones, friends discovered the bodies of Xana, Ethan, Kaylee and Maddie - all brutally stabbed to death. Vicky Ward, co-author of The Idaho Four: An American Tragedy, joins Claire to explore this devastating case. You can find her book here.
